WRO EDITORIAL JUNE 2015 WORLD RENDER OUTLOOK IS A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION BY THE WORLD RENDERING ORGANISATION (WRO) EDITOR IN CHIEF : STEPHEN WOODGATE WWW.WORLDRENDERERS.ORG WORLD RENDER OUTLOOK This is my last WROutlook as President of WRO. It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve as the President for the last two years. A lot has been accomplished, yet much more is possible. It is in this vein that I and my two vice-presidents, Tim and Fernando, have worked to show you, the members, the benefits of WRO and to make it an organization of high value to all. I am particularly proud of the updated WRO website launched during my term and the quarterly newsletter, the World Render Outlook. Both have received very positive plaudits. I also want to mention the Scientific Advisory Panel and their work during this period. The already-published Guidelines for Hygienic Rendering and the Model HACCP Plan for Rendering, together with the ongoing scientific efforts, show our industry in the best possible light to a global audience. I am pleased to report that the relationship with OIE has developed steadily since the Memorandum of Cooperation between OIE and WRO was signed 2 years ago. This relationship allowed WRO the opportunity to present their credentials to the OIE World Assembly last week. Click here to see the presentation. We have tried to make WRO more relevant and appropriate to our industry, and in recent weeks launched a survey to find out what members really want from WRO! The results of the survey have revealed some interesting findings, some expected, others not so. Members appear to be happy with the broad approaches taken by the presidency in the past, and communications with the global rendering community and beyond appear to be paramount. The focus on contacts with OIE and other key international bodies were endorsed and the participation of WRO in future international initiatives such as education is being encouraged. On a personal note, I wish to thanks all those that have given me great support during the years of my involvement with WRO, particularly during the six years of my being on the WRO Presidency “team.” Finally I wish the incoming president and the new presidential team all the best for their coming terms of office. Please give them your full support. OIE REPORTS On behalf of WRO I attended the 83 rd OIE meeting in Paris, France from 26-28 May 2015. The first highlight was the election of a new Director General by the national delegates representing the Member Countries of the OIE, by secret vote in accordance with the rule “one country, one vote.” Dr Monique Eloit, the candidate for France and the Member States of the European Union, was elected for a five-year term of office (2016-2020). After three consecutive terms of office as Director General of the OIE, Dr Bernard Vallat will pass the baton to the current Deputy Director General on 1 January 2016, who will then implement the Sixth Strategic Plan, which coincides with her term of office. Based at the OIE Headquarters in Paris, Dr Eloit will shape the destiny of the Organisation and manage the teams working at headquarters and 13 regional and sub-regional offices. During the last fifteen years under his leadership, Dr Vallat helped to extend the OIE’s mandate to include animal welfare, while consolidating its activities in the fields of animal health and animal production food safety. He has participated effectively in the management of global crises (influenza, foot and mouth disease). Please see full report HERE. President of the Terrestrial Animal Health Standards Commission, Alex Thiermann, introduced reports from the two OIE working groups; Animal production & food safety and Animal welfare. The Terrestrial Animal Health Standards Commission (Code Commission) met in February 2015 and during this meeting they also discussed mutual interests with the Scientific Commission for Animal Diseases (SCAD). The end result of the deliberations was a draft Terrestrial Code produced for discussion and adoption at the World Assembly. With regard to WRO members, the draft contained several topics of interest, but as expected (for this World Assembly, in particular) the subject of BSE took centre stage. As the result of SCAD deliberations and debate within the Code Commission, OIE has recognized ‘atypical’ (spontaneous) BSE as being different to ‘classical’ BSE. Furthermore, both Commissions recognized that a ‘negligible risk’ country declaring a case of atypical BSE could be ‘penalised” to the same level as having a case of classic BSE. WORLD RENDER OUTLOOK

This is my last WROutlook as President of WRO.

OIE REPORTS

On behalf of WRO I attended the 83rd OIE meeting in Paris, France from 26-28 May 2015.

After public review, the LEAP guidelines on the feed, the small ruminant and the poultry supply chain were presented. A draft of the guideline on the large ruminant has been introduced is now ready for public review. Please see HERE for the full report and press release

Please see the results of the recent WRO survey. The responses will be discussed at the annual WRO meeting on the 4th of June, 2015
