WASDA

President’s Message

June 2006

John Gaier

Supt., Neillsville

Let me begin my final article by thanking each and every one of you for allowing me to serve you as the Presidentof WASDA. The opportunity that I have had to meet and get to know all of you has truly been my good fortune.Through this very busy year, I have discovered that I am blessed to be a part of one of the finest professionalorganizations around. In the face of so many challenges, to have a membership that can stay so positive aboutpromoting the health, safety, and welfare of all the children across our state is really humbling.

It is easy to believe that the position of superintendent has evolved and changed a great deal from what it used tobe, and that today’s superintendency is significantly more difficult than it was in the past. But, an article that waswritten by Fred Johnson, the 1982-83 WASDA president from St. Croix Falls, proves that the superintendents ofyesterday faced many of the challenges and problems that the superintendents of today face. More importantly,Fred’s article shows that the same important traits of a successful superintendent years ago are the same importanttraits that we need to be successful superintendents now. Please enjoy Fred’s article and may God bless all of youfor the wonderful work that you do on behalf of children.

WHAT IS A SUPERINTENDENT?

Somewhere between a Masters Degree and three years of teaching experience to a Doctorate and umpteen years ofexperience is a superintendent. They are quite an assortment of people…but all have the same creed: to dedicateevery waking moment to provide the best education for kids.

Superintendents are found everywhere – in offices, cars, meetings, courtrooms, classrooms, boiler rooms, andbathrooms. Families love them, axe grinders hate them, staff members tolerate them, retired people ignore them, spouses wonder when they’ll be home, their children demand their attention, the news media crucifies them, andGod protects them.

Superintendents are truth with a balanced budget in their hands, are intelligent with glasses on, have wisdom whengray hair appears or hair disappears, and show concern when their hemorrhoids act up.

You know it is likely to be a superintendent when you hear a stomach rumble prior to a school board meeting, someone speaks or writes out about the positive things in education, it’s the first person to a mediation/arbitrationsession, grievances appear in both hands, there is a speaker at a retirement dinner, there is a leader in a serviceorganization, someone else is hired to do most things at home because there is no time for “Honey Do” projects.

A superintendent has a lot of characteristics – they have the mind of a tack, a keen sense of direction, twenty-twentyhindsight, can walk on eggs, balance on a tightrope, has the shoulders of Atlas, the skin of an alligator, and a heartthe size of a basketball.

Page 4: JUNE 2006 - MarketingSherpa · June 2006 John Gaier Supt., Neillsville Let me begin my final article by thanking each and every one of you for allowing me to se rve you as the Preside

No one can pack more rest and relaxation into a weekend by mowing grass, washing dishes, windows and cars, playing with children, reading the complete Sunday paper – including the ads, attending some school function, goingto church, grocery shopping, and catching up on the much-needed rest.

A superintendent works 25 hours per day (no lunch hour), can pack 8 hours of sleep into 2 hours by sleeping fast, and takes advanced classes, seminars, conferences, and inservice during their spare time.

A superintendent is a magician. Budgets can be approved, referendums passed – at least after the third try, mostgrievances resolved at the third step, and can maintain their sanity.

Superintendents should be proud. They can take more hell, show more compassion, give more support, back moreprojects, stomach more grief, shuffle more papers, and take on enough work to kill an ordinary person.

The superintendent will continue dedicated, professional work with enthusiasm and energy because sometime, somewhere, somehow, someone is going to say, “Thanks, you made a difference and I appreciate you.”
