Preston Queen’s Jubilee Fun Run - Monday 4th June 2012
Today we went to a race. It was a mile fun run it was at Moor Park. We ran half a mile and
turned round and came back. My favourite part was getting a medal. I beat mummy and Mike.
After I played on the park. I saw a squirrel climbing a tree and I knelt down to see if it would
come to me but it didn't. After that I was cold and mummy put her jumper on me and I felt
better. I then went and watched my mummy race and cheered her on.

Preston Jubilee 5K - Monday 4th June 2012
I entered this race as it was over the Jubilee weekend and seeing as Jessica and I were not
joining in any street parties or local fetes I decided to look for something to do as I couldn’t
send Jessica to school without having done some activity for the Jubilee so this was the best I
could come up with.
The race was a bit of a trek for a 5K as it was opposite Preston North End Football Club at
Moor Park. It was a bargain to enter at only £2.50 for the fun run and £5.00 for the 5K with
the added bonus of a medal for both the fun run and 5K finishers so I entered both!!
Registration in the football stadium was pretty straight forward, going to the toilet, however,
was not!
I had asked the security guard about directions to the ladies and he gave me a full escort as
the bathroom was in the heart of the football club (next to the director’s box) and we got a
little tour of the ground. Jessica and I visited the ladies and whilst there I made a couple of
phone calls to my parents so they could wish us both luck. What I didn’t know was that the
security guard was waiting outside to guide me back to the registration area and looked thor-
oughly unimpressed waiting for Jessica and I to materialise.
Jessica did her mile fun run first with Mike and I running along-side as chaperones and she
did fantastic, dragging us two old biddies along with her, then it was a quick stretch and time
for me to race.
The race itself was billed as a fun run. The course itself was really nice going through Moor
Park. It was pretty flat for most of it, running on the park pathways with plenty of supporters
out on the course. It then loops back on itself with a small sharp uphill and a slight incline
towards the end. I felt like I was running really well for the first mile and a bit and then all of
a sudden I lost the ability to breath which is rather important for running. I started to panic
and felt myself slowing down and loads of people started to overtake me. I got a second wind
and saw the 3 mile marker and was pleased to see I went through at 22 minutes exactly. Only
another 160 meters to go and I thought I could break 23 minutes. I began my sprint finish
only for the finish not to materialise for another 400 meters!!!! As you know I am a stickler
for accurately measured courses and this one came in at 3.25 miles and finished in 23:47
which I was really disappointed with. On the plus side, Jessica had a great time and really
enjoyed her run and was made up with her Jubilee medal and the fuss that was made over her
at the end by the organisers.

Dovestones Diamond Trail Race - Wednesday 23rd May 2012
BEING 50
Yesterday was something of a milestone for me .... being 50! This means a move up to age group
MV50...... ouch, that’s hard to take but I’m trying to be positive making this a new starting point in my
athletic career. This means forgetting all previous bests and forgetting how quickly I used to be able to
run when I was 25, with the possibility of winning some age group prizes.
So the new start begins the next day with the Dovestone Diamond 10k Trail race. This is a local race
for me starting from the village of Greenfield in Saddleworth. The race is organized by jolly Kiwi Ja-
son Chapman (who some of you may know from the Sweatshop in Hyde) and is located adjacent to the
infamous Saddleworth Moor. The race route takes in a circuit of the Dovestone Reservoir, popular
with climbers, walkers, mountain bikers and this evening runners. The evening air was warm and not
too hot, ideal for racing, which probably accounted for the large field (209) of which 109 entered on
the night!
So to the race; the beginning is narrow and a little muddy with shaded tree roots threatening to trip the
unwary. Quickly there is a dead stop with a sharp right turn. The (now) tarmac path gets even narrower
reducing the field to single file and the steepness of this path slows the pace to just above walking.
Fortunately I have ridden the first part of the course and know what to expect. Again there is another
sharp right turn onto a stony dirt track, this time less steep although still doesn’t allow for any overtak-
ing. Soon there is a switch back to the left and the path flattens out a little. A dark wooded area hides
rutted hollows which is difficult underfoot and the path is peppered with deep puddles. This terrain
continues for about half a mile and demands full concentration. At last, the path opens up and overtak-
ing becomes easier and I manage to get past the traffic jam. At the far point of the course you (as Jason
put it at the race brief) just turn and burn! He wasn’t kidding either as the return stretch is very fast. At
the last gate there was a surprise steep grassy descent for 50 metres which is followed by an eyeballs
out final one and a half kilometres to the finish on a private tarmac road. At the 9 km sign there were
three of us together. In recent times I would not have been not bothered about the finish, but now hav-
ing moved up an age group every place counts, and places could mean prizes. 500 metres to go and I
start to pick up the pace just on the shoulder of the guy in front, but in the final charge I just can’t beat
him. Well I haven’t felt that good with that buzz at the end of a race for ages, even though I was pipped
at the post ( for 41st place, just in case you thought I was at the front of the race). As I catch my breath
and try not to be sick I look up and see two women runners chatting as if they had just turned up to
watch, and several balding and grey haired men sipping drinks, whaaaaaat I thought this was going to
be easier, I thought I could win my age group, I thought I was running really fast. It is amazing that
men and women of a certain age are still fit, healthy and running faster than me (but I’m not bitter....
he lies). So I guess it’s back to hard training, revisiting my old times and trying to run again like a 25
year old.
This is definitely one for your 2013 race calendar, but make sure to see the first half mile of the course
prior to the start, and start near the front. In all a great race, ample parking, well organised, food at the
end, stunning location and a £5 Sweatshop voucher!!

Abersoch 10K - Saturday 9th June 2012
Kath and I did this race last year in 26 degrees,
so we were happy to see the cloudy skies and
slight drizzle on the morning of the race. After
watching Peter and Ken tuck into a full English
we set off, just making the start.
It’s a really lovely beginning to the race, start-
ing at the centre of the village; giving it a great
atmosphere.
This was continued throughout the course with
plenty of people cheering us along.
Abersoch has incredible scenery and it is well
worth doing the run for that alone. There is a holiday atmosphere as you make your way
around the course, passing camp sites and holiday homes; with both locals and holiday mak-
ers offering their support.
The shale track hill at 3 miles is horrible and the beach finish is a killer; so no chance of a PB
here. It's a good challenging race though with a good mix of abilities. The Welsh hills are
fairly challenging but the stunning views over Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia coupled with the
atmosphere takes your mind off it.
The beach finish was really good but it’s impossible to finish with a sprint; the commentator
however thought differently, with loads of enthusiasm and encouragement for everyone.
Anyone fancying a weekend away and a Saturday morning race, this is one to add to your
calendar for next year.
You receive a goody bag including a t-shirt and medal; both really nice.
The first man back was Ben Fish 30.01.
The first woman back was Jane Evans 35.13.
Abersoch Lifeboat crew member Rick Cotter finished in 1.48. He ran (walked) with a 9
stone weight on his back. He was amazing; he was really struggling early on but still kept
going to the finish and received great support.
Celebrations continue into the evening with
everyone meeting later in the afternoon for
presentations, drinks and partying into late
evening. Great people and great atmos-
phere..... very enjoyable

Morecambe 10K - Sunday 10th June 2012
Not having done this race for about 8 years and being a man who always
likes to show a girl a good time, I suggested to my wife, Christine, that we
combine my doing the race with a weekend away, not in Morecambe, but
in nearby Lancaster. When she had got over her excitement we booked
somewhere we had stayed before and off we set.
Saturday in Lancaster was rather wet and grim but we had a good time
looking up old haunts from when we used to visit our eldest daughter at
university there.
As I was complaining about various aches and pains, chief of which were a sore achilles and
a sore right backside, we went into a chemists to look for some Ibuprofen gel. Christine man-
aged to spot some product I had never heard of, called 'Dynamint', which sounded like a cross
between something you clean the drains out with and a tube of toothpaste! Even better it was
half the price of Ibuprufen so I bought some and took it back to the hotel to administer.
Sunday morning dawned bright and early and amazingly the weather had cleared and it was
hot and sunny. I had a light breakfast, leaving Christine to get full value as always, and while
she prepared to go in the hotel gym and pool, I set off for Morecambe and the race. By this
time I was well addicted to the soothing feel of Dynamint on my aches and pains so I arrived
at the start smelling like a peppermint cream!
The race started near the newly refurbished and very elegant Art Nouveau style Midland Ho-
tel, right on the prom and not far from the Eric Morecambe statue. The first 2 miles were
along the prom to Heysham and the views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland fells were
a fantastic distraction from my aches and pains. Also, the Dynamint seemed to be kicking in
and I felt quite relaxed. After 2 miles, the race then turned off the prom up a hill into Hey-
sham village, still a quaint spot, despite the nuclear power station and container depot that
overshadows it!. After running up a steep incline near the power station we then turned inland
and ran down to the main road leading back to Morecambe. While this bit isn't very scenic, it
wasn't long before we turned back on to the prom at the spot that we first left it, leading to a
lovely bracing run in to the finish line near the Midland Hotel. With the benefit of chip timing
I was able to record an accurate time which wasn't brilliant but not bad in the circumstances ,
though like all runners, I can always blame some niggles for not achieving my desired time.
After that it was back to the hotel in Lancaster to join Christine for a quick jacuzzi ( as Eric
Morecambe might have cracked, 'they can't touch you for it') a stroll along the canal and back
home.
All in all a nice friendly and scenic race, a good weekend and I've discovered the joys of
Dynamint!.

Three Sisters 5K Trail Race - Wednesday 15th June 2012
Having the magical word ‘trail’ in the title was enough to rouse my interest. The allure of
mud and puddles is too much of a pull for a Wednesday evening.
Julie W and Julie H came to collect me from home and we headed off down the East Lancs.
Getting to the venue was easy enough, finding the registration place a bit more difficult as we
headed off in the opposite direction. Realising our mistake and being sensible to ask the mar-
shals we were soon heading in the right direction and found where we should be. They had
run out of application forms so we ended up filling in the form for the Swinton race instead,
at least they weren’t wasted there.
Finding the other Swinton runners, Rebecca was pleased to see some more ladies which
meant we had a ladies team.
The route consisted of two smalls laps along the road to the entrance turning sharp left into
the wood which was slightly undulating then circling around a small lake. After this we
turned right and headed off for a larger lap which took the runners around the outskirts of the
race circuit before heading back past the entrance down the road and into the finish.
Being optimistic that there would be mud I had changed into my trails shoes which weren’t
needed and road shoes would have been more appropriate. Even with the trails being dryer
than I prefer I still enjoyed the race and was amused when Emma text me and knew I’d have
enjoyed it as Mike H had hated it.
The race was won by Anthony Valentine from Bolton Harriers in an amazing time of 16mins
15secs. First in for Swinton was Darren in 18mins 17secs with Rebecca being first Swinton
lady home in 23mins 21secs closely followed by Julie H 2 seconds later.
Well done to all Swinton runners who ran in this
new race. Let’s see if we can have a bigger
Swinton presence in next years.

Horwich 5 - Wednesday 20th June 2012
It was Sharen’s turn to drive so I was kindly picked up from home. When we arrived I was
quite surprised to see how quiet it seemed from the last race. Sharen explained that race 1 is
part of the Grand Prix so generates more runners and the next three races would be a lot qui-
eter.
We met up with the team and did some pre race warm ups. It was a really pleasant and warm
evening and in my mind I was thinking I have got to do this hill again and could I get a better
result this time.
Wishing everyone good luck we all set off and straight from the start I just put my head down
and tried to focus on my run. At the half way mark I could hear Lucas, Patrick & Jess cheer-
ing me on and as I passed them I heard Lucas say go mother which made me smile and think
cheeky monkey. Heading towards the hill I thought this is it, once I am up this hill I can
check my watch to check my timing. I thought at the time that I was running a slightly better
race than last month’s. Running to the finish I could hear the crowd cheering so loud it urged
me to do a sprint finish.
Carly was the first Swinton lady home and we waited for the rest of the team to finish. Next
up came Emma & Rebecca running down together with big smiles on their faces. Then Steve,
then the trio of Swinton came in with big cheers from the team Sharen, Carol & Dave. It was
a great sight and made you proud to be part of Swinton Running Club.
The race was over and babysitting duties was passed back over to Emma & I. Back at home I
was delighted to hear that I had won a bottle of wine for being the 3rd vet but seeing the re-
sults I think it was a mistake as Carly was classed as being 65 years old! It also looks that I
didn’t run as well as the previous month. Will need to try harder for race 3.
A big well done to everyone
who ran this race especially to
Mark & Carly for being the
first Swintoners home.
An extra big thank you to Ad-
am & Lauren for looking after
Lucas & Jess while Emma
and I had the chance to run.

Platt Fields 10K - Sunday 24th June 2012
It was Charles De Gaulle who once said, ' Apres moi le deluge' and I reckon he must have
been in Platt Fields park the night before this race. I've done this race many times as it's flat,
cheap and I must admit rather boring ( three times round Platt Fields is not the most imagina-
tion stirring venue)! Nevertheless it is part of the Manchester Parks series and I like to tick
off as many as I can.
The normal tarmac and shale paths however were transformed this year by the deluge of the
previous two days, leading to what I can only describe as a very challenging run.
Setting off on lap one we immediately encountered the first water obstacle- a lake about six
inches deep and about 30 yards long which had lodged itself on the path and which there was
no way round. As the ground echoed to the sound of squelchy trainers, I soon discovered that
this was the first of many similar pools we had to wade through and then repeat the experi-
ence three times!
By the time we came to the last lap and rounded the boating lake, I think I had more water in
my shoes than there was in the lake. At least this was an excuse for my time of 53 minutes 13
seconds which was 2 minutes slower than last year. Still, yet another experience to add to my
years of running, but next time I think I'll take my flippers as a precaution!

Fleetwood Sotos 10K - Sunday 24th June 2012
A blustery and wet Sunday morning in Fleetwood: Mike, Louise, Liz and myself were stand-
ing at the start with lots of athletic looking club runners.
We three beginners felt a bit out of our depth but, “Too late to worry!” Off we went! It was a
nice, flat course and I was running well, covering the first 3 miles in 27 minutes. At the first
water point, we found a gap in our training as we discovered we couldn’t drink from a cup
and run at the same time. Then it was on to the sea wall for the return leg and, with the wind
in our faces, we struggled a bit. There would have been nice views of the Lakeland fells
across the vast expanse of Morecambe Bay, but grey, rain laden skies put a stop to that. We
turned off the sea wall and crossed the boating lake into the final straight to cross the line in
about an hour. We were rewarded with a day-glow t-shirt and matching banana!
It was a nice flat course and could have had PB potential, had it not been for the wind and
rain.

Trail Wales Half Marathon - Saturday 23rd June 2012
After spotting and signing up for the Trail Wales Half Marathon on the Internet, the constant
updates via the website, Facebook and emails made this event sound better and better, but
after running the event they were wrong it surpassed all expectations.
This race is the hardest race I have run to-date, It included everything that a trail race should
and more. Climbs to rival those in the Marsden 10K, Rivington, and Trooper Lane.
Descents to match the White Peak Marathon - Steep muddy trails that would put any Cross
Country Course to shame including Woodbank Park.
Earlier in the week I decided rather than travel to Wales early on the race morning, I would
camp on the Friday and found a camp site just a mile or so up the road from Coed y Brenin
forest where the race was to be held. This sounded like a good plan but as the week pro-
gressed, the rain increased day by day and it was looking more and more like a bad move .
I left work early on the Friday in the pouring rain, wondering if I was going to be spending
the night in the car sheltering from the rain. However, as I entered Wales the weather im-
proved with blue sky's ahead. After a detour into Bala for a quick toilet break the SatNav
then decided to make me travel the last 12 miles over, what seemed like, the loneliest hilly
single track road in Wales, with no phone signal and having to stop every few miles to open
and close gates.
I went straight to the registration office which was housed in the Coed y Brenin
Visitor Centre, this part of Wales is famous it’s Mountain Bike Trails, and quite a
lot of them start and finish at the centre.
At the registration I received my number, a t-shirt, and a pair of Salomon trail
socks, with the promise of more goodies in the morning after the race.
I then drove to the campsite with still no sign of the rain, but the wind was now picking up,
leaving me hoping that the tent would stay up. The people at the campsite, which is also a
working farm, were very friendly telling me I could leave my tent pitched the next morning,
and come back and shower after the race.
Tent pitched, I had some tea in the kitchen and spoke to some of the other campers all of
whom were running the next morning. I managed to get a good nights sleep even with the
noise of wind. Up early next morning, a quick bowl of cereal and I left for the race.
The marshals kept the traffic moving on forest roads and in the car parks and I was soon
parked up and making my way to the start to try and meet up with Karen and Andrew some
friends of ours from Pudsey Pacers. Karen was running the full marathon rather than the Half
and like myself and Lauren had run the Marsden 10 a few weeks before.
I quickly found them and had a good catch-up whilst waiting for the Marathon to start at 9:00
- the Half was to start at 9:30. At this point the midges came out in force and I had beat a re-
treat to the car to liberally spray myself with anti-midge spray.
Back at the start of the Half, the race organiser told us all about the course mentioning all the
name of the trails we would soon be running on, “The Beast”, “The Dragons Back” and “The
Volcano trail” to name a few, each one conjuring visions of bigger and bigger hills.

Trail Wales Half Marathon - Saturday 23rd June 2012
The race was started by the Gamekeeper of the forest with is 12bore Shotgun, a very apt
choice.
The start of the race was very much like Rivington, up a steep track followed by a nice de-
cent. Unlike Rivington I managed to run all this section of the race. The race then followed a
series of forest trails, most of which were quite wide and not too muddy considering the
amount of rain the area had the previous few days.
The views of the Mountains of Snowdonia and the forests were breath-taking and took my
mind off the hills that came thick and fast, The steeper one I had to walk as usual.
The fellow runners were super, having our names on the numbers helped as people were call-
ing out to each other, asking if they were OK and generally having a good chatter.
At around 7 miles we came to a great technical part of the race, a long decent along a muddy
single track path weaving in and out of the Fir trees, I was really enjoying this part of the
race. However for every good part there is always a bad part, this being a very steep trek up
the other side of the valley, everyone around me was walking this part, as there was a steep
drop off to one side to a fast flowing waterfall ( Even Lauren could not miss the Waterfalls on
this race).
The water stations on the race were well manned and all had a selection of water, energy
drinks and slices of banana along with some gel stops too. The marshals and mountain rescue
teams’ support was super and could not be faulted.
The last part of the race, included the “Sting in the Tail” that the race organiser had men-
tioned at the start of the race, and what a sting it was! A long steep climb that seemed to go
on for miles. It was along this stretch that the leader of the Marathon passed me running up
the hill as if was not there.
The last mile was a slight climb, then a long decent to the finish, At the finish I received my
goody bag of a wooden coaster, water bottle and a piece of flapjack - that did not last long.
The time on the Garmin was 2:48 and showing a distance of 13.9 Miles. My slowest time for
a Half, but who cares on a course like this.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this race to any person that likes trail racing. It’s hard,
maybe too hard in places, but you come away thinking that you have accomplished some-
thing.
There is already a provisional date for next years race June 22nd/23rd, but entries will go live
initially for 2012 entrants only.

This was set up to try and encourage competition between club members at all levels and
to be sure of a good turnouts at events in the area: seeing Swinton runners competing at
events throughout the field is the best advertisement for the Club.
For this year 2012 will see a slight change to the championship:
For the men there are 13 events of which 7 races will score.
For the ladies there are 14 events of which 7 races will score.
Scoring is done the same has in the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, 1 point for first, 2
points for second, 3 points for third etc. etc. etc.
Prizes will be awarded for the first 3, and also in each of the vet categories. Only one prize
per member.
To be eligible for prizes, competitors must have taken part in the minimum number of
events (now 7 races for both sexes)

Christmas Party 2012
We're starting to think about arranging the Running Club’s Christmas Party already.
The proposed venue is Rendezvous in Astley and we're looking at Friday 30th November.
The cost would be £29.95 per person
which includes a 3 course dinner and disco.
There is Cross Country race (Wythenshawe Park) the next day, but running round a muddy f ield is a proven hangover cure so that's
no excuse!
For now could people let us know if they'd be interested so we can get an idea of numbers.
Can you please email [email protected] or speak to Rebecca at the Club if you are interested

Swinton Running Club is proud of its friendliness and welcomes newcomers to come down and meet us for a run, to see if we meet your expectations.
We meet at 7:30pm on Mondays and Wednesday at Swinton Moorside Cricket Club.
The club can provide you with the opportunity to train and compete at whatever level you choose. We are affiliated with England Athletics for Road, Fell and Cross Country
running. We have members from fun runners up to International level - all enjoying taking part in a sport that provides the chance for everyone to find the event that suits
them best. We regularly compete in local races at all age and ability lev-
els. Some members just come down to the club to run and don't want to enter races,
but prefer to train with like minded people and enjoy the social side of being with a club.
