In her address she commended the ‘courageous and generous decision’ to invite ‘a female, North-ern Protestant to speak at a Catholic, Republican commemoration’. My dear Parishioners and other friends, I write on the Monday after the results of the referendum mentioned below was announced. The following is a press release from the Church of Ireland House of Bishops. i.e. 12 bishops covering the 32 counties. I am particularly glad that they included the last paragraph below. “The archbishops and bishops of the Church of Ireland wish to affirm that the people of the Republic of Ireland, in deciding by referendum to alter the State’s legal definition of marriage, have of course acted fully within their rights. The Church of Ireland, however, defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and the result of this referendum does not alter this. We would now sincerely urge a spirit of public generosity, both from those for whom the result of the referendum represents triumph, and from those for whom it signifies disaster.”

That is one issue. Now another for the Church of Ireland. I personally have difficulty with the term “1916 Celebra-tions” ‘1916 Commemoration” yes, but for me, “Celebration” NO. Bishop of Meath and Kildare (pictured right) has highlight-ed the vital importance of how we conduct this decade of historic commemorations because ‘history is not simply what happened, but the way what happened is remem-bered’. Bishop Pat Storey was speaker at the Annual 1916 Commemoration Ceremony on May 6, at the Church of the Most Sacred Heart in Arbour Hill, Dublin.

The Rector’s letter contd.... A farewell to SAM STOTT. Over the last 3 ½ years, “Sam the Youth Worker” has very much become “Our Sam”. Alas and alack for us, Our Sam will be moving to work in Toronto at the end of June. Canada’s gain truly is our loss. Sam’s gifts and abilities are truly multiplicitous. I recall William, the Pantomime Director commenting that Sam replied “Yeah” to every request, no matter what it was. ‘Witty, deeply caring, wise, man of the world, great company and with a deep Christian Faith’ describes Our Sam. We wish Sam every blessing as he brings the Good News to further afield in an often troubled world.

****** Following Family Service and presentation of Sunday Club prizes on Sunday 14th June, there will be a BBQ and Fun Day. Your Invitation is included in this Newletter - we look forward to seeing you.

NEPAL EMERGENCY APPEAL

On behalf of The Bishops’ Appeal - thank you for your generous response to this appeal. As always, the money raised goes directly to the people working on the ground. No middle men - no spurious expenses. The enormity of this earthquake will be felt for many years by the people of Nepal and surrounding areas and all we can do is support them as much as possible through our giving. Donations can always be given to The Treasurer at any time of the year. Many thanks once again,

Anne Thompson

June 2015

Dear Parishioners, Firstly, please put the date in your diary - 5

th September 2015, as you really don ’t want to miss the annual

Rathmichael Parish & School Fete. Planning for Fete 2015 is already well underway by The Fete Committee. As we look forward to Fete 2015 one certainty is that we need everybody’s help to make this year’s Fete enjoyable and successful. There are so many ways in which you can help –

What can YOU do to support the Fete?

We need donations of goods – our list of stall managers is included and they will be delighted to hear from you in due course. But it’s not too early to start putting things aside for the Fete – or perhaps growing some plants that you may wish to donate to our plant stall or maybe you can begin your plans for making some jam during the sum-mer. It costs a substantial amount of money to hold the Fete as we have to hire in tents / tables and other equipment. We need sponsors and donors to help with these costs so please contact any Fete Committee member if you are in a position to provide sponsorship or make a financial donation to support Rathmichael Fete. We need “manpower and womanpower” as we need helpers for every stall. We especially need support during the week of the Fete with sorting and stacking etc. Please consider giving us one or two nights during that week.

We need help and support in getting everything set up the day before the Fete. There are many other ways to help also

* donations of raffle prizes

* help with publicity

* supervising the car parks

* putting up tents

* erecting signs, etc. etc..

The list is endless so please give one of the Fete Committee a call or send us an email.

We will be delighted to hear from you and your help and support will truly

be appreciated.

5

Fete Publicity Owing to restrictions imposed by Dunlaoghaire/Rathdown County Council we are not allowed to put posters up in public places and we are asking anyone who has a garden, especially on a busy road, to consider letting us erect a sign in their garden for the week before the Fete to help advertise Fete 2015. Please contact John Bolton or Mark Kenny

If you are new to the Parish then please don’t be shy – the Fete is a great way of getting to know people. If you are a long established Parishioner then don’t be shy either - we need everybody's help and support to make Fete 2015 successful. Contact details for the Fete Committee members are included so please get in touch if you would like to help us or if you have any questions or queries about Fete 2015. In advance I would like to thank you all for your continued support for this most important event in our annual Parish life.

So, please, please help us – WE need YOU.

Rathmichael Football Team

Win League!

C Congratulations to the Football Team on winning the Inter Primary “B” League on Monday 11

th May. In a thrilling last,

“winner-take-all” match against Sandford National School, they fought hard in windy conditions to win 2 0, thus securing the league. Rathmichael, with the wind at their backs, scored in the first half, having withstood Sandford's early pressure. Fionn O'Loan finished off a good team effort. In the second half, Josh Bradshaw, in the Rathmichael goal, pulled off a number of first class saves and kept them in the game. The match was put beyond the reach of Sandford when, from a Sean Schutte free kick, initially saved by the Sandford keeper, Kian Gosling kept his cool and put the ball in the back of the net. Many thanks to Jim Schutte, ably assisted by his wife Aishling, who stood in for the team coach, Conor Jennings, who was un-available on the day. They did a great job. Thanks to Conor for all his hard work and patience with the team throughout the year and thanks also to Trish O'Neill for managing the team and ensuring they got to matches. Thanks also to Andrew “Ellie” Ellis for his refereeing skills – the team kept a clean sheet on the card front this season. The par-ents deserve a special mention for coming out in all weathers to encourage the team from the sideline and also for putting up and taking down nets for home games. Last but not least a big thank you to the team members, many of whom also played on the Cup winning hockey team so this is a great double for the school: Josh Bradshaw, Jack Cullen, Eva de Freine, Callum Desmond, Kian Gosling, Ben Hickmott, Sam Hickmott, Saul Light, Tim Norwood, Fionn O'Loan, Rachel Patterson, Eliot Perry, Conor Round, Seán Schutte, Pia Sim-mons and Adam Walsh. Also thanks to Callum Hewat who stood in for Sean Schutte in a recent cup game. Caroline Senior Principal

Irish Dancing Clare Dowling comes in during the summer term for a six week period to cover Irish Dancing with 1

st to 6

th Classes.

I feel this is important as it is part of our heritage and cul-ture. Unless this is carried out at Primary School level the children very rarely get the opportunity to learn Irish danc-es. When I am in the hall I see happy smiling faces doing a lot of very healthy exercise. This can only be of benefit to the children. It is good to see especially as Rathmichael is an Active School.

French Our French classes are taken by Catherine McGovern. She teaches both 5

th and 6

th Classes. As part of this they

have conversations, sing, do drama and learn grammar and vocabulary. This week we had a French Assembly led by their teacher. Both classes were involved. It was wonderful to see the language in action and such lovely accents! Cricket Cricket has been taking place in the school for a period of approximately six weeks. Caoilfhionn Rowen has been leading this on behalf of the Leinster Cricket Union/Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. This is free to the school. 5

th and 6

th Classes have been taking part. A team

was selected to take part in the Leprechaun Cup. They beat Killashee National School from Naas in the 1

st round

and lost narrowly to Kill O’The Grange National School in the next. A girls’ only cricket blitz will take place in June. For those interested in progressing in the game, Cabin-teely Cricket Club has been recommended. The club plays in Castle Park School at the moment but hope to move back to Killboggit Park.

SERVICE FOR THE BLESSING OF ANIMALS

Family Service on 10

th May once again welcomed a very well behaved selection of parishioners – our be-

loved pets! Dogs and cats were brought along by their owners for a blessing. Our pets mean so much to us and give us loyalty, love and companionship and it was very fitting that they should be acknowledged for the wonderful gifts they bring to us. The service was compiled by Lily Byrne and was enjoyed by everyone.
