Entrovation was an extraordinary experience for the marketing class, led by Mr. Greg Perry, that gave students a real life business opportunity. Semifinalists were selected from more than 4,000 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of the President to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The BHS Academic Challenge team won the National Small School Championship in the National History Bowl in April. More than 130 varsity level teams from across the country competed. Pictured from the left are Chandler Kitson, BHS science teacher Mr. Steve Arvidson, Ryan Reilly, Jay Rajan, and Jodi Shapiro. A “small school” is any non-magnet, non-selective public school with fewer than 1,000 students in grades 9-12. Topics cover a wide range of areas, including traditional history, historically important scientific discoveries, artworks, musical compositions, and works of literature. In a separate event, junior Ryan Reilly finished 21st out of nearly 200 seniors and juniors competing at the National History Bee. Congratulations to the seventh and eighth graders in the Beachwood Middle School orchestra that won two first-place awards at Cedar Point Music Festival. Performing in the competitive class, the orchestra earned the two trophies for its “superior” score and for the highest orchestra score of the event in all classes, including high schools and middle schools. Bison Cheerleaders Win National Title The Bison varsity cheerleaders finished first in the Advanced Non-Mount Varsity Cheerleading division at the US Finals in Virginia Beach in April. The team earned a trophy, along with medals and coveted white jackets presented to each of the national champions. Beachwood was one of more than 720 teams from around the country. The Bison cheerleaders included Kendyl Kennon, Haley Bogomolny, Hannah Richardson, Annie Adelman, Chinea Lowe, Angeliza Rivera Torres, Anielle Barden Dancy, Emily Einhorn, Lindsey Fishman, Mariah Thomas, Nylauna Petty and Alexis Rudd. Colleen Schachtel and Kayla Bevis are the squad’s coaches. BHS Junior Wins More Film Awards Maria Alvarez cleaned up the awards at the iMagine Film Festival at Hathaway Brown School in April. She won best overall film, 1st and 2nd place drama, and 1st place miscellaneous film category. Last Fall, Maria was named the winner of the Best High School Experimental Film category, at the International Student Film Festival Hollywood in Hollywood, Calif. BHS technology teacher Mr. Kevin Houchins was named one of the PBS’s 100 Learning Media Digital Innovators. He is one of just five educators from Ohio to receive this national recognition. Mr. Houchins teaches television and film production at Beachwood High School. Elementary students and their parents spent hours after school last month making decorations, then assembled them on teachers’ classroom doors during the weekend so that teachers would be surprised when they arrived at school on Monday, May 12. Thanks to the Beachwood Elementary PTO for organizing this terrific Teacher Appreciation Week project. The Beachwood community thanks all of the school staff who share in educating and caring for our community’s children! Communities with supportive, creative parents and dedicated, caring teachers produce exceptional students!
