President’s Letter
It feels like we moved right into Summer as I write this hopefully we’llbe having some milder temperatures as you’re reading this. We had a
fantastic spring cookout in May. A huge thanks to Arts & Ideas Sudbury
School for the use of their space and to BiRite, Harvest Fare, Hamilton
Quik Mart, Giant, Safeway, & Sam's Club for generous donations
allowing us to put on this event. I hope everyone had a great time.
We’re looking forward to more events like this in the future.
In business news, at our last community meeting WIA voted to join our
neighbors in Glenham-Belhar, Hamilton Hills, Harbel, Hamilton Business
Association, and Hamilton-Lauraville Mainstreets in opposing Council
bill 16-0667 for a conditional use of a banquet hall at 5501 Harford
Road, the former Blockbuster building.
The Tuesday Farmer’s Market starts up again this month down at the
Market Lot at 4500 Harford Road. As you may be aware, Hamilton-Lauraville Mainstreet is hard at work trying to develop that lot into a
commercial kitchen. The State of Maryland is expected to match up to
$250,000 toward improvements to that lot. I understand HLMS has
raised about $50,000 so far. If you are able to support this project,
please go to their website at bmoremainstreet.com and click the donate
button to support.
In other news, the project at Harford & Southern is moving forward. The owners of Maggie’s Farm are working to
raise capital towards their new location in Waltherson at 4803 Harford Road. You can help them out through this
link: https://www.gofundme.com/2mzq5mm4
Sadly, the Hamilton memorial clock was destroyed last month in a car crash. The clock was erected in the memory
of Dr. Russo, a popular family physician who was murdered in February of 1981. The Hamilton Business Association
is working with the driver’s insurance to ensure the memorial is replaced.
There are a lot of cool events coming to
Walther Gardens over Summer; you can see
the flyer for those later in the newsletter.
Waltherson will again have a table at the
Hamilton Street Festival on Saturday, July 30th.
Our next community meeting will be August
9th at 7:30 at Harbel and finally we’re looking
to lend our support the back-to-school block
party on Edgar Terrace on Saturday, August
20th
that has been put on annually byWaltherson resident Ruthie Samuels for the
past four years.
Happy June, Waltherson!
Kind Regards,
Robert J. Walshe, WIA president

NECOP – Northeast Citizens on Patrol
In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The
reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel
uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Communities with regular NECOPpatrols, such as the North Harford neighborhood, also see significantly less crime than
communities with inactive patrols.
Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and
an officer will give you a direct number to keep them in contact with the Police. You would then
proceed to patrol the neighborhood in your car. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and
Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. For anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please
contact Rob at [email protected]
