Jumping for Joy

I stood there on the shore of Lake Champlain with the warm sun eating down on

m! ack" the cool #ermont ree$e lowing through m! hair" and the waves flowing

smoothl! into the rocks on shore% Brad!" the nine&!ear&old golden retriever" waited

patientl! on m! left side" resting his aged legs" and Case!" the one&!ear&old golden

retriever" 'umped up and down" e(pending his !outhful energ! and panting with

e(citement over the sticks in m! hand%

I walked down the wooden planked dock" as Brad! trotted ne(t to me contentl!"

and Case! attacked me and niled at m! fingers tr!ing to snatch the stick out of m!

hand% )fter lots of twisting" turning" and dodging in protection of the sticks" I made it to

the end of the dock with oth dogs once again at m! side% I could hear the heav!

reathing of Case! in anticipation of getting the stick all to himself% I looked into the

water" picked a spot aout *+ feet from the end of the dock" and tossed oth sticks in

with a ,-L),H% I watched as Brad! dug his nails into the last wooden plank and flung

himself off of the end of the dock" while Case! stood tensel! at the end" !earning to

retrieve the pri$e" ut lacking the courage to dive in% ,o rather than 'umping" Case!

turned and olted all the wa! ack to shore" pranced into the water" swam out to get his

stick and raced ack to me for the ne(t throw%

I would not e deterred% I walked out to the end of the dock" threw oth sticks"

and again watched as Brad! 'umped" and Case! ran" to get the sticks% )nd at thatmoment I reali$ed m! goal for the summer. to teach Case! how to 'ump off the dock%

How hard could it e/ 0his is the same dog who pounces from couch to couch in the

living room with ease while pla!ing around with Brad!%

0he da!s of summer passed" and I continued m! 1uest to get that energetic

animal to 'ump into the water% )nd each da!" Case! happil! ran around the dock and

into the water" ut could never muster the courage to 'ump in% 2ver and over again

Case! would stand at the edge of the dock" whining as Brad! 'umped in% I could tell he

longed to fl! like his est friend" ut each time he would turn and run" until one da!"

when ever!thing changed%

0hat da!" I found two tennis alls while cleaning out m! car and headed down to

the dock% )s usual" Case! was going asolutel! onkers over the tennis alls in m!

hands as I approached% His ears flopped in ever! direction" he arked and howled like

a wolf" and he 'umped up" resting his paws on m! arms% He was osessed3 ,o to

compete with his enormous amount of energ!" rather than walking to the dock" I ran%

,ure enough Case! ran after me" nipping at m! ankles as I took each step% Brad!" the

old man" lagged ehind" ut I knew he would catch up to 'ump in and retrieve his all%

)s I neared the dock with Case! on m! tail" I launched the tennis all into the

water% )lmost as if it were a different dog chasing that eloved tennis all" Case! didn4t

even stop to think twice% He continued his sprint" each paw making a B)NG as it made

contact with the wooden planks" all the wa! to the end of the dock" the place where he

had stood so man! times efore wanting to 'ump in% 0he moment of truth%%% Case! took

flight off of that last plank and launched his four legged od! into the depths of Lake

Champlain% He floated through the air like 5ordan in the dunk contest" flapped his paws

ack and forth as if tr!ing to run across the air and landed ten feet from the end of the

dock" directl! on top of the tennis all%

)s Case! swam in circles tr!ing to find the all eneath him" m! smile spread

from ear to ear and I roke out into pure laughter% I was successful" ut that wasn4t

what made me urst out% I laughed at the courage and 'o! on his smiling Golden face"

all in mouth" as he swam through the water ack to shore% 0he pup had finall! learned

to 'ump3 )nd for the rest of the summer" Case! was sure to put a smile on the face and

a chuckle in the heart of an!one who watched as he soared through the air and flew intothe water to retrieve his pri$ed tennis all%
