Hello. I hope you all are doing well and enjoying thebeautiful weather we have been having.

After this past memorial day weekend, I had thepleasure of visiting numerous ceremonies and

parades honoring those US Veterans who have laid their life on the line to protect our

Freedom. I think in total I visited 8 different ceremonies, with 2 of them being in AlabamaWhat amazed me most was the citizens who honestly adore America. They flew the USFlag proudly.

Almost 90% of all the folks I spoke with had or has someone in their family serving inthe US military. The ones who have lived through war, those who patrol our borders andwaters. They are all very important to us living in a FREE nation such as ours. So many ofthe stories they told me ended up with us in tears in our eyes, hugging each other andpraying for a peaceful solution to the world becoming so violent. I wish I had the spacehere to write you of certain stories I was told from a WWII veteran, Vietnam Veterans areeverywhere.

Point is that neither one is less important than any other. They all were doing what we

enlisted to do. Even risk our lives if necessary. Ask yourself this. As of today, how manyof todays youth really understand what fighting for our Freedom means? It is more thanjust shooting the enemy, more than just serving time in a uniform that represents ournation. Ask the children whos parent may be currently serving overseas not knowing ifthey will ever see them again. Can you explain it to them any better?

I, myself served as well as my father, my uncles, my aunt, my great grandfather andthose before him as I was told. The horror stories come to the surface when they recountthose days of war. It is sickening to see the sadness in their eyes as they told of suchevents that changed their souls forever. There is no easy way to tell such a tale withouthave being there to witness such tragedy. Most everyone you know probably has hadfamily who has served in our US military. Talk to those who had.

What I do not understand is why did Obama feel a need to apologize for something we

did out of courage? It was the most important thing we ever did as a Nation to defendwhat is right, to fight evil threatening our way of life. Besides the Facts that we wereunder attack when we dropped the atomic bomb. It was a statement that was made andcompleted by our military. Does anyone think there would have been negotiations that wecould have talked them out of attacking us at Pearl Harbor? We were not warned, we wereinvaded upon with enemy bombs, period. No one seems to imagine how the USA would have been destroyed if Hitler was notstopped. I know most of the youth today probably dont care or even know who Hitler

was, what he was doing and what he had plans to do. How is this much different from theMuslim invasion we are experiencing world-wide? So far the only difference, is that weare under attack but it is more stretched out, isolated incidents as we read about it. After it

has taken place. Then it was too late to defend, just to report it on what took place. Isntthat how we are living today? Just waiting to hear, when, where and how did it happen? Is it because we dont see enemy aircraft dropping bombs on us here in the US that we

dont see the immediate reason to eliminate this threat? Our own Sec. of State (Hillary

Clinton) didnt and still doesnt care about our national security. When will you care? Our political system is so corrupt that we vote in who we think is best for the job and

then they curl up to corporate demands and follow for the money as if that is in our bestinterest, since when? Drug gangs do just that. They dont care if what they peddle in theUS kills you or not, they got paid and went back for to bring more in the US. The amountof drugs alone is killing of so many innocent people that guns are not needed. Some of ourDoctors have been accused of overdosing people with legal prescription drugs. Do you

think they really care? They get paid and in comes a new patient when you are no longer

around. Sounds very similar doesnt it? Prescribed medications have also become a way for the poverty stricken people to make

some money. Legal or not, they need to make money too. Everything short of selling yourbody for money is among us even here in Walton county. Ask the police how manypeople in jail have been caught with a pill or two in their pocket? How about a minoramount of marijuana found on them? While rapist, murderers, pedophiles post bond?

Changes need to be made to adapt laws into reasonable punishments and those realcriminals are the ones running our country? The real thieves are politicians that continueto serve year after year just going thru the motions. Even if within our own state. Someoneneeds to take control. Dont build more prisons, build more schools to teach these

uneducated children the right from wrong. Obviously, the parents who produced these

thugs had no moral upbringing either. Start at an early age, it becomes common to them.I know that when I get into my editorial the topics change as fast as my mind goes onabout certain topics. These are all important things, as parents we need to step up and dothe right thing. If you teach well at home, the rest of their life they will know right fromwrong. You will know if they are prison bound. Most of those in the system tend to getused to it and therefore continue a life of crime. To them its just a game at our expense.

Actions speak louder than words. Your kids are proof, if you are a good person or not.

Walton County Board of County Commissioners May 24th,

    2016 Board Wrap-up

Following is a summation of actions taken by the Walton County Board of County

Commissioners during their May 24th, 2016 regular scheduled Board meeting.

    Administration Items

Due to the number of planning projects currently in the pipeline through the WaltonCounty Planning Department, the board will hold a special BCC Planning Meeting onTuesday, June 24th at 5:00pm at the South Walton Annex. In addition, they havescheduled a tentative meeting on Tuesday, July 19th at 5:00pm at the South Walton

Annex in the event that an additional meeting is needed.

With the continued growth in the local economy and request for planning services, theBCC approved a plan to increase and expand the Planning Department through theaddition of more office space and the hiring of additional employees. These actions willallow the Planning Department to increase the efficiency and accuracy of projects moving

    through the planning process.

In order to receive an update and information in regard to potential Triumph funding, the

BCC approved the scheduling of a public workshop to take place on June 21st at 4:00pmat the South Walton Annex.

As the process is moving forward into the creation of the Countys FY 2016/2017 Budget,

the BCC approved to hold public budget workshops on July 7th at 9:00am at the Countys

DeFuniak Springs Board Room and July 11th at 9:00am at the South Walton Annex.

    TDC Items

The BCC approved a recommendation from the TDC to convert two seasonal beach CodeEnforcement Officers into two full-time positions. The addition of these full-time

positions will bring the TDCs number of full-time Code Officers from three to five.

At a prior meeting, the BCC heard information regarding a landscape improvementproject that would be conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to

improve the median on US Hwy 331 from South of the Choctawhatchee Bridge to theintersection of US Hwy 98. The BCC approved to move forward in partnership withFDOT to improve the medians. The improvements will include the installation of grassmedians, native shrubbery and the installation of an irrigation system. The improvementswill be funded by FDOT, and under contract, will be maintained for 2 years following thecompletion of the project. At the completion of the 2 year contract, future maintenance

will be facilitated by the TDC.

    Additional Items

The BCC approved the funding of the installation of a Splash Pad to be located at the J.C.Alford Park in Gaskin. The funding was made possible through a 10,000 donation fromthe St. Joe Company and a mix of funding that will come from both District 1 and District

4 Recreational Plat Fees. The Gaskin Community has waited a long time for this Splash Pad to become a reality. Itis a tribute to JC Alford, who loved children, that a Splash Pad is the first improvement atthe park that was named in his honor, said District 2 Commissioner Cecilia Jones. I am

so grateful for the generosity of the St. Joe Foundation and for the generosity ofCommissioner Sara Comander and Commissioner Bill Chapman. Gaskin wants to have

    some fun in the sun!

The BCC passed a Resolution, facilitated by a citizen request, recognizing June 14th,2016 as Grandparent Alienation Awareness Day in Walton County. The GrandparentRights Advocates National Delegation fights for the rights of grandparents to have

visitation with their grandchildren following the divorce of the parents.

As a dog friendly community, the Board was approached several months ago aboutpassing an Ordinance that would provide restaurants with the option of allowing dogs attheir restaurants in outside seating areas. Following the full process of approval, the BCCpassed the ordinance which now provides owners the ability to allow dogs at their

    facilities if they so choose.

Its Mosquito Season: The411 on Repellents

ED had a long weekend...ck the 30A Music scene

Theyre baaaack. Yep, its mosquito season again.

Its not just about itchy bumps, either -- mosquitobites can make you sick, especially if youre travel-ing. Think Zika, chikungunya, West Nile, dengue,or even malaria or yellow fever if youre going to

    some parts of Africa.

That means you need some insect repellent -- butsurprisingly, lots of people dont use it. An April

2016 survey done by market research firm TNSGlobal found that only about half of Americans(49%) follow the CDCs recommendation to use a

    mosquito repellent.

Zika poses a particular danger to pregnant women, since it causes birth defects. As it creeps northwardfrom South America and the Caribbean, healthofficials mission is to get the message out loud and

clear: Mosquito repellents are safe, and you should

    use them.

And there are more choices than ever.

The product thats right for you will depend on whyyou need it. Are you pregnant or traveling to an areawith a lot of mosquito-borne disease? Are youfishing or camping and handling lots of gear? Areyou applying it to a young childs skin? All those

things should factor into your buying decision.

We reached out to mosquito experts for advice onchoosing and using these products. Here are their

rules for making mosquito repellents work for you.

    Whats the best active ingredient?

According to the CDC and EPA, there are four

ingredients to look for: DEET, picaridin, oil oflemon eucalyptus or PMD, and IR3535.

DEET is the granddaddy of bug stoppers. It wasdeveloped by the U.S. military in 1946, and its themost widely used and studied active ingredient outthere. It's long gotten a bad rap as a scary chemical, but experts say that reputation isnt justified, evenfor pregnant women. Extremely high doses have, onrare occasions, caused nervous system problemslike seizures, tremors, and slurred speech, though,

so its still worth handling with care.

It's found in products like Off! Deep Woods spray,Sawyers Ultra 30 Insect Repellent lotion, and 3Ms

Ultrathon Insect Repellent lotions and sprays.

But DEET has its drawbacks, too. It can be heavyand feel oily on the skin. And it has a pungent odor.It also melts plastic, which is bad news for fishingand camping gear, synthetic fabrics like spandex, oreven a nice pair of sunglasses. So, if a heightenedsense of smell is keeping you from putting it on, oryou dont want it to ruin your gear or clothes,

    choose a different option.

Picaridin is a chemical cousin of piperine, achemical made by black pepper plants. It's beenwidely used in Europe and Australia, but has onlybeen available in the U.S. since 2005. It can befound in sprays, lotions, and wipes, includingSawyers Premium Picaridin Insect Repellent

lotions and sprays. Check ingredients first.

Alcohol often has harmful interactions with prescriptionmedications,over-the-counter drugs, and even some herbal remedies.Alcohol interactions with medications may cause problems such as:Nausea and vomiting / Headaches / Drowsiness / DizzinessFainting / Changes in blood pressure / Abnormal behaviorLoss of coordination / AccidentsMixing alcohol and medications also may increase the risk ofcomplications such as:Liver damage / Heart problems / Internal bleedingImpaired breathing / DepressionIn some cases, alcohol interactions may decrease the effectiveness ofmedications or render them useless. In other cases, alcohol interactionsmay make drugs harmful or even toxic to the body.Even in small amounts, alcohol also may intensify medication sideeffects such as sleepiness, drowsiness, and light-headedness, which mayinterfere with your concentration and ability to operate machinery ordrive a vehicle, and lead to serious or even fatal accidents.Because alcohol can adversely interact with hundreds of commonly usedmedications, it's important to observe warning labels and ask your doctor

or pharmacist if it's safe to use alcohol with any medications and herbalremedies that you take.

Do Not hesitate to call someone or ask someone for a ride if you arefeeling off balance or drowsy those are normally the most immediatesigns a person will feel after drinking just 2 beers. The wrong mixture ofalcohol and medications such as blood pressure pills could cause areaction even possible death.Thinking its just a small buzz is not worth risking your and anyone

elses life over. Think twice, for safety of people everywhere.

    Office Statement on NCCI Workers

    Compensation Rate Filing to Address

    Recent Legal Changes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.The Office of InsuranceRegulation received a workers compensation ratefiling today by the National Council on Compensa-tion Insurance (NCCI). This rate filing was submit-ted to address the projected rate impacts of two re-cent legal changes. The first is the April 28 thFloridaSupreme Court decision in the case of Castellanos

    v. Next Door Company (Castellanos), which foundthe mandatory attorney fee schedule in Section440.34,Florida Statutes, unconstitutional as a viola-tion of due process under both the Florida andUnited States Constitutions. The second is related toupdates within the Florida Workers Compensation

    Health Care Provider Reimbursement Manual

(HCPR Manual) per Senate Bill 1402.

The total impact is a combined rate increase of17.1% equaling $623 million. NCCI is proposing a15% statewide average rate increase to cover the

first year impact to workers compensation costs inFlorida due to the Castellanos decision and a 1.8%increase related to the adoption of the 2015 Editionof the HCPR Manual, which becomes effective July1, 2016. NCCI is also proposing an effective date ofAugust 1, 2016 for new and renewal workers com-pensation policies and that the 17.1% rate increaseapply to all workers compensation policies in effect

as of August 1, 2016 on a pro-rata basis for the re-

    mainder of each policys term.

A public rate hearing will be held in July to giveNCCI an opportunity to discuss the filing and inter-ested parties and other stakeholders the ability toprovide testimony or comments. More details will

be forthcoming at a later date.

Cincinnati Mother ignores her child as it wanted toswim in the Gorillas environment exhibit so when the 4yr old falls in, they

shoot and kill the 17yr old Silverback Gorilla? For the childs safety? Even withMother of the child standing close by, was on her cell phone ignoring her cryingchild wanting to climb where it should have never been. Neglect? As Zoos try to make your visit to seeing these rarely seen creatures in an open

display area. That still doesnt lessen the need for parents to watch their

children for they are at a Zoo with wild animals, agree? It shouldnt matter whatanimal display it is. The desire to have less visible cages for better photo ops

and socalled cruelty to the animal. The animal is still contained in a safe placefrom the public, where does the parents responsibility take over? The family now wants to sue the Cincinnati Zoo for millions of dollars?Where is the animal rights activists now? The Gorilla did nothing wrong, the

parents of this child did! Not only did she not watch for the safety of her childshe also runs a daycare full-time? You would think this would be in her instinctsto watch all of the children in her possession, obviously not.

As Zoos all across this nation have tried to make the experience of visitingone to remember. But at what cost?As many of us who were young didnt mind that there was a visible fence

protecting us from the animal as well as the animal from us hitting them orfeeding them. It is dangerous to be near wild animals, period.

Facebook has blown up with comments from both sides of this discussion. TheZoo is under scrutiny and now will suffer much revenue to care for its animals

all because of one Mothers desire to talk on the phone and ignore watching herown child? This is an injustice for animals of all kinds.

Would they shoot a penguin if it went towards a child or person in its environ-ment? Out of curiosity or whether it be out of fear. Someone inside their homewould startle you as much as someone entering your home. Whos the intruder?

Did the woman lose her license to watch for children at her daycare? Nope.So now, they have dollar signs in their eyes for allowing a child be in an endan-

gered environment. Whats the difference of her house having drugs? They callit child neglect and they get put in prison. Lose the right to raise children. But because this great beautiful creature reacted not in harm, but it was startled

and confused with all of the people witnessing this was screaming. Who knowswhat it may have done, but they shot it to kill. Thinking that sedation may havetaken time to kick-in and the child could have been killed. Gorillas have rightstoo. They let human animals loose then kill only actual animals? Why?

    Walton County Commissioner Bill

    Chapman District 1 Overview

Healthmark Health Matters by Ron KelleyWhen the thyroid gets lazy

Hypothyroidism is the medical term for having an underactive thy-roid, which means the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough impor-tant hormones. Left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to a numberof health problems, including heart disease. The good news is that

accurate thyroid function tests are available to diagnose hypothyroid-ism, and treatment of hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormoneis usually simple, safe and effective.

The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary, depending on theseverity of the hormone deficiency. In general, problems tend to de-velop slowly over a number of years. At first, it may be difficult tonotice the symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue and weightgain, but as the metabolism continues to slow, signs and symptomswill become more obvious.

Hypothyroidism is often associated heart disease because high lev-els of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterolthe "bad" choles-terolcan occur in people with an underactive thyroid. Even sub-

clinical hypothyroidism, a mild or early form of hypothyroidism inwhich symptoms have not yet developed, can cause an increase intotal cholesterol levels and impair the pumping ability of the heart.Hypothyroidism can also lead to an enlarged heart and heart failure.

Hypothyroidism upsets the normal balance of chemical reactions inyour body. It seldom causes symptoms in the early stages, but overtime, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health prob-lems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.

Hypothyroidism signs and symptom may include fatigue, increasedsensitivity to cold, constipation, weight gain, puffy face, hoarseness, elevated blood cholesterol level, muscle stiffness and pain or swelling

in the joints.Long-term uncontrolled hypothyroidism can cause damage to thenerves that carry information from the brain and spinal cord to the restof the body. This may result in pain, numbness and tingling in thearea affected by the nerve damage. It may also cause muscle weak-ness or loss of muscle control.

Fortunately, standard treatment for hypothyroidism is simple andeffective. It involves the daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormonelevothyroxine (usually Levothroid or Synthroid). This oral medicationrestores adequate hormone levels and reverses the signs and symp-toms of hypothyroidism. Treatment with levothyroxine is lifelong anda physician will likely to check your TSH level often at first and then

usually once every year. Levothyroxine causes virtually no side ef-fects when used in the appropriate dose and is relatively inexpensive. However, do not skip doses or stop taking the drug when feeling bet-ter because symptoms of hypothyroidism will gradually return.

To find out more, contact Dr. Tom Roberts at Healthmark Walk-InClinic, (850) 951-4556.

Surveys of people under 35Oh no! We have all read studies and surveys about the economy,

politics, history and current affairs of todays youth. I say that we are in a heap of trouble. When asked about important dates of History, the results

are stunning. Over 93% of 100 students in College wereasked simple questions. Such as when was Americafounded? When was the Constitution written and bywhom? What country did we want to become Free from?

Who did we fight in WWII? Why did we fight?Such questions were asked to our future generation ofcollege scholars. Guess what only 7% got most of the an-swers correct. But not without some hints or clues to help. But when you asked them about the characters of TVshow Jersey Shore? They knew it all, fast and quickresponses. Todays youth knows more about Reality Stars

than they do actual REALITY in the USA. It makes a person wonder what good is a Degree going todo you if you have no idea about your countys history. To think that the parents they will become, the children

will know less and less as each year passes.

When you speak of how things used to be, do they seemcurious to why? Or how did that become? Or do thosekids say that was the past, who cares? You will see adecline in intelligence from statistical facts the next gen-erations are failing to continue to instill proper knowledgeof the Facts. NO, you CANNOT trust the GOVT. Yet theyseem to like Bernie Sanders ideas? Get a clue Parents andG.Parents. They are not teaching this in school anymore, where are they going to learn this? Never will they..

Parents who refused to treat dead sonsdiabetes with insulin charged with first-

    degree murder

Rodica Radita didnt want to accept that her son had Type-1 diabetes. She and her husbands refusal to treat theirsons illness resulted in numerous hospitalizations over 12

years, until their son Alex died at 15-years-old in 2013

    weighing just 37 pounds.

Now, the Raditas have been charged with first-degree

murder in connection to their sons death.

After his initial diagnosis, Alex Radita went for yearswithout seeing a doctor. The lack of care ultimately senthim to the emergency room on numerous occasions, one

time when he was near death.

In December 2000, Alex was hospitalizedfor the first time. The hospital initially re-fused to discharge Alex because his parentswere in denial about his medical condition. The family was trained on how to treat his

diabetes and Alex was returned to them.

Three months later, in March 2001, Alex was again admit-ted to hospital under the threat that he would be removedfrom his familys home after doctors suspected his parents

were faking his blood sugar readings.

Doctors found Alex in terrible shape: his teeth were rotten, his stomach distended, he was malnourished and nearly

    unconscious.

His blood sugar was undetectable. Rodica Radita told

medical staff her son had only been sick for two days.

At that time, the boy was considered severely under-weight for a five-year-old and weighed 39 pounds, just

two pounds heavier than when he died at the age of 15.

When the family failed to show up for an appointment inJuly of 2008, an investigation was launched. It was laterdiscovered the Roditas moved to Alberta. No action wastaken and there was never any interaction between B.C.and Alberta child and family services, said prosecutor

    Susan Pepper.

On May 7, 2013, Police were called to the Radita homewhere Alex was found in medical distress. He waspronounced dead later that day. According to the autopsyreport, the cause of death was bacterial sepsis

(Staphyloccus Aureus) due to complications from neglectof his diabetes and starvation.

    Gov't report: Airports need

    more help keeping intruders out

Congress asked the U.S.Government AccountabilityOffice to investigate how oftenpeople get past airportperimeter security, and whetherthe TSA could do more to helpairports anticipate and prevent

    incidents.

Using TSA data, the account-ability office identified over2,500 security incidents in each

of the past three years at thenation's roughly 440commercial airports. Thoseincidents ranged from peoplejumping fences to reach jetsand passenger terminals toworkers who forgot theirsecurity badges piggy-backingwith a colleague through

    checkpoints.

    The report notes that the

nation's medium and smallairports, which typically haveless money to invest inperimeter security, have plentyof incidentsbut do notundergo the "joint vulnerabilityassessments" that large airportsreceive every three years from

    the TSA and FBI.

The report also said that theTSA has made some progressin doing joint vulnerability

assessments. In 2009, theaccountability office said thatduring fiscal years 2004-2008,the TSA did assessments at 57airportscompared with 81airports from fiscal years 2009-2015. During those recentyears, smaller airports hadmore than 1,600 security inci-

    dents, according to TSA data.
