President’s Message: Recently losing Gabe Tierce, a longtime member, reminds us all how delicate McKinley Mountainmen’s historical representation and traditions are. Political correctness is trying to rewrite our history. It’s everyone’s responsibility to not let this happen. Fond memories of Gabe and her contributions to our club will fade as more of
us pass to our maker. Gabe was much younger than many of our active members right now. She did more than
her part, but each one of us have contributed! Muzzle Blasts magazine this month started a column, “Charter Club Chatter”, dedicated to the fact NMLRA Charter Clubs are disbanding right and left! We are a NMLRA Carter Club,
therefore we are all in this together, nationally. MMMLRC has been in existence since 1972! Are we, as a club, to
go this same route of disbanding? I would recommend we all follow this column and use any thought (yours or
theirs) to promoting the McKinley Mountainmen Organization into the future. And, with our club’s current age limitation, participation (though physically tiring and painful, or even with limited physical ability) is critical to
keeping our traditions alive until the next generation picks up the torch and carries our heritage on! Rest in peace
Gabe, we’ll miss you! President, Calvin “Bush Hog” Pope

Minutes of McKinley Mountainmen Monthly Meeting for April 20th, 2017 • The meeting was called to order by President Calvin Pope at 7:06 pm. There were eleven members in attendance:
Calvin Pope, Keith & Mary Mathis, Jeff Binegar, Jim Anderson, Suellyn Novak, Joe Coe, Bob Lochman, Keith Bayha,
Beverly Grafel, Paul Brown. Our 3rd Thursday reservation at the Eagle River VFW hadn’t been carried over and the basement was rented out so our meeting was held outdoors on picnic tables under the deck. Arrangements were made
and our future monthly scheduled basement reservation should be back in effect!
Secretary’s Report for May 2018 2017 • The Treasurer’s Report for April was not presented at the meeting, therefore was listed in the “Other Information” section of the May Newsletter, as it could not be listed as being read into the “MMMLRC April Meeting Minutes”. The
“Other Information” section of the Newsletter is for occurrences, or information, happening between the past meeting
and the newsletter’s distribution, that the Newsletter Editor believed should be shared with members.
• Members who sell things on our Gun Show Sales Table are on their honor to pay the 5% of their total sales to
MMMLRC. It is near impossible for rotating volunteers manning our presentation at these shows to keep track, or
inventory, of items each individual sells, or moneys received. Commissions to MMMLRC have been left to the “honor system”. It is the seller’s responsibility to make this happen, not the volunteers working our presentation, the President,
or Secretary/Treasurer of the club. The commission was reduced from 10% to 5% to benefit our members, often leaving
the sales table not paying for itself! Again, a cheap club service for our members! I know MMMLRC is not receiving all
of its sales commissions. It’s not fair to those paying the commission having some others not pay! Any suggestions for
this problem? Is the only solution, the elimination of the sales table at these shows?
• Mary Mathis updated MMMLRC’s IRS Tax Information and our Tax Exempt Status with the Alaska Bi-Annual Report
(which had a $25 Fee paid by her credit card over the internet).
• Suellyn Novack made a motion to accept the April’s Secretary Report/Minutes as posted in the both the “Secretary’s Report” and the “Other Information” sections of the May Newsletter. Jim Anderson seconded the motion, and it carried
unanimously.

Shoot Reports • NMLRA 1000 Point Pistol Shoot Report by Keith Bayha: Only five shooters showed up to participate in the seventh annual Alaska Regional 1000 Point Aggregate Pistol shoot, May 6 and 7, 2017. Cold and windy shooting conditions
contributed to the low scores and may have contributed to the low participation. But if we are to continue holding this
event we need greater participation. Any suggestions are welcome. The results are shown in the spread sheet attached.
No one elevated their classification.
• Calvin Pope reported nine participants in the May Pistol Shoot; Rob Bargewell, Steve Anderson, Bear Kelsey, Brad
Bowman, Zane Domaika, Mark Miller, Howard Delo, Calvin Pope, and Pat Reed. Ten shot’s each were shot at two Single
Bull Pistol Rapid-Fire 25 yd. targets. Steve Anderson was the top shooter with a score of 152 total on both targets.
Second was Calvin Pope with 126, then Mark Miller with 102.
• Pat Reed’s Email concerning the May Rifle Shoot: We have our first outdoor shoot of the season at the Mat Valley 100 yd. range, Saturday May 20, at 9 AM. Shoot Program: 25 Yards, 6 Shots, Offhand at the Postal Target; 50 Yards, 5 Shots Offhand at the 6 Bull (7 ring black) Target; 100 Yards; 10 Shots Offhand at the French Musket Target; 100 Yards, 8 Shots (score best 5), BENCH, at 100 Yard Target (8 ring black). Shoot these targets in any order. We will try and stick to 30 minute relays with some allowance made for bench (extra 10 minutes if necessary). There is a and on one end. Confine your loading to the loading bench along the back wall and leave the shooting benches open for shooting. There will be a short safety briefing before any shots are fired. Pat
Old Business • President Calvin Pope questioned Keith Bayha over the 1000 Point Pistol Shoot, concerning entries qualification
ratings. Calvin reminded Keith that shooters ratings (expert, sharpshooter, marksmen, etc.) were determined by
previous scores at NMLRA events. If a shooter has never qualified at a National NMLRA event, he must shoot at the
highest level until establishing a rating. Calvin did not feel Keith B. had followed this procedure at the 1000 Point Pistol
Shoot. Keith B. said he may have made a mistake and would review his shoot results and shooters ratings. • The President also brought up the Fall AGCA Gun Show which, at last month’s meeting, was said to be scheduled for Oct. at Raven hall, Palmer Fairgrounds. Calvin said he had heard the AGCA Fall Gun Show will be at the Sullivan Arena in
Anchorage, not Raven Hall in Palmer. Both Suellyn Novack and Paul Brown verified the Sullivan Arena location had been
finalized for October 14-15, 2017. Calvin further proclaimed our $50 advance payment for the 2017 spring show sales
table was going to be returned and he suggested we not attend the Fall Gun Show at the Sullivan Arena because of
calamities in the past with logistics to Anchorage and troublesome set up procedures at the Sullivan Arena. All
comments on attending the AGCA Fall Show in Anchorage were negative, however since Tim Pauloski had volunteered
to orchestrate a one man show, he should be notified and given the opportunity to set his demonstration up at that
show. Consensus was he would not want to, but the opportunity should be offered to him. Most likely, MMMLRC will
not attend the AGCA Fall Gun Show at the Sullivan Arena (Anchorage) this October.
• Keith Bayha commented on the fact Jim Anderson had purchased 600, 50 Caliber Balls for Youth Day at Birchwood.
Keith said he had given TC Wilson 17 pounds of lead to make round balls for Youth Day, and TC was in the process of
making them. Secretary Keith Mathis stated he had informed Rob Bargewell of this
however Rob elected to purchase commercial round balls because of the complications we have had with varied sizes of
balls made from TC’s multi-ball mold in the past. Rob and Jim Anderson are co-chairmen of the MMMLRC
demonstration at Birchwood Youth Day Presentation and details and procurement of supplies has been left to them.
The Secretary said he would notify TC Wilson of the decision. President Calvin questioned Jeff Binegar if he was bringing
his gongs for targets, and if other members were bringing milk jugs and water bottles. The question arose did we have
food coloring and Jim A. said he would get some if needed.
• President Calvin Pope also reminded the club of Memorial Rendezvous at Ft. Wick starting next week, Thursday
evening through Monday morning (May 25-29); State Rendezvous at the Bison Range, Delta Jct., June 24th through July
2nd; and the Territorial Shoot July 13-16 at Ft Wick. Rob Bargewell, assisting Keith Bayha with the Territorial, requested
volunteers to help, sign up shooters, distribute/collect/& score targets, post shooters scores and hand out medals. Two
of the past volunteers will not be available this year so new volunteers are desperately needed.
Page 3
• Mary Mathis, chairman of our primitive camp demonstration at the Deltana Fair, July 28-30, asked who would
participate. Bob Lochman and Jeff Binegar both said they would attend as well as Keith and Mary Mathis. It is assumed
Steve & Kathy Waggoner, and Don & Rocky Phillips from Fairbanks would attend also. More volunteers are needed to
make a traditional camp, show crafts, and demonstrate black powder shooting and hawk throwing. Those
contemplating attending contact Mary for details and arrangements for attending. Since it is a long drive grouping up
will help alleviate expenses and transportation.
New Business • Mary Mathis requested club finances to procure paper supplies and printing ink for printing club newsletters,
records, & documents. The club has done this for past Secretaries and Newsletter Editors so she would appreciate the
same consideration. Mary suggested $100-$150 would suffice for a year supplies. Jim Anderson motioned and Bob
Lochman seconded the club pay Mary $150 for her and Keith’s supplies (Keith is Sec/Treas/Newsletter Editor and Mary is his secretary/financier). Motion passed, then Paul Brown motioned $200 be set aside every year for office/paper
supplies from the club. Bob Lochman 2nd the motion and it too was approved. So Mary is to receive $150 for
accumulated expenses and be authorized $200 per year in the future for said requirement.
• Suellyn Novak said she had a VHS/TV recorder in her basement that belonged to the club. It has been there for years
and the club has not used it. What was she to do with it? Members present agreed Suellyn could dispose of the TV as
she saw fit, and jokingly said give the club the proceeds! Not!! More like disposal expense, not proceeds!!
• Keith Mathis, Secretary, announced Alex & Mona Conners sent a letter and have requested anyone with a small tent
(preferably a one pole) for sale, they would be interested. They will be attending both Memorial and Fall Rendezvous at
Ft Wick. Their phone number is 907-982-6604.
Good of the Order • Keith Bayha reported by email Friday, May 5th, that he was informed this morning by Kathy Waggoner, that Gabe
Tierce passed away this morning from incurable cancer. Gabe requested her ashes be placed in a “pretty urn” with some of them scattered on their property at Prater Lake. Kathy asked that time be reserved for her to say a few words
about Gabe at the Memorial Day Rendezvous. Her husband, George, requested no one send cards or flowers as he
understood our blessings and condolences, but it just would cause more complications for him to deal with during trying
times. Keith has updated George and Gabe Tierce’s bio for the Alaska Muzzle Loaders Bio-Sketch Book and it is attached.
• With a huge smile, Suellyn informed the club she was getting married in September! She said she had known her
fiancé for the last 14 years, and he had been her fishing partner for the past 13. She said they
would be splitting the year between Pennyslvania and Alaska, eight months in one place, and four in the other!
Congratulation, Suellyn!!
Meeting Adjournment: • Jim Anderson made the motion to adjourn, and Paul Brown seconded. Motion passed and the meeting adjourned at
7:53 pm.
Split-the-Pot
• A red ticket (Life Member) was drawn for Split-the-Pot. Tim Wood was not present to win, so the $20 collected this
month will be carried forward to the June Meeting’s Split-the-Pot drawing.
Other Information • The Treasurer was befuddled on the conclusion of the Treasurer’s Report this month because the deposits did not total what he deposited in the club’s account. Seems he forgot to list in the report, a $30 club membership for Al
Avenger and two adult tomahawks sold at the Houston Gun Show for $35 each, or $70. That brings the total deposits
for May up $100, from $261.63 to $361.63.
• May’s Monthly Rifle Shoot Report, Saturday May 20th, by Pat Reed: It was a beautiful day to shoot with sunshine
and no wind for the most part. We loaded from the bench that Bob L. and I put up awhile back. We are going to widen
it a bit so that it will be more loader friendly for the next shoot. From here on, we will be loading off this bench since
this frees up a lot more space on the firing line. It worked out well and almost everybody adapted. We had nine regular shooters and two disgruntled (didn't like the loading arrangement so did not shoot). The shooters in order of finish
Page 4
were Mike Deland, Bob Lochman, Pat Reed, Steve Anderson, Beans Binegar, Mark Miller, Bear Kelsey, Bill Browne, and
Martin Killough. We shot 25, 50 and 100 yards. We had one bench target and everything else offhand. The bench
usually proves to be interesting, especially with light rifles. A light rifle, rested on the barrel or far out on the fore end
will usually shoot high due to the barrel flexing. Obviously, this deflection isn't much, but at 100 yds., it doesn't take
much. A suggestion that works for me is to rest the forearm in the palm of the hand similar to how one would hold the
gun offhand. One gun I have shoots center offhand and I have to use a 6 o'clock hold off the bench with the same sight
setting (resting the barrel on the rest). Hope this is of some use to some of you. At least it is something to try.
• State Rendezvous will be held June 24 through July 2nd at the Bison Range south of Delta Jct Alaska. Booshways are
Kathy Waggoner and Rockie Phillips. The flyer for State Rendezvous is an attachment to this newsletter. Kathy wants to
remind those attending to bring pillow cases if you intend to make pillowcase aprons; 3 yards of fabric for a skirt; and
pony beads (see flyer for details on craft projects). If anybody has extra tarps, canvas of course please bring it. (It would
be nice to have extra on hand to make coverings to protect the group from rain or even sunshine as there will be no
trees in the camp. And finally, there will be a dessert potluck so bring fixin’s for your contribution.
Page 5
• The Memorial Weekend Rendezvous is over. It can be called a success, though a bit chilly and rainy at night. The
days were basically clear or overcast, but the weather did not hamper activities until the last day. We had 12 full
primitive camps (Charlie Peters, Bob Lochman, Pat Reed, Jeff Binegar, Jim Anderson and Nancy Confer, David
Underwood, Keith and Mary Mathis, Steve and Kathy Waggoner, Don and Rockie Phillips, Tim Pauloski, and George
Thompson); one primitive day camp (Alex and Mona Conners); one modern camp (Chris Tomsen); and eight walk-in
visitors (J.D. Biggs-twice, Mary Jo Summersill-three times, Steve Anderson-twice, Howard Delo-once, Chris and Kimberly
Carney-once, Davin and Paula Koivunen-once, Rex Wakelam and female companion-once). The Phillips’s had two children there, Charlotte and Alexandria. And the Mathis’s had 8 of their grandkids; Sean, Devin, and Raeley Carney; Arron, Evan, and Clare Koivunen; Cariera Odenthal and Claytin Mathis. Grand total of 38 full and part-time
rendezvousers for the 2017 Memorial weekend Rendezvous. Rendezvous started at 8pm Thursday, May 25th, and
wrapped up Monday morning, May 29th in a light rain. The original intention was to Rondy the entire day Monday with
closing ceremony Monday evening, however the Monday morning rains discouraged most campers, causing an early
breakdown and departure. Working campers had to be back to work Tuesday morning so a Monday departure was a
necessity. The early morning packing and exodus seemed to be contagious, even though it was the only actual rain
during the daytime hours. Rendezvous activities entailed the kids twice-a-day hawk throws, two rifle shoots daily
(Friday, Saturday & Sunday), Council Fires Thursday and Saturday evening, and a camp progressive hotdog feast
sponsored by the Booshway/Segundo Sunday evening. A progressive hot dog feast entailed the Booshway/Segundo
supplying the food with sort of “buffet” with each item served in a different camp. Hot dogs were the main course, with
baked beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, potato chips, watermelon, cookies, and cakes to complete the meal. The two
main rendezvous activities were the black powder shoots and the kids hawk throwing. As many as 9 children threw
hawks and up to 13 shooters competed twice daily. Devin Carney was the overall hawk champion, Clare Koivunen 2nd,
and Raeley Carney 3rd. The shooting competition was very close with Bob Lochman edging out Steve Waggoner for
Memorial Rendezvous Mountainman by one point. “Wag won four of the six shoots, however Bob placed in all six. He
won one, then placed second three times and third once, accumulation of one more point than Wag. Pat Reed was third
squeaking out a young shooter, Haiwatha, by ½ point! Pat had a 1st & a 2nd finish while Arron Koivunen had two 2nd & a
3rd. One of Arron’s 2nd was a tie with Bob Lochman, thus splitting 2nd & 3rd losing that ½ point or he would have tied for
third overall! All six shoots were exceptionally entertaining, so congratulations must go out to the Booshway, Ed Wick.

Each day turned peaceful, only after midnight each night!

• There will be no Doddridge Letters article this month due to a very busy schedule. I hope some of you are disappointed! Doddridge is being reprinted to enlighten present modern minds of history as it actually occurred, firsthand from someone who lived it. You should take into consideration history is written by the victors. History is reorganized and filtered by each generation as they feel appropriate and set it to fit their beliefs. I have been reprinting these “Letters” monthly since October 2014. I would appreciate feedback on the popularity of the reprinting of the Doddridge Letters in the Newsletter to determine its continuance. The following is the original introduction supplied by our “Mayor”, Tim Pauloski. Keith Mathis, the “Editor” To the reader (in review): First published in 1824 the author, born in 1769 and taken by his father along with the entire family in 1772 to what was then the farthest reaches of the Virginia/Pennsylvania frontier. His associates feared the loss of this bit of our history so prodded the author to publish his memories and opinions of those early days in the then western wilderness Well educated the author would become a minister, a medical doctor and chronicler of the early beginnings of what would become the United States. These letteres are being reproduced by Tim Pauloski, camp named “The Mayor”. NOTES ON THE SETTLEMENT AND INDIAN WARS OF THE WESTERN PARTS OF VIRGINIA AND PENNSYLVANIA FROM 1763 TO 1783, INCLUSIVE, TOGETHER WITH A REVIEW OF THE STATE OF SOCIETY AND MANNERS OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF THE WESTERN COUNTRY, by Joseph Doddridge (Doddridge voices his opinion on our forefathers and the native people of the era). The bravery, victories and suffering of our forefathers ought to be correctly and indelibly recorded. those who have lived and died for posterity ought to be rewarded with imperishable fame in the grateful remembrance of their descendents. The monuments conferred on moral worth, by the pen of the historian, are more durable than those erected by the chisel of the sculptor. A measure of justice is certainly due to our barbarian enemies themselves. For whatever of system, prudent foresight and arrangement, they observed with their wars with us, they ought to have full credit. For the full amount of all the patriotic motives by which this unfortunate people were actuated in their bloody conflicts, they deserve our sincerest commiserations. The wars of these people are not to be regarded as wholly the offspring of a savage thirst for blood. They fought for their native country. They engaged in the terrible war of 1763 with the view to recover from the possession of the white people the whole, of the western settlements. Their continuance of the war, after the conclusion of our revolutionary contest, had for its object the preservation of much of their country as they then had in possession. On the part of the most intelligent of the Indian chiefs, they fought from a motive of revenge and with a valor inspired by desperation. They foresaw the loss of their country and the downfall of their people, and therefore resolved on the vengeance for the past, and the future wrongs to be inflicted on them. There is yet another reason for the work under consideration. The present generation are witness of both the savage and civilized state of mankind. Both extremes are under our inspection. To future generations the former will exist only in history. The Indian nations are now a subjugated people, and every feature of their former state of society must soon pass away. they will exist only through the medium of their admixtures with the white people. Such has been the fate of many nations. Where are now the Assyrians, Chaldeans and Romans? They no longer exist; and yet the English, French and Italians are in part, descendents of the ancient Romans. Such will be the fate of the aborigines of our country. They will parish, or lose their national character and existence by admixture with their conquerors. To posterity therefore their history will be highly acceptable. Indeed it may be said of all history, that like good wine it grows better with age. Note: the 1763 war Doddridge refers to was Pontiac's rebellion. Doddridge was sympathetic to the Indians and their loss of culture and hoped their history would not be lost. TimP.

• Keith Bayha has updated George and Gabe Tierce’s bio for the Alaska Muzzle Loaders Bio-Sketch Book
• Keith Bayha also supplied the results for the 2017 Alaska NMLRA 1000 Point Pistol Shoot held at Mat Valley
Sportsman’s Outdoor Range, May 6th & 7th. With such a poor turnout (5 shooters) next year’s 1000 Point Shoot is in
jeopardy! Conflicts with other events could have contributed to the low turnout. At the same time, there was an AGCA
Gun Show in Anchorage, the Cowboy Shooters scheduled monthly shoot was going on inside MVS building, Bulls Eye
Shooters were shooting on the on 100 yd range, and Howard Delo was teaching the Alaska Black Powder Hunter
Education Course which is only on specified dates and required to hunt black powder in the state of Alaska. All of these
events took away MMMLRC pistol shooters as well as others not associated with our club.
