Beach Body Boot Camp Proves a success
MCRD Fitness Center is pleased to announce the amazing success of our recent Beach Body Boot Camp Class. Over 90 patrons registered in late March to begin six weeks of intense cardio and strength training
The goal for each patron varied from losing a few inch-es and pounds to just sticking to an exercise program. Sessions were held three days a week in the mornings and evenings. Throughout the 6 weeks, participants were able to experience all of the many fitness classes that are offered on a regular basis at the Fitness Center.
From rhythmic Zumba to cardio kickboxing, every class challenged the participants to run a little farther, kick a little harder and give a little more towards their goal. The results were remarkable.
Every single participant lost weight or inches and in some cases both.
Since the class was such a success, the Fitness Center plans to possibly continue the 0900 and 1645 sessions throughout the summer months. For more information, contact the PI Fitness Center at 228-1579. The ses-sions will now be called Summer Shape Up. Since each class is different, patrons will never know what to expect until they show up.
“We are so excited to see the success of the Beach Body Boot Camp but more importantly we are able to help these men and women reach their goals” stated the Fitness Manager, Alicia Harris. The next Fitness Challenge will start in September to help patrons shape and tone for the Marine Corps Ball.

tricare Fee Increase
Tricare beneficiaries will not be asked to accept fee increases in their military health care benefits unless lawmakers believe the Defense Department has exhausted all other cost-cutting measures, said a key senator whose support the Pentagon will need if increases in fees, co-payments and deductibles are ever to become law. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R0SC), senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee’s military personnel panel, said 24 MAR that he believes Tricare fees — unchanged since 1995 — probably need to increase as part of an effort to control health care costs. “I do not see how we can do this forever,” Graham said of the long¬standing freeze on Tricare fees. At the same time, Graham said, increases cannot be made lightly. “I want to be fair to those who served,” Graham said. The 2011 defense budget does not ask for increases in Tricare fees, but Defense Secretary Robert Gates has warned lawmakers that rising costs threaten to squeeze funding for other defense programs such as weapons modernization.
Health Care reform
The Tricare Affirmation Act (H.R.4887), aimed at protecting people in the military health care program from being penalized for not having private insurance, was signed into law 26 APR by President Obama. The new law provides a specific exemption for Tricare beneficiaries and for nonappropriated-fund civilian employees of the Defense Department from a requirement of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that will require people without minimal health cover to either buy private insurance or face a $750 penalty. Tricare health insurance is specifically defined by the law signed Monday as minimal essential coverage, which provides an exemption from the penalty. Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), the
House Armed Services Committee chairm said his committee will consider legislation in May that would extend to Tricare beneficiaries one of the provisions of the new health reform law that allows unmarried children to remain covered by a parent’s insurance until age 26.
Proposed Bill ensures tricare dependents Coverage Until Age 26
National health care reform has a key new benefit for families that will not apply to military families enrolled in the Tricare health insurance program. A key expansion of benefits in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, H.. 3590, is a requirement for health insurers to cover unmarried children up to the age of 26 who are carried on the policy of a parent. This change, like the rest of the bill, does not apply to Tricare, according to Defense Department and congressional sources. But congressional aides, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said several lawmakers have begun investigating how to alter Tricare so that it also covers older children who do not have their own coverage. Tricare health benefits for older children would not be free to their parents under a bill introduced in the House to ensure military parents are not left out of a key early benefit of the national health care reform bill. The Tricare Dependent Coverage Extension Act, introduced 24 MAR by Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) requires Tricare to cover unmarried dependents up to the age of 26 if parents have Tricare and ask that their coverage be extended. That mirrors a provision of the broader health care reform law, formally called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Currently, Tricare covers unmarried children up to age 23 if they are full-time college students and up to age 21 if they are not. Heinrich’s bill would limit benefits to unmarried dependents who are 26 or under, ineligible for an employer-provided
health insurance program and reside with the military parent, unless the parent is deployed. But the coverage would not be free; a monthly premium would be charged, with the Defense Department determining the cost.
Medicare enrollment
The Social Security Administration has streamlined the Medicare application process, making it convenient, quick and easy for qualified seniors to apply online for Medicare benefits—even if they’re not ready to retire. You just go to the online Medicare application site at https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/iClaim/rib, read the instructions, gather any information you need, and then fill out the online form. The Social Security Administration estimates that the whole process can take less than 10 minutes or as much as half an hour, but the average time is about 15 minutes. Once your application is submitted electronically that’s usually all there is to it. In most cases, there are no forms to sign and no documentation is required. The Social Security Administration will process your online application, contact you directly if they need more information, and mail your Medicare card when it’s ready. You don’t have to be retired or even planning to retire in the near future to sign up for Medicare benefits.
In order to keep you up on military retiree news, some important articles will be posted on http://mccs-sc.com. Select “Retired Activities” on the top bar; Retiree News is listed in the right column.

This month’s pick: Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross
Pope Joan is the story of Joan of Ingel-heim, who would later become the first and only female pope. Joan was born to a minor Catholic priest and his Saxon wife in the ninth century. After the death of her brother John, she assumes the identity of John Anglicus and joins the monastery of Fulda in Hesse, Germany. Joan becomes a priest, but is forced to flee when she falls ill and her secret is about to be revealed. She travels to Rome, where she becomes the confidant and personal physician of Pope Sergius II.
