South Fork/Creede, Colorado Rock Hunt
Seventeen members of Midland Gem and Mineral Society were
in attendance for the South Fork/Creede, Colorado 7-day Rock
Hunt, running from Sunday, June 3 to Saturday, June 9. Hunt-
ing rocks in beautiful Colorado was great fun and there were
also some outstanding cook-outs shared by the members. The
viewing of Colorado scenery and the wildlife was awesome! The
Rio Grande River was filled to the banks because of the snow
which was still melting and was visible all over the tops of the
mountains. Bobbie Hutson, Cynthia Gallagher’s mother &
Jerry Gallagher's mother-in-law, was a perfect guide and
showed us all the super places to hunt rocks. She is a real char-
acter, a fun person to be around, and her love of rocks and rock
hunting was very apparent!
Some of the places where rocks were found: Aqua Ramon,
where chalcedony, pyramid-shaped crystals & chert were
found, Cactus Hill & Twin Mountains, where agate, barite, ge-
odes, thunder eggs and more chalcedony & crystals were found,
and the Pool Table, where red jasper, chalcedony & agate were
found. Some large yard rocks were also gathered.
A visit to the Last Chance Mine outside of Creede, Colorado
was an interesting side trip. The owner of the mine, Jack Mor-
ris, entertained the members with an interesting story of the
history of the mine and how he was able to become the owner.
(You can read about this historic mine, how Jack Morris be-
came the present owner/caretaker, and what he is doing with
it– not only for rockhounds, but also for educating the public–
by going to www.lastchancemine.com/). Some terrific rocks and
minerals were purchased there.
The movie set of “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp as
Tonto, was set up at the end of the main street in Creede, and
blocked one of the really good places to hunt rocks. (No, we did-
n’t get to see Johnny Depp, either).
All the people who were able to attend would like to say a big
“THANK YOU” to Jerry & Cynthia Gallagher and Bobbie
Hutson for all they did to make the 2012 Colorado Rock Hunt a
great success! —Anna Richardson, MGMS Rock Hunt Field Trip Chair
WANT TO SEE WHAT THEY COLLECTED? HEAR SOME OF
THEIR STORIES? ATTEND THE JUNE 28 MEETING!

it continues to grow to the amount we presently have.

endowment fund need to check “Other” on the special do-

President Winchester then turned the floor over to Schol-
arship Committee Co-Chairs Linda Bryant and Mary Tel-
linghuisen. They introduced the two 2012 MGMS Schol-

Committee Co-Chair, Bill Halepeska, reported that the
Show Committee is meeting monthly and invites all
of our members to send suggestions for our 50th an-
niversary show by phone, snail mail or e-mail to him
[email protected] or to Tom
Wurster [email protected]. For
Show & Tell, Andrew Kerr brought some of the ma-
terial that he and his sons found on a rock hunt at
Woodward Ranch near Alpine for identification. The
members present thanked Love SwimmingBear,
Ellen Adan, Karol Mayo, Jerry Gallagher, Mary Tel-
linghuisen and Sharon Winchester for bringing re-
freshments. After the refreshment break, Dr. Andrew
Kerr led the members and guests into the planetar-
ium’s theater and presented the program, “Dawn of
the Space Age,” followed by “The Night Sky over
Midland.” After a question and answer session the
meeting was adjourned.
