Jack Russell needs no introduction to cricketfans locally or across the country – he is oneof the legendary characters to have keptwicket for both Gloucestershire andEngland. However, many may not beaware that his sporting prowess wasalways matched by his ability to paint.Sadly, Jack no longer dons the keeper’s

gloves at the crease, but his passion andenjoyment of art continues and, notsurprisingly, cricket features strongly inhis work.In 1994 Jack acquired his premises in

Chipping Sodbury High Street and, afterextensive refurbishment, The Jack Russell Gallerywas opened to house his collection – and itprovides a wonderful backdrop to his portfolio. With over two hundred oil paintings on display,in addition to cricket the subject matter rangesfrom rugby and snooker to sea and landscapes, wildlife, historic buildings and portraits. One of his favourite paintings is also one of his

earliest, depicting the wartime raid on StNazaire. The picture was inspired by thebrother of the gallery manager, Jim Ruston, whotook part in the raid. For cricket enthusiasts numerous ‘Ashes’

images and Jack’s current project is a bookcontaining paintings of all the 70+ grounds hehas played at. There are also paintings ofDickie Bird, test umpire from 1973-1996,during his last match – officiating betweenEngland and India. Jack scored124 runs in the second test andwas the last person to bedismissed by Dickie Bird in hislong, illustrious career.A number of paintings have

been bought by other cricketers, with scenes of the Ashes inparticular demand from formerAustralian test stars. When asked about his

favourite venues, Jack said:“Apart from the Ashes at Lords,Cheltenham College is myfavourite ground. A fast pitch andenthusiastic crowd – fuelledwith cider and lager – make for

an entertaining match withgreat atmosphere. When Iget my cricketingcalendar, one of thefirst things I do is checkwho will be playing atthe College.”Jack’s testimonial

match in 2004 was atCheltenham, wherehe was carried off by

Courtney Walsh andDavid ‘Sid’ Lawrence. This

was also the last time he wore wicketkeeping gloves.Rugby at Kingsholm and snooker continue the

sporting theme, with major events and matchesoften being the subject matter that appeals to Jackmost. The Inns of Court form part of anarchitectural angle to the collection, but the largestsection is devoted to landscapes – in particularscenes from around his nativeGloucestershire.

Famous Face

There’s an opportunity to view some of Jack’s paintings in Cheltenham which will be on display at the inaugural Gloucestershire Sports Festival (30th June& 1st July). The Cheltenham Cricket Festival runs from 11th-22nd July. See our ‘What’s On’ pages for further information on both these events.

Prinknash Bird & Deer Park had some terrific news in May – following thebirth of Cupid this time last year, Rudolf’s beloved Prancer has given birthto another reindeer calf. As migratory animals, in the wild reindeer areconstantly on the move, and to enable them to survive the demands ofthis existence the females show no sign of being pregnant. So you canimagine the staff ’s surprise and excitement when one Saturday morningComet came to earth at 8.30am! He seems to have settled into his newsurroundings and mother Prancer is looking after him very well.

Café René have been successful sponsors of the GloucesterRhythm and Blues Festival for the last nine years and arelooking forward to hosting a bigger and better event in Julyto celebrate their 10th anniversary. The festival has grown to be one of the most recognisedevents in the City’s calendar – bringing people togetherfrom all over the world to enjoy this fantastic, free musiccelebration. In previous years Café René owner Paul Soden hasbeen proud to host The Animals, Larry Miller, MikeSanchez, Perry Foster, Innes Sibun, Paul Lamb and TheKing Snakes to name but a few, and he is keen for theline up to evolve every year. This summer’s line up is totally ‘Blues’ and asstrong as it’s ever been with headline act Big BoyBloater (right), described by Jools Holland as “oneof the great blues men of our time”, joined by anarray of brilliant musicians including the legendaryLazy Lester performing with Dani Wilde.

Raising money for charityOrchestrating the festival is hard work, but a labourof love for Paul, festival organiser Jojo and the team atCafé René. But it’s all worth it – the crew delight in theincredibly positive effects the Festival brings in avariety of ways. First and foremost the festival givesterrific pleasure to all who attend – great entertainersperforming great music. It’s brilliant for Gloucester that thisevent has become a ‘must’ for music lovers – it really helps putour City ‘on the map’. Drawing thousands of visitors to Gloucesterover the week is welcome news for local hotels, pubs, restaurantsand other businesses who realise the benefits of the influx. And, ofequal importance, ‘much needed’ cash is raised for charity. This year the chosen charity is Macmillan Cancer Support. The crew are hopingto surpass last year’s total of just over £2,000 raised for Sue Ryder Care.Along with the musical entertainment visitors can enjoy BBQs, pig roast and a RealAle & Cider Festival too. Café René present an artist/band each week night prior tothe free legendary spectacle of the outdoor stage on Greyfriars Green bringing thefestival to a fantastic finalé!

4-WEEK BOOTCAMP PACKAGE2 Sessions/week • Nutrition Guidance

Sports Massage • Week’s Gym Membership‘At Home’ Workouts • Recipes and much more!

It’s probably fair to say that too many of us don’t invest enoughtime in two of the most important things in our lives – our ownbodies and health. Whether you want to get in shape for thesummer holiday or simply just to feel healthier, fitter and moreenergized, LM Get Lean Bootcamps can help!LM Get Lean Bootcamps are owned by Laura Milne, Personal

Trainer. She has been running bootcamps since last summer andthey have grown from strength to strength – helping the peopleof Gloucestershire get fit, lean, healthy and feeling great again.Don’t panic! While the term ‘bootcamp’ can provoke visions

of Sargent Majors bellowing at new recruits and pushing them tillthey collapse – LM Bootcamps are designed to encourage, adviseand support members in the achievement of their goals.

Since the success of the initial bootcamps, Laura has now set up camps inGloucester and Churchdown that are run by Sophie Atkin – a fellow Personal Trainer.

‘Seeing the results is great’Laura said: “Myself and Sophie love teaching the bootcamps – it is hard work but

great great fun. We build a great relationship with every Bootcamper and helpencourage them to achieve. The best thing is seeing their fat/inch loss and fitnessresults, and receiving texts and emails from the campers thanking us for getting themin shape.”Many people have benefited greatly from joining the ‘club’ losing up to 15lb and

12 inches in 4 weeks. HSBC worker Helen Dignum comments: “I’ve just completedmy first bootcamp and was a complete beginner. I was rather scared about joiningand being the most out of shape on the bootcamp, but I loved it and got stuck in witheverything. The result is I’m 10lb lighter and feeling amazing – after just four weeks”.You can see Helen’s video on Laura’s blog.

During the winter Laura has run the camps indoors, but nowsummer is here she has organised camps outside in Cheltenham,Bishop’s Cleeve, Winchcombe, Gloucester and Churchdown(early mornings, mid mornings and evenings) – the next onestarts week commencing 4th June.It is not all about exercise, Nutrition is key and Bootcampers

are provided with continued support via text, phone and email.Great emphasis is also put on each Bootcamper to support andencourage each other. It is a real team atmosphere and great fun.Laura said: “We work hard and have fun. Technique and safety isvital – you will be guided throughout. There is the LM Get LeanNutrition Formula to follow which guarantees results and you will

become the healthiest you have ever been, along with ‘At Home’ workouts, sportsmassage, gym membership, nutrition evaluations and much more.”

Money back guaranteeLaura knows the LM Get Lean formula works. Her confidence in the effectiveness

of how the variety of ‘tools’ used and the atmosphere of the sessions works isimpressive – she says: “if they don’t then you get your money back!”Camaraderie is such an important factor: “We have extra

weekend sessions and go for a cuppa after, and enter teamsinto races/walks, social and fundraising events. It is a great thingto be part of but, most of all, it gives you the results you want.”To reserve a place on a Gloucester or Churchdown

Now that the local elections are over, with littlechanging in practical terms as a result, we cannow concentrate on the events taking place inthe weeks and months ahead.

2012 is, of course, a very special year.Gloucester is getting its own taste of theOlympic spirit coming to the city on the 24thMay, with the Olympic Torch making its waythrough the city streets – taking in the Docks,Cathedral and Kingsholm. The disruptioncaused for a few hours by the associated roadclosures is, in my view, a price worth paying towitness a piece of history.

Our attentions with then turn to the Jubilee. Two days of events are planned in GloucesterPark on the 4th and 5th June, as well as manysmaller events taking place in communities. Abeacon will be lit on top of Robinswood Hill. Thecity centre streets will be decked with bunting. Our museums and the Guildhall will also bejoining in the Jubilee spirit. And we will beupholding the ancient tradition of presenting theMonarch with a Lamprey Pie on specialoccasions such as this.

Iʼm hoping that we will be able to present itwhen Gloucester gets its Jubilee Royal visit laterin June. I recall the last time we performed thistask – when I was Sheriff of Gloucester duringHer Majestyʼs Golden Jubilee. Then, as now, lampreys from the Severn were protectedspecies and we had to import them fromCanada where they are considered pests. Thistime, however, it seemed to capture theimagination of the media, with coverage in theDaily Mail and Daily Telegraph, BBC Televisionand even Canadian TV!

Iʼm told there is little prospect of The Queenactually eating our creation and itʼs probably justas well. But I do think itʼs important that we keepup these traditions.

The weather should now be milder and more settled (Perhaps!) So you can transplant courgettes, marrows, pumpkins and squashes that have beensown inside, or if you haven’t got any, sow directlyinto a prepared piece of ground. Outdoor tomatoplants can be put out now as well.

Feed your rhubarb by forking gently around it witha high-nitrogen fertiliser such as sulphate of ammonia. It doesn’t ask for muchand will supply you withrhubarb for pies andcrumbles galore!

Bindweed! Yes nowis a good time to tacklethe monster. Whenyou first see it appearingyou can put in abamboo cane and let ittwine around then pullthe cane up carefullywithout breaking thestem and stuff in a smallsandwich bag stillattached to the ground (I know it is sounding a bitcrazy but keep up….) then you can spray theglyphosate weedkiller into the bag carefully and knotthe top and leave on the ground until the bindweedshrivels up. This has the advantage of not drifting ontoother plants and being rainproof. If it has grown toocrazy to do this cut it off and then start from thebeginning with the cane etc.

Plant of the month has to be the rose. Everygarden should have roses in it. Even my tiny spacehas 9 in it. My favourite no nonsense rose forclimbing is the ‘Blush Noisette’ as it is really healthywith lovely small pale pink scented flowers that carryon from May till October and needs no pruning. I also love Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ which is smotheredwith the most deliciously scented pink flowers . Thepink colour is a wonderful foil for bright blue and asmy door is that colour I have a climbing ‘GertrudeJekyll’ outside. I would say however that it needs aboost after its first flush of flowers so give it somemore rose food in late June to keep it going. I alsogrow ‘morning glory’ (ipomoea) which is a climbingannual with glorious blue flowers to grow through itin the summer.

As always if you fancy a change in your garden, beit just a replanted border or a complete gardendesign do contact me by mobile or email (detailsbelow), or visit my website. Make this year a specialone for your garden!

Finding the rightLetting Agent

Take a little time to do your homework on any letting agentyou are considering. Look for a well known, wellestablished agent with a good reputation – they will nothave achieved their good name by default. Make sure theyhave been letting for many years so you know they areexperienced and knowledgeable, with the right systemsand procedures in place to deliver a professional serviceto their clients.

Don’t hesitate to seek recommendations from otherlandlord clients. Look particularly at whether the lettingagent has landlords who have been with them for manyyears – that in itself speaks volumes. Also considerwhether they have strong relationships with large localemployers who are often a key source of tenants.

There has been a lot of coverage in the media over theyears about agents without client money protectionschemes in place. A frightening number have either gonebust or disappeared with their clients’ money, leaving manyhundreds of landlords and tenants badly out of pocket, withno means of redress. The new SAFEagent scheme hasbeen set up to make the public aware of the importanceof only using an agent that protects its clients’ money.

Landlords and tenants often make decisions basedon cost but it is important to ensure you ask your agentfor details of the organisation they are regulated byand whether or not they are covered by a clientmoney protection scheme. All agentsregulated by ARLA/NFOPP, the LawSociety, NALS and RICS maintainand operate separate designatedclient accountswhere your moneyis held completelyseparate from theoperating funds ofthe firm. If the agent you are using cannot provide youwith the assurance of knowing they are covered by aclient money protection scheme the question youneed to ask is why not?

WE ALL know that being ‘energy efficient’ is great for both ourpockets and the environment but, until I spoke with RobinHeffter of local company Shackleton & Wintle, I didn’t realisewhat variety of ‘greener’ solutions are available.

Whether you’re replacing a current heating system or, in ourcase, deciding what would be the best way to provide hotwater and warmth where neither haspreviously existed – we’re in the final stagesof converting a barn – exploring the optionsis a must.

Robin’s expertise and guidance provedinvaluable. He fully explained the numerousoptions of renewable technologies tochoose from and what we could expect interms of ‘running costs‘ and ‘pay backperiods’. Shackleton & Wintle are one of ahandful of companies in the UK that areaccredited to supply, install and service thefull range of solutions on the market. Thefact that they’re local – based in Cheltenham– was a real bonus too.

Our ‘new build’ is rather out in the sticks,we didn’t have the luxury of mains gas, sothe choice was oil, bottled gas or electric.I didn’t like the idea of a dirty oil tank, nor did I want the hassleof continually topping up gas bottles, so we asked Robin moreabout electric air source heating.

Air source heat pumps work by converting the inherentenergy of the outside air into heat, creating the perfect roomtemperature and enough energy for the hot water system. Anair source heat pump is measured in Coefficient ofPerformance (CoP) which basically means for every kilowattof electricity put in, you multiply it to get four times the energyin the form of warm water. The temperature is lower than that

achieved by a domestic boiler and needs to bekept at the lower end of the scale to remainenergy effiicient.

Solar panels can also be added to provide atop-up of free energy. Due to the ‘Listed’ statusof our barn this was not an option, so wedecided a woodburning stove would be theideal boost of heat for the property and alsoprovide a focal point in our living area.

Being a bungalow we had underfloor heatinginstalled in every room, the only exceptionbeing under the kitchen units. All plumbingpipeworks were installed first, then a layer of

thick floor insulation was secured before the pipingwas laid according to the plan – close together in the living areaand spread further apart in the utility room where less heatwould be required. The heat pump is located on a concreteplinth on the outside wall of our property and an immersionheater was installed into the utility room to provide extra hotwater as necessary. Our bungalow has been well insulated tohelp keep our energy system operating at maximum efficiency.

The pipework may look like a complicated labyrinth but tookunder four hours to lay throughout the whole property. Thenext stage is a floor screed and, when fully dry, the heating willgradually be increased to prevent cracking before being readyfor tiling. One of the other benefits of employing Robin and histeam is that they also cover all apsects of ‘traditional’ plumbingand heating requirements. They’ll be back to install ourbathroom suite next!

Dear Readers,I do hope you're allwell. Six months into2012 and I have noidea where the timehas gone.

Firstly I would liketo thank all of youwho attended “Pawson Patrol” inGloucester Park onSaturday 12th May. Itwas a wonderful dayand it was great tomeet so manymembers of our community. My only complaint is thatmy puppy didn’t win the cutest puppy category, but Ihave found out what cars the judges drive so I shall bekeeping a close lookout for them! :-)

Our first weekend this month will be a busy one- the Queen's Jubilee is a time to celebrate and I amsure the extra bank holidays will be utilised by you allto have a good time. Can I please ask though that youare all responsible in your celebrations as I know partiesare going to be starting early in the morning and lastingall day. My teams are going to be busy enough as it isand if you have twelve hours to drink alcohol perhapsyou don’t have to drink to excess in the first hour.

I know I mentioned home security in my last fewarticles but I have to mention it again so hopefully youwon’t think I am beginning to sound too boring.

My team have recently carried out a lengthyoperation predominately targeting burglars acrossour city, which resulted in numerous interventions beingcarried out last month. My teams have recovered vastsamounts of property including iPads, iPhones, Xboxes,PS3's, laptop computers etc etc. You would beamazed at the amount of work that is being carried outnow to try and identify the owners. The majority ofall this property had no markings on it and when wehave spoken to possible losers, they had no idea of anyserial numbers etc.

Can I please ask you all that if you own any high valueelectrical items you record the serial numbers and ifpossible place some sort of security markings on them. This can be as simple as your postcode written on withan invisible U.V viewable pen.

No one wants to be a victim of crime, but if you arethen you would wish that your property is returnedto you and the criminal is prosecuted. We need yourhelp in ensuring this can happen.
