DINING DELIGHTS

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS MAXIMIZING HAVING YOUR

VOICE IN MEDICAL EMERGENCY

A special presentation and discussion with Mark B. Peterson, Ed.D.

Monday, June 21 at 10:00 AM at Northampton Campus 2:00 PM at Easthampton Campus

Medical crises and emergencies are always upsetting. The resulting stress can lead to miscommunication and inappro-priate responses. Being prepared can foster a smoother and more effective outcome.

In this 75-90 minute workshop, Mark will identify the five documents which are “must have” and four documents that can make the package more complete for medical personnel. He will also re-view options for packaging them and where they should be located.

A number of handouts will be provided.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are trying to restart the Activity Committee in Easth-ampton and are looking for residents that enjoy planning events, hosting events or just helping arrange trips for all residents. Meetings are held monthly. Please contact Mari-lyn at 413-437-5895 or [email protected]. Thank you.

CANNABIS – THE BENEFITS

AND THE BUSINESS

A presentation with Ezra Parzybok, local author of Cannabis Consulting, Help-ing Patients, Parents and Practitioners Understand Marijuana, Tuesday 6/29, 2:00pm in the Easthampton Mount Tom Room.

In 2016, Massachusetts joined the current list of 17 states where “recreational” or “adult use” marijuana is legal. If you’ve driven anywhere in the valley in the last year you’ve likely seen the discreet store fronts with the oblique names and tinted windows. These dispensaries provide access to a wide variety of strongly regulated products, and add solid tax revenues to an eager state government. While revenue is a driver, interest and consump-tion of this long-maligned plant has become much more mainstream. Driven underground by government efforts in the 20th century, craft growers and

shady operations continued to hybridize, fine tune growing and processing methods, and now bloom forth with a myriad of legal products for a solid marketplace.

Medical marijuana — also called medical cannabis — is a term for the same Cannabis sativa plant that can be used for multiple therapeutic purposes. Massachusetts legalized sale directly to consumers for medical use in 2012. Across the country 36 states now do the same. Important for Lathrop residents is the question: What is medical cannabis and how might it facilitate well being? While there is considerable anecdotal folk knowledge about the benefits of cannabis, scientific re-search lags far behind.

The various strains of Cannabis Sativa contain many active compounds, but two are of interest for medical purposes: THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the primary ingredient in marijuana that makes people "high." Did you know scientists have discovered endog-enous endocannabinoids and their receptors in the brain and other tissues.? Did you know we can increase the number of receptors and the natural levels of the body’s endocannabinoids? Endocan-nabinoids and their receptors play a vital role in regulating pleasure, memory, thinking, concentra-tion, body movement, awareness of time, appetite, pain, sensory processing (taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight), and brain development.

Unlike other medications that have a standard dose and protocol for each person, cannabis dosing is unique to every individual. There is a wide number of cannabis products available and different methods of delivery. Finding the right strains may require some trial and error and assistance. Ez-ra will help shine a light on the history and expanding business reality of the Cannabis market. In addition, he will help look at the opportunity that this now readily available product brings to those curious about how it could add to their self-care. Rob Olmsted will be on hand to connect with folks who have further questions and may want to explore getting a medical license or drop-ping in to shop at the “adult use” counter.
