June 2017 Monthly Newsletter of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church
Our new pastors (Andy & Christi) are eager to
arrive in July to begin ministry with you. They
have every reason to be excited. You are an
amazing faith community! I had known you to
be that by reputation but I am discovering that
first hand as your interim pastor.
Working with our extraordinary staff, I have
been so impressed by their passion for ministry
as well as their competency. Couple that with
your high capacity Lay Leadership and you have
the combination that leads to believing our very
best years are ahead.
Speaking of things ahead, we have VBS just
ahead beginning June 11 (nighttime VBS) and
June 12 (daytime VBS). Preparations are well
underway to make this a high impact week for all
our children and those who will visit us for the
first time through VBS.
I want to say thank you in advance to all of our
adults who have agreed to serve in this vital
ministry to children and their families. It is a
worthy investment of your time, presence and
effort. You are in a unique position to bless a
child, encourage them and help them to
experience Jesus through your care, teaching and
hospitality. Please do not undervalue your
potential impact.
I can still remember adults from the VBS
experiences I had as a kid that affirmed me,
sometimes corrected me and always wanted the
best for me.
I thank God for them and I thank God for you as
you offer yourselves in this God honoring
ministry.
Blessings,
Pastor Ken

First Friday Meals at Potter House
Special thanks to all those who helped out with
serving on First Friday so far this year. This year
we’ve had a homeschool class directed by Cristina
Voorheis, a dance team headed up by Jennifer
Williams, the PTFC 01 boys soccer team,
American Heritage Girls lead by Rhonda Lamb and
recently we had a big group of individuals come
together to help serve. We have some volunteers
that often provide food (Sheila Gallow, Leslie Hall,
Cristina Voorheis and Jennifer Williams step up
any time we need help). Food Lion in Stokesdale
gave us a fabulous deal on chicken a couple months
ago. In the coming months, we have Susan Nestor
leading in June and we typically provide just the
food for July since it’s near a holiday weekend.
ORWS will be serving in August. They have been
helping every year for at least 12 years. We do
have a couple fall openings if you have a group that
wants to help out on a first Friday. Contact Alison
Huber at 336-382-0695
To the Children’s Ministry Team, Outreach
Team, Church Staff, American Heritage
Girls and all of you who served and helped
to organize the 2017 Change the World Day
event, I celebrate each of you! Thank you
for sharing your donations, time and talents
with everyone here at Oak Ridge UMC and
in our community! Thank you for sharing
your love for Christ with us through your
actions. Small actions from lots of people
with God’s grace can equal big changes for
those who serve and are served. Continue
to let your bright lights shine! I pray that
God will continue to bind us together in this
ever changing world. May we pray for His
guidance in discovering the needs of those
around us and also learn to listen for the
Holy Spirit’s gentle push in caring for them.
Peace and Blessings,
Tracey

Computers and Your Eyes
Can looking at computer screens damage my eyes?
No. While complaints of eye fatigue and discomfort are common among computer users, these symptoms are not caused
by the computer screen itself. Computer screens give off little or no harmful radiation (such as x-rays or UV rays). All
levels of radiation from computer screens are below levels that can cause eye damage such as cataracts.
Can looking at a computer screen cause eyestrain?
Fatigue, dry eyes, bad lighting, or how you sit in front of the computer can cause eyestrain. Symptoms of eyestrain
include sore or irritated eyes and difficulty focusing. You may also have symptoms of eyestrain if you need glasses or a
change in your glasses.
What can I do to prevent eyestrain?
You can help prevent eyestrain by making changes to your computer workspace and by visiting your eye doctor. Here
are a few suggestions on how to make your workspace more comfortable:
Place your screen 20 to 26 inches away from your eyes and a little bit below eye level.
Use a document holder placed next to your computer screen. It should be close enough so you don’t have to
swing your head back and forth or constantly change your eye focus.
Change your lighting to lower glare and harsh reflections. Glare filters over your computer screen can also
help.
Get a chair you can adjust.
Choose screens that can tilt and swivel. A keyboard that you can adjust is also helpful.
