Thank you
From Father John
I would like to thank everyone who contributed in
any way to the memorable “Day of Gratitude”
afforded me on the occasion of my retirement from
service to St. Malachy and Our Lady of Consolation.
I truly enjoyed every minute of it and of my 18 years
with you.
Most of all, I will miss the regular contact with my
many friends. In that regard, I am providing the
following information for those who would like to
drop me a note at my new residence.
Thank you again and know that I will always keep
you in my thoughts and prayers.

June 15, 2014-Feast of the Most Holy Trinity
Most readers of mystery stories would agree that the best of them take unexpected twists and turns as the story
unfolds. Just when we think we know “whodunit”, a sudden event happens that surprises us, and off we read-
ers go to a new target among the possible suspects.
When the author wraps up the case, and the killer either heads to jail or suffers a worse fate, we are usually
satisfied and close the book cover. (Or we tap the exit button on our e-reader.)
The dogma of the Most Blessed Trinity is not that kind of mystery, for sure. Nor is it presented to us in Sacred
Scripture by the Church to imply that our task is to try and solve it.
In a Vatican Council II document entitled “Dei Filius” (“Son of God”) we read the following: “By natural rea-
son man can know God with certainty on the basis of His works. But there is another order of knowledge,
which men cannot possibly arrive at by his own powers, the order of divine revelation.”
The word “revelation” literally means a “pulling back of a veil.” When you think about it, what is so touching
in this case is the fact that, as the Catholic Catechism puts it, “God freely chose to share this previously hidden
mystery with us. God’s sharing was an act of friendship for us, revealing Himself as one reveals his or her
heart to a friend. Love does such things.”
So, in the end, this feast is all about love. However, it is a love infinitely greater, for example, than our Valen-
tine’s Day, or today’s calendar event of Fathers’ Day. Why? Because the love we are celebrating is an infinite
kind. There is never a lessening of it. And, no matter that we weak creatures often forget to return it to God, or
disregard it, or even decide to turn against it through sin, it remains constant.
One good confession and it is restored like new.
There is on this Trinity Sunday 2014, a fortuitous calendar connection with Fathers’ Day. Since we honor to-
day our earthly fathers, we have the opportunity to honor our heavenly Father.
For He it is who sent both His only begotten Son to save us, and a Holy Spirit who enables us to walk through
life with our heads held high in confident hope.
So, rather than a mystery to be solved, this feast is all about a love story to be honored. One that involves us.
And a never-ending story at that. So rejoice and be glad!
First Reading: Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9
God renews His covenant with Israel, while also declaring Himself “slow to anger and rich in kindness.”
Israel is declared His adopted nation.
Second Reading: II Corinthians 13:11-13
In the closing words of his letter, St. Paul urges his readers to strengthen their bonds of love so as to better live
in unity and peace.
Gospel: John 3:16-18
The evangelist interrupts his story to teach the great truth of God the Father’s love for the world, as shown by
His sending of His Son to redeem us. We can believe it via the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
