This month, clergy and laity from Simi Valley
United Methodist and the other 348 churches of the
California-Pacific Annual Conference will gather
for our yearly meeting. Our very identity as an
“Annual Conference” is rooted in John Wesley’s
vision of Methodists gathering together once a year
for fellowship, formation, and the business of
ministry. John Wesley saw the annual conference as “the basic body in the
Church.” Each individual local church is the missional charge of that body to
a specific community.
This year, our annual conference will meet on the University of Redlands, CA
from June 17 to June 20. All gathered in one place, over 1700 people called
Methodist will be praying, worshipping, and discerning together in Redlands
that week. We will have communion together, study Scripture, remember
those church leaders we have lost to death in this last year, celebrate the
ministries of those retiring, and celebrate the ordination of new clergy.
The time between these reverent celebrations is filled with new learning
opportunities and Plenary Sessions where the business of the annual
conference is considered. Your clergy and laity will hear about and vote on
matters of budget, changes to conference rules, recommendations from
boards and agencies, and resolutions which shape the voice of the annual
conference.
Finally, striving for excellence in the local church will often mean sharing
giftedness beyond the local church. I express my gratitude to those serving in
ministries of the conference from SVUMC. Rev. Lew Fry has been the chair
of the Sessions Committee that does all of the logistics and planning. Rev.
Camille Mattick will again head the Children’s Ministries and Childcare and
Susie Strombotne will supervise the nursery program. Kalo and Tevita Inoke
will be on staff for Camille and Susie in the Children’s ministry. Rev. Rachel
Tabutol is returning after her family leave last year as the editor and lead for
the UM Daily which serves as the official record of the Annual Conference.
Thanks to you all for your faithful service! I have also been tapped to
provide some leadership this year as a member of the Conference Worship
planning team.
The theme for Annual Conference is “Judgment, Justice, Joy.” The theme
comes from the instruction of the General Conference (which last gathered in
2012) to each Annual Conference to practice acts of repentance related to the
injustices directed at Native Peoples. We will be highlighting and engaging
Native leaders from area North American tribes as well as native peoples of
Hawaii.
