During the 1970’s & 80’s I worked mainly on ships under the British Flag when the IRA was at its worst wreaking havoc in Britain. Thus atrocities like the ‘Manchester’ violence above stir up some old, buried feelings in me of the lonely, lost, impotent ache of being assumed to be a ‘terrorist, anti British rebel like all the so and so other Paddys’. And one wants to be loyal to one’s country. I was pretty much always the only Irishman on board. While I met a new crew every six or nine months or so, by keeping a shut mouth and displaying as decent a nature as I could manage, attitudes usually turned around fully over time. All to be repeated on the next trip!!! I expect that many a decent Muslim feels all of that strain and pain as they too get ‘tarred with the one brush’ because of the few misguided rotten apples. Humanitarian issues in some ‘Muslim’ countries may make it more difficult for us to temper sweeping assumptions. For me, one other cord connected to those feelings is that of being loyal to Faith. Not just Christian Faith or Anglican Faith, but to ‘Faith’ in the supernatural. And again, the ‘bad apples’ make the going rough for us apologists for such faith. I guess Jesus, Paul, Peter ……….and many a martyr had to put up with that and a whole lot more in loyalty to their Faith. CHURCH GROUNDS. You will see major changes to the ‘hard quar- ter’ of the grounds, - all with a view to another 150 years plus of enduring quality. Dr. Brian Bond is the engineering consultant and over- seer of the project along with a faithful and common sense subcommittee of the Select Vestry who took the project by the scruff of the neck after many years of humming and hawing. When the site was used as a dump one night during the project, we discovered that the CCTV system which has been faithful for many years had given up the ghost. A new system is now installed. We look forward to a celebratory event on the grounds when the tape is finally cut on the project. A church sees such a range of emotions over time. May we each be faithful and sincere as “We rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep” – St. Paul. Romans 12:15 We pray for those who mourn in Manchester and for the loss of innocence of the young there. For some the Gremlins will get loose at night. God protect and comfort them through the silent hours, and day by day. Fred

NEWSLETTER

Dear Parishioners & other friends,

As I write, the death toll of a suicide terrorist attack at a young people’s concert in Manchester has climbed to twenty-two.

You will see major changes to the ‘hard quar-ter’ of the grounds, - all with a view to another 150 years plus of enduring quality. Dr. Brian Bond is the engineering consultant and over-seer of the project along with a faithful and common sense subcommittee of the Select Vestry who took the project by the scruff of the neck after many years of humming and hawing.

On the move in Rathmichael School for Active Week

RATHMICHAEL PARISH NATIONAL SCHOOL

Our past month has been one of activity. We had an Active week whereby all pupils wore orange T shirts and we got active every day. Here in Rathmichael we believe in keeping the body fit. We tend not to limit activity to just the one week and include many other sports throughout the year. Some of these are cricket, GAA, football, tag rugby, golf and swim-ming.

We had a golf day for 3rd to 6th classes. Pu-pils were introduced to skills in golf. They en-joyed this. It is through experiencing many sports at this level that children find an avenue for themselves to get involved in. You will nev-

er get all children excited about each event but many go on to join clubs once they have discovered a new activity or a sport which works for them. Not every child is fit and energetic but most of them can walk. One of the challenges last month was to get walking. Pupils had to see how many times they could walk around the pitch in 5 minutes. Classes regularly go out to see how their running skills are doing.

We got involved in a Dance Day in aid of the Down Syn-drome Centre this year. Each class had to dance in front of the school. It was fun and we raised money for a good cause in so doing. Obesity is a problem and is certainly one worth tackling.

Encouraging healthy eating and exercising regularly are what we encourage at Rathmichael. We are lucky to have such supportive parents who help in all our ventures and encourage their chil-dren, as we do. Caroline Senior, Principal

DANCING WITH THE STARS A ‘Coffee Afternoon’ was held at the Rectory on St. Patrick’s Day in order to sponsor Hayley Appelbe to compete in a “Dancing with the Stars” event in aid of St. Joseph’s, Shankill: Dedicated to Dementia Care. Parishioners and other friends were more than generous as always and the dance event was held in the Stillorgan Talbot Hotel in May. Hayley and her dance partner, Simon Murphy, whose mum is a resident in St. Josephs, danced a most energetic Charleston which included hand-stands, cartwheels and many other complicated manoeuvres - not for the faint hearted! Up against stiff opposition from Quick Step, Waltz, slow Foxtrot and Tango, Hayley and Simon wowed the crowd and the judges and WON!! Congratulations to them - well done. This was a fun evening and Dustin the Turkey added some sage and onion comment for each contestant! Thank you for your support of Hayley and the crew for a very compassion and loving filled exciting activity. Circa €45,000 was raised for Dementia Care by show.

June 2017

Dear Parishioners, Fete 2017 is on its way - Please put the date in your diary – 2nd September 2017. As we look ahead to Fete 2017 we need everybody’s help and support to make our Parish & School Fete an enjoyable and successful event. There are many ways in which you can help – Donations of goods - in this newsletter you will find the list of stall managers. It’s never too early to start putting things aside for the Fete. Perhaps you may be able to grow some plants to donate to our plant stall or maybe you can begin planning for some jam making during the summer. Sponsors and Donors – The cost of running our Fete is substantial as we have to hire in tents / tables and equipment, purchase food & supplies etc. We need help with these costs so please contact any Fete Committee member if you are in a position to provide sponsorship or make a financial donation to support Rathmichael Fete. Helpers - As I write, there are still a few stalls that do not yet have a “Manager” so if you are interested in helping out please talk to any member of the Committee. We also need “manpower and womanpower” for every stall. Please let us know if you are available to help one of our Stall Managers. We especially need support during the week of the Fete with sorting and stacking etc. Please consider giving us one or two nights during that week. We need people to set everything up the day before the Fete and of course clearing everything up after-wards.

There are many other ways to help: donations of raffle prizes,

help with publicity car park supervision making jam or baking

erecting signs, etc. etc..

Please contact one of the Fete Committee by phone or email.

Your help and support will truly be appreciated.

Fete Publicity Owing to restrictions imposed by Dunlaoghaire/Rathdown County Council we are only allowed display a very limited quantity of signs in public places. We are asking anyone who has a garden or suitable wall/ premises, especially on a busy road, to consider letting us erect a sign for the week prior to the Fete. Please contact John Bolton or Mark Kenny. Whether you are new to the Parish or a long established Parishioner please don’t be shy – the Fete is a great way of getting to know people. We need everybody's help and support to make Fete 2017 successful.

RATHMICHAEL PARISH & SCHOOL FETE

SATURDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER 2017

12 noon - 4.00 p,m,

Fete Committee 2017 Contact details for the Fete Committee members are included so please get in touch if you would like to help us or if you have any questions or queries. You may notice that the list of Fete Committee members looks rather longer than usual. That is because several long standing members of the Committee (including myself) are stepping away from the Fete Committee after Fete 2017. We have recruited several new committee members who will ensure that Rathmichael Fete continues to thrive into the future. For 2017 we have expanded the Committee to make the transition smooth & seamless and it is my pleasure to welcome them on Rathmichael Fete Committee and I look forward to working with them as we prepare for Fete 2017. So Fete 2017 will be my last as Chairman of the Fete Committee after 18 years and consequently it will be with mixed emotions that I look ahead to Fete 2017. In advance I would like to thank you all for your continued support for this most important annual event in our Parish & the local community.

So, please, please help us – WE need YOU.
