Friday 13th May was our Mum’s Night Out at the King’s Arms and was a fun and pleasant evening. The next

Mum’s Night Out will be on Friday 10th June, 7.30pm at the Rose & Crown. Our Family Craft

Afternoon on Saturday 23rd April at Elham Village Hall was truly a fun filled event. We raised over £400

which will go towards the insurance and maintenance cost for the play park. Thanks again to Cowling &

Wilcox for their generosity.

We have a number of FREE, as well as fundraising activities planned for the coming months too, details of which can always be

found in the Elham Newsletter, posters around the village and on our facebook page.

Elham Valley Walking Festival: Saturday 4th June. Meet Briony Williamson at the King George V Playing Field at 2.30pm

and enjoy a family walk (4 miles maximum) along the Elham Valley Way to Lyminge Playing Field and back. This is a flat walk

suitable for children aged 5+, but not suitable for pushchairs.

Annual Spooky Halloween Parade: October

We would like to run more free events for the children as well as make some improvements to the facilities at the play park,

but once the annual costs are met, there isn't a great deal left in the coffers, so we are continually applying for grants to enable

us to do this. Sometimes we are successful, but not always. Suffice it to say, Play For Elham needs you! We are looking for

volunteers to join our committee of three busy mums, suggestions for fundraising ideas and offers of help in any form. Please

email [email protected] or you can contact us by telephone:

Briony (840083), Emma (840447) or Christina (840232),

At Elham School you can tell that summer is just around the corner. Children are wearing summer dresses or shorts and

begging not to have to wear coats at playtime. You will also see and hear them playing on the field as this causes great

excitement at this time of year! The garden surrounding the playground is burgeoning – a mass of green shoots top the willow

domes, while the poly tunnel is fit to burst, with sweetpeas, tomato plants, sunflower seeds (if I’m not mistaken), cosmos and

many more seedlings, ready to be planted out.

In Hazel Class (year 1) the children have planted rocket and sunflower seeds. The rocket seeds have generated much

excitement because they have come from outer space and were sent by Tim Peake- the whole school is waiting to see how

the plants progress. One of the sunflower seedlings has gone missing…if you find it, please return it!

Another sign of the approaching summer is the newly marked out athletics course. Every week we are lucky to have Mrs

Horton, our specialist PE teacher, who is training us to take part in the summer sports day athletics competition. We have

some very talented athletes at this school, who also take part in competitions with other schools. We have already won the

Tag Rugby Tournament, Gymnastics Competition and the Handball locally and will now go to the county finals in the hope that

we can win these and move to the National Finals!

We are all looking forward to our Summer Fete on Saturday 25th June (11am-2pm). We have lots of amazing stalls and events

planned for the day including a cake competition with a theme of “A cake for the Queen.” We look forward to welcoming

you. Rosie Shepherd YR1 teacher

Elham Valley & Wye Lions Club

Last month we reported that the club was winding up at the

end of June. Well we have had some encouraging response

to this news, with some potential new members coming

forward in Elham. But we could still do with some more new

blood, so if you would like to get in at the start of what could

be an exciting new era, please call Neil on 01303 862837, or

see below.

Thanks to those who have supported our Easter Egg pub

draws this year, which have enabled us to donate £500 to Hi

Kent which provides hearing aid clinics in our area.

This month, at Barclays Bank in Canterbury, we enjoyed a very instructive talk on the complex nature of credit

fraud. The talk was thorough and outlined the many different types of fraud and ‘scams’ to be encountered. It

was a very informal evening and we were able to ask a great number of questions and talk about the subject.

The evening was rounded off by a lovely meal in Café Rouge before we caught the bus back to Elham.

June’s meeting is on 9th June and is an historical walk around Elham led by Derek Boughton. We start in St. Mary’s Hall at

7.30pm. If the weather is wet we meet in St. Mary’s Church. At this meeting please make sure you sign up for the Summer

Party to be held in July.

July’s Summer Party will be held on FRIDAY 8th at the Village Hall in the Peggy Pike room starting at 7pm with a welcome

drink. Husbands, partners and friends are welcome to join us.

We warmly thank you all who came and enjoyed tea at the Queen’s Birthday Tea Party. We are pleased to tell you that the

wonderful sum of £513 was raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Canterbury.

Sue London

The meeting on 21st April was treated to a very interesting and informative talk by Janet Bryant on herbs. She emphasised the

importance and many uses of these plants in so many varied areas of our lives from medicine, pure chemistry and, of course,

food. She discussed the growing and, in some cases, the controlling of the most popular herbs and how to use them.

On 11th and 12th June, we have nine gardens, all very different, open to the public - on the Saturday raising money for the

National Gardens Scheme. Do come and visit them and support our hard working gardeners.

On 7th July, we will be running a trip to the Hampton Court Flower Show. This is always a wonderfully enjoyable day. There

are a few places left so if you are interested then please contact Doug Martin on 840276 as soon as possible.

The speaker at the June meeting is Glyn Bareham talk entitled “May your Photos Bloom and Grow”. PLEASE NOTE - The

meeting will be on 16th June because of the Referendum. Frances Horton 840550

RHODES MINNIS EVENING CIRCLE

Attention, dates for your diary! Do you love plays? On Wednesday 15th June at 7.30pm in the

back room of the Coach and Horses, Lyminge, read a play in a friendly group. This is organised

by Lyminge Dramatic Society but non-members are very welcome. Get a drink and be ready to start at 7.30pm. Take a part or

just listen if you prefer. It would be helpful to know numbers in advance, so if you are thinking of joining us please either ring

David Vale on 01303 680019 or email him at [email protected]

The Autumn 2016 production will be Neighbourhood Watch by Alan Ayckbourn and will be directed by Trevor Gasson. It is

one of Ayckbourn’s more recent plays but, as ever, is very funny and has a number of characteristic and unexpected twists. The

casting evening, for the 4 male and 4 female parts of varying ages, will be held on Wednesday 6th July at 7.30pm at Sibton Park

Cricket Club. Trevor is looking forward to seeing a good many attending, both members and non-members interested in joining

us.

We will also be participating in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations on 16th July when members of our Society will be

clearly visible wearing our stunning costumes. If you would like to join our Society ring our secretary Liz on 862748. If you

have time, browse our website: www.lymingedramaticsociety.co.uk

Our Speaker in April was Don Wilks who showed us beautiful colour slides of his visit to South Africa where he travelled the

garden route to Cape Town and saw many animals, birds and flowers. The competition - a spring flower arrangement - was

won by Pat Barnes. On 15th June we meet at the new time of 2pm at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall when we are holding a tea

party for the Queen’s 90th birthday. For further details please contact Diana Bennett on 862134.

Is your dog Microchipped yet? Under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2014 it is compulsory for all dogs over the age of 8 weeks in England to be fitted with a Microchip and registered to an approved database from 6th April 2016. This law will be enforced by local authorities, police constables and community support officers and if your dog is found to not have a microchip and be registered to a database, you as the keeper will be served with a notice requiring the dog to be chipped in the next 21 days. If this does not occur you will be liable to pay a fine of £500. There are no exemptions regarding age, a dog will only be legally exempt if a vet certifies that it cannot be microchipped for health reasons on a form approved by the Secretary of State. Many of our patients are microchipped but the database registration is not up to date, so if you have moved house or changed your telephone number it is really important to update this information on the database. Microchipping provides permanent identification of an animal. The microchip cannot be tampered with and once inserted will last a lifetime. The microchip itself is about the size of a grain of rice, encased in a special capsule, designed to sit comfortably under your pet’s skin. The implantation is quick and simple – just like an ordinary injection under the loose skin at the back of the neck. At Bourne Veterinary Practice we regularly implant Microchips into dogs, cats, rabbits and tortoises. Breeders will be responsible for microchipping all puppies before they sell or give them away and all imported dogs will need to be microchipped. If you have any further questions about microchipping please give us a call at Bourne Veterinary Practice on 01227 832322.

Many of you will be aware of the proposal to reduce payments to pharmacies proposed by the

Department of Health and its potential impact on Lyminge pharmacy which serves so much of the

surrounding area. The problem was that the number of pharmacies in England was growing rapidly

and each new one qualified for a payment whether there were enough pharmacies in the area or not.

The Department of Health proposed cutting the cost by getting pharmacies to work on a ‘hub and

spoke’ principal to dispense medicines. This would certainly make sense in towns but presents real problems for standalone

rural pharmacies such as Lyminge.

The consultation by the Department of Health was to the pharmacies and did not involve the County Council despite our

role in Public Health and Social Care and our chairmanship of the Kent Health and Wellbeing Board. I raised the issue at

Kent County Council which led to it being considered at cabinet. As a result, the KCC Cabinet Member for Public Health

and Adult Social Care has written to the Government on behalf of the council to express concerns about the proposal and

call for the Department of Health to reconsider its plans to change funding of community pharmacies. We estimate that

over a quarter of Kent’s 280 pharmacies could be adversely affected by the proposal leading to reductions in service and

even closures.

The Health and Social Care Act 2012 transferred responsibility for the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) from the

Primary Care Trusts to the Health and Wellbeing Boards on the 1st April 2013. The Kent Health and Wellbeing Board

undertook a thorough review of all the pharmaceutical services in Kent and published its PNA in 2014. It found the overall

pharmaceutical service provision in Kent was good and that the current provision of “standard 40 hour” pharmacies should

be maintained especially in rural villages and that the current provision of “100 hour” pharmacies should also be retained.

The County Council understands the need for the Government to make savings (we have had to make considerable savings

ourselves) but it should be possible to target the support for pharmacies to where it is genuinely needed and make the

savings where there is overprovision. Pharmacies have a big role to play in helping relieve pressure on GPs and Accident

and Emergency services.

KCC also has a major role in helping the NHS in our social care services in both keeping people out of hospital in the first

place and helping get them back home and properly supported when they are discharged. I recently attended a briefing from

our Adult Social Services team and was impressed and moved by their stories of how they have helped people at a time

when they are most vulnerable. Even more cheering was that helping people to more independence had made the client

happier and saved cost for both the NHS and KCC. With social services now taking over 50% of KCC’s budget (it was 33%

just a few years ago) we need to do much more of this work.

From your County Councillor Susan Carey, Member Kent County Council, Elham Valley

CHURCH MATTERS At this time of printing I shall be well on my way on pilgrimage; just my Brother Simon and I, with two

small rucksacks, two hiking poles and the open road. We are in the midst of walking the Way of Saint

Francis. 22 days or so of walking 350 km backpacking in Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio amid forests

thousands of years old and valleys rich in art and history. We will have been walking through well-known

places such as La Verna and Assisi, to less well known ones, such as Montecasale or the Sacro Speco di

Narni. And, for each stage of the journey we will have been discovering event’s in Saint Francis’s life and

visiting the places he visited, lived in and prayed in.

Saint Francis is a figure who has continued to stir that perpetual engine of humble and simple spirituality a

source for many people who have found themselves in arid places in their lives. Gandhi says of Saint

Francis that he was the closest person to Jesus that has ever lived. The church has often portrayed Saint

Francis in a very gentle manner, as they often do of Jesus. But he was radical, fought convention that

completely turned his life upside down; from a son of a wealthy merchant who longed for fame from

battle field as a knight, to a hermit who lived in solitude and who gave up his inheritance living with lepers

and creating a monastic community.

‘…..as pilgrims and strangers in this world, serving the Lord in poverty and humility…’ ( The Rule of St

Francis 1238). The purpose of this pilgrimage has meaning because it is done on foot; its purpose is to walk to Assisi

and beyond, drawing ever nearer slowly; it is a time space, not just reaching your goal. Pilgrimage is

about solitude. It is about losing oneself to find oneself advancing towards oneself to join the Divine

within.

‘Here on earth, the eye of the soul is love, the only valid one to overcome any veil. Wherever the

intellect stops, love proceeds with its own colour to the union with God.’ (Saint Anthony from Padua-

Sermone.’)

In fact; ‘We are all pilgrims, our life a long walk or journey from earth to heaven.’ (Vincent Van Gogh.)

The greetings of pilgrims of old was; Ultrya! Suseya! (ever

onwards, ever upwards)

Notes from the Annual Parochial Church Meeting 27th April 2016

During the initial Vestry Meeting Mary Morgan and Peter Swain were elected Churchwardens. Bryan Shepherdson was

thanked for his work and support as Churchwarden over the past three years.

There are 121 names on the Electoral Roll.

There are 18 members on the Parochial Church Council including a non officio Methodist Representative and PCC

secretary. Geoff Webb and Dee Davies were re-elected to the PCC and Bryan Shepherdson, Ken London, Janice Cooper,

and Graham Ernest-Jones were nominated and elected.

Mary Morgan thanked all Church members who have worked so hard to keep things going during the long Interregnum.

Margaret Keeble was given special thanks for her work.

The Financial Report was approved. The Treasurer, Dr. Patrick Wheeler, said that our financial situation had eased a little

due to the reduced quota following the appointment of a part time priest. We no longer have to go into our reserves to pay

this Quota to the Diocese.

Fabric Report – we are keen to continue to keep the church open daily, although there were some petty thefts of donated

monies. Minor repairs are constantly attended to and we thank the Friends of St. Mary’s for their contribution to the

maintenance of our Grade 1 mediaeval church building.

All Committees gave Reports : The Worship Committee which organises the services, the Church Hall Committee which

deals with the upkeep and letting of the Hall, The Social and Fund Raising Committee which organises such events, the Care

Circle which organises visits and help for the sick and housebound, the Meeters and Greeters who welcome everyone to the

services, The Church Explorers, an initiative between the Primary School and the church to hold an after school club to give

children the opportunity to enjoy the church environment and to have an input into the kind of activities they would enjoy

within it. The Choir, the Servers and the Sacristy Team also made reports and also the Friends of St. Mary’s, and the

Deanery and Diocesan representatives. Bridget Johnson was thanked for her many years as Bookings Secretary for the

Church Hall. We urgently need a volunteer to replace her. Our retired priests who have worked so hard to keep the

services going during the Interregnum were also thanked once again. They have given their help and expertise tirelessly and

selflessly.

It is with great sadness that we are going to lose our excellent Organist and Choir Master Dr Lloyd

Davies. He and his wife, Sarah, have decided to move to the west country to be closer to their family.

Lloyd has been our Organist for over ten years and during that time has written music for the choir

and also two settings for the Sung Eurcharist. Sarah has been a regular member of the choir. We shall

miss them both.

We are now looking for a new organist. If anybody can help, or knows of a possible candidate please

contact the Churchwardens.
