Sunday School Needs YOU!

One of the wonderful things about children ’s Sunday School leaders is that we can always use more! One of the challenging things about children’s Sunday School leaders is that we always need more! What makes this wonderful? It ’s wonderful because there is room for you! We always need two leaders in every class to ensure the students ’ and teachers’ safety, and the extra sets of hands and eyes are a must. Please don’t sit back. Make the decision to join us this fall!

Why serve in the Sunday School program?

1. The children will enrich your spirit, expand your horizons and grow your faith – you need them in your life!

2. The lessons will challenge your thinking, give you new ways of sharing your faith, and deepen your own relationship with Jesus Christ. The lesson plans and materials have been selected and provided for you and require just a little bit of prep before greeting the children. No need to worry that you don't know how to lead - it's all right there for you.

3. Make good on a promise: Every time we baptize a child, we, as members of the household of faith, pledge to love and care for the children and help them grow in the knowledge and love of God through our Savior Jesus Christ. Serving as a Sunday School leader is a great way to make good on this vital promise.

We recognize that it is hard to make a commitment to lead a class each and every week. But we also recognize that the children thrive on consistency and the relationships they build with their leaders. Invest the time in our children. Get to know them. Ponder and pray for and about this ministry and consider how you can commit to a teaching team to be with a group of our kids at least twice per month. Help them build friendships within the church, help them hear the Good News, help them grow and understand the love and forgiveness Christ has to offer.

For more information about how you can serve, contact Pam Bentley at [email protected].

Youth Choir to Visit LUMC

We are pleased to welcome the Renovation Youth Choir from University City UMC in Charlotte, NC to worship with us on Sunday, June 28. The choir will be on a week-long tour in the DC Metro area and will be using our facilities as home base.

Throughout the school year, the choir learns music and dramatic arts, shares the gospel of Christ in concert settings, and participates in mission projects in preparation for their summer trip in June. Mission projects at home include serving at food banks, clothes closets, community

shelters, and projects for members of the community. The choir also enjoys sharing the love of Christ at retirement facilities, detention facilities, and recovery facilities in addition to churches and other faith based organizations. This year Renovation Youth Choir is traveling with fifteen youth and six adult leaders. Members of the choir are youth in grades six through twelve.

We invite you to join us at a potluck supper to welcome the choir on their arrival day, Friday, June 26 at 6:30 PM in Asbury Hall. If interested, please RSVP to Nancy Riley at [email protected].

Student Achieves Perfect Attendance

Can you remember a time when you achieved perfect attendance in school? What about in church? We all know it’s not easy - schedules are full, illnesses make the rounds within the family, vacations are planned. But for one child in our congregation, these things have not gotten in her way on the road to perfect attendance in Sunday School.

We are so proud of Addie Grinnell for achieving this milestone in her 4th grade Sunday School class this year. Addie has been in attendance every Sunday from September through June, regardless of any other activities that might have presented a conflict, because she wants to put God first. This was not an easy task for her or her family, who are involved in multiple sports requiring weekend practices and games.

What has inspired her? Addie says it’s the homework! Her teacher, Brent Akin, sends home crossword puzzles related to the bible story each week and encourages the kids to return the worksheet the following week. Addie says the candy she receives for doing so may contribute to her motivation! What else motivates her? Addie looks forward

to seeing her friends from different schools come together in the Blue Room, knowing that Mr. Akin will be there each week with a new story to tell.

Addie enjoys playing softball and was recently selected to the Leesburg Girls Softball League All- Star team. She’s involved in practices and games five days a week, typically on 1st base, 3rd base, or pitcher. In her “spare” time, she likes to play with friends, ride her bike or RipStik, and play with her two dogs, Squiggy and Dixie. She would love to travel back to Prague someday and eat waffles!

Way to go, Addie! We’re proud of you!

Archives: Help Us Identify Photos from the 80s and 90s

Oldies But Goodies...

The Archives Committee needs your help. There are a large number of photos taken of church activities probably in the late 1980's and 1990's. The people in the photos are not identified and we don't know what all of the activities were.

Throughout the summer we will set up some tables in Wesley Hall on Sunday mornings and spread out the photos. If you were attending LUMC back in the 1980's and 1990's, please stop by the tables and help to identify the people and possible what the activities were. We would like to identify as many as we can so we'll have them as part of an organized image collection.

LUMC Financial Update: April Report and Online Giving

The collections for April were up by 6.7% over what was given during the same period in 2014. Operations collections for the month of April were $57,807 and our Operating Expenses totaled $59,186 creating a shortage for the month of $1,379 and decreasing our Operations Reserve fund to $86,419. Total collections toward the Mortgage Fund were $8,135 which is $135 above the $8,000 payment. The Property Reserve fund balance is $132,505.

In April, our designated giving to various missions and ministries, including Run Me Home, Backpack Buddies, the Easter and Lent Offering to support our Missionaries, the Imagine No Malaria campaign and Youth Fundraisers totaled $11,472. Both the Designated gifts and the Memorials gifts are tracked and managed separately from Operations and Mortgage.

ONLINE GIVING

As the summer vacation season ramps up, there is a convenient way to uphold your financial commitment to LUMC while you are away. Online giving is now available through Church Teams and you can find easy to follow instructions at http://leesburgumc.org/onlinegiving. There is a small administrative fee that the church pays to Church Teams for online giving, however, most banks offer online payments to their account holders for free. Just contact your bank for the details. Whether you use Church Teams or your own bank for online payments, you can set up a one-time payment or recurring payments as often as you choose. Please consider signing up for online payments so that your giving goes uninterrupted while you are away. This will help to ensure that LUMC can continue to meet our financial obligations.

Thank you again for your faithfulness, your prayers, and your commitment to fulfilling God’s purpose for LUMC.
