From the Principal’s Desk

From the Principal’s Desk

Where has the time gone? June is here, the last month of school. Summer is just around the corner. The out-side temperatures are rising, soccer and ball are in full force and families are spending time outside enjoying the long-er evenings. It can get more and more difficult to keep students on track at school until the end of June with all that is happening in their lives at this time of year. We ask for parents’ assistance with having their children well rested and ready to learn for this very busy last month of school.

Provincial Achievement tests have already begun their staggered start for grades 6 with still more PAT and Diploma exams to come. All levels are finishing up their last units, putting together final evaluations and exams and getting ready to put together the final report card for the year.

Our grade 7 – 12 students who participated in Track and Field this year put on a great showing in their competi-tion in Carstairs. Grades 10-12 competed one day and the 7-9 had their competition a week later. The top competi-tors go on to Zones and we have two great teams going.

Our Fantastic Friday was a hit this year. We thank all of the people who helped make our fantastic Friday so

much fun and beneficial for our students. As you go through the summer, keep in mind any ideas that you or some-one close to you might be willing to offer our students in one, or more Fantastic Fridays that we hope to run next year.

This years’ Puddle Party was once again a colossal success. A huge thank you goes out to the Cremona

School Enhancement Society for all they have done for the school to enhance the learning of our students. A big thank you goes out to all those who have assisted with CSES in the variety of fundraising activities they have done.

All Band students were involved in some variation of an off campus Band trip. With their final concert on June 9th, we are sure to see and hear the fruits of their labor. We have to thank Darren Jacobson for providing our band students with the opportunity to improve their playing skills and providing them with the opportunities to work with mu-sical professionals.

Spring Sweep had great weather this year and were able to completed the jobs in a week. The graded 9 – 12

students worked a variety of odd jobs as one of their major fundraisers that go towards their graduation. The grade 10s brought in the most money for their graduation followed by the grade nine class. Thank you to Ray Pereversoff and Gerard Kulcsar who headed up this event and to Mrs. MacDonald who helped out on the school end. Thank you all who helped out by providing our students with the many jobs.

Time change for next year’s school day. Through feedback received from the parent survey that was complet-

ed in March, we have shortened our school day to end at 3:00 p.m. With the shortening of the school day, there will be no afternoon recess for elementary and we will be able to put more supervision outside for the other two recesses.

It never ceases to amaze me how this community continuously supports the students, staff and school as a whole. As a whole you have supported our school in a multitude of ways such as: School Council, CSES, Band Soci-ety, Drama, Breakfast Program, Youth Leadership, Assemblies, Fantastic Fridays, Milk Program, Sports teams, Classrooms, Teachers and most of all our students. Thank you for continuing to support our school and your chil-dren’s educational experiences. Have a great month and an even better summer break. We hope to see you at the school and around the community and of course see you again in September!

Counselor's Corner

Reflections on a year of meaningful learning

A Message from the Superintendent

With the end of this school year approaching, we can look back with pride on a highly successful year of learning and growing in Chinook’s Edge!

Thank you to our students, our teachers, and our entire Chinook’s Edge staff for your hard work throughout the year. Our stu-dents have earned praise and appreciation from many groups for their efforts, as they take leading roles in artistic, academic, athletic, humanitarian and environmental projects. We continue to see positive improvements on both locally-administered and provincially-administered assessments of student learning. We are particularly proud that, for the second year in a row, we are seeing 81 percent of our students completing high school – which remains substantially higher than the provincial average of 75-77 percent. From the moment they enter Kindergarten to the time they graduate from high school, Chinook’s Edge stu-dents are surrounded by people who care about them and about their success. From this strong foundation, they are in a great-er position to continue achieving throughout their lives.

Along with our trustees, parents, families and community partners, we have shared an outstanding year together. Thank you for challenging, encouraging and believing in each of our students, and in one another. Enjoy your summer!

COUNSELLOR’S CORNER

GRADE 11 PARENTS: I spoke with these students on Thursday and gave them information about scholarships, volunteerism,

post-secondary applications, Trade sites, and the importance of their final grade 11 marks for next year. The universities are

NOW looking at final grade 11 marks for conditional acceptances. Please ask for the handouts or contact me if you would like

the information online. I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE THEM TO GET ON OUR myblueprint.ca career site THIS SUMMER! It

has everything from post-secondary schools to possible careers to resume writing. I cannot stress enough that scholarship

hunting involves parents!!!

GRADE 12 PARENTS: Please remember that Rutherford applications must be completed online in July for scholarship mon-

ey. This is money given ONLY to those who are accepted at a college or university (Trade course as well). They only apply

once they are accepted. IF they take a year or three off, they apply at that point. If your teenager wants to pursue a Trade,

please call me immediately as there are several openings in the area.

GRADE 10 PARENTS: All of our Grade 10s should have, at this point, completed the “Explorations” portion of our myblue-

print.ca site. This will give them an “area” of career choice based on their responses to the questions. This important site has

thousands of career ideas – it gives the required schooling, info on the actual job, the salary, and even has interviews posted

to explain it. Our activation key is “Cremona.”

ITALY AND FRANCE 2015!

After 2 years of planning our adventure was finally a reality! This trip was different from others in that I planned the itin-

erary and there were many more adult travellers. I was a little nervous hoping that everyone, students and parents, would

enjoy the adventure. “What was the best part?” My Middle School students asked me this in class but I found it difficult to

pinpoint one great memory!

We toured the usual spots in Paris – the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter, the Arc de Triomphe, a Seine River Cruise,

and Verseilles. I loved their enthusiasm upon reaching the top of the Eiffel Tower!

Nice was great – the students were so excited to splash in the Mediterranean, this was also the beginning of our gelato crazi-

ness.

Eze was popular, it’s a beautiful medieval village perched on a hill; they had fun climbing and exploring the narrow streets.

Monaco – a favorite of many, was perfect. Clean and safe, complete with a castle.

Cinque Terre was next, beautiful villages perched on cliffs. Our hotel was located 1 block from the beach!

San Gimignano is a small, walled village in the Tuscan hills, and along with Siena, we enjoyed walking cobblestoned streets and

learning about the architecture.

There was no line-up at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome so we could actually enjoy Michelangelo’s artwork in the Sistine Chapel!

Our Guide was outstanding as was the visit to the Colosseum and the Forum.

Sorrento was next on the agenda with its winding streets and flowers in full bloom. We then took a ferry to Capri, a boat to

the Blue Grotto, and then a small dingy into the side of a limestone cliff to marvel at the turquoise cave.

“What was the best part?” For me, it’s always the same favorite memory…..watching the teenagers as they learn and experi-

ence a “live classroom.” Throughout the 12 days, they were exhausted but yet remained enthusiastic, positive, and eager to

go to the next place. And nice. And the parents? I guess that’s why the students were so great! I couldn’t have had a bet-

ter group, each dinner was filled with lots of laughter and discussions. Thank you parents, you made this trip so enjoyable!

And as for my amazing teenagers, I hope this trip was only the beginning of your travel adventures! Thank you……JoAnna,

Callie, Mark, Jody, Shanelle, Randell, Jennifer, Mike, Jessica, Morgan, Kara, Mackenzie, Dana, Doreen, Brooklyn, Terra,

Roxanne, Drew, Kelsey and Taylor!
