www.royalnavy.mod.uk JUNE 2015 FOR THE NAVAL & LOCAL COMMUNITY IN & AROUND HELENSBURGH The Naval Service continues to deliver existing and emerging commitments on behalf of Defence and the UK Government and we continue to be delighted to hear of the achievements of our people despite the many challenges we have faced. We are acutely aware of the personal and collective sacrifices made to preserve and enhance operational capability and we equally recognise that these sacrifices extend, in the main, beyond the individual. Behind every Sailor and Marine there exists a family whose support plays a fundamental role in enabling Operational Capability. Collectively, you and your families are responsible for all we achieve. The existing honour and award avenues recognise the Service person individually or collectively in the case of unit awards. We have therefore elected to implement a new Navy Command annual award, titled the ‘Naval Service Outstanding Contribution’ award, which will recognise the Ship, Submarine, Naval Air Squadron or Royal Marine unit that has had the greatest impact on Naval Service outputs through the outstanding efforts, resilience and determination of its personnel and their families. Kindly sponsored by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, the receiving unit will receive a citation together with substantial funding to support a family event. Detail of the process and administration for the award is contained in RNTM 135/15. We are absolutely clear that, throughout 2014, one particular unit’s achievements fulfil every criterion, and their case was so compelling that they are undoubtedly deserving of this award. HMS VICTORIOUS Gold Crew and her families played a major role in delivering Continuous At Sea Deterrence, our most critical Defence output. Their utmost professionalism and strength of character makes the Ship’s Company and their families worthy recipients of the Naval Service Outstanding Contribution award for 2014.

JUNE 2015 FOR THE NAVAL & LOCAL COMMUNITY IN & AROUND HELENSBURGH

The Naval Service continues to deliver existing and emerging commitments on behalf of Defence and the UK Government and we continue to be delighted to hear of the achievements of our people despite the many challenges we have faced.

Bullying can have short and long-term effects on the physical and mental wellbeing of children and young people. Bullying can impact upon a child or young person’s aspiration, confidence, relationships and quality of life. Problems such as disengaging from school work, clubs and friends, to self harm and eating disorders can often manifest themselves as a means of coping. Children and young people who experience bullying can also avoid going to school or going online.

But the wider impacts of bullying, and the associated stress it can create, can also affect family members and the wider community. Strained relationships can be caused by disagreements or even feelings of blame or guilt when a child is being bullied. Some parents and carers who have experienced bullying themselves are often anxious that the same thing will happen to their child; even though there is no evidence to suggest that this is the case; and a lack of available help and support, or a determination to deal with the situation alone, can leave families feeling helpless and overwhelmed.

Bullying is an emotional issue for us all, but our relationships with our children are at the heart of us finding a way forward together.

Pictured above is our first Group from the Families Centre Chill Out Group to go through the Respectme Course with trainer Davina Blair (back row, third from left).

Respectme’s website offers practical advice and guidance for adults on addressing bullying behaviour. There is also a section specifically for children and young people offering practical advice on what to do if they’re being bullied.

If your child is being bullied and would like to speak to an adult in confidence, they can contact Childline on 0800 1111. If you are worried about your child and would like to talk to someone in confidence, you can call Parentline Scotland on 08000 28 22 33.

Serving armed forces personnel and their families are very mobile and as such it can be difficult to establish their place of ordinary residence as they can reside in various parts of the UK and overseas for varying periods of time.

As a result, Scottish Government and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) policy, is to consider the place in which the serving forces member was living before they first joined up as their place of ordinary residence. This is regardless of whether they and their family member(s) are living abroad or in the UK, and where in the UK they want to study.

This approach is taken across the UK and means that all serving forces personnel and their family should be eligible for student support from their home part of the UK.

So in most cases, if they are a member of the armed forces and their family member i.e. husband, wife, civil partner, or child (including step child, adopted child and foster child) are entering higher education (i.e. studying for an HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification) and they signed up for the armed forces in Scotland, their family member will apply to SAAS for support regardless of where in the UK (or abroad) they are living. If they signed up in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, their family member will apply to that country’s funding body for support.

However, there are some circumstances where it is possible to consider a member of the forces and their family as ordinarily resident in Scotland, despite them living elsewhere in the UK before they signed up, for example, where a forces family have moved off base and set up home in the local community, and have remained there while the serving forces member is posted elsewhere. In this situation institutions and SAAS are likely to consider the family as ordinarily resident in Scotland.

Gary Alpin from Aggies Braeholm is running a four week Cookery Course in partnership with RNRM Welfare in the Families Centre during May and June. Gary explained ’This is a four week introductory course to cooking and our aim is to show you some cost effective, family friendly recipes that you can easily prepare at home. Cooking is a great stress buster—take out your frustrations kneading that dough! It is also a great way to involve your children—weighing out ingredients, choosing their own toppings for pizza, stirring the mix.’

The plan for the Course will be: Week 1 Lentil Soup—perfecting your knife skills! Week 2 Pizza and scones—get kneading Week 3 Chicken Curry—slow cookers and using different cuts of meat. Week 4 Open to suggestions.

Week 1 as above was Lentil Soup—Perfecting your knife skills where Gary teaches about soup ingredients and how to chop vegetables easily and safely.

The Corner House in Rhu, Helensburgh celebrated 70 years since Victory in Europe with a good old fashioned street party!

Users of the community house organised a BBQ, cake bake off, lego building, face painting and a baby Winston Churchill look alike competition to celebrate. In try British style the weather plotted against them although there was a break in the clouds for the BBQ’s to be fired up by the men and the tasty food that Aggies Braeholm kindly provided to be cooked.

The event also coincided with the Corner House celebrating its first year of running as a community base for serving members and their families to use. In the past year the house has gone from strength to strength with the help of funding from the RNRMC, now running several coffee mornings, Stitch and Blether classes, Book Club and Saturday Sanity sessions, not forgetting all the special events that are organised and run by the users of the house. The Corner House decorated for VE Day

From 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA. The counterpart was introduced to display driving licence details that could not be included on the photocard. These details include some vehicle categories you are entitled to drive and any endorsement/penalty points.

If you already hold a paper counterpart, after 8 June 2015 it will no longer have any legal status. You should destroy your paper counterpart after this date but you still need to keep your current photocard driving licence.

Paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed. If you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only. The NFF was established in 2003 and has grown into a well-respected organisation that works to ensure the views of Royal Naval and Royal Marines families are independently represented to the MOD and Government. After 11 and a half years at the helm, Kim Richardson OBE has decided to step down from her post, and in June we will welcome our new Director; Anna Wright. As a Naval wife, and having enjoyed a Naval career

herself, Anna is looking forward to the opportunity of taking the helm at the NFF. She has been married to a Logistics Officer for over 19 years and they have two children, aged 18 and 14. Anna also served as a Logistics Officer for 12 years, both as a Regular and briefly as a Reservist. Highlights of her time in the Service include being part of the team to set up the NFF in 2003, and competing as part of the Royal Navy’s Women’s Skiing Team (before breaking her jaw during a downhill race!). Having left the Navy to bring up her young family, Anna re-trained as a Business and Economics teacher, completing her teaching qualification at Portsmouth University in 2008. She has since taught and managed in three Further Education Colleges whilst accompanying her husband on his Service postings. Taking advantage of the close proximity of her Service Family Accommodation to Brunel University, she completed a Master’s degree in Education in 2014. Anna is no stranger to the nomadic life of a Naval wife. She has lived in six different quarters, ranging from Faslane in the North, to Portsmouth in the South. The family home is on the Isle of Wight and in her new job she is looking forward to clocking up some sea time during her daily commute to the NFF office in Portsmouth. Providing a hotel and taxi service for teenage children means that spare time is a rare commodity, but when the opportunity presents itself, Anna enjoys unwinding with a good book or walking on the beach.

Riverside is home to some of the world’s finest cars, bicycles, ship models, trams and locomotives. Interactive displays and the hugely popular historic Glasgow street scene bring the objects and stories to life. The objects on display have increased from 1400 on display at the old museum to over 3000 at Riverside Museum including a new addition, and one of the largest locomotives on display in Britain, a huge export South African locomotive designed and made in Glasgow. At Riverside, many of the most significant cars and bicycles are displayed on the floor of the museum and there is far more

information provided about them. The cars on the 'car wall' and the bicycles on the suspended 'velodrome' are interpreted from the floor (and from the first floor) by large touch screens. Each of the cars has been photographed 360 degrees inside and out and a huge amount of related photograhs and information is included on the touch screens.

2. If a hen and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will half a dozen hens lay in half a dozen days?

. 1. The balls to the right are arranged into a pyramid shape. Can you turn the pyramid up side down by moving three balls?

4. You have just purchased a giant mansion with a wine cellar in the basement. On the main floor, next to the staircase, are 3 light switches that control light bulbs in different parts of the house. You would like to know which one turns on the light in the wine cellar. How can you determine which light switch is wired to the wine cellar by making a SINGLE trip to the basement? Note that this is not a trick question. You are alone in the house, the wiring is hidden behind the wall, and the rooms controlled by the three switches are not visible from where you are standing. The solution is strictly in the manipulation of the light switches. You can do whatever you like with the switches, but once you go down into the wine cellar you need to know for sure which of the three switches is for the wine cellar.

3. You have two identical coins. If you place one above the other, as in the image below, how many times will the top coin rotate completely (360°) as it orbits around the coin below it before returning to its original position?

6. The image right shows a pool rack with 15 billiard balls which fit perfectly within the rack (i.e. there is no extra space for any of the balls to move). Note that the rack above is slightly smaller than an actual/standard pool rack in which there is a small amount of space between the rack and the balls. What is the maximum number of balls that can be removed from the rack such that the remaining balls are still immobilized (i.e. unable to move)?

5.

Mary's father has 5 daughters. Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono, and __?__ What is the fifth daughter's name?

QUESTION 1 Answer: 400 miles. On the final day I cycled the remaining 5 miles. On Day 5 I started with 15 miles (as I cycled two thirds, leaving 5 miles). On Day 4 I started with 25 miles (as I cycled 10 miles). On Day 3 I started with 100 miles (as I cycled three quarters, leaving 100 miles). On Day 2 I started with 200 miles (as I cycled half, leaving 100 miles). On Day 1 I started with 400 miles (as I cycled half, leaving 200 miles).

QUESTION 2 Answer: Grandfather 66, Grandson 6. When Grandfather 61, Grandson is 1 (61 =1 x 61). When Grandfather 62, Grandson is 2 (62 = 2 x 31). When Grandfather 63, Grandson is 3 (63 = 3 x 21). When Grandfather 64, Grandson is 4 (64 = 4 x 16). When Grandfather 65, Grandson is 5 (65 = 5 x 13). When Grandfather 66, Grandson is 6 (66 = 6 x 11). So on the sixth birthday, they are 66 and 6 respectively.

QUESTION 3 Answer 162: The Coxswain hid 54, leaving 108. Russell hid 36, leaving 72. Windy hid 24, leaving 48. 48 apples were then available to share in the morning. To work these numbers out, we start at the end and work backwards. At the end there were 16 apples each, therefore there were 48 apples. Windy removed a third leaving 48, so there must have been 72 apples before he did this. Russell removed a third leaving 72, so there must have been 108 apples before he did this. The Coxswain removed a third leaving 108, so there must have been 162 apples before he did this.

QUESTION 4 Answer: Purchase 1: £11.50, £12.00, £12.00, £12.50 = £48.00 (which gives a 24% discount on the next purchase). Purchase 2: £13.00, £13.00, £14.50 = £40.50 minus 24% discount = £30.78. For a total cost of £78.78.
