Access Training
Access Training is a work-based learning provider that has been successfully providing work-based
learning and pre-employment programmes in the East Midlands for over 30 years. Since October 2010
Access Training has provided construction skills courses in Derby city and currently works with
secondary and special schools in Derby and Nottinghamshire.
Access Training encourages young people to develop an understanding of the construction sector
through work-related learning, including hands on experience, raising pupil expectations of
progressing into either further education or employment. At the start of the programme, the learners
will have a thorough induction programme which includes health and safety, expected behaviour
standards and the pupils’ responsibilities for themselves and others at the centre.
Learners can attend between half a day and three days per week, achieving appropriate unit-based
construction qualifications. This can include brickwork, plumbing, joinery and painting & decorating.
Subject to availability, there may be an opportunity for learners who have completed their
qualification to attend educational visits to construction trade shows as part of the Skills and
Employability Programme.
Baby People
Baby People is a music and arts development organisation and the UK’s first dedicated Hip Hop school
which uses art and culture to engage and support the needs of the most deprived in our communities.
We believe that art and music can be empowering tools and forms of expression for people in all
stages of life. Baby People’s educational work covers students from primary school age to Adult
Education. The focus of the work Baby People does is on artistic excellence. It aspires to push the
boundaries, working practices and experiences of all those it engages, regardless of their entry point.
The organisation is not for profit and the work it undertakes should be clearly involved in developing
culture, the arts and communities. Baby People is led by a board and management team that is
made up of artists, arts professionals and young people who advise on Baby People’s future ventures.
Classes can take place at our recording studios for offsite. Our tutors all work professionally in their
field and include UK champion breakdances, commissioned artist, MCs, songwriters and producers
that have been played on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing and 1Xtra, as well as MTV and
some have toured with Jay Z and Mark Ronson. Baby People can provide workshops and educational
classes in Music Production, Creative Writing & Lyrics, Breakdance, Aerosol and Graffiti Art.

CAST Angling
CAST Angling started as a community fishing project, run voluntarily by the current Managing Director
in a deprived coalfield village in 2001. CAST Angling has been working with schools in Nottingham
since 2003 and with The Kingsmead School since 2008. CAST is now a Community Interest
Company/Social Enterprise working with Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire County Councils; Derby City
Council and many independent schools. CAST has had an organic development into alternative
education. The original voluntary project predated much alternative education and was designed
to use angling to encourage learning in and out of a school capacity. Although CAST was originally
an angling project, it now has a significant focus on land based studies and work. CAST has always
been a young person centred project. CAST courses are designed with young people to create an
exciting and enjoyable learning experience, which enables the participant to develop a range of life
and transferable skills.
Derby City Boxing Academy
Derby City Boxing academy is a leading provider of Amateur Boxing and Keep Fit/Personal Training
activities within the East Midlands and is affiliated by the Amateur Boxing Association. The provision is
led by ex-boxers and qualified Amateur Boxing Association coaches who possess vast amounts of
boxing/fitness experience. This is a great provision that can teach the techniques and skills required
to become either an amateur Boxer or a Keep Fit/Personal Training Instructor. Young people will learn
the techniques and skills required under qualified instruction and supervision. The boxing element is
non-contact. Our students come from many different cultural backgrounds, both male and female
and the club aims to building self-esteem, confidence, improved communication skills, respect, self-
discipline and life skills. The sport of boxing and fitness has many positive attributes and can deliver
personal improvement to each student. Working towards the recognised qualifications on offer,
enable students to improved their roles in society and lead more constructive and healthier lives.

Educ8
Educ8 Group is a work-based learning provider that has been successfully providing work-based
learning and pre-employment programmes across England for the past ten years. This will be our first
appearance in Derby and we hope to provide all our learners with a high quality vocational offer.
We focus on a safe learning environment and work towards the following OFSTED guidelines
• Good or above attainment
• Good or above behaviour management
• Good or above quality teaching
• Good or above leadership and management
Educ8 encourages young people to develop an understanding of their interested sector through
work-related learning, including hands on experience, raising pupil expectations of progressing into
either further education or employment. At the start of the programme, the learners will have a
thorough induction programme which includes health and safety, expected behaviour standards and
the pupils’ responsibilities for themselves and others at the centre. They will complete an induction
booklet and sign up to our behaviour policy.
Learners can attend between half a day and three days per week, achieving appropriate unit-based
qualification at Level 2, with a level 1 fall back. These qualifications sit on the approved DFE list.
Engineered Learning
Engineered Learning was conceived in 2011 to fill a huge gap between industry and education; to
support young people through challenging stages of their lives and to help develop a foundation of
transferable skill sets. Students engage in the manufacture of skips and structural steel work for the
construction industry. Our vocational engineering training provides learners with valuable steel
fabrication and welding engineering skills. These new skills provide a solid foundation from which
learners can progress into the many exciting areas of modern engineering. With an emphasis on
teamwork, many of these skills are transferable into everyday life, from the welding of a friend's car to
using measuring and estimating skills to support independent living. By utilising the BTEC accreditation,
each individual will be able to take away nationally recognised qualifications to assist them in their
career development.
Engineered Racing, which is a sister of the Learning business, was established in 2017. Engineered
Racing works to implement the same learning objectives/training provision, however, with an
emphasis on the motor vehicle industry instead of engineering. Our brand new venue (June 2018)
has been purposely set up to allow students to have the opportunity to learn car maintenance, with
hands-on experience of building Kit Cars together with stripping and preparing cars for Auto grass
racing.

Fleet Tutors
Established forty years ago, Fleet Tutors has worked with over a third of local authorities across the UK,
providing high quality, bespoke tuition to approximately 3,000 students each year across a broad
range of subjects. Since 2006, we have operated a specialist division for the provision of
supplementary (after school) and alternative provision (in place of school) for young people with
complex needs. In response to clients who had been referring us out-of-school learners, we established
our Alternative Provision (AP) Service in 2012 to deliver managed, holistic alternative education
programmes with one-to-one tuition at the core. An alternative education for learners unable to
attend school or who needed support to remain in school, our AP harnesses the range of educational
expertise available in our management team and across our network of 4000 self-employed tutors (all
tutors need to have the minimum of an honours degree in the subject). We provide one-to-one tuition
for approximately over 3000 young people per year across the UK. Our tuition spans all key stages,
and we also work with LAC, children with SEND and EHCPs.
G-Music
Established September 2015, G-Music is committed to the delivery of high quality music education
that is inspirational for young people whether they are accomplished musicians or have no previous
experience in music making. Young people will be able to create complete songs or instrumental
pieces using live instruments, music technology or by simply conveying their ideas and song structures
to the tutor, to be performed and recorded during their session. The mood and style of a piece of
music, lyrical content and instrumentation will be entirely chosen by the students, allowing them to
express themselves fully. Instrumental lessons and group music sessions have led to individual and
group performance from small informal school settings to larger public events. Alternative education
is incredibly rewarding and can have immense positive changes. It can nurture the abilities of students
who may be lacking in confidence, but have a strong affinity to music.
Experienced in the music industry, G-Music staff have toured across Europe and America with The Red
Hot Chilli Peppers, Soundgarden, Hot Chip, KT Tunstall, Gabriela Cilmi, Bloodhound Gang, etc.

Hair and Beauty
Our Hairdressing and Beauty training salon is designed to motivate and inspire students to reach their
full potential. This dynamic, creative area will develop students’ practical skills and our fully-qualified
tutors share a wide range of industry experience. Students tell us that they enjoy our supportive
learning environment, where they can learn new skills and form new friendships. Designed to build on
the students’ interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry, the introductory courses that we
offer can lead students, both male and female, on to a wide range of tailored qualifications. These
qualifications require students to complete practical demonstrations in a realistic hair and beauty
salon and produce written assignments for a portfolio of evidence.
Nisai Virtual Academy Ltd.
Nisai Virtual Academy is an online school. We provide quality assured, live lessons, taught by qualified,
subject specialists allowing students to engage with staff and peers through a virtual classroom. Nisai
offers youngsters the opportunity to thrive and achieve on either short or long term curriculums
spanning across Key Stage – Key Stage 5. Accessible from a PC or laptop, pupils can participate in
their learning from a variety of locations. Nisai can be accessed from anywhere with an internet
connection and so this can result in vulnerable learners not having to travel long distances to access
education. Students can enter their lesson classrooms, find homework assignments, access their
emails or socialise with other students. By being involved in groups of young people albeit it in a virtual
environment, we have seen learners grow in confidence, become tolerant of others and see an
increase in resilience to other learners.

The Island Project Farming & Education
Centre Ltd.
The Island Project is not just a farm. The purpose of the Island Project is to offer a unique alternative
educational service for children and young people who because of their varying complex needs,
cannot attend full time mainstream school. We believe that every child is important and matters. Our
innovative and comprehensive vocational programme incorporates skilled learning and practical
development alongside academic qualifications, all set within a farming & agricultural environment.
We are based on a 4 acre farming site, with animals, including donkeys, llamas, goats and small
animals. Working with and caring for animals, offers young people transferable life skills and gives them
greater understanding of the world. We believe in unconditional regard for others and strive to offer
a person centred approach with the ability to ‘think out of the box’; to find solutions that will enable
our young people to achieve their full potential; grow in confidence and develop a non-judgemental
tolerance for others.
YMCA Derbyshire’s Key College
YMCA Derbyshire is a registered charity with a vision ‘‘for every young person to develop their full
potential and for all communities and individuals to achieve’’. We have been at the heart of Derby
City since 1847 and formally became a charity and company limited by guarantee in 1995. We have
over 10 years’ expertise in developing and differentiating our offer to deliver quality alternative
education, with an AP Excellence Award in 2015/16 and an Alternative Provision Gold Award in
2016/17. Ofsted noted (January 2017) that almost all learners had significant barriers to learning and
tutors “work well” to help learners gain the skills for progression. Our mission is to holistically develop
the whole person in body, mind and spirit. Our core values: to protect, trust, hope and persevere,
underpin all of our services. We specialise in working with those individuals that are the most
challenging/furthest from the job market. With our unique approach, individuals regain their self-belief
and confidence: both are essential requirements for re-engagement with services, including
education, and an eventual move into the world of work. We strive to make a positive difference to
our young people, supporting them to reach their potential as empowered individuals so they can
‘‘Belong, Contribute and Thrive’’.

Pony Partnership C.I.C
Pony Partnerships was set up in 2015 by Danielle Mills. Danielle’s specialist areas included working with
children and young people, those affected by eating difficulties and disorders and body image and
self-esteem issues, bereavement, life limiting illnesses, anxiety, depression, and behaviour issues.
Danielle has experience of working with children, young people, and adults within psychiatric
inpatient care, community mental health settings, education settings and residential care within the
statutory, private and voluntary sector. Danielle has also received funding with her CIC to work with
children and young people who have been excluded from mainstream education, alongside horses
to facilitate learning and personal development. This includes children from a local school for the
deaf, in which Danielle can communicate with up to BSL Level 1. Danielle is a Registered Member of
the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and a senior Equine Facilitated
Therapy Practitioner and Supervisor with LEAP.
All our work is delivered by qualified counsellors, psychotherapists and trainers who have specialist
training in Equine Facilitated Therapeutic Activities (EFTA), and are experienced with working with
children and young people in the area of mental health. This demographic often struggle to engage
with mainstream therapies. EFTA is an experiential therapy and a unique environment to explore and
experience different way to behave or think. EFTA can help children and young people to develop
the skills to support them in accessing education and mainstream support.
The company’s stakeholders are children, young people and their families, and professionals working
with children and young people in the surrounding area. The directors of the company have worked

with children and young people for a number of years and developed the business model for service
based on their experience of talking to children, young people and their families, and professionals
working with children and young people.

We are a tuition provider, so we do not offer specific qualifications, however we can enter students
for exams and take over the administration of this.
Our highly qualified and experienced tutors cover
Maths, English, Science, IT along with a range of other
academic subjects and are experienced in
overcoming potential barriers to learning.
Different tutors have different teaching methods and
styles. All our tutors have specific resources and
materials for the age groups tutored, including those
with special/additional needs. One of the primary
benefits of private tuition is that the tutor can tailor
his/or her method to the needs of the individual student in a way that cannot be achieved in the
larger group classroom setting. There is no set pattern or material for private tuition. Every student is an
individual, and student and tutor need to find their best approach together. The background
information given before starting is of great help and the tutor will ask for any additional information
needed.
Tuition is delivered at learner’s home; school or at other Local Authority approved venue (i.e. public
library). Tuition normally consists of one-hour sessions. Shorter or longer sessions should be agreed in
advance between client and tutor. Fleet Tutors also offers an online learning hub containing our

resource library, where tutors choose tried and tested resources appropriate to the individual learners’
needs.
Fleet Tutors focus on embedding a culture of high aspirations, with an emphasis on personalised
academic and developmental progression. Our young learners progress not only in terms of
academics, but also engagement. We recognise all learners have their own individual needs,
interest and passions. Our tutors look for whatever it is that can capture a learners’ interest and
base the learning around this. One to one tuition programmes based on learners’ interests with
academic learning at the core, results in highly engaged students, that make progress personally
as their motivation levels increase, as well as academically.
The ways our young people have progressed are as follows:
• Academic progression - increase in attainment level by end of tuition programme
• Engagement progression – increase in confidence, self-belief and engagement in
learning

Employers are often looking for skills that go beyond qualifications and experience.
While education and experience make young people eligible to apply for a job, to be successful in
the role they will need to exhibit a mix of skills, ‘employability skills’. This means that the specialist,
technical skills associated with different roles may be less important than the 'soft skills' that can be
transferred between different jobs and different employment sectors.
For employers, getting the right people means identifying people with the right skills and qualities to
fulfil the role and contribute to the organisation's success. Young people may have the qualifications
and 'hard skills' needed to be able to manage the job role but, without a well-honed set of 'soft skills',
employers are less inclined to employ them.

Arts Therapy
Year 1 – Year 11 Minimum capacity for a discrete group: 1
(maximum capacity: none)
Catharsis works with some of the most vulnerable and challenging young people across the Midlands.
A significant proportion of these young people have issues and/or needs which impact on their
emotional health. In turn, this can impact on their ability to learn and work in an educational setting.
In order to support these young people to access education, Catharsis has set up bespoke mental
health services within many schools. Our team of Arts Therapists are able to offer support to staff and
parents as well as students. They feed into school management systems, safeguarding meetings and
work closely with parents and school staff to achieve the best results for all involved.
Catharsis therapists use a variety of Psychotherapeutic models within their specialism, working with
each client in a person centred way. Goal based outcomes are identified by the individual and the
wider MDT. Activities are employed at the client’s pace, with respect for their need to utilise defensive
mechanisms in a fluid fashion; children are allowed to set their own pace for self-expression through
play and art, though it is important to acknowledge no creative skills are needed to benefit from the
Arts Therapies. Activities will vary according to needs for adaptive coping, the nature of trauma,
temperament, cultural diversity and other factors.
We work with complex and highly traumatised children, adolescents and their families. We select the
right therapist for each client and wherever possible work with children and young people in school.
In doing so we can work with the team around the family to help individuals engage with and maintain
their education placements, thus improving aspirations and positive future outcomes. However, at
times it is not always appropriate to see a young person or other family members in school and so we
would invite them to attend our Arts Therapy Centre in Derby City Centre or other suitable location.
*We can deliver our therapy services within your school or at our Arts Therapy Centre and the group
size can vary.

Equine Facilitated Therapy & Learning
Years 1 – Year 11 Minimum capacity for a discrete group: 1
(maximum capacity: 6)
Pony Partnerships’ activities provide benefit to children and
young people by making a positive impact through equine
facilitated therapeutic activities (EFTA). This includes:
• enabling young people to participate better in society;
organising activity and alternative education programmes
centred around equine facilitated activities;
• helping young people advance in life and develop their
skills, confidence, capabilities and capacities using equine
facilitated activities;
• developing an evidence base to support the use of
equine facilitated activities with children and young people
with a variety of issues.
The principles that apply to building a relationship with a horse transfer to healthy human relationships.
People often repeat patterns of relating when working with a horse; the non-judgemental response of
the horse can make it easier for clients to identify how they create those same problems in relationship
with themselves and others, taking appropriate responsibility for the relationships in their lives. This
process can help young people to address and move through past or present damaging life
circumstances, understand how those circumstances affect their current interactions, and make the
personal changes necessary for healthy, fulfilling relationships in the present and future. Where group
work is appropriate, this will also provide an environment to practice the development of practical,
informal networks that allow clients to receive advice, make friends, reduce isolation and grasp
positive opportunities.
Evidence shows that this demographic often struggle to engage with mainstream therapies. EFTA is
an experiential therapy and a unique environment to explore and experience different ways to
behave or think. EFTA can help children and young people to develop the skills to support them in
accessing education, employment, and mainstream support. Evidence from a variety of sources (on

request) also shows that EFTA help young people develop social and emotional capabilities
including:
• improved well-being;
• psychosocial benefits;
o managing feelings – regulating emotional behaviour is correlated with higher wages
• positive change;
• increased perceived social support;
• self-esteem and self;
• more consistent behaviour:
• lower cortisol levels;
• increased problem-solving skills and general self:
o planning and problem solving –problem solving, alongside resilience, provides young
people with a ‘positive protective armour’ against negative outcomes associated with
risky life events;
• fewer mentally distressing symptoms;
• improved nonverbal and verbal communication and interpersonal effectiveness:
o communication – good communication is essential for a successful transition to work or
training, for independence and to access a range of life opportunities (Clegg et al.,
1999). The Rose Review (Rose, 2006) and Bercow Report (Bercow, 2008) highlighted the
role of communication in attainment, and forming positive relationships. Improved
communication skills have also been linked to reductions in reoffending.
o relationships and leadership – there is a strong relationship between emotional
intelligence, positive school transitions and academic success;
• trust;
• boundaries and limit-setting.
