During the celebration of these Jewish feasts, the first fruits of corn harvest were formally dedicated with appropriate rituals and ceremony. If anyone owed some money, those depths were cancelled. 3) The Jubilee year was a year of rest for the land. Continued on page 5 CHURCH, A CREATED MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY By Fr. James N. Church, a created multicultural community, continued from page 1

People lived on what the land had produced in the past six years and whatever plant grew up by itself. Therefore, the number 50 was a number of thanksgiving, commemoration, rest, debt cancellation, and the beginning of a new life. The new community, the church, meaning those who are called out of the world, was intended to be for all people, not for some people, and is to reach out to all people, not only people who are our kind; it was intended to be a community where everybody is somebody and nobody is denigrated, rejected, ostracized, or left behind because of cultural, social, or economic disparities. The new community, the church, bears the mark of Christ’s redeeming works; out of his passion, death, and resurrection, a multicultural community was created by the Holy Spirit. Because God is God, God is always doing new things; the old passed away, a new day was born on the day of Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost, not only was an inclusive and multicultural community created, but also the worship was ecstatic and charismatic “the people were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages/tongues as the spirit gave them ability.” Though the church was created to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church and to rise beyond human divisiveness and religious prejudices, the new community disintegrated into denominations with theological, doctrinal, and liturgical differences. Though the new community was intended to be a multicultural community, it has also broken apart on racial and cultural lines as correctly noted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that the “most segregated day is Sunday.” A reminder is necessary every year that the church is intended to be a multicultural community; a place for all Christian believers to welcome all God’s people; not some people, but all people.

“There is a destiny that makes us brothers; none goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own.”

125 guests were served at Faith Lutheran Church on Monday, May 11, 2015. Thank you to our wonderful workers: Hector Nanka Bruce, Mercy Crabbe, Linda Garrett, Judith Goff, Brenda Hill, George & Nella Hunkins, The Rev. Diane McGowan, and Greg Payne. Thanks also to our partners from St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, directed by Joan & David Ingram.

    This ‘N That

His disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Acts 11:26. Kindness is not an act, it is a lifestyle. Sometimes it’s what we don’t say that hurts. Never cut what you can untie. –Robert Frost The earth has music for those who listen. –William Shakespeare The best use of imagination is creativity. We are new every day. Earth – the land of trials. Heaven – the land of joys. The manner of giving shows the character of the giver more than the gift itself. All of nature is a grand symphony conducted by the Creator. Caring for God’s creation is the believer’s duty. The worst use of imagination is anxiety. –Deepak Chopra The best gift for the younger generation is a good example from the older generation.

Defender of the Faith: The Rev. Denzil A. Carty

Some time ago, Vanne Owens Hayes asked that members of the church write some testimonies about the Rev.

Denzil A. Carty to accompany a request that he be named as one deserving nomination to sainthood. Although I

know very little about saints, I would like to share some thoughts.

I was a teenager when Fr. Carty, his wife Sylvia, and family came to be with the congregation of St. Philip’s

Episcopal Church in Saint Paul in 1950, where he served until 1975. The Parish was about to embark on the building

of a new church, both physically and spiritually. Our existing church was torn down, we began a building campaign,

and worshipped at the Hallie Q. Brown Center at the other end of the block.

While all this was about to happen, Fr. Carty took great interest in the young people of the church, even though he

was 50 years old when he came to Minnesota. Our youth group grew and flourished, we had a youth choir, half a

dozen acolytes, and a good Sunday school. The organizations all were busy raising funds, presenting events, and

attending meetings in the Diocese and the community.

About this time, highway 94 was going to happen, causing deep scars to the area. Fr. Carty felt it necessary to go to

the City Hall to speak about the future of the lives of folk in the area. He became the “foot soldier” for us and our

future. The new church got built, again setting many hands to work for the needed final touches.

Many years later, it was the Rev. Denzil A. Carty that led eleven women who wished to become priests, to be known

as the “Philadelphia Eleven” as they gathered from all over the country to ask to be ordained. They were denied and

later were ordained in California. We at St. Philip’s were fortunate enough to have one of the best known serve as a

    priest, the Rev. Jeanette Piccard.

The term Father, as we use it, is the head of the body, the caregiver, the provider, the comforter. Fr. Carty gave the

people of this area twenty-five years (1950-1975) of great leadership and persisted in the issues of housing,

education and employment, and most of all, our spiritual health. He was featured on television many times when he

    addressed the City Council.

We give God the glory for sending us this dedicated servant, defender of the faith. Thank you, Lord.

Dr. James N. Wilson, II, Priest-in-Charge.

Guests: Hector Nanka Bruce, Beverly Johnson, Harriet Sims.

George Thompson read the opening prayer from the Book of Common Prayer. This was an informational meeting.

We did not have a quorum, which requires the presence of five vestry members.

Acceptance of Agenda: Agenda accepted by Julia New-Landrum and seconded by Jennie Brown.

Minutes: March 17, 2015 minutes were reviewed. Jennie Brown reported she did not receive the vestry minutes via

email. We will confirm that Nicole has the correct email address.

Holy Trinity Family Ministry: No report or update from the committee. The dinner is May 16, 2015. It is important

that we pre-order dinners. A question came up about advertising the event. It was suggested that the event be on the

EMCN web page. Lance has posted the event on his Facebook page. It was asked who was doing the cooking for

the event and whether this is a take-out only event or dine-in at the church. If so, what are the preparations and who

will meet with the Finance Committee to work on a plan for payment.

Finance Committee Report: Hector Nanka Bruce reported that the Finance Committee had not met in the last two

months. They have a meeting schedule for next week.

    held every two weeks.

Vestry vacancies: Two positions remain open. George has announced it in church. No one has stepped up to fill these

    positions yet.

each week. No volunteers at this time.

Discernment Document/Time & Talents: George reported that the discernment document created some momentum

with the church. We should revive this document and get people engaged.

Time and Talent: Same people working on all projects. This should be of concern to the church. What can we do to

    get people involved?

    New Business

Holy Trinity Family Pictorial Directory – Life Touch: George presented information regarding the Life Touch

pictorial church directory. Those present thought this was a good idea and that we should move forward with this

Sunday in April to May 3, 2015, due to Fr. Wilson’s vacation.

    Other

Supply Priest April 26, 2015: George reported that Fr. LeBaron Taylor from Louisiana would be filling in for Fr.

Wilson on April 26, 2015. Harriet Sims asked if this had been approved by the Bishop’s office. She believes there is

something special we must do when getting an out of state supply priest. George will check on this.

Kinship program: Beverly Johnson reported there is a luncheon at Thrivent Financial on April 23, 2015. This

gathering is to learn about mentoring children. The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches is sponsoring this

    luncheon.
