HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

Brian Legg of 2551 Marshland Rd,

Apalachin, has obtained the rank of

Eagle Scout. Brian is with Troop 37 of

Owego based out of St Paul’s Episco-

pal Church. His Eagle Scout project

consisted of building 5 sets of bleach-

ers for Waterman Center's Marshland

Road River Park in Apalachin and for

Brick Pond in Owego. The two sites

lacked seating for events.

Brian would like to thank the Apala-

chin Lions Club, Aaron Gowan and

employees at Owego Home Central,

Owego Rotary Club, Owego Elks

Club, Owego Lions Club, Owego Ki-

wanis Club, and his fellow Troop 37

scouts and Scoutmaster Kevin Cumm,

Dan Cumm, Phil Wiles, and David

Geller for their donations, help, and

guidance for this project.

Brian, son of Jack and Susan Legg,

is a senior at Owego Free Academy

where he also participates in Concert

Band, National Honor Society, and

Golf Team. Brian will be attending

SUNY Delhi this fall and major in

Nearly 90 Years of Being … “Like Family”

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Campville volunteers were out most of

the night during the flash flooding on

April 28 to help keep the community

safe on the flooding roads. Most of the

roads in the area were monitored and

reported to the proper authorities. There

was a driver rescued from his vehicle in

front of Tioga Gardens and Route 17C

was closed from Visions Credit Union to

Valley View Drive due to flooding.

Thank you for the community coopera-

tion we received and because of great

team efforts we had no causalities or

injuries. We also ask that you the public

understand that Campville has a policy

and we do not pump out basements due

to the liability involved. Due to the se-

vere road damage at the Hickories most

of the community events scheduled have

been moved to different areas. The Wa-

ter Rescue Operations Course that was

scheduled for April 30 & May 1 was

postponed due to the dangerous condi-

tions of the river from the flooding.

TRAINING

This month our members were instructed

on the operations of the ladder truck.

Our young members were properly

geared and assisted by experienced

members in climbing the ladder and

safety precautions. It is important to

have members trained on all of the appa-

ratus and since our ladder truck is one of

the “first in” all members need to know

how it operates. We had a “team” train-

ing night which enforced the trust of

working with each other while on calls

and working together to get a job done.

Thanks to our Captain Pat Mercer for an

uplifting training. Squad night was

shared with other departments as Guthrie

Air came in and did an LZ class. It was

attended by 51 area firefighters, includ-

ing 24 of our members, and everyone

said the class was great. The pilot and

medic were professional, gave an excel-

lent presentation and answered all ques-

tions. Unfortunately the copter was

called a few minutes before it was sup-

pose to land but we have a promise they

will return with their new copter, the

Astar in the near future.

June brings many celebrations including

graduations, vacations, barbeques, etc.

Let’s think water safety, driving safely,

and staying hydrated in the hot humid

weather.

Happy Father’s Day to all

What do Puppy Pals, Healthy Habits,

Brave Wolf (a visitor from the past),

Literacy Centers of Tomorrow, multi-

media investigations and percussion

instruments all have in common? These

and other dynamic projects will all bene-

fit kids in Tioga County. Much-needed

reading and writing intervention, kitchen

skills, and other vital life skills will be

addressed through unique and fun activi-

ties made possible by the combination of

OA Foundation grants funded by the

generosity of our community and the

initiative of the caring teachers and

counselors who design and implement

these programs. In total, 14 grants were

awarded by the Owego Apalachin Foun-

dation for Excellence in Education in

April.

In 1997, the OA Foundation was es-

tablished as a community wide, inde-

pendent, not-for-profit organization.

The Foundation’s mission is to enhance

the education of the students within the

Owego Apalachin District boundaries,

public and non-public, by providing

private funding and stimulating commu-

nity support for innovative and challeng-

ing programs. Including this year’s

grants, nearly $90,000 has been reinvest-

ed in our community via the money

raised by the Foundation’s Wine & Beer

Night—all annual events. For more

Just Keep Believing Foundation

The Just Keep Believing Foundation

began in 2008 after Owego Free Acade-

my student and athlete Jessica Burrell

sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury

in a car crash. Burrell, now 20, a com-

munity volunteer and a sophomore at

Ithaca College, remains partially para-

lyzed.

The foundation will hold its fourth

annual softball tournament June 11 and

launch a volleyball tournament June 9

and 10 to raise money for organizations

aiming to find a cure for spinal cord

injuries, as well as to help Burrell with

her ongoing medical expenses. Sponsor-

ships are available at $500, $250 and

$100 levels.

The tournaments will take place at

Owego Free Academy, 1 Sheldon Guile

Blvd in Owego. The opening round of

the volleyball tourney’s high school

division will begin at 3 p.m. on June 9 at

a cost of $50 per team or selling 10 raf-

fle tickets; and 5 p.m. on June 10 for the

adult co-ed division, at a cost of $100

per team or selling 20 raffle tickets. All

players will receive JKB backpacks and

the chance to win prizes.

The softball tourney is divided into

two divisions, men and co-ed, beginning

at 8 a.m. on June 11, with all players

receiving JKB Tourney gifts and chanc-

es to win first, second or third-place

prizes. The cost for an adult team is

$250 or can be waived if the team sells

50 JKB raffle tickets.

Beginning at 11 a.m. on June 11,

three local bands will be playing during

the softball tournament. OFA’s Making

the Band, Adri Young accompanied by

Kyle Schreiner, and Hover will be per-

forming. Food, raffle tickets, JKB mem-

orabilia, and chances to win several gift

baskets will be available throughout the

day at the JKB concession stand.

Keep Believing Facebook group page or

Senator Tom Libous, Lourdes Presi-

dent/CEO David Patak and YES! Safe

Choices for Kids were joined by local

parents, teachers and school administra-

tors to honor more than 540 Broome,

Tioga and Chenango YES! LEADers at

the YES! LEADers Change Lives

Recognition Reception.

YES! LEADers are middle and high

school students who, after a day of

hands-on training, present to local ele-

mentary school students about the dan-

gers of substance abuse, the importance

of self-esteem and its role in making

healthy choices as they grow up.

“YES! LEADers continue to be great

role models in our communities,” said

Sen. Libous. “Through their actions,

they’re showing students how to make

healthy choices which will ultimately

lead them down the path of success.”

Senator Libous also announced the

winners of the Jill Kavanagh Memorial

YES! LEADS Scholarships. Ashley

Jones, a Maine-Endwell High School

senior, received a $1,500 scholarship.

Maria Vitovsky, a Susquehanna Valley

High School senior, received a $750

scholarship. Vinnie Buttice, a Bain-

bridge-Guilford High School senior,

received a $250 scholarship. These three

students were chosen based upon their

contributions to their school’s YES!

LEADS program and commitment to a

substance-free lifestyle.

“Not only have Ashley, Maria and

Vinnie been committed to living a drug-

free life, but they’ve also dedicated

countless hours to helping younger stu-

dents learn how to make smart choices

in their own lives,” said David Patak.

YES! Safe Choices for Kids, a part-

nership between Senator Libous and

Lourdes Hospital, is now in its 22nd

year. Since 1989, more than 8,000

YES! LEADers have helped teach more

than 100,000 elementary school students

about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Owego-Apalachin, Tioga Central, and

Waverly school districts participate in

the YES! LEADs program. Their

LEADers have served as role models for

hundreds of Tioga County elementary

school children this school year. For

more information about YES! and YES!

LEADS, visit www.YesSafeChoices.org

YES! HONOR HUNDREDS OF LOCAL

Senator Tom Libous and Lourdes Hospital President/CEO David Patak recognize the YES! LEADers from Tioga Central High School for their dedication to educating elementary students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

BUSINESS NEWS

The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting and Open House on May 12 for Coughlin & Gerhart LLP, celebrating their newly renovated offices at 27-29 Lake Street in Owego. Later that day, Emma Sedore, Tioga County Historian, gave a presentation on the his-tory of the building.

On May 18, the Tioga County Cham-

ber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cut-

ting for the Riverview Manor Health

Care Plaza, 530 Fifth Avenue in Owego.

There was also an Open House for the

community to view the new Health Care

Plaza. Riverview Manor Health Care

Plaza provides In-Patient Rehabilitation,

Out-Patient Rehabilitation, Pediatric

Rehabilitation, Adult Day Health Care.

Riverview Manor Health Care Plaza

Ribbon Cutting and Open House

I have followed the Owego Apala-

chin Central School District as they de-

veloped their 2011-2012 budget. This is

the budget you voted YES or NO on

May 17. This budget when passed will

raise the cost to educate the children in

the OACSD to over $18,000.00 per stu-

dent. I think this is rather expensive

when you compare this to the cost of

private schools in our community or

communities of Syracuse or Albany.

This is $18K for every kindergartner

through Senior or K - 12 as it's referred

to in the Education community. When

you and I went to school we called it

Elementary School and High School.

The private schools perform the same

job for less then $10,000.00 per student.

Elementary Schools are typically

$2500.00 to $4500.00 per year and High

School is anywhere from $6500.00 to

$8500.00 per year. What's wrong with

this picture? What's wrong? These costs

are way out of line and going higher.

They will continue to go higher unless

you, me, we (the folks who pay the tax-

es) tell them to stop. To do this we must

step in and put a stop to the TAX

CREEP. The present administration and

Board believes that a 2% to 4% tax in-

crease each year is what you expect! The

present administration and Board believe

it is what you will accept! The present

administration and Board believe it is

the norm! REALLY! At 2% a year, for

10 years, you will see a 22% increase in

your tax rate. How much has your pen-

sion gone up in the last 10 years? How

about your salary? Are you tired of the

TAX CREEP? If you are, come join

Citizens Against Tax Creep and togeth-

er, perhaps, we can do something to

slow down the TAX CREEP or stop it

altogether. Send an e-mail to

[email protected] or call 607-972-

6881. It will cost you nothing but your

time.

"Little Shop of Horrors"

to Rock Ti-Ahwaga Stage

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players

will present the cult-classic rock musical

comedy "Little Shop of Horrors" May

27, 28, 29, June 3, 4, 5, and June 10, 11,

12 at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts

Center, 42 Delphine St., Owego, NY.

"Little Shop of Horrors" is about a

down-and-out, skid-row, floral assistant,

Seymour Krelborn, who becomes an

overnight sensation when he discovers

an exotic plant with a craving for fresh

blood. Seymour desperately attempts to

keep Audrey II fed to maintain his fame

and improve his chances of winning the

affection of his beloved co-worker

Audrey.

With a mix of 60's rock, doo-wop

and Motown music and a 50's sci-fi and

horror movie theme created by compos-

er Alan Menken and writer Howard

Ashman, this play is pure entertainment.

Add to that the amazing Audrey II,

shown to grow with a series of four dif-

ferent sized puppets that become so

large the final version fills the flower

shop, you have a fun show for the whole

family and a vision you don't want to

miss.

Joe Brainard plays the hapless but

lovable Seymour, and Lisa Scanlon

plays the ditzy, bleached blond Audrey.

If you only go for the songs, you won't

be disappointed. Joe and Lisa's rendi-

tions are jaw-dropping. They are backed

up by a talented cast and a five-piece

band conducted by Chris Weber.

Paula Bacorn, Shanika Bridges and

Tina Salasny play the street urchins who

comment on the action taking place dur-

ing the show through song and dance,

all of which is choreographed by Brian

Flynn and directed by Shawn L. Yetter.

"The production will stay true to the

1960’s B-grade horror film genre that

the musical was derived from. A love

story at its zaniest. The comic book feel

of the set creates a fun scenario for the

real and lovable characters to tell their

story. The show allows for a fun family

night of theater—unless your youngsters

are frightened by man-eating plants,"

Yetter said with a smile.

Shows start at 8:00 p.m. on Friday

and Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sun-

day. General admission is $20. Friday

admission for students with ID cards is

$10. Sunday admission for seniors 60

and over is $17. Fine wines, beers, soft

drinks and snacks are available to enjoy

at your table during the show, and there

isn't a bad seat in the house.

The show is underwritten in part by

Mountainview Mobile Home Park,

Pumpelly House Estate, and Levene,

Gouldin & Thompson. To reserve seats,

call the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts

Center at 687-2130 and log on to

www.tiahwaga.com for more infor-

mation about the center.

Lisa Scanlon as Audrey, a young Audrey II, and Joe Brainard as Sey-mour on the set of "Little Shop of Horrors," which opens May 27 at the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center in Owego.
