Year 7s win football Treble and DebateIt Cup

Year 7 have spent the past few months collecting a number of tro-phies after winning the DebateIt Cup in public speaking and three football trophies, having played the season with a 100% win record.

The team followed up on this by winning the Islington & Camden Cup in April, defeating Haverstock 8-0 in the final.

Students Attend Debate at CambridgeEvery fortnight Ms Alpgüner , the Maths Co-ordinator for Key Stage 3, holds meetings with female sixth form students to discuss feminist issues and provide support and guid-ance for them. In March, the group travelled to Cambridge University to witness a debate on the motion This House believes feminism must be a rising tide that lifts all ships. As well as being a motion of relevance to the Feminist Society, the lead speaker in favour of the motion was Ms Okolosie, an English teacher at Central Foundation. As well as witnessing the debate, which also included Baroness Halel Afsar and Eve Livingston, the students were taken on a tour of the university and its student union, allowing them to talk to current students about the Oxbridge application process and life at university.

Artists Work Towards Art ExhibitionIn mid-February the Art Department won a competition to work with the Wellcome Collection around their current year-long exhibition Making Nature. To kickstart the project, the 17 pupils visited the exhibition to view over 100 objects from litera-ture, film, taxidermy and photography, examining for free on the final day of the half term. In early March, the group travelled to Rainham Marshes. The nature reserve, managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, gave them an opportuni-ty to photograph a variety of wildlife and also hear how the RSPB try to make nature in an attempt to preserve it. In June, two of the artists appeared on the BBC’s flag-ship nature programme Springwatch Unsprung to discuss the exhibition and project.

Charity WeekDuring the penultimate week of term, the four houses took part in Charity Week. Each day at lunchtime, a different activity took place in order to raise money for the four house charities: Save the Children, Mind, Water Aid and Al -Mustafa Welfare. Events across the first four days comprised of a cake sale; a music concert with acts from different houses singing and playing instruments to a 180 strong audience of their peers; staff competing against pupils in table football, with pupils eager to defeat their teachers and a student quiz. This quiz between pupils was matched in the evening by the second School Com-munity Quiz between parents and carers against school staff. On Friday the school cele-brated Red Nose Day as a fundraiser was held for Comic Relief. The total raised was £856.

Prefect sings at Wembley StadiumA Year 10 pupil kicked-off the FA Cup final match between Arsenal and Chel-sea at Wembley Stadium by performing with the choir that sung Abide With Me in front of 90,000 fans and an estimated worldwide audience of half a billion people. Daniel was selected at the request of the Football Association by Restore the Mu-sic, a charity in partnership with Central Foundation that supports the music de-partment. He is an Arsenal fan, a member of the senior choir and players the tuba. He was also profiled on BBC London News in the days leading up to the match.

Snow in the Lake District11 sixth form geographers spent a snowy half-week in the Lake District. The Year 12s visited Blencathra mountain in Cumbria to study glacial features, drawing and anno-tating field sketches and collecting data at various sites along the river channels in the valleys and hills. The data they collected was analysed for use in presentations, mak-ing them take what they had learnt in the classroom and put it into action. Although it was spring when the team arrived, the weather was still displaying winter condi-tions as the geographers were subject to snow showers and temperatures of -1 degrees.

Skiing in AustriaDuring the half term, over 40 pupils were taken to Austria to spend the week in the Alps ski-ing. The annual trip saw the Ski Club travel through the night by coach and ferry to Austria, arriving in the Silvretta section of the Alps mountain range by midday Saturday. During the week away, the pupils were split into beginner, intermediate and advanced groups so that their activities could match the skill level. While they spent the days skiing, in the evening the hotel offered other activities such as football to keep them occupied. After just under a week in Austria, the group departed on Friday to make it home in time for Saturday evening. The trip ended with the boys presenting Mr Wilson, Head of PE, with a gift to thank him for over 20 years of organising the ski trip as he announced that 2017 will be his last trip.

A Level Economists visit Bank of EnglandIn the summer term, a group of A level economics and business studies students visited the nearby Bank of England. The students were listened to a presentation by employees and also watched a film which explained the bank’s roles and responsibilities to the nation. The stu-dents took notes throughout the day, as much of what they learnt links direct or indirectly to the new A level economics and A level business syllabi. The presentation closed with a ques-tion & answer session which allowed students to have some of the finer and more complex aspects of global banking and national economics to be explained. After this they explored the museum and saw an archive of previous currencies as well as lifting a solid bar of gold.

150th Anniversary of the Central Foundation TrustIn December, the Trustees of the Central Foundation Schools of London host-ed a celebration at Mansion House commemorating their 150th year. The evening saw a coming together of both the Central Foundation Boys’ and Girls’ Schools. Past and present staff from both schools, along with governors, trustees and pupils were in at-tendance, as was the new Lord Mayor. They were treated to a variety of classical and rock music performances from the Boys’ School and an extract of Macbeth from the Girls’ School as the guests reflected on the impact the history of both schools.

Cricket season underwayNow that the football season has ended the cricket season is well underway. Although the U13 team did not win the McKinsey Cup Tournament, they recovered the follow-ing week. First they defeated Islington Arts and Media School (IAMS) by 8 wickets, reaching IAMS’s target of 88 in 9 overs. They secured back-to-back victories the fol-lowing day when they recorded another victory, this time against the City of London Academy: Islington (COLA:I). Although the bowlers only took 3 wickets compared to 5 the day before, they restricted COLA:I to only 52 runs, giving the batsmen an easy task of scoring 53 runs in 7 overs - half of their allocation. Since early May the team have been having regular practice sessions with Middlesex CCC’s coach Mark Barrell.
