NEW ACTIVITIES

This year we have extended our activities to include:

HOSPITAL FOR NEURODISABILITY IN PUTNEY, the Jumbulance took a party of adults with profound and complex disabilities for a day outing to Longleat

in May.

WOMAD In July the Midi Jumbulance took a group of young adults with life-shortening conditions from Helen & Douglas House in Oxford to the

WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) Festival.

PARALYMPIC HANDCYCLISTS The Midi Jumbulance will be transporting for the first time competitors from Europe to the Kent International Para

ACORN’S HOSPICE - The Midi Jumbulance took a group of children from the Acorn’s Hospice in Birmingham to the Calvert Trust in Devon for a long

weekend.

MOBILITY ROADSHOW PETERBOROUGH, 1-3 JULY 2010 Once again we were represented at the roadshow be-ing held this year at Peterborough at which we had our dedicated stand manned by the Trustees and J1 adjacent

to the entrance for visitors to see in detail. DISABILITY NORTH EXHIBITION, 20-21 OCTOBER 2010 For the first time this year we shall be exhibiting at the

Disability North Exhibition being held at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle upon Tyne. J1 will be available to view and our stand will be manned by the Trustees and group leaders from the region.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GORDON JACKSON

Gordon Jackson was chosen as Acting Father for this year’s Hawick Common Riding on the weekend of 10-12 June. This was the first of the Border festivals and celebrates both the capture of an English Flag in 1514 by the youth of Hawick at a place called Hornshole and the ancient custom of riding the marches or boundaries of the common land. This is a very big deal for everyone in Hawick. Everyone who knows Gordon is extremely proud and pleased that he has been asked to do the job, and those who don’t know him by name refer to him as the Jumbulance Man!.

DORSET GROUP

group after Dec Turner gave a talk on the history of

the Jumbulance and the people who travel. As well

as the money raised it is hoped that it will encourage

some new young volunteers.

CLOSURE OF MERLYN HOUSE, SOUTHAMPTON

Sadly, Merlyn House in Southampton who have been using the Jumbulance for many years is having to close.

In June they had their last trip to Henley-on-Thames and before the day Bobbie Smith, chairman of Friends of

Merlyn House wrote to give us the sad news.

“It will be a sad goodbye to the Jumbulance. The Friends would like to thank the Trust for all the help and

support they have given to us over the years. We have so enjoyed using your vehicles and meeting your excellent

drivers”

VOLUNTEER HELPERS

It has been said before and it is worth saying again, none of the Jumbulance holidays would be possible without the help of all the many carers who accompany the VIPs, voluntarily giving of their own holiday

entitlement and paying for themselves, and not forgetting all those left behind who work so hard to raise money locally for the groups and help with the organisation and planning.

Page 4 TRIP REPORTS

Early in the New Year, we made contact and gathered together four new wheelchair dancers and three standing partners, to form a new club for the school leavers. In less than two months we managed to train the standing partners from scratch, set up four couples for the competition, organise finance and book the transport. Our thanks to Southend on Sea Borough Connexions, Kingsdown School and a private charity for funding. There was great excitement when the new Jumbulance arrived. A super coach with all modern conveniences for people with disabilities. Our drivers, Brendan and Paul soon got us organised and on our way. As a registered ambulance we were first onto the train again and there was a lot of praise for the skills in getting the very large coach onto the train in one manoeuvre. We had normal delays at Antwerp but with the extra space, super toilet and cooking facilities on the new coach, we were able to make a through journey to Cuijk with only short stops for driver changes. Margaret was there to meet us and advise us that she had organised a large table for the evening meal, so we went straight to dinner, before unloading the coach. Later, it was all hands on to unload before settling down to enjoy the comforts of the hotel. Each of the competition days went well. Because we were representing Great Britain, different couples had the honour of escorting the Union Flag each day, at the opening flag parades. We entered three events each day with all couples reaching the semi finals and two couples reaching the finals. James Ireland and Paige Tyrrell were outright gold winners each day in the Debutante Combi Class, having been streamed directly through to the semi finals, on each occasion. We entered 6 events and returned with a total of 4 gold and 4 bronze medals In the evenings we celebrated the success and congratulations of each day, and socialised in the company of competitors from 18 countries. It was said that some were up until 2 am on the morning that we left. Probably true, because we had a very quick and quiet run home. We arrived back at the school on time,displaying our tro-phies, with wonderful memories, souvenirs and photos to remind us of another successful project. These sort of trips depend so much on the support of teachers, parents and alike. A special thank you to Lynn who acted as carer to the young people and mother to us all and to Brendan and Paul who have become friends as well as drivers, bell boys, porters and entertainers. Kingsdown School—Holland 2-5 April 2010

I went to Holland for a wheelchair dance competition of the Easter weekend and the transport provided was a Jumbulance. This was my first time travelling by a Jumbulance and being on a coach for an extremely long time. The facilities were excellent, our drivers Brendan and Paul were patient and understanding which helped me feel calm and safe when I was transferring on and off the Jumbulance. GUERNSEY GROUP TO BLACKPOOL, May 2010

The Guernsey Group outside the closed down café opposite the ‘Bond Hotel’ in Blackpool On the Ferry from Lakeside to Bowness-on-Windermere. Our best day out!!

The group travelled by ferry from Guernsey where they boarded the Jumbulance up to Blackpool. They had many trips out including a visit to Blackpool Tower, Louis Tussauds Waxworks, Sea Life Centre, an evening with “Hi-De-Hi” at the Grand Theatre Blackpool, Tatton Park, Blackpool Zoo, the Lake District and an evening show “Funny Girls”. “Zoe gave us some ideas of what to do and where to go. This included helping us with our trip to the Lake District where after a ride on a steam train, the group took a boat from Lakeside to Bowness. Zoe took us on a tour around the area then we had a pub supper alongside

This is a family run business providing 8 self catering cottages designed to accommodate the disabled and their family and friends to ensure a holiday for all. We have been using the Jumbulance since 2006, on each occasion we found the coach well equipped especially hot drink facilities and on board disabled toilet and for the residents that were unable to transfer to a normal coach seat their wheelchairs were clamped to the coach floor. For most residents that are unable to travel out with their fam-ily, this is such a special occasion and they all have a fantastic time, without the facility provided by the Jumbulance Trust this would not be possible. From the time the coach arrives to the end of the day, the driver is kind and courte-ous to us and nothing is too much trouble.
