A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM…

As the year draws to a close, we can look back at all the events that have taken place at Castlemore and be proud of our accomplishments. Our students have demonstrated an outstanding amount of positive character and have done an excellent job representing Castlemore both in and out of the school during trips, sporting events, musical performances and community adventures.

We are very proud of all our students for their hard work and dedication to academics while working to achieve per-sonal goals. The end of the year always brings with it many changes. Grade eight students leave for high school and make way for a new group of junior kindergarten students. We wish the grade eight students well on their new adven-tures and we welcome all junior kindergarten students and their families.

We thank our incredible School Council for their support and organization of many events. It is only in partnership that we are most successful as a school. Our School Council members along with the support of parent, student and staff volunteers have been busy planning the annual Castlemore Fun Fair. An event of this magnitude takes many hours of work. As always, we appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in the planning and supporting this community wide event and on the day of the event as well. Our sincere thank you to everyone! We hope that you will come out and support this School Council sponsored event on June 2nd beginning at 5:00 p.m. at our school. Please see additional information about our Fun Fair in this newsletter.

Thank you to our amazing teachers, Educational Assistants and Designated Early Childhood Educators for their ongoing support of our school and our students. We are very grateful to have educators such as ours who are so committed to student achievement and well-being. We also want to recognize the hard work and dedication of the office staff for ensuring students are safe and managing so many jobs that are essential to the school running efficiently. Another vital part of the Castlemore team is our School Assistants who supervise students during the lunch hour and our crossing guards. We want to thank the entire Castlemore team for helping to keep students safe, happy and eager to learn.

A part of every school year is having to say goodbye to staff who will not be returning to Castlemore in the Fall. We will be announcing these changes through a written correspondence in the near future. Finally, we would like to wish each of our students and their families a fun-filled and safe summer break. The Castlemore Fun Fair is taking place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 2nd at the school. We hope to see all of our community members out in support of our school. Bring a lawn chair as there will be limited seating available. We would like to thank the School Council for the tremendous amount of work that has gone into plan-ning this event. As well, we thank all our staff members who support the Parent Community with this event as well as our Student Parliament and student body as a whole, who are led by their teachers to support in many areas. A community effort such as this is not possible without everyone’s input and involvement.

The Book Fair is coming to Castlemore! What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event? We invite your

entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair, almost $6 goes directly back to our school? Don’t forget to mark the dates on your calendar and remember to come visit us during the Fun

Fair. We look forward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair. Monday, May 30 - 10:10-3:30pm Tuesday, May 31 - 8:30am-3:30pm Wednesday, June 1 - 8:30am-3:30pm Thursday, June 2 - 8:30am-3:30 pm AND 5 - 8 p.m. (open during Fun Fair)

Junior Kindergarten Registration

We are still accepting Junior Kindergarten registra-tions for children born in 2012, and who live within the school boundary. Registration forms are avail-able at the office.

Walking to School

Now that the weather is getting nicer, we ask parents to please en-courage your children to walk to and from school if possible. A brisk walk back and forth to school will promote good exercise habits for our children.

Grade 8 Graduation

Plans have been finalized for our Grade 8 graduation. This special event for our Grade 8 students will be held on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Markham Event Centre. We thank our Grade 8 Graduates for being part of the Castlemore School Community and wish them well in their future endeavours.

All Library Materials Due Back to Castlemore! Later this month, teachers will be collecting books (belonging to the school) that have been

loaned to students. Please check around the house for any materials that belong to the school and return

them promptly. Library books are due back by Monday, June 6th. Our preference would be to have

the books returned rather than collect money for lost books. Thank you for your assistance in returning all library books by the deadline.

Lost & Found

Please be sure to have your children check the Lost & Found (located on each floor of the school) by June 24th, 2016 for any items they may be missing. After June 24th, all remaining items will be donated to charity.

Student Focus

With the onset of summer and all of the extracurricular activities going on after school, it is easy to let some of the atten-tion to homework slide. However, assess-ment and evaluation will begin for report cards very soon. We would ask that par-ents/guardians keep encouraging your chil-dren to keep up with their work in the class-room and at home. Thank-you!

Moving

In order to organize classes effectively for September, please let Castlemore PS know immediately if you plan to move. Call the school office at 905-887-1543 or email [email protected]

Report Cards

Students will receive their report cards on Wednes-day, June 29th. Students who are not at school on that day will have reports mailed to their homes.

The Importance of Daily Reading It is very important to encourage your child to keep reading during the summer. Many children find it difficult to get back on track with their reading come September. Some

research has suggested that students who are al-ready having difficulty with reading, get even farther behind during the summer months. The summer is also a great opportunity for avid readers to finally get to read the books of their choosing. It is very beneficial to keep a log or a journal of what your child reads as this helps them see their progress. It also helps you when you are talking to them about their reading. Your child can also record his/her ideas and thoughts about what he/she has read on tape, on the computer, or on an online blog. Here are websites with printable reading logs: http://www.countryclipart.com/ReadingLogs/myreadinglog1.gif http://www.countryclipart.com/ReadingLogs/myreadinglog6BW.gif

Student Medication

Pickup If your child has a supply of medica-tion or an Epipen at school, in the office, please arrange to pick it up prior to 11:15 a.m. on , June 29th, 2016.

Write a Travel Journal If you are traveling anywhere this summer, ask your child to keep a journal of the places you

went and the things you saw. Not only will it be a wonderful keepsake and memory for them, it

will provide a real purpose for writing. If you travel with a laptop, try an online blog for those

computer savvy children. They can add photos, brochures, maps and pamphlets. Write the date

at the top of each journal page and use these writing prompts to get the creative juices flowing:

Where did you go?

What did you do, see and learn?

What do you wish you had more time for?

Use 5 descriptive words (adjectives) to paint a word picture of something you saw

today.

Would you want to live there?

Why or why not?

SUMMER DRESS CODE, SUN PROTECTION, HEAT STRESS AND HOT

WEATHER

Spring has finally sprung! As the weather gets warmer we would like to take this opportunity to ask parents to review the Castlemore P.S. dress code with their children. The dress code is outlined in the Student Agenda and on our website in the School Handbook section. Please make sure that students come to school with proper sun protection (i.e. hat) and wear sunscreen to avoid overexposure to the sun.

“Most kids rack up between 50% and 80% of their life-time sun exposure before age 18, so it's important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely. With the right precautions, you can greatly reduce your child's chance of developing skin cancer. The majority of heat-related illnesses; fainting, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are considered minor. Although not life-threatening like heat stroke, they are, none-the-less, important illnesses: Heat-related fainting— dizziness, fatigue and irritability; lack of concentration, loss of the ability to make rational deci-sions

Heat-related cramps— painful arm, leg or stomach, muscle spasms; thirst and heavy sweating

Heat exhaustion— heat-related fainting symptoms plus loss of coordination, collapse Check out this website for helpful tips: http://kidshealth.org/ parent/firstaid_safe/ outdoor/ sun_safety.html

Student Bussing Eligibility Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Read a poem and let your child guess the next rhyming word. Have a treasure hunt. Leave picture or word clues to follow.

Let your child plan a meal. Look for sales and coupons and go to the grocery store together.

Uukkamathu Kaividale, pronounced Uuk-Ka-Ma-Thu Kai-Vi-Dale, means to persevere and

strive to reach one’s true potential. These Awards of Excellence are presented to students of

Tamil heritage from Grades 7 – 12, who have demonstrated outstanding skills and achievements

in various areas. It is the “UUKKAMATHU KAIVIDALE” team’s goal to encourage students to

strive for excellence. Castlemore is very proud of our grade 7 and 8 students Subeka Manokan-

than and Nilaan Sivanantham for being nominated for Academic Excellence. Students will be

recognized by YRDSB on June 9th.

MESSAGE FROM OUR TRUSTEE,

BILLY PANG -

As the school year comes to a close, I would like to thank you for all that you have done to help make this school year a successful one for our students. We share a common goal - to give our young people every opportunity to reach their full potential, and we all have a role to play in supporting that goal. However you choose to get involved, your engagement and support makes a difference. We know that good schools become better schools when they are connected with families. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of our students, families, staff members and community partners. We are creating a welcoming, caring and inclusive learning environment that fosters student achievement and well-being. As we move into summer, I encourage you to seek out opportunities to continue and complement the learning that takes place throughout the school year. That could mean taking a nature walk, visiting a museum or reading a book. Whatever your plans are over the next few months, I hope you have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer.

A healthy school involves the whole school community working together to help stu-dents, staff and families make healthier choices. A healthy school creates a health-

ier environment for living, learning and working.

Healthy schools promote youth engagement and resiliency, which helps students to:

Improve their concentration and learning

Increase confidence, motivation, self-esteem and mental well-being

Feeling happy, energized, calm, and relaxed

Obtain a greater sense of empowerment and connectedness

Access services they need in their community

Foster leadership skills and develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments

Learning to grow and maintain balance through the challenges of life

Committing to active living, healthy eating, environmental responsibility and car-

ing, safe and inclusive communities

Strive to continue living the “Healthy Schools” lifestyle throughout the summer!
