MIKE’S MUSINGS BY: MIKE WILSON, DIRECTOR
SUMMERTIME AT SCOPE You can still sign up by calling 330-399-8846 to be part of our new dance/walking unit for community parades this summer. We have over 20 men and women who have already signed up and we will meet to discuss outfits and movements. Our meetings/practices will
take place at the Warren Center each Monday in June starting on June 12th at 2PM, so we can prepare for 4th of July parades. And remember to submit your choice for our new name for the unit. (see page 1)
Our second annual SCOPE Kentucky Derby Party was another great success thanks to the efforts of Ranea Sutliff our SCOPE membership coordinator. The ladies fancy hats all looked great and our Colonel Sanders lookalikes were impressive. Everyone enjoyed the food and mint juleps. Many thanks go to Jim and Chrissy of LongBoyz Tavern for their support.
Remember, the Office of Elderly Affairs nutritional $2 lunches are available at our Cortland, Lordstown, and Warren centers at 11:30 am each day. Remember to call 330-675-2486 two days in advance to reserve a lunch.
Mah-jongg, Bridge, and Mexican Train Dominoes have begun at many of our centers and are always looking for more players. Many of our Mah-jongg players even competed in a recent tournament in Canfield.
We have a lot happening at our six SCOPE senior centers this summer to report to you.
The Warren Center’s Riverside Railroad Club has rebuilt their large garden track display, with historical buildings in our center’s back yard. Their summer open houses to the public are June 23rd, 24th, July 14th, 15th, and September 22nd, 23rd. Hours are Fridays from 4 till 8pm and Saturdays from noon till 4pm for a small fee to adults, with kids under 12 free.
We have also been delighted with our member’s musical performances at 11am before lunch each Monday and Tuesday. Thanks to Dorothy Owens and Velma Bowman for being our musical leaders and to Jason our SCOPE music instructor for his singing. We also thank our center manager Sister Dorothy on organizing another successful health fair in May.

SCOPE GOLF LEAGUE
We play about 12 different courses in the area. The variety of play keeps the league fresh and new. Scheduled to golf every Tuesday from late April until the beginning of October. Start anytime!
Niles Center keeps growing in activities through the efforts of our volunteers and staff. The new book club is a partnership with the McKinley Memorial Library with reviewing different books each month. The new Zumba class with Karen Elder is attracting more participants. Our square dancing and line dancing still continue to go strong. The SCOPE choir also continues to perform at various senior facilities on Fridays. The Niles SCOPE is open for Harry Stevens Day on Sunday, July 2nd which occurs as part of the Fourth of July festival in downtown Niles.
The Howland Center has another successful Bocce season underway with well over 100 senior players with two sessions on Tuesdays. The computer classes with Ted are always packed and they even repair computers. The Howland Center hosts two red hatters clubs, the American Legion and Auxiliary as well as Ohio Star Quilters each month. Game nights on Thursdays are going well and also feature wonderful meals.
Lordstown Center is hard at work preparing for its Strawberry Delight (great eats!) on Saturday June 10th at the center. The members are also enjoying the SilverSneakers FLEX classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We have been using our mini bus to pick up residents of Newton Falls who are without a lunch program or community center. This is thanks to our volunteers,
Stacey, Joe and Brian. The center continues to grow with members and activities thanks to the relationship with Lordstown Schools Superintendent Terry Armstrong, his board and staff.
At the Cortland Center another successful mother’s day event was held in May along with our spring rummage sale. If you need computer training we are pleased to announce that Ted Horrell, our trainer at Howland Center will also conduct training classes at Cortland. Kathyrn Infante with the creative art class has begun to conduct classes at Cortland after her successes at the Warren Center.
The Champion Center moved into the Trumbull Career & Technical Center’s adult education wing (Door B) one year ago and saw an increase in members and activities. The center is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 am till 2pm. The drumming exercise session on Mondays as well as the SilverSneakers FLEX classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays are going strong. Check out the calendar to see what summer activities are available. Once school is back in session many other programs will be offered.
Remember our Warren, Niles, Lordstown, and Cortland Centers are available to rent for graduation parties, wedding receptions and birthday parties. Contact each center for a fee schedule.
For a more detailed list of activities for each center see the calendar in the middle fold of our “Telescope”. Have a great and safe summer.

SSSCOPE celebrated Mothers Day with our annual tea at the Cortland Center on Friday May 12th. Darlene Fry our center manager has been doing this special event for over a decade. This year, she received additional help from Diane Jordan our new Cortland Assistant Manager ( who celebrated her birthday that day), as well as from her daughters and other volunteers.
Over 70 were in attendance and heard from Shirley Griffin on ‘Vintage Undies’. She had displays and items to show from over 100 years worth of women’s underwear.
Betty Yauger and Nancy Nevin both received the Cortland SCOPE Mother’s of the Year honor.
Each member and guest received beautiful flowers to take home from Beth Massaro of Gateway Health, the official sponsor of the event. Cortland Care center also supported the event. SCOPE thanks all of the mothers in our lives.
See if you can find the Courthouse in this photo. Hint: photo taken by Sister Dorothy from the Warren SCOPE Riverside Railroad vantage point.
