The Great Inventors from India..!

ARYABHATT (MASTER ASTRONOMER AND MATHEMATICIAN) - Born in 476 CE in Kusumpur (Bihar), Aryabhatt's intellectual brilliance remapped the

boundaries of mathematics and astronomy. In 499 CE, at the age of 23, he wrote a text on astronomy and an unparalleled treatise on mathematics

called "Aryabhatiyam." He formulated the process of calculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim that

the earth is round, it rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space - 1000 years before Copernicus published his heliocentric theory. He is

also acknowledged for calculating p (Pi) to four decimal places: 3.1416 and the sine table in trigonometry. Centuries later, in 825 CE, the Arab mathe-

matician, Mohammed Ibna Musa credited the value of Pi to the Indians, "This value has been given by the Hindus." And above all, his most spectacular

contribution was the concept of zero without which modern computer technology would have been non-existent. Aryabhatt was a colossus in the field

of mathematics.

BHASKARACHARYA II (GENIUS IN ALGEBRA) - Born in the obscure village of Vijjadit (Jalgaon) in Maharastra, Bhaskaracharya's work in Algebra, Arithme-

tic and Geometry catapulted him to fame and immortality. His renowned mathematical works called "Lilavati" and "Bijaganita" are considered to be

unparalleled and a memorial to his profound intelligence. Its translation in several languages of the world bear testimony to its eminence. In his trea-

tise " Siddhant Shiromani " he writes on planetary positions, eclipses, cosmography, mathematical techniques and astronomical equipment. In the "

Surya Siddhant " he makes a note on the force of gravity: "Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets,

constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction." Bhaskaracharya was the first to discover gravity, 500 years before Sir Isaac New-

ton. He was the champion among mathematicians of ancient and medieval India. His works fired the imagination of Persian and European scholars,

who through research on his works earned fame and popularity.

ACHARYA SUSHRUT (FATHER OF PLASTIC SURGERY) – A genius who has been glowingly recognized in the annals of medical science. Born to sage Vish-

wamitra, Acharya Sudhrut details the first ever surgery procedures in “Sushrut Samhita," a unique encyclopedia of surgery. He is venerated as the fa-

ther of plastic surgery and the science of anesthesia. When surgery was in its infancy in Europe, Sushrut was performing Rhinoplasty (restoration of a

damaged nose) and other challenging operations. In the “Sushrut Samhita," he prescribes treatment for twelve types of fractures and six types of dislo-

cations. His details on human embryology are simply amazing. Sushrut used 125 types of surgical instruments including scalpels, lancets, needles,

Cathers and rectal speculums; mostly designed from the jaws of animals and birds. He has also described a number of stitching methods; the use of

horse's hair as thread and fibers of bark. In the “Sushrut Samhita," and fibers of bark. In the “Sushrut Samhita," he details 300 types of operations. The

ancient Indians were the pioneers in amputation, caesarian and cranial surgeries. Acharya Sushrut was a giant in the arena of medical science.

ACHARYA PATANJALI (FATHER OF YOGA) -The Science of Yoga is one of several unique contributions of India to the world. It seeks to discover and real-

ize the ultimate Reality through yogic practices. Acharya Patanjali, the founder, hailed from the district of Gonda (Ganara) in Uttar Pradesh. He pre-

scribed the control of prana (life breath) as the means to control the body, mind and soul. This subsequently rewards one with good health and inner

happiness. Acharya Patanjali’s 84 yogic postures effectively enhance the efficiency of the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive and endocrine

systems and many other organs of the body. Yoga has eight limbs where Acharya Patanjali shows the attainment of the ultimate bliss of God in samad-

hi through the disciplines of: yam, niyam, asan, pranayam, pratyahar, dhyan and dharna. The Science of Yoga has gained popularity because of its sci-

entific approach and benefits. Yoga also holds the honored place as one of six philosophies in the Indian philosophical system. Acharya Patanjali will

forever be remembered and revered as a pioneer in the science of self-discipline, happiness and self-realization.

VARAHAMIHIR (EMINENT ASTROLOGER AND ASTRONOMERA) - Renowned astrologer and astronomer who was honored with a special decoration and

status as one of the nine gems in the court of King Vikramaditya in Avanti (Ujjain). Varahamihir's book "panchsiddhant" holds a prominent place in the

realm of astronomy. He notes that the moon and planets are lustrous not because of their own light but due to sunlight. In the “Bruhad Samhita” and

“Bruhad Jatak," he has revealed his discoveries in the domains of geography, constellation, science, botany and animal science. In his treatise on botan-

ical science, Varamihir presents cures for various diseases afflicting plants and trees. The rishi-scientist survives through his unique contributions to the

science of astrology and astronomy.

The early history of Sikkim starts in the 13th century with the signing of a blood-brotherhood treaty between the Lepcha Chief Thekong Tek and Tibetan prince Khye-Bumsa at Kabi Lungtsok in North Sikkim. With the march of history, events in Sikkim saw the state pass through the process of democratisation and became an integral part of the Indian Union in 1975. Guru Padmasambhava blessed Sikkim route to Tibet. Sikkim is a blessed land, where

people from all communities live in harmony. Inspite of the fact that Sikkim comprises of different people and multi ethnic society, perhaps it is the most peaceful state of the Indian Union to promote communal harmony and human relations, a feat which is much expected in a plural society like India. The world's third highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, regarded as the guardian deity of Sikkim, dominates the tiny Himalayan State with its awe-inspiring beauty and majesty. Sikkim is one of the 18 Biodiversity hotspots in the world. The Sikkim Himalayas show tremendous biological di-versity. Rare and globally threatened Snow Leopard, Tibetan Argali Sheep, Red Panda, as well as highest altitude domesticated bovid, the Yak, Black-necked Crane and Fairrieanum Orchid some of the most important species found here.

Situated in the eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is one of the most beautiful States of the Indian Union. Every free nation of the world has its own flag. It is a symbol of a free country. The National Flag of India was adopted in its present form during the meeting of Constituent Assembly held on the 22 July 1947, a few days before India's independence from the British on 15 August, 1947. It served as the national flag of the Dominion of India between 15 August 1947 and 26 January 1950 and that of the Republic of India thereafter. In India, the term "tricolor" refers to the Indian national flag. The National flag of India is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of width of the flag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra. Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes. During the session of the All India Congress Committee which met at Bezwada in 1921 (now Vijayawada) a youth prepared a flag and took it to Gandhiji. It was made up of two colors-red and green-representing the two major communities i.e. Hindus and Muslims. Gandhiji sug-gested the addition of a white strip to represent the remaining communities of India and the spinning wheel to symbolize progress of the Nation. The year 1931 was a landmark in the history of the flag. A resolution was passed adopting a tri-color flag as our national flag. This flag, the forbear of the present one, was saffron, white and green with Mahatma Gandhi's spinning wheel at the center. It was, however, clearly stated that it bore no communal significance and was to be interpreted thus. On July 22, 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted it as Free India National Flag. After the ad-vent of Independence, the colors and their significance remained the same. Only the Dharma Charkha of Emperor Asoka was adopted in place of the spinning wheel as the emblem on the flag. Thus, the tricolor flag of the Congress Party eventually became the tricolor flag of Independ-ent India. Colors of the Flag: In the national flag of India the top band is of Saffron color, indicating the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The last band is green in color shows the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.

A GOOD INDIAN WIFE (Book Review)

Anne Cherian tells the story

"In the scheme of marriage, a wedding is just the beginning."

An absorbing tale of contrasts - A combination of India and America, tradition and modernity, oneness and individuality. Cherian's engaging novel melds the diverse cultures of two coun-tries. With a girlfriend and a career back in San Francisco, the last thing Neel needs is an arranged marriage. But that’s precisely what he gets. The Indian born American educated Neel wants to be entirely American and therefore is obsessed about marrying an American woman; and on the other hand a traditional southern Indian girl who has only trained to be a wife and knows of no other identify to aspire to. The story unravels a rather unlikely plot that brings them together, and even if one is forced to swallow it, one hopes for better things to follow. This book is about Lelia learning who she is and growing despite her situation. The author has crafted an elegant, poignant novel that is a joy to read, capturing the characters' intricacies, hopes and disappointments.

I love spring because flowers bloom and baby animals are born. I like

the sounds of birds tweet and the beautiful trees. I like the light blue sky

and the rain. I also like playing outside with my friends. In the spring

season you don’t have to wear a jacket. You don’t have to wear a jack-

et. You can go walking and jogging and there is a spring break for all

the kids at school.

This year for my spring break my family went to Disney world.

Easter, Mother’s day and Memorial Day are in spring. Every year I go to

Easter egg hunts. This year was the first year that my brother participat-

ed in an Easter egg hunt. For Mother’s Day I made crafts at home and

at school.

These are all the reasons that I like spring.

How to Make a Kite Flying a kite is a great way to spend a windy day outside. Instead of going out and buying one, you can easily make one at home with a few basic materials. You can make your kite any color or length you want and you can make it with or without dowels. Constructing Your Kite with Dowels 1.Gather your materials. You may have many of these materials on hand at home. Otherwise, try a craft store. Paper (square/diamond shape) You can glue 4 8.5"x11" pieces of paper together for a bigger kite Card stock is thicker and better than standard paper Tape Glue Scissors Ribbon Twine Two bamboo dowels (one the size of your paper diagonally, and one with an extra inch) 2. Fold your paper in half diagonally. Crease the paper well and open it up again. 3.Create your structure. Place the shorter one of your dowels in this crease and tape it. You want it to be flush with the corners of your pa-per. 4.Use your other dowel. Take your longer dowel and tape one end to a corner of your paper that doesn’t have the first dowel taped down. Alt-hough you taped the entire smaller dowel, only tape the end of this one. 5.Arc your dowel. Now that one side is taped down, arc your longer dowel and tape the other side to the opposite corner. Use two small pieces of tape to keep this arc in place. 6.Cut excess tape. If you have excess tape on your edges, cut it away to prevent your kite from flying without control. 7.Cut your ribbon. Glue your ribbon to your kite. You want it to follow the same line as your shorter dowel. It will make a colorful tail to help your kite stay in flight.[1] 8.Attach your twine. Tie your twine onto the sides of the arched dowel. As soon as the glue on your ribbon dries, you’re kite is ready to fly. Wrap your twine around a toilet paper roll if it makes it easier for you to reel in and out.

In And Around Charlotte 1. Sliding Rock (Pisgah Forest):

Sliding Rock is a 60' natural rock slide with a 6-7 foot deep pool at the base - perfect for you folks looking

for a waterfall to slide down. The slide is a Forest Service recreation area with lifeguards and staff are on

duty from Memorial Day week end through Labor Day. Beginning in May 2014, the fee to access the park-

ing area will increase to $2 per person (from $1 per person). You can also buy a season pass for $25.

Parking is somewhat limited, so go early if you can. It will be crowded on a summer week end. I think kids

have to be a certain size to slide alone, but can sit on the lap of an adult. There are bathrooms which are

open in season. For more info, call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3350.

2. Waterfall on the Barnett Branch Trail

This is a very easy waterfall to get to, but is virtually unknown

and not listed in very many references to waterfalls in the Pis-

gah Forest. It's a very easy 10-15 minute hike up a maintained

trail and is kid friendly. The 25 foot waterfall is on a low volume

creek so looks it's best after some recent rain. It can be barely

more than a trickle in drier weather.

3. Wilderness Cove :

This is a family fun fill place. Enjoy water tubing. It is hard to beat cool mountain water on a hot summer

day. Escape the heat and enjoy an exciting day on the river. Let the Green River guide you through the

wilderness with a mixture of peaceful floating and thrilling whitewater.

வசரும் இடம் ஒரு ஊர்வல ஒரு இனற வநசர் இருந்தார். அவர் ஒரு நாள் ஒரு சதருவழியா வபாய்க்கிட்டிருந்தார். ஒரு சினக அலங்காைம் சசய்யும் கனடனயத் வதடி அவர் வபாய்க்கிட்டிருந்தார். அவர் வபாகிற வழியிவல எதிர்ப் பக்கமாக ஒருத்தர் வந்துக்கிட்டிருந்தார். அவர் இனற வநசனைப் பார்த்தார். தன் னகயிவல இருந்த ஒரு னபனய இவருக்கிட்வட அன்பளிப்பாக் சகாடுத்தார். “ ஐயா… தயவு பண்ணி இனத என்னுனடய அன்பளிப்பாக் ஏத்துக்கணும்…. இதிவல தங்கக் காசுகளும், பணமும் உண்டு! -ன்னு சசான்ைார். இனறவநசர் அனத வாங்கிக்கிட்டார். வபாைார். முடிதிருத்தும் கனடக்குள்வள நுனழஞ்சார். அங்வகயிருந்த நண்பர் பக்கத்திவல இனத சகாண்டு வபாய் வச்சார். “ ஐயா…. இது தங்களுக்கு அன்பளிப்பு” -ன்ைார். அப்புறம் இவர் இருக்னகயிவல அமர்ந்தார். இனத வாங்கிக்சகாண்ட முடித்திருத்தும் நண்பர் இனறவநசருக்கு சினக அலங்காைம் சசய்ய ஆைம்பித்தார். அப்வபா… அந்த கனடக்கு சவளியிவல ஒரு சத்தம் வகட்டுது. யாவைா ஒருத்தர் புலம்பிக்கிட்டிருந்தார். “ நான் வாழ்க்னகயிவல சைாம்பத் துன்பப்படவறன்…..பணம் இல்லாமல் சிைம்மப்படவறன்….எைக்கு யாரு உதவி சசய்வாங்க….?ன்னு வருட கஷ்டத்னத அவர் சசால்லிக்கிட்டிருந்தார். முடிதிருத்தம் சசய்யறவர் காதுவல இது விழுந்தது. உடவை அவர் னசனக காட்டி அந்த ஆனள வைவனழத்தார். அந்தப் னபனய சுட்டிக் காட்டி அனத எடுத்துக்கிட்டு வபாங்கங்கறது மாதிரி னசனக காட்டிைார். அவர் வந்தார். அந்தப் னபனய எடுத்துக் கிட்டுப் வபாய்விட்டார். இனதசயல்லாம் அந்த இனறவநசர் கவைிச்சிக்கிட்டு இருந்தார். “ ஐயா… அந்தப் னபக்குள்வள நினறய பணமும், தங்கக் காசுகளும் இருக்கிறதாக என்கிட்வட சகாடுத்தவர் சசான்ைார். ஆைா நீங்க அனதப் பிரிச்சுக்கூட பார்க்காமல் இவனை எடுத்துக் கிட்டுப் வபாகச் சசால்லிட்டீங்கவள!”-ன்ைார். இதழுக்கு அந்த முடித்திருத்தறவர் சசான்ைார்: “ ஐயா….தாங்கள் இந்தக் கனடக்குள்வள நுனழஞ்சனதப் பார்த்தவுடவை… உங்களுக்கு முடித்திருத்தம் சசய்யறதுக்குப் பிைதிபலனை எதிர் பார்க்கக் கூடாது… எனதயும் வாங்கக் கூடாது….ன்னு என் மைசிவல நினைச்சிக்கிட்வடன். அதைாவல அந்தப் னபக்குள்வள வினல மதிக்கமுடியாத மாணிக்கம் இருந்தாலும் சரி…. எைக்கு ஆனச ஏற்படாது. உங்களுக்கு ஆனசயில்லாத காைணத்தால் நீங்கள் அந்தப் னபனயப் பிரிச்சுப் பார்க்கவவண்டும்! அவத மாதிரி எைக்கும் ஆனசயில்லாத காைணத்தாவலவய நானும் அனதப் பிரிச்சுப் பார்க்கணும்ன்னு நினைக்கவல! அந்தச் சிந்தனையும் எைக்கு இல்வல. இனறவைின் நாட்டம் வபால…. அந்தப் னப யாருக்கும் வதனவப்பட்டவதா அவருகிட்வட அது வபாய் வசர்ந்துட்டுது!” அப்படின்ைாைாம். நமக்கு வதனவயில்லாத ஒரு சபாருள் நம்மகிட்வட இருந்தாக்கூட அனத அடுத்தவங்களுக்குக் சகாடுக்க மைசு வைாது. யாருக்கு எது வதனவவயா அது அவர்கிட்வட வபாய்ச் வசர்த்துத்தான் முனற. ---ததன்கச்சியின் சுடவயான தகவல்கள் ததாகுப்பிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ைது.
