barrier matting systems - health & safety

More than 70% of dirt and moisture, such as mud, dust, water, snow and litter, in buildings is tracked in by pedestrian and wheeled traffi c. Using an effective matting system can reduce the amount of dirt and moisture walked into a building by up to 90%.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, 90% of slip accidents in public buildings are caused by wet fl ooring.

The provision of adequate amounts of matting can help prevent moisture being tracked into and around a building and therefore help to reduce such slip accidents.

A reduction in the appearance of internal fl oorcoverings is caused by general damage from the build up of grit that is diffi cult to remove, leading to the early replacement of fl oorcoverings. An effective barrier matting system can improve the appearance of fl oorcoverings and prevent unnecessary replacements.

Several kilograms of dirt and grime can be tracked into a building during the course of a single day and according to the International Sanitary Suppliers Association (ISSA), the cost of removing 1kg of dirt from within a building is estimated to be as high as £700. The cost of maintaining fl oorcoverings through their lifetime is estimated to be 86% of the total cost. Where a barrier matting system is used as part of a planned maintenance programme, this fi gure can be reduced.

See pages 30 - 31 for full details.

An effective barrier matting system should ensure that safety is a priority and all users can easily access the building, meeting the requirements of The Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document M.

See page 33 for full details.

The Gradus SystemMatic approach to matting combines the use of primary barrier matting and secondary barrier carpet in different areas throughout a building to provide an attractive, functional solution, which ensures the effective removal of tracked-in dirt and moisture.

Gradus offers barrier matting systems that can be installed in interior and exterior environments to provide the optimum SystemMatic approach, whilst enhancing the appearance and performance of surrounding floor finishes.

entrances Entrances are prone to heavy soiling and moisture ingress, which should be removed at the access points to a building to increase life expectancy and reduce maintenance costs of the adjacent floorcovering. Combinations of exterior and interior primary matting and secondary barrier carpet can be installed to provide attractive, functional barrier solutions that ensure adequate removal of both tracked in dirt and moisture.

lift lobbiesOften located near to the entrance of a building, lift lobbies are areas within public buildings exposed to high numbers of footfalls. The introduction of secondary barrier carpet will both increase life expectancy and reduce wear and maintenance of surrounding floor finishes.

foyers & reception areasFoyers and reception areas are typically heavily trafficked circulation areas, often located near the entrances to buildings. These areas require hardwearing floorcoverings that are easy to clean and will retain their appearance, in order to ensure that important first impressions are made.

staircasesMany staircases lead straight from the entrance or foyer of a building and are prone to high traffic levels and tracked-in dirt. The wide selection of secondary barrier carpet offered by Gradus provides the specifier with a solution that can be used on a staircase to prolong the life of adjacent floor finishes.

office corridors & walkwaysMain circulation areas, such as corridors and walkways, within busy office environments often endure high and frequent levels of foot and wheeled traffic, including wheelchairs and post trolleys. Secondary barrier carpet provides a durable solution that also helps to prolong the life and appearance of adjoining floorcoverings.

warehousesWarehouses often have many entrances and exits and while it may be impractical to consider secondary barrier carpet at external exits it should be specified when coming from the warehouse into clean areas, e.g. offices.

vending & canteen areas Vending machines and areas such as kitchens and canteens are prone to spillages, and encourage the tracking of dirt and moisture to other parts of the buiding. Gradus provides easy to clean, impervious backed barrier carpet to combat this problem.

service pointsDaily wear and tear of areas behind service counters can lead to poor appearance of floorcoverings. Barrier carpet can provide easily maintained, hardwearing solutions that will retain their visual appearance.

esplanade plus™

for interior and exterior use in heavy traffic environments

Esplanade Plus is a primary barrier mat available in either open or closed construction and in two thicknesses (12mm or 18mm). It is ideal for use in interior or exterior locations subject to heavy foot and trolley traffic e.g. supermarkets, shopping centres and airports.

The mat is constructed using an aluminium base supported by rigid PVC-u bridging strips which provide excellent point loading. Flexible pvc hinges, available in a choice of black, blue or grey, allow for minor undulations in the matwell and provide ease of handling.

The aluminium scrapers are interspaced with either 100% solution-dyed nylon wipers, available in 16 colour options, which are ideal for optimum soil and moisture retention, or a black pvc wiper for scraping off dirt.

Esplanade Plus has been tested with heavily laden trolleys to ensure suitability for use and is tested to a B1 fire rating as standard. Esplanade Plus can be used in conjunction with Boulevard 6000 and Boulevard 5000 to provide a fully co-ordinated barrier matting system (see pages 22-24).

tyreguardfor interior use in heavy traffic environments

Tyreguard is a primary barrier mat, suitable for heavy traffic applications. Available as a closed or open (5mm) construction mat, in two thicknesses (12mm or 18mm) and with single or double wipers. The mat consists of aluminium scrapers and recycled grey rubber wipers that are held together using galvanised steel wires. Entirely manufactured from aeroplane tyres, the grey wipers consist of alternate layers of textile and rubber, making Tyreguard the ideal choice where the use of recycled materials is a key consideration.

To extend the product life cycle, Tyreguard can be reversed where it has been installed as a true rectangle or square and can be manufactured to most shapes, subject to the provision of an approved template.

Tyreguard wipers are made from 100% recycled material.

NOTE:Wipers are made from 100% recycled material from aeroplane tyres, of which at least 50% is vulcanised rubber with the remainder being textile material. Due to the recycled content of the matting, there will be natural inconsistencies in the pile height and shading of the wipers. These variations should become less apparent once the product has been installed for a period of time.

access®

for interior use in everyday traffic environments

Access is an easy to install, primary barrier mat suitable for medium levels of foot and wheeled traffic, e.g. in schools, offices and some high street shops. Due to its non-metallic nature, Access is ideal for use where electronic tagging systems operate.

Access comprises a moulded black or grey rubber base with 100% solution-dyed nylon wipers. The wipers are available in a wide range of colours to complement any design and can be co-ordinated with Boulevard 6000 and Boulevard 5000 for a complete barrier matting system (see pages 22-24).

Access is available in 12mm thickness for recessing into a matwell or surface mounting when used with a suitable ramping strip. Access 17mm is for recessing only. Spacer strips are supplied to provide a neat finish to the mat.

The mats are provided in 0.5m x 2.0m modules and are supplied oversized for shaping and trimming on site. Access is tested for dimensional stability and flammability tested to BS 4790.

ramping frame

recessed frames

RAM012 for use with surface-mounted Access 12mmAvailable in Black and Grey

Gradus offers a wide selection of matting accessories to ensure ease of installation.

Matwell frames and ramping strips provide a smooth and safe transition between a barrier mat and the adjoining floorcovering. This protects the edge of the mat from damage and prevents trip accidents caused by uneven flooring.

A choice of gauges is available to accommodate mat thicknesses of 12mm (recessed and surface-mounted), 18mm and 25mm (recessed only).

Matwell frames and ramping strips are offered either in stock lengths or as made-to-measure kits for individual mat specifications. Gradus’ curving and fabrication capability allows for most mat shapes to be accommodated.

Creates a surface matwell. Mat is loose-laid on top of the floor. note: Ramping frames cannot be curved.

profi les: Dimensions shown are nominal. Illustrations are full size in mm. Products subject to minor design alterations without notice.

surface-mounted mattingA surface-mounted mat is loose-laid to a fi nished fl oor and sits proud of the surrounding fl oorcoverings. Ramping strips are provided to form a safe transition between the mat and the adjoining fl oor (see Figure 3). note: This type of installation should be avoided in areas subject to heavy trolley traffi c. Care must be taken when installing a mat to allow for door clearance.

recessed mattingA recessed mat is installed into a matwell that has been set into an existing fl oor fi nish and fi ts fl ush with the surrounding fl oorcoverings. Matwell frames are used to protect and strengthen the matwell, protect the exposed edge of the fl oorcovering and provide safe transition to the surrounding area. The base of the matwell is screeded to suit the required height of the mat and to provide a fl at, sound surface (see Figures 1 & 2). note: Care must be taken when installing a mat to allow for door clearance.

Clip-Top is a product that allows design flexibility in all commercial situations. Tops are either PVC-u with co-extruded pvc ribs or bronze (not shown). The tops can be replaced so that the colour can be altered as part of a refurbishment programme, or if a worn or damaged section needs to be changed, without renewing the base or disrupting the fitted floorcovering.

Available in a choice of materials and colours to suit most interior design schemes. A selection of Clip-Top products are shown below. For more information see the Gradus Stair Edgings & Floor Trims catalogue. Copies can be requested from Gradus Customer Support on 01625 428922.

survey & specification manufacture

service options

• Prior to selecting a barrier matting system, it is important to survey the building in which the matting is to be located

• Certain questions should be answered in order that the correct mattingisinstalled:

•What is the intended use of the building?

• What is the expected level of foot and trolley traffic entering the building?

• What is the expected level of contamination?

• What areas within the building require matting in addition to the entrance e.g. canteens, lifts etc?

• How will the matting be maintained?

• How often will the mats be replaced?

• Gradus offers a broad range of products to suit all types of requirement

• Specially trained specification consultants can provide face to face advice when specifying matting, ensuring that the product selected is matched to the exact requirements of the building

Details of specification consultants are available from Customer Support on 01625 428922 (UK & Eire only)

• The performance of any area of matting is dependent on how well it is maintained.

• Frequently cleaned matting will remain functional and retain its aesthetic properties for longer

• Gradus is able to recommend a maintenance programme to suit the area of matting within the building, including daily vacuuming, periodic deep cleaning and the use of certain detergents to remove heavy stains, e.g. chewing gum

• The frequency and type of cleaning required will be determined by the level of traffic and the amount of soiling and contaminants being carried into the building

• For further details contact Gradus Technical Services on 01625 428922

cleaning and maintenance guidelines

primary mattingWith primary matting systems such as Esplanade Plus, Access, Esplanade 1500, Topguard or Tyreguard, daily vacuuming should be considered as standard practice using an upright vacuum cleaner. An upright cleaner has the ability to ‘beat and sweep’ the pile and, therefore, remove more dirt and debris from within the fibres of the matting system. Suction only vacuum cleaners should be avoided as these merely provide a surface clean.

Regular cleaning with a water extraction machine is also recommended and the frequency of such cleaning should be determined by the amount of traffic the mat is subjected to.

The construction of the primary mat will also determine the cleaning method to be used. An open construction mat should be removed to allow the matwell to be thoroughly vacuumed, whilst a closed construction mats will require regular vacuuming to remove soil deposits from its surface.

Closed constructionOpen construction

A barrier matting system should be regularly cleaned and maintained, as it is designed to collect dirt and moisture from the feet of pedestrians and the wheels of trolley traffic including pushchairs, service trolleys and wheelchairs etc.

For a matting system to work at optimum efficiency it must be included in the same maintenance regime as the surrounding floorcoverings, which it has been specified to protect.

A planned maintenance programme should be developed in relation to the amount of traffic passing over the matting on a daily basis. The greater the amount of traffic the stricter the regime should be.

Seasonal changes will also have an influence on maintenance. During the winter months the amount and the frequency of maintenance may need to be increased, whereas during the summer months the maintenance level may not need to be so intensive.

secondary barrier carpetSecondary barrier carpet systems require daily vacuuming in most applications. An upright vacuum cleaner should be used, as with primary matting. Regular cleaning with a water extraction machine is also recommended to prevent long-term staining and soil build-up.

When using extraction machines in conjunction with detergents, it is important to ensure that all the detergent has been removed from the pile. Failure to do so will lead to faster soiling due to the sticky detergent residue left in the pile.

specialist cleaningChewing gum should be removed by the use of specialist products such as freezing sprays, gels or specific removal tools. For spillage stains or further general advice contact Gradus Technical Services on 01625 428922.

Most types of matting can be used in a wide variety of locations. Selecting the appropriate matting system is a balance between product performance, life expectancy and cost. The table below provides guidelines based upon each of these factors and should be used as a guide only. For further product selection information contact Gradus Customer Support, to discuss your individual requirements.

types of mattingprimary mattingPrimary matting can be used both internally and externally, is often modular in construction and is usually manufactured from aluminium, brass, PVC-u or rubber with textile wipers. It provides an effective barrier against soil and moisture by retaining wet and dry debris at the point of entry to a building (see Diagram 1). Primary matting can either be open or closed construction.

secondary barrier carpetSecondary barrier carpet is a high performance textile with a scrape-off cleaning function and moisture retention properties. It is often used in conjunction with primary matting to combat residual dirt and moisture (see Diagram 1) and can sometimes be used in certain environments as a stand-alone mat. Secondary barrier carpet is also ideal for use in heavy traffic areas where dirt and moisture build up, e.g. receptions, canteens, around vending machines etc.

open constructionAn open construction mat incorporates spaces, usually between the wiper strips, to allow dirt and moisture to fall through the mat into the matwell below (see Diagram 2). This can be removed by lifting the mat and cleaning out the matwell as well as deep cleaning the mat itself.

closed constructionA closed construction mat has wiper and linking strips that are joined together (see Diagram 3). Dirt and moisture remains on the surface of the mat, held within the fibres and scraper elements. Dirt can be removed by regular cleaning with an upright vacuum, in addition to periodic deep cleaning. The construction of the fibres in the wipers of the mat allows moisture to evaporate. Diagram 2
