Yet, Jesus had something else in mind. He was about to raise Lazarus from the grave and show the world that He even has power over death itself; that He is able to restore life even when it’s stolen from us. And even though He has told Mary and Martha what He is about to do; their only response is… “Jesus, come and see; it is too late.” Jesus looks around and sees everyone missing out on what He can do; so overcome by what they know to be true that they are unable to see what God can do. And so Jesus looks on the crowd and weeps. Not because Lazarus had died, but because these people were unable to believe that God could do anything. How often do you go through life believing this? You know, that idea that God is capable of doing some things but not all things. Sure He can do miracles and all, but there are obviously some things that are outside of His abilities. Or maybe you are in a situation, and the stresses of the moment or the realities of life blind you from seeing all that God can do. “Sure God can do all things, but I need to deal with this first!” I truly believe that God still weeps in those moments where we miss out on all that God can and will do in our lives because we are unable to believe that it can be done. When God tells you that He has something amazing planned for you, that He gives you all that you need, and that He will go with you wherever you go, how often do you and I have trouble believing it? How often do you wonder when things will change for the John 11:33-37 – 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Come and see! The first time we hear these words in John it is Phillip trying to explain to his brother Nathanael that they have found the Messiah. The one who was going to show the world who God is and restore Israel was finally here! The blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the dead will live again! And in these few words we hear from Phillip to his brother an invitation to experience the impossible becoming possible. However, this time around these words cut. Lazarus is dead, and now there is nothing that anyone can do about it. Jesus is too late, and the people invite Jesus to come and see that death has the final answer. Their loved one and friend is gone…he’s been dead four days; there is no chance that he’s getting up. Couldn’t Jesus have done something to save his friend?! Why did he wait two days to venture out? Why didn’t he rush to his friend’s side and heal him before it was too late?! Sure, he didn’t cause Lazarus to die, but isn’t he still at fault since he could do something about it? If I saw someone who was in need, and I could do something about it but didn’t, I would be held responsible for not doing anything. • Yet, Jesus had something else in mind.

He was about to raise Lazarus from the grave

and show the world that He even has power

over death itself; that He is able to restore life

even when its stolen from us. And even

though He has told Mary and Martha what He

is about to do; their only response is Jesus,

come and see; it is too late. Jesus looks

around and sees everyone missing out on

what He can do; so overcome by what they

know to be true that they are unable to see

what God can do. And so Jesus looks on the

crowd and weeps. Not because Lazarus had

died, but because these people were unable to

believe that God could do anything.

How often do you go through life

believing this? You know, that idea that God

is capable of doing some things but not all

things. Sure He can do miracles and all, but

there are obviously some things that are

outside of His abilities. Or maybe you are in

a situation, and the stresses of the moment or

the realities of life blind you from seeing all

that God can do. Sure God can do all things,

but I need to deal with this first!

I truly believe that God still weeps in

those moments where we miss out on all that

God can and will do in our lives because we

are unable to believe that it can be done.

When God tells you that He has something

amazing planned for you, that He gives you

all that you need, and that He will go with you

wherever you go, how often do you and I

have trouble believing it? How often do you

wonder when things will change for the

John 11:33-37 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 Where have you laid him? he asked. Come and see, Lord, they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?

Come and see! The first time we hear

these words in John it is Phillip trying to

explain to his brother Nathanael that they

have found the Messiah. The one who was

going to show the world who God is and

restore Israel was finally here! The blind will

see, the deaf will hear, and the dead will live

again! And in these few words we hear from

Phillip to his brother an invitation to

    experience the impossible becoming possible.

    However, this time around these

words cut. Lazarus is dead, and now there is

nothing that anyone can do about it. Jesus is

too late, and the people invite Jesus to come

and see that death has the final answer. Their

loved one and friend is gonehes been dead

From the Pas tor s Desk cont . . .

better, how often do you live like you have

enough, how often do you avoid sharing the things

that God has done for you with others?

The good news is that Jesus still raises

Lazarus from the dead. Even when we have

trouble believing that God can and will do things

in our lives, He still works miracles. Whether or

not you believe it God will still heal the sick, open

the eyes of the blind, give people the ability to

walk on their own two feet, and yes, bring new

life, even to the dead. Whether or not you can

believe it right now is the thing that will make all

the difference between inviting people to Come

and see what God can do, and inviting them to

Come and see where they have laid the body.

    READINGS FOR JUNE

5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

    ~ Psalm 130

A Prayer for Courage Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by

paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not

knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and

your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen - Lutheran Book of Worship (Augsburg, 1978)
