AGM A successful AGM was recently held, AGM report and list of Directors and Officers to follow in the next Newsletter. APRÈS TIPS Gearing up for the 2011 Ski Season – Try the following exercise to get yourself ready…. Follow these simple exercises to ensure you are in tippy top shape to enjoy the après activities available at the Smiggins & Jindabyne Lodges. Stand with feet apart. Raise your right hand and draw it across your body and up towards your left ear. Wait one second and then smoothly extend your arm forward quickly in a straight line tilting slightly downwards. Repeat. Lean forward slightly. Straighten your left arm out, raise it 45 degrees and point slightly to the left until fully extended with fingers slanting down and thumb pointing horizontally to the right. Take your right arm back behind your body and bend your elbow. Now smoothly move your right arm backwards and forwards keeping the left arm still. Repeat several times. Cup your right hand. Hold your left hand approx. 30cms above your right. Have your left thumb and index finger almost touching and then rotate your hand right to left. Repeat as often as needed. This exercise may need to be adjusted if a cork is involved. By getting in and practicing early you will definitely be in contention for World Championship ping-pong, snooker and wine tasting. Note: These exercises can be reversed for left- handed competitors. EVENTS IN SNOWY MOUNTAINS Upcoming events in the Snowy Mountains include: 2-3 July Liberty Skis Demo Days 9-10 July Salomon/Atomic Demo Days Playstation Night Slopestyle Series 23 July / 20 August / 17 September – up to $40,000.00 in Cash and Prizes – Check Perisher website. Ride The Coca-Cola Tube My Ride is back for a third season! Grab a camera and maybe a mate to film you (or film yourself if you want to). Skiers and boarders are invited to take on the PlayStation Slopestyle course on Front Valley. The twist is that your runs (can be multiple runs pieced together) are to be captured on film and edited into a slick video of no more than 3 minutes with a Coca-Cola sign or logo in the clip (this is a must). You don’t have to nail the perfect run or runs on film, or be the best park rider in the world; you just need to put together a slick vid cut to selected Launch Your Band Music! You don't have to film your entry on the weekend on 30-31 July, but that's when Coke signage will be set up. www.perisher.com.au/tubemyride

WORK PARTIES – C’MON SKIERS, C’MON, C’MON…. The weekend before the long weekend (4th-5th June) saw a bevy of workers head down to the Snowy Mountains to prepare both your Lodges for the coming Winter. We sincerely thank George and Helen Gaucci, Dianne Elliot, David and Sally Bartley, David Boyd, Laurie and Jill Ward, Sebastian Marsden, Jonathan Marsden, Coletta Hobbs, Andrew Waugh as well as prospective new Members Mary and Andrew MacDonald. At Smiggins Lodge just about every piece of timber in the Lodge including bunks, downstairs foyer area, staircase and bathroom doors had two coats of Estapol. The main dining table also received a couple of coats and you can now see your own reflection in the finish. New broom heads were fixed to newly painted grate outside the front door. The Club’s new water blaster gave the outside and tiled areas inside a really good clean. Gudrun and Juergen fed the workers lunch and then set to the task of ordering all the food and other essentials ready for you all to arrive. Back at Jindabyne a new area was landscaped with more work to be done over the next month. Before and after photos to follow in another Newsletter. Everyone stayed at the Jindabyne Lodge on the Saturday night and our very dedicated and hard working Jindabyne Manager and Booking Officer, Christine Hornig, cooked up a storm to satisfy the hoards. A little birdie advised the News desk that the afore mentioned après ski exercise was practiced aplenty in the evenings…hmmmm !

Notice of future work parties will be advertised in next Newsletter, please consider organizing a few friends to assist with the TLC of your Club’s Lodges.

Please contact [email protected] Gavin Boyd 0431 496 721 to advise of your wish to be involved. And don’t forget about the NEW INITIATIVE !! The Board would like to invite all Members to consider organizing their own Work Party weekend. The criteria is really very simple:

• Pick a weekend or two days mid-week (Oct-May non peak times), that is compatible with your diary. • Encourage a couple of mates, Members or Non-Members to join you. • Ring Gavin Boyd (0431 496 721) to check that your chosen weekend is compatible to a working bee. • A list of handyman and cleaning chores will be allocated to your group. • Petrol for 1 vehicle per 4 persons will be re-imbursed, with receipts. • Accommodation for two nights will be free of charge. • $25 per person will be provided towards meals over the 2 day period.

So now is the time to check your diaries and allocate some dates to give something back to your Club.

MEMBER NEWS # 1 – JEALOUS – ARE WE? Club Members Michael and Adam Moate recently travelled afar to Alaska to experience the thrills of Heli Skiing in the 49th state of the USA. In Michael’s words… ‘We travelled to the Chugach Mountains and stayed in a resort called Alyeska, which is in a sleepy town, Girdwood, about one hours drive from Anchorage. The Heli Skiing Company was The Chugach Powder Guides, Epic Quest Adventures. The resort has black diamonds all over it making it very challenging. There is a Gondola from the main hotel and as it practically leaves from the foyer you do not have to go outside to ride it. There are also seven chairlifts but no T-Bars. The scenery is unimaginable! This place has mountains, not hills so take your A game with you and train hard before you go. We did about 8 or 9 runs all day; it can be very tiring if you are not fit. The helicopter ride over the mountains is absolutely spectacular on it’s own. At one point when we landed, all I could see out my side of the window (which was a bit of a floor window as well) was a drop off the edge of a cliff! I have no idea how far down it was but it was a long way! Luckily we hopped out the other side of the helicopter! We had to do avalanche training before we went in case someone got caught-very interesting! The Helicopter rotated back and forth between three groups all day between 10am and 4pm, only stopping for lunch. There were 3 groups of skiers and 2 snowboarders and you can see the lines we made in this picture. Like all skiing holidays if there is not much snow it can be the worst place you’ve ever been: a bit like a surfing holiday without any waves. However, you can see from the photos, the resort, the people, the food and ski gear (buy in Anchorage) were all fantastic!

REMINDER Please take the time to review the Lodge rules and guidelines on the website which apply to both Lodges (where applicable) and in particular please make sure that any guests whom you sign in to use the Club’s accommodation facilities at either Lodge are made aware of the etiquette guidelines before they commence their stay. TAKE NOTE: On Sunday 12th June the fire alarm went off at the Jindabyne Lodge in the morning after everyone had left for the day. On-site Club Member, Andrew Waugh, found a heatbag boiled dry in a saucepan on the stove with very toxic fumes and the potential for major fire damage. Please remember to turn all appliances, stoves, heaters as well as lights and music off before heading out for the day or on retiring for the night. MEMBER NEWS – KEEP ‘EM COMING !
