    5th - 6th ROBERT A. SIEGEL AUCTION GALLERIES

  • (New York, NY: Sale No. 957) The sale of ‘The Islander’ Collection of The Rarest and Most Outstanding Stamps of South America. This sale has the potential of being included amongst that group of public philatelic auctions producing the highest prices realized. The legendary Islander collection comprises the rarest and most outstanding stamps from five of the philatelically most significant South American stamp-issuing entities: Brazil, Buenos Aires, Chile, Colombia and Peru. Each area is represented in the sale by its most outstanding philatelic rarity, as well as an array of rare stamps, blocks and covers. From Brazil is offered the legendary ‘Pack Strip’, a unique se-tenant multiple comprising the 30 and 60-Reis values from the second composite plate used to print the 1843 ‘Bull’s Eye’ issue. The Buenos Aires ‘Barquitos’ issue provides the remarkable “In Peso” Tête-Bêche Pair, which experts consider to be the only surviving Tête-Bêche multiple of the issue. For the first time ever, the auction market will have an opportunity to bid on the famous cover bearing the Chile 1854 5-centavos Lithograph Block-of-14, which was acquired by the collector privately more than forty years ago. The FDC of Colombia’s 1st issue is the only First Issue FDC recorded from any country in the Americas, including Canada and the United States. Finally, Peru offers two equally worthy candidates for the top-rated position: the ex-Weinberger block containing the Medio Peso Rose Red se-tenant error, and the spectacular combination cover with the Medio Peso Rose Red error and a pair of the One Dinero Blue first issue. These outstanding items have been shown in Court of Honor and Aristocrats of Philately displays in major international exhibitions for decades, but they rarely appear at auction, and never before have all of them been gathered in one collection at one time.
