This month we salute Graduates and Fathers. My nephew Andre graduated from Licking Heights High School and is an aspiring chef and entrepreneur. My “super woman” sister, earned her teaching certifi-cate with an awesome GPA (we’re some smart chicks) while working, maintaining a home and caring for her five children. I especially want to celebrate my husband Ivory. He is the epitome of a real dad. Not only willing to teach our son, but celebrate his victories and correct him in love when necessary.

Last month as we gathered as a family to pray one morning, Ivory lead Devon into pra yer in a way that was rather ingenious. I had taught Devon the Lord’s Prayer when he was two. Originally, he, an avid fan of “My Friends Tigger and Pooh,” when he got to deliver us from evil, boldy declared, “deliver us from Eor,” who is Christopher Robin’s pessimistic, depressed stuffed don-key. My son would proceed then to pray for all of the characters on Nickelodeon. After two years he just began speeding through it, seeing how fast he could get to the end.

This day we asked Devon to pray in our prayer. Usually he runs upstairs, however he has begunto ask us for “things” now. All kinds of things namely red Chuck Taylors and a PSP. Ivory explained to Devon that prayer to God was as easy as aking Daddy for those chucks or that PSP. He explained that we can have everything we want or need by asking God. This little boys face lit up and he went to praying for the toys

he wanted and said “Amen.” Ivory and I continued in prayer and Devon interuppted and said I forgot something and went back to praying. Afterward he blessed all of our family, his grandparents, cousins and all of the kids in Ms. Felicia’s class. There is something about a dad leading his son in prayer and I admire my husband for his influence on our son not only naturally, but spiritually.

Happy Father’s Day. Love Celeste

Partners For Parents is based on the belief that “Though bruised we are not broken; we are stronger than our situation. We are not defined by our circumstance, but by moral principal, divine purpose and the truth of our character.” It’s a simple con-cept of helping others move from one place to another with the intention of making one’s life better in the moments to come, than it would have been a moment ago.

At Partners For Parents we offer clothing to those in need and we receive the items through the kind donations of others. We offer basic mediation for families who need a little guidance in reaching peaceful solu-tions that unifies the home and family. For those who have been out of the work place for a while or for those looking for employment, we sponsor a job readiness program that will help each individual in their search. Our job readiness program has much to offer such as current job open-ing, assistance with building résumés’, grooming techniques and mock interviews to create confidence during the actual interview. We offer GED study groups and after school tutoring and we also are reach-ing out to our U.S. Veteran to see how we can better service them within their social

environment. We have a program called Parent Partners and these individuals are there to assist single young parents with resources and referrals, educational and occupational mobility, environmental and social awareness, as well as other needs and issues.

This all began ten years ago when I received a phone call from a friend who was in need of help. The help she needed was within my realm of possibilities, so I reached out and gave her a hand up. People often ask me why do I try to help folks and what’s in it for me. The reason “why” is because it’s necessary. My reward is being able to help someone who simply asked for it. “To whom much is given, much is required.” My little bit of nothing might be a major contribution to someone else living on less than what I have to offer. I think to myself all the time that I need to be my own primary client, seeing how most of us are just a paycheck away from homeless ourselves. On some days, the difference between me and those I try to help is that I come into an office and I try to figure it out for everybody. I’m the person next door; wife and mother of three, struggling trying to hold it all together. But I believe that we

are perfectly made for our purpose, so I’ve decided not to think below my privilege, act beneath my favor or speak below my authority, but to go get my blessings.

This summer we look forward to servic-ing low income and homeless children by sponsoring a camp program focusing on and addressing the concerns of childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes as well as prevention. It’s our intention to get the children interested in exercising, eating and living healthy. We will also use this opportunity to perform outreach services to the youth and their families. We can’t reach every child in every family, but it’s a start. If you are interested in having your child attend, please call us at 781-9432 or come by our office on Saturday between the hours of 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM to reg-ister.

God has found favor in me in spite of myself. In the words of the song writer; “He saw the best in me, when everyone else saw the worst in me…..He saw….The Best!” You better believe it’s not over, not for me and not for you. God has a plan; it’s already been done; stand still and watch God work it out for you.

Spring is graduation season for millions of students. What are the aspirations of today’s teenagers as they think about their future? A new research study from the Barna Group examined a representative, nationwide sample of 602 teenag-ers, asking them to describe what they think their life will be like roughly 10 years from now, when they are young adults. To help teens respond with a specific time horizon in mind, the survey asked them what they believe their lives will be like when they are 25-years-old.

College and CareerThe most common aspirations of

teenagers were related to college and their professional pursuits. Finishing a college

degree was their top-rated future priority. A majority of teenagers felt certain that they would accomplish this goal by age 25. In all, 93% of teenagers said they would either def-initely or probably obtain a college degree by their mid-twenties. In terms of career,

81% of teenagers felt they are likely to have a “great-paying job” by the time they are 25. Displaying their we-want-it-all perspective, 80% of teens also believed they would be serving in a “job where they can make a difference” by that age.

God and GlobalHaving a connection with

God and international travel emerged as second-level priori-ties. Nearly three-quarters of teenagers felt they would have a

close, personal relationship with God (72%) in the next decade or so. About seven out of 10 youths (71%) said they will definitely or

Ask the Church Lady

Dear Church Lady, I recently visited a church and I really enjoyed myself the people were nice the Choir was very good and the holy spirit moved throughout the building and I want to join my only concern is that the Pastor did 15 years in Prison now how can I trust a man who has been locked up to guide me in my spiritual path. Signed, Set Free Dear Set Free, Jesus, Peter, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Malcom X , Nelson Madela just some of the people I know who have been locked up and I would trust them to teach me just because a person makes a mistake in life does not mean they cannot change and become who God wants them to become, now you said

the Holy spirit moved throughout the ser-vice well if GOD can be apart of that min-istry so can you ..my advice go into into Prayer and ask God to guide you in your decision, just do not hold it against the Pas-tor that he made a mistake in Life. SmoochesChurch Lady Dear Church Lady,What would you do if you knew that a friend of yours was having a affair with a Deacon at your Church, I am so upset about this because if I say something I am either gonna ruin a Friendship or I am gonna ruin a Marraige, I feel really uncom-fortable knowing this information, please help me ! Signed,Upset in Dayton

Dear Upset,Pull your trifling Friend to the side and ask her what means more Him or the Friend-ship explain to her the predicment she has placed you in and ask her to stop, if she refuses the nyou know where you stand with her becasue if she will pick her lust over your sanity that is not a friend, and tell him that you know also and tell him that he needs to stop his actions becasue it is not conductive to him being a man of God and you do not want to go to the Pastor over his actions. I am gonna be in prayer for you because I know that you are in the middle of a very hurtful situation but God can and will turn this around.Love,Church lady

As a “born-again” athlete we have to always remember that our strength comes from our level of faith, and we must recognize the source of our strength and the deliverer of our talent. As athletes we gain our reputation and popularity from our

performance, yet many fail to give glory to God who enables them to perform. Saved? Unsaved? When did you thirst? As a Christian Athlete one of your earthly responsibilities is to become

a Spiritual Mentor for the unsaved players on your team. For many , this is an area of natural hesitation. As a Christian athlete you must “answer the call”, to bring unforeseen blessings through victories and defeats. You have teammates who would like to become a

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (BP)--Brazilian Baptists plan to share a Christian witness at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johan-nesburg, South Africa.

For 20 days, 200 Brazilian volunteers working with the 2010 African Connec-tion Project will conduct outreach activities among soccer enthusiasts at the tournament,

which runs from June 11 to July 11.The Brazilian Baptist Convention’s

World Mission Board is organizing the proj-ect as part of its volunteer program to send Brazilians overseas on short-term missions trips.

Brazilian Baptist pastor Marcos Grava, coordinator of the initiative, noted, “The 2010 African Connection Project is one of the big-gest volunteer projects in the history of the missionary church in Brazil.”

The goal is to bless the people of South Africa with the Gospel message, Grava said. “We ask prayers for local security, volunteers’ security and many fruits among the South Africans and tourists,” he said.

Some of the planned outreach includes praying and doing personal evangelism in front of stadiums, conducting arts and sports clinics with spectators and providing a health clinic for poor communities in Johannesburg. The Brazilian volunteers will travel to Johan-nesburg in two groups: the first from June 3-20, the second from June 6-22.

Grava said he is particularly interested in the opportunity to reach out to players from countries that are traditionally closed to the Gospel along with supporters of those teams.

Grava also hopes to prepare a number of

Brazil’s soccer team, which will be competing in the upcoming World Cup games in Johannesburg, and the crowds of Brazilian fans accompanying the team to South Africa, will be a key focus of outreach by 200 volunteers sent by Brazilian Baptist Con-vention’s World Mission Board.

Black Pearl Enterprises is pleased to announce that Psalmist Doris Stokes, was nominated for the 2010 I Hear Music Gospel “People’s Choice Awards” in SIX (6) Catego-ries and WON IN ALL SIX NOMINATING CATEGORIES on this past Friday night’s awards ceremony (May 28th) at the Aronoff Theater in Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio! This is the first year for the awards which was presented at the annual I Hear Music Confer-ence by founders Bobby & Tracey Artis.

“Praise & Worship…Unleashed!” the first solo project offering by Ms. Stokes which was released as an Independent effort on her own label nationally (1 Voice Music) in January 2009 and has garnered high praise from radio and industry professionals alike;

with a dynamic selection of songs of which she penned about half of the CD’s 15 tracks. “Friday evening’s awards was nothing less than MIRACULOUS and AWESOME for me! I’ve never experienced the presence of God on my life in that manner before…I was totally taken off guard by this honor. It’s all very overwhelming to take in. However, just to be recognized and appreciated for what I do for the Father, BY the Father is actually why I continue in the Call that is on my life. Just knowing that He’s pleased with my work is reward enough…honestly.” says Doris.

Doris and the CD project “Praise & Wor-ship Unleashed” were nominated and WON in the following categories:

*Song of the Year (Calypso Praise STRIKE!) • which features Elder Carnell Murrell*Female Artist of the Year• *Praise & Worship CD of the Year (Praise • & Worship Unleashed!)*Vocal CD of the Year (Praise & Worship • Unleashed!)*Producer of the Year (which she shares • with Minister Keith Leak)*Artist of the Year•

Doris not only served as one of the song-writers on her Freshman solo project, but also held Producer & Executive Producer respon-sibilities along with her Husband & Manager, 30 year plus music industry veteran, Bruce Knight. “Doris’ hands were in every area of the planning process of this project as she’s a PRO and a stickler for being presented with excellence….especially if her name is going to be on it!”…says Bruce Knight. The CD was produced by herself and long-time friend, Minister Keith Leak, who is also a native Daytonian now residing in the St. Louis, MO area. “Keith is blessed in the art and ministry of music production and worship…what a gift he carries. I was so glad we were finally able to find an avenue that we could work together on in our adulthood. I love him and his wife Keeley very much and am glad to call them “friends” says Doris.

So after this, what’s in store for Psalmist Doris Stokes? “Whatever He wants will be fine with me…I’m learning to not box God in nor to try and pre-supposed what He will do because He will continue to FLOOR YOU everytime…LOL!”

Psalmist Doris Stokes Sweeps the ‘I Hear Music Gospel People’s Choice Awards’ with Six WINS!

On the heels of her breakthrough single “Turn Your Pressure into Praise,” Lucinda Moore is back with her new CD, Blessed, Broken & Given (Tyscot Records). Her new CD is a testimony of how Moore has shined bright in spite of her bruises of the past. Lucinda Moore uses the pain of her past to craft fifteen songs to not only please ears, but to also heal souls. The first single “Blessed, Broken & Given” is building momentum at

various radio formats. “This is my testimony of what God did for me,” Moore says of the inspiring ballad. “He’s blessed me with a voice but He had to break some things in me in order for me to be given to the nation.”

First of all let me say “You Go Girl.” I absolutely loved every song on this album. Lucinda’s bold, crisp, sassy, sanctified style not only is entertaining but edifying to the soul. The CD has a pleasant mix of uplifting praise songs and intense worship.

The title track Blessed, Broken and Given ministers to the inner core of who we are as believers and our willingness to endure the breaking process so that we can be blessed.

One of my personal favorites is “There is a River” it took me right into the presence of the Lord. I wanted to get on my face and just worship.

I loved the fact that she added some

contemporary praise and worship “Days of Elijah” and a traditional spin with “Fire Baptized.”

The tracks include: We Celebrate The Cross We Praise Your Name Fruit Of My Lips There’s A River Bishop’s Prayer I Need Thee Speak Lord Great In Zion Days Of Elijah Let The Praises Flow Breakthrough Shout Blessed, Broken & Given Blessed, Broken & Given (Reprise) Fire Baptized Medley (Traditional) Never Be The Same

Visist tyscot.com or lucindamoore, ciom for more information about the CD and the live DVD recording that will be sold separately.

While consulting with my cousin—Christopher “Doc” Reid—about relationship issues, the conversation shifted to the impor-tance of a father’s active involvement in his daughter’s life. The following interview was created from the novel, The Forbidden Secrets of the Goody Box:Valerie: Doc, the last time we talked you were on a date with your daughters. Why?Doc Reid: In my coaching, I’ve seen a lot of women who are carrying hurt from their childhood into relationships.Valerie: From absent fathers and deadbeat dads?Doc Reid: That and from fathers who don’t teach their girls about men. Having a father in the home is a great thing, but just being there isn’t enough. Most fathers focus on provision for the family and often times overlook their role in nurturing and instruction. A father is a son’s first hero and a daughter’s first love. The hero part comes natural between a man and his son because men thrive on respect. But the love thing; it takes more effort.Valerie: So why don’t fathers teach these things to their daughters?Doc Reid: Most men don’t want to think of their precious daughters as objects of lustful desire and they aren’t comfortable having that type of conversation and a lot of men can’t communicate the emotional component because they aren’t wired that way or just don’t think it’s important.Valerie: Awful. So why don’t mothers prepare their daughters?

Father’s & Daughter: Daddy Dates

Doc Reid: A mother can only teach her daugh-ter as much as she knows. It’s my passion to explain what your father didn’t tell you and your mother didn’t know. That’s why I do what I do with my daughters and use the dates as a means to an end.Valerie: So it’s about more than just quality time?Doc Reid: I’m showing them how a man should treat them on a date. Let’s take Hunter for example. Her would-be suitor will pick her up at home. Blowing his car horn from the driveway won’t do. After conferring with her parents—my wife and I discuss the arrange-ments for the daddy-daughter dates—they leave. He opens the car door for her and then drives to a restaurant where his acts of

chivalry continue. He opens doors, helps her to her seat, makes sure she’s comfortable. Fol-lowing light conversation and the meal, he pays and then drives her home. He escorts her to the front door and at the most, he kisses her on the forehead or cheek. From there, they part ways. No overnight stays or late-night rendezvous.Valerie: So the dates are training sessions.Doc Reid: My commitment to fatherhood is to show my girls who they are and fill their emotional love tank. If Hunter knows that she is motivated by words of affirmation and I have poured into her, then she won’t be smitten by every joker who comes along with good game. As long as she knows that’s her button, she won’t respond out of emotion

when he pushes it.Valerie: Hunter is eight and Kennedy is four; so other than the dates, how do you teach them about relationships?Doc Reid: I use age-appropriate visuals to address the emotional aspect of relationships.Valerie: By all means, expound.Doc Reid: Once I used a pitcher of water, an empty glass and food coloring to explain how daddy loves them. I rattled off a few things that I do to show them that I love them; each time adding a little more water to the glass. Then I asked them what things Daddy does to make them feel loved. When Hunter said that our weekly dates make her happy, I added water. Kennedy said that our evening prayers are important to her; I added more water. By the time we finished talking about all the things I do that lets them know Daddy loves them, the water was spilling onto the table. Since the glass was full—symbolic of their love tank—there wasn’t room for anyone to add to it.Valerie: So where does the food coloring come in?Doc Reid: I wanted to emphasize how other things will be presented that will taint the purity of the water. I added several colors of food coloring, created a dark concoction and offered it to them to drink. Of course they didn’t drink it.

(NAPSI)-The number of American grill own-ers who have grilled a pizza has nearly dou-bled in the past year, the 21st annual Weber Grill Watch Survey shows. In addition, 32 percent of American grill owners say they are using grilling accessories, such as pizza stones, more now than in the past.

“It’s no surprise that more people are grilling pizza at home,” says outdoor grilling expert Jamie Purviance, author of the New York Times best-selling cookbook “Weber’s Way to Grill.” “Kids can help roll out the dough and choose toppings, and parents get to work the grill. It’s a great way for everyone in the family to get involved and create a tasty meal together.”

Busy families can look for pizza dough in the refrigerated section of a grocery store. Those who like to make homemade dough should plan on a half-hour to prep and approxi-mately two hours for the dough to rise. When it comes to toppings, mozzarella cheese, pep-peroni, mushrooms and sausage are the most popular choices among pizza grillers--but the options are endless.

Here are six tips for grilling the perfect pizza from Chef Pur-viance:

1. A grill pan is a handy tool for grilling small pizza toppings, such as chopped mushrooms and bell pepper slices. For garlic lovers, Purviance suggests roasting the garlic in a sealed foil pouch over indirect heat until the cloves are soft and beginning to brown.

2. Pizza dough is easy to flatten and stretch out when it is at room temperature. When using refrigerated dough, let it sit out for a few hours so it will warm up and relax.

3. The dough will be even easier to flatten if you use a small amount of olive oil on your hands as you press it into whatever size pizza you want. Finish flattening each piece of dough on a sheet of oiled parchment paper cut a little bit bigger than the dough.

4. The parchment paper will help to hold the

shape of the dough as you carry it to the grill and flip it onto the grate. After a minute or so of grilling, peel off the paper with a pair of tongs and discard.

5. The olive oil will prevent the dough from sticking and promote even browning. When the underside is crisp and toasted, transfer the crusts to a work surface, with the grilled sides facing up.

6. Arrange the toppings of your choice on the toasted sides and continue to grill the pizzas

until the bottoms of the crusts are crisp and the cheese has melted.

Another tip for making pizza on the grill is to use a ceramic pizza stone such as the new Weber Style Pizza Stone. The ceramic helps absorb excess moisture and distributes the heat evenly, for a crisp, perfectly cooked pizza.

For more information about grills and acces-sories or to purchase a copy of the cookbook, visit www.weber.com.

fashion&styleFinding Shopportunities on Seasonal Designer Trends

CALL from page 7 WoRLD CUP from page 7

(NAPSI)-Fashionistas are revamping their wardrobes and stocking up on the season’s must-have designer trends--and many are discovering they can do so without those designer price tags.

With budgets still tight, savvy shoppers are continuing to discover that off-price retail-ers like Marshalls offer fashionable, current-season merchandise at tremendous savings. Here are a few of the top trends:

Get Neutral: Banish those dark winter tones and embrace the softer side of spring with a neutral color palette. Try shoes, handbags, tops and even dresses in pinks, corals, tans and blush hues.

Pretty and Polished: Delicate details including lace, eyelets and ruffles are part of this femi-nine look. Flowing blouses and lightweight tops paired with pencil or tulip skirts make for a great office look. Draped or cascading car-digans are the perfect light layer over a strap-less sundress. Wear a printed kimono with designer denim for a weekend look. Show off your girly side with a tissue-weight tee and a pair of paper bag−style waist shorts.

Utilitarian Chic: Get casual with cargo shorts and capris. Emerge from hibernation with a denim sundress or shirtdress layered with an adorned tank and bright accessories. Embrace the romper, a one-piece in shorts, or capris that are comfortable and versatile. Add a flouncy floral blouse to give the romper a feminine touch. Pair any of these looks with beaded sandals, ankle booties with a bit of cowboy flair or a cross-body messenger-style bag.

Keep it Classic: Mix the new trends with clas-sic pieces like pencil skirts and tiered blouses.

Rocker Chic for Day and Night: Slim-fit leg-gings in denim, a fabric of choice this spring, coupled with a grommet-studded bomber jacket will make a statement at any daytime outing. For a night on the town, slip on a ban-dage dress and a handbag with chain accents in a muted metallic.

In the Swim: The one-piece is back with updates you won’t be able to resist. Look for animal prints with one shoulder strap and hardware detail for an edgy style. Sundresses do double duty as beach cover-ups for that new, colorful tankini. Shopping off-price at Marshalls and snagging trendy buys for up to 60 percent off allows shoppers to get a few designer additions for less. For more informa-tion, visit www.marshallsonline.com.

Brazilian players to present the Gospel to other countries’ players on the field when their teams compete against each other. Jorge “Jorginho” Oliveira, assistant coach for the Brazilian team, knows about and supports the outreach, Grava said. Oliveira is presi-dent of Atletas de Cristo, one of the Christian organizations supporting the African Con-nection Project.

Of the 1,300 Brazilians who applied to participate in the project, only 200 were selected. Each was required to provide a recommendation letter from an evangelical pastor indicating the volunteer’s previous church involvement. The cost of participat-ing in the project is about $2,500, and volun-teers are providing their own funding.

“We have people from different back-grounds and professions,” Grava said.

“We have different skills and gifts in this group.” Ten evangelical denominations are represented among the volunteers, many of whom speak English and Spanish, but some also speak French, Arabic or Korean.

“We hope to work among groups from Mozambique who speak Portuguese like us,” Grava added.

Many World Cup games will be played in South African cities other than Johannes-burg. But before the World Cup draw -- which determines schedules, locations and team groupings for the matches -- project organizers bought a Johannesburg camp-ground from the Baptist Union in South Africa. They made the purchase knowing that two stadiums in Johannesburg will be playing host to World Cup games and Bra-zilian Baptists already have two missionaries

leading churches in that city.A month later, when the World Cup

draw determined the Brazilian team will play its first two matches in Johannesburg, Grava took it as God’s confirmation that they had chosen the right location for the project.

“We are sure that God is blessing this project even before it starts, as we have prayer support from the brothers and sisters here in Brazil,” Grava said.

1. What types of exercise can I do?

Choose continuous activity such as walk-ing, swimming, bicycling (indoors or out), ski-ing, aerobic dancing or any other activities in which you need to move large muscle groups continuously.

Low-level strengthening exercises may also be beneficial as part of your program. Design your program to use low weights and high repetitions, and avoid heavy lifting.

One simple way to exercise and help many others with CKD is to join a local Kid-ney Walk2. . How often and for how long should I exercise for?

Exercise at least three days a week. These should be non-consecutive days, for example, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Three days a week is the minimum requirement to achieve the benefits of your exercise. Work toward 30-minute sessions. Remember to build up gradually to this level. 3. Can I take part in vigorous physical activity?

Yes. In the past, it was thought that people with kidney disease would not be able to join in vigorous activity. We know now that patients who decide to follow an exercise pro-gram are stronger and have more energy.4. How hard should I work while exercising?

This is the most difficult to talk about without knowing your own exercise capacity. Usually, the following ideas are helpful:

Your breathing should not be so hard • that you cannot talk with someone exercising with you. Try to get an exercise partner such as a family member or a friend. You should feel completely normal • within one hour after exercising. If not, slow down next time. You should not feel so much muscle • soreness that it keeps you from exer-cising the next session.

The intensity should be a “comfortable push” level. Start out slowly each session to warm up, then pick up your pace, then slow down again when you are about to finish. The most important thing is to start slowly and progress gradually, allowing your body to adapt to the increased levels of activity.5. When should I exercise?

Try to schedule your exercise into your normal day. Here are some ideas about when to exercise:

Wait one hour after a large meal• Avoid the very hot times of the day• Morning or evening seems to be the • best time for exercising Do not exercise less than an hour •

before bedtime 6. When should I stop exercising?

You should stop exercising if you feel any of the following:

Very tired• Shortness of breath• Chest pain• Irregular or rapid heart beats• Sick to your stomach• Leg cramps• Dizzy or light-headed•

7. Are there any times when I should not exercise?Yes. You should not exercise without talk-ing with your doctor if any of the follow-ing occurs: You have a fever

You have changed your dialysis • schedule You have changed your medicine • schedule Your physical condition has • changed You have eaten too much• The weather is very hot and humid• You have joint or bone problems • that become worse with exercise

If you stop exercising for any of these reasons, speak to your doctor before begin-ning again.

Top 7 Fitness Exercise Tips for Kidney PatientsRegular exercise improves muscle function, helps control blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and increases quality of sleep. Despite the multiple

benefits, many chronic kidney disease patients do not exercise enough due to concerns regarding what type of exercise they can do, how often they should exercise and how to create a fitness schedule. This month, the National Kidney Foundation answers 7 common fitness questions from CKD patients.

Divine Deck Design

If you’re thinking about adding a new deck, or even replacing or resurfacing an old deck, there are a lot of things to consider before you get started.

Will you entertain frequently? If so, how many people will you need space for?

If your area gets hot, humid summers, putting a deck in a southern or western loca-tion might make it a hot spot you’ll end up avoiding. Is it windy where you live? Then think about putting the deck where it will get some protection from the house or a screen of trees.

What’s your budget? When calculating costs, decide the amenities and features you want such as an arbor, fire pit, multiple deck levels, and type of railing.

How much maintenance are you willing to do? Composite decking is a lower main-tenance option that more homeowners are choosing.

When it comes to the design stage, a new online tool can make it very easy. Fiberon, one of the leading manufacturers of composite decking, railing and fencing and PVC outdoor flooring, offers a Deck Design tool that allows you to select the shape and size of your deck,

including the number of levels, stairs, railings — even board widths and footings. You can print out your deck plans in full color, includ-ing a 3-D rendering and a complete materials list.

probably have traveled to other countries by their mid-twenties.

Family and ChurchMarriage and church involvement

were on the third tier of aspirations. Most American teenagers expect to be engaged in these traditional institutions (58% and 63%, respectively). However, only a small per-centage felt certain about these outcomes in their own lives: 29% of teenagers felt they would definitely be “actively involved in a church or faith community” and just 12% of teenagers felt certain about “being married” by age 25. Teenagers are even less likely to entertain traditional goals regarding parent-ing. Less than half of teenagers (40%) felt they may have children by age 25 and only one out of 11 (9%) said they would definitely become a parent in their early adult years. Of course, considerations of marriage and parenting are dependent on finding a will-ing partner; nonetheless, these pursuits are not top priorities for most students.

Fame versus ServiceMedia are filled with celebrity news and

obscure-turned-famous individuals often made stars via reality television. Given the cultural fascination with fame, perhaps it is not surprising that one-quarter of teenag-ers (26%) said they expect to be “famous or well known” by the time they reach age 25. To their credit, teens are more likely to express the desire to be “regularly serving the poor” (48%) than to be famous, although that priority is less flattering considering that only 7% of teenagers said they would defi-nitely be doing such other-oriented work as a young adult.

Matters of FaithFaith seems to influence what teens

want in their lives. In terms of denomina-tion, students who attend mainline churches were more likely than average to aspire to travel to other countries, while Protestant non-mainline attenders were above average in terms of their spiritual priorities (wanting to be close to God and active in a church). Non-mainline youth were also more likely than the norm to want to regularly serve the poor, yet they also were more interested than their peers in becoming famous.

Strong interest in staying connected with a church was most common among non-mainline teenagers (49%). Only one-quarter of mainline students (25%) and one-fifth of Catholic teens (20%) said they definitely expect their life to include active involvement with a faith community or church by age 25.

Current church attendance appears to be a better predictor of future religious activity than is a teen’s religious affiliation. Among weekly attenders of religious youth groups, 60% said they definitely will be involved in a church in the future, which compares to just 22% of teens who attend less frequently and 14% among teens who never attend such religious functions.

Age and GenderDemographic differences played a sig-

nificant role in teen aspirations. Teen girls were more likely than boys to define priori-ties and objectives. Girls were more likely to picture their lives with nine out of the 10 elements assessed in the study (the excep-tion was being famous, an aspiration equally attractive to both sexes). Young women were twice as likely as young men to want a difference-making job, to be married, to have children, and to regularly serve the poor.

In terms of age, the youngest teens were much more idealistic than older teens in many ways. One of the biggest gaps is their predicted connection to a church: 41% of middle schoolers expect to be actively involved in a congregation, but that drops to 26% of high school freshman and sopho-mores and 24% among juniors and seniors.

High school students were also less likely than middle-schoolers to believe they would have a great-paying job, be married, have kids, be serving the poor, or experience fame by the age of 25. actively involved in a church or faith community

About the ResearchThis report is based upon nationwide survey, conducted

by The Barna Group with random samples of teenagers, ages 13 to 17. The study, known as YouthPollSM, is an annual tracking study, conducted online, using one of the nation’s only nationally representative online panels. The survey was conducted in December 2009 and included interviews with 602 teens. The sample has a maximum margin of sampling error of ±4.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Minimal statistical weighting was used to calibrate the sample to known population percentages in relation to demographic variables.

Mainline churches typically are considered to include the American Baptist Churches in the USA; the episcopal Church; the evangelical Lutheran Church in America; the Presbyterian Church (USA); the United Church of Christ;

What closing advice do you have for fathers as it pertains to their little girls?Doc Reid: If fathers don’t fill that void, then their daughters may use a man, drugs or some other addictive behavior as an attempt to compensate and comfort the emptiness.
