The Messiah was expected to free the Jewish people from
oppression , and restore the freedom and holiness of their
nation. Jesus instead reveals that the Messiah will suffer, die and be raised from the dead and that true discipleship requires self-denial and sacrifice.
Understanding this, let us take up our cross each day and follow Jesus.
Administrator of Sts. Peter and Paul ~ Bishop Paprocki has appointed me to serve as temporary administrator of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Alton until further notice. Monsignor Kenneth Steffen who is the pastor of the parish requested a medical leave of absence and Bishop Paprocki granted the leave effective immediately. So what are the responsibilities of a temporary administrator? Basically, I will oversee day to day operations of the parish and school, schedule priests to cover weekend and week day Masses, celebrate weddings and funerals if necessary. Please remember the parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish and Monsignor Steffen in your prayers.

Called and Sent July 10-15, 2016
‘Called and Sent’ is a program that offers high school students the opportunity to be formed as the next generation of disciples in the Church. The program will provide an environment in which young people will be able to encounter Christ in a personal and powerful way. They will come to understand who Christ is, and in coming to know Him, they will come to better understand who they are in relationship to Him. This then leads to a greater awareness of how they are called to live their faith intentionally as disciples.

The Celebration of Saint Mary Magdalene is Upgraded to a Feast Day
Acting upon the wishes of Pope Francis, Archbishop Arthur Roche the secretary of the Vatican congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree on June 10th that has elevated the liturgical celebration honoring St. Mary Magdalene from a memorial to a feast putting her on par with the Apostles. Her feast day is on July 22 and when we celebrate her feast day at Mass next July the Gloria will be sung (or said) and special prayers dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene will be said most notably a new preface.
In the letter that accompanied the decree Archbishop Roche reasoned that because Mary is the witness to the risen Christ and announces that message just like the rest of the Apostles, then her celebration should be a feast day the same as the Apostles. In fact, St. Thomas Aquinas called Mary Magdalene the “Apostle to the Apostles” because Jesus sent her to the other Apostles to announce his resurrection and to tell them to return to Galilee.
In his letter Archbishop Roche said that the decision to honor St. Mary Magdalene with a feast “seeks to reflect more deeply upon the dignity of women, upon the new evangelization and on the greatness of the mystery of God’s Mercy.” He called Mary an example of a true and authentic evangelizer.
St. Mary Magdalene has often been wrongly identified as the sinful woman who washed our Lord’s feet with her tears. In fact, Luke says she was cured of seven demons by Jesus and was one of the women who accompanied Jesus and his disciples and cared for them.

A question we ask often as human beings is, “Why is this happening?” The next question is usually, “How can this be fixed?” When we feel pain and see pain in others like we did this past week with the Orlando shooting, it can bring out the best in people. It can also bring out the worst in people. Pain is a part of being human. We have choices with our pain. We can try to avoid it, deny it, numb it or fight it. We have another option too, we can engage it; this means giving it our full attention and use it to teach us and change us. Barbara Taylor Brown suggests making a graph of your life –writing your birthday at the left side of the page and today’s date at the right, filling in the major events that have made you who you are—then you are likely to note that the spikes in your pain bear some relationship to the leaps in your growth. These are usually not ways you would have chosen to become more than you were, but they worked.
In this week’s first reading from Zechariah, the prophet understands that Jerusalem has some lessons to learn. He was writing in a time when poverty and suffering was happening to the people of Jerusalem. He announces that God will use the pain of Israel for cleansing. It is important to note here that he didn’t announce that God caused the suffering. We know it was the actions of the rulers, the people, and the fact that we are human is the cause. But through God we are able to use our pain to grow and change. Like the people of Jerusalem when we see or experience evil, suffering, injustice and even death; it seems to contradict what we have been promised in our faith. Our faith can be shaken. It is not the way we would choose to become closer to God. However, through the examples of people in our everyday lives who we have seen triumph in tragedy or suffer heroically, we can better cope with our own pain and have hope for renewed vision, change and love. St. Paul reminds us that we are all
children of God. As Baptized Christians we have put on Christ, therefore we have a responsibility to be Christ like for others no matter who they are.
In several of his homilies and lessons Bishop Robert Barron encourages us to love what Jesus loved on the cross. Jesus had no wealth, pleasure, power or honor on the cross. He fulfilled his work by offering his will and power for sacrifice and love. Luke’s perspective in the Gospel today help to remind us that the crosses we bear are not for our destruction but for growth and hope for ourselves and for building the Kingdom of God. “If anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself take up his cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) and RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) is a process for those who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and begins in early September.

throughout the world in Rome next June 2017. The trip will include singing a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. We are very excited and honored to have been invited to participate in this Choral Festival.
Parishioners are welcome to join us on this trip. If you’ve never been to Italy, now is your chance! Spend 10 days/11 nights visiting Rome & Vatican City, attending a Papal audience & Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, then off to Assisi (Basilica of St. Francis), Montecatini, Florence, Padua (Basilica of St. Anthony) & Venice. Our Gospel Reading for today finishes with the Lord telling us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” That may sound somewhat foreboding to us as we strive to follow Him and to be His disciple.
We need to see that from another perspective, however. Jesus was fond of teaching by using references to plants and planting. On multiple occasions he cites seeds in His teachings. If we consider it, we bury a seed; in effect it dies. Nevertheless, it must die for it to fulfill what it was intended to be. It cannot produce fruit; become a tree unless it goes through the process of dying to what it once was.
That is Jesus’ message for us. If we truly wish to follow Him, we must die to what we once may have been, or in some cases to what we may think we want to be. We have to learn to look at ourselves as the Lord might look at us. The ongoing question is “What does the Lord want me to be?” or “How does the Lord want me to serve Him and others?”
It is not easy to serve the Lord. It is not comfortable to always think of others first. Yet, those are Jesus’ instructions to us. That is His call to us. As He reminded us many times, “I came to serve, not to be served.” That needs to be our goal as well. That is what stewardship is all about.

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has called each of us to be a witness of charity. He encourages us to "open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!" (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15).
The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster and disease. Knights of Columbus, Edwardsville Council 1143
Golf Fundraiser: All are welcome to join the Knight’s largest fundraiser of the year, which provides us the funds to contribute to the two parishes and high school we support, will be held on Saturday, July 9, at Oak Brook. Fish Fry: The Knights hold a Fish Fry on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month. Hours are from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Bethalto Knights of Columbus will be holding a Buffet Chicken Dinner for their Scholarship Program on Sunday, June 19, from 11:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. Adults $10/Children $5 (5-10 yrs old). Dinner is served in OLQP Parish School Gym located at 132 Butcher St., Bethalto, IL. Adult carry outs available. All you can eat menu includes fried chicken, chicken strips, mashed potatoes & gravy, mac & cheese, vegetable, applesauce, dessert and drink. Proceeds go to Council’s Scholarship Program and OLQP Parish.

Anointing of the Sick ~ Parishioners who are seriously or critically ill, or having surgery, should contact the pastor for the celebration of the
sacrament.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults ~ The R.C.I.A. is an ongoing formation process for adults who are interested in becoming a Catholic and would like to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First
Eucharist. Call the Parish Office for additional information.
