Dairy Science Park team visited Military Farms Okara for technical and business collaboration with KP

A team of Dairy Science Park, University of Agriculture, Peshawar visited the Center Excellence for Bovine Genetics at Okara. The team comprised Prof M Subhan Qureshi Dean FAHVS, Prof Sarzamin Khan Chairman/Chief Technical Advisor DSP, Engr Irfan ul Haq Qureshi President DSP, Dr Hamayun Khan Assistant Professor Theriogenology, Dr Shoaib Sultan Afridi Assistant Professor Nutrition, Dr Rajwali Khan Lecturer Livestock Management, Dr Azmatulallah Khan PhD student theriogenology and Dr Shah Murad Student M Phil Theriogenology. The visit was very kindly allowed by Prof Zahoor Ahmad Swati, Vice Chancellor UA Peshawar and facilitated by Brid Ehtisham, Brig Faheem, Col Mahboob and Col Nemat. Capt Khalid of ET Lab and Capt Mohsin and Dr Shazia of Semen Lab demonstrated various techniques. Centre of Excellence for Bovine Genetics (CEBG), a training and production institute of Remount Veterinary and Farms Corps (RV & FC), was established by RV & FC in collaboration with Planning Commission of Pakistan and Livestock Dairy Development Department (LDDD) as a mega project to improve the genetic potential of livestock at Military Farms cattle herd and national level. A visit was made to the Embryo Transfer Laboratory located at Military Farm Okara. The setup comprises animal sheds and a laboratory complex. Top performing male and female animals are selected among a wide based bovine population located at various stations and utilized for superovulation. The collection is made the adjacent Embryo Transfer Laboratory at about three months interval and embryos are either stored or transferred to the recipients. A fair number of embryos of Holstein Friesian, Brahman (beef) and crossbred cattle are available at the Laboratory. Than the team visited the Semen Production Unit located at Renala Khurd, Okara. The Unit has stationed bulls selected among a larger population of cattle from various stations. The Center has been producing semen, of Holstein Friesian, Jersey, Sahiwal, Brahman (Beef) and Cholistani cattle. Being summer, a cooling system was in function keeping the animals in a comfortable state. The elite semen and embryo available at CEBG, from cattle with a milk yield of up to 14000 per lactation for dairy cows and a daily weight gain of above 1000 g for beef animals were recommended for supply to the local farmers and practitioners under the Park in addition to the training courses, at appropriate rates. The DS Park team offered collaborative research programs for introducing techniques like marker assisted selection, identify animals of better genetic worth regarding milky yield, disease resistance and fertility traits in their earlier part of life. DSP team for overcoming the issues in superovulation, embryo development and handling. The CEBG team was invited to the third workshop scheduled for November 16-20, 2015; which the CEBG team accepted with thanks.

Minister Local Government KP agreed on establishing Dairy Science Park Board Minister Local Government and Rural Development, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr Inayatulalh Khan agreed in principle, with establishment of the Dairy Science Park Board and directed the Director General Local Council, Election and Rural Development to initiate a summary for approval of the Chief Minster. The decision was made pursuant to a presentation made by Prof Muhammad Subhan Qureshi, Dean AH and Vet Sciences, the University of Agriculture Peshawar. The presentation was attended by Mr Javed Khattak Provincial Chief SMEDA, Mr Abdul Hafeez SMEDA, Mr Adil Siddique DG LGE&RD, Mr Saleem Khan Secretary Local Council Board, Mr Sajjad LGE&RD, Prof Umer Sadique, Chairman Animal Health UAP, Dr Nayla Imtiaz, Associate Professor Poultry Science, Mr Asim Ijaz, Lecturer UAP, Engr Irfan ul Haq Qureshi Chief Executive DSP Display Center, Mr Zafar Hussain Paracha, Dairy Life Cattle Feed, Mr Saeed, Munir and Co and other representative of public and private sector. Mr Tahir Khattak Architect EA Consulting Pvt Ltd presented the proposed design of the slaughter house. Prof Qureshi informed the participants that the Consultant has initiated work on establishing slaughter house approved under the ADP 2015-16. A meeting was held by the University experts with the Consultant and a work plan was agreed upon to be completed under the project. A summary was submitted for approval of the honorable Minister through the Vice Chancellor UAP. A meet Technology Center will be established at UA Peshawar for providing technical and HRD support to the slaughter house. Work plan of the Park was split into four portions. Establishment of Quality Control Laboratory Complex, Business Incubation Center, Business Facilitation Centers and Halal Research and Legislation Center. Dairy Science Park Act 2015 was suggested for overcoming the legal barriers faced by the stakeholders and the consumers. The Minister appreciated the efforts and the following decisions were made:

The current ADP project will be completed to establish a state of the Art Slaughter House through coordination with the University experts and will be replicated in other districts of the province in a phase wise manner. The land proposed for construction of the Slaughter House was not acceptable being too small and available in pieces; hence a committee comprising the CMO Mr Saleem Khan, Mr Saeed Khan Munir and Co, Mr Asim Ijaz and Mr Muhammad Tahir Khattak was assigned the task. Mr Adil Siddique DG LGE&RD was assigned duties as Focal Point Dairy Science Park who will keep liaison with Prof Muhammad Subhan Qureshi for implementation of the plan. They will immediately initiate a summary, before 22-5-2015 for approval of the Chief Minister, regarding funding the Park worth Rs.500 million and approval of the Draft Dairy Science Park Act through relevant bodies.

Holding Third International Workshop on Dairy Science Park approved by the Vice

Chancellor

The acting Vice Chancellor, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar approved holding of the

Third International Workshop on Dairy Science Park on November 16-18, 2015 at the University.

The approval was given in a meeting attended by the Conference Chair/Dean Prof M Subhan

Qureshi, Conference Secretary General Prof Umer Sadique, Director P&D Mr Rizwan Ahmad,

Director Finance Mr Nematullah, Prof Sarzamin Khan, Dr Hamayun Khan. Abstracts will be

invited for oral and poster presentation during the conference. An exhibition will be arranged

during the conference for display of products and services by various private industries, farmers’

groups, development and government organizations.
