A LETTER FROM OUR ELDER ANNE GILMORE

So here we are, half-way through 2019! “What? Already?” I hear you say. “Where have 6 months gone?” At the start of each year much is made of making resolutions to improve ourselves /our lives. Such plans rarely last till the end of January. We continue with all that we usually do, the daily routine. It is that routine that makes the day’s weeks and months fly by. Now as we approach “The Summer Holidays” when routine stops to a large extent.....schools, colleges, universities close and leisure classes cease, we go on holiday. The long summer days stretch ahead of us.......... This is when we can be still and take time to appraise what we do and what is going on around us. Let us take this summer to pray for guidance and “ to listen for the word of the Lord”, in relation to the church, regarding outreach and the development and for ourselves, to find out what we are being called to do/how we are being called to act. Five years ago Chris Evans was driving towards Virginia Water (on his daily commute) when a voice ‘God’ instructed him to pull into the car park and try to run round the lake. He obeyed, he struggled to do the run having to stop many times. He was back the next day and the next and gradually he improved and eventually was doing fun runs then marathons! He now inspires others to be active and fitter. All because he heard and obeyed! The elders are currently looking at four booklets which guide us to look at how the way we present ourselves affects the way we are seen by the community around us.......What are we saying about ourselves? Church from the inside.....Welcome, news sheets, magazine Church from the outside ...... Noticeboards, Displays, Advertising, Church on line ....................... Social media Church on line ........................Websites Through reading these booklets we need to listen for God’s word and respond. So go and enjoy “Those lazy crazy days of summer” and take the time “to stand beneath the bough and stare as long as sheep or cow” The Lord be with you. Anne 3

CHRISTIAN AID UPDATE

Many, many thanks to all who volunteered to collect on behalf of Abbey Hill Church. Despite the occasional grumpy householder (!) we raised £927.46. Kenilworth as a whole raised £10,857.00 which is a magnificent total, so never mind the ‘grumpies’, a big WELL DONE to everyone! Thanks again, you are all superstars! John Nichols

A story of Bravery and Faith

People in the jungles of Papua New Guinea rely very much on MAF. Before any flight 3 questions are asked, is the situation life-threatening, how long before the patient arrives at the airstrip, and what’s the weather like? One time the message was “Critical in Busilmin. Cannot get through to them on radio. Telefomin weather is dark.” The pilot was flying 9 patients to hospital when he received this message. After dropping off his patients, he refuelled and set off but the weather got worse. What was even worse as that the nearest hospital to Busilmin is in Telefomin and it was already raining heavily there. In order to navigate to Busilmin the pilot needed to see the river for guidance but vast rain clouds made this impossible. The pilot sent up a quick prayer and a small opening in the clouds revealed the river below. The airstrip at Busilmin is class D, one of the most difficult even on a dry sunny day and it was now raining heavily. This made the pilot reassess the risks of landing. Breaking through the rain the pilot had just enough visibility through the propeller to continue his approach and he made a bumpy landing on the side of the mountain. The top of this airstrip is a cul-de-sac into a valley wall so how to get out later was in the pilot’s mind. To add to the concern there was no one to be seen. It was an empty airstrip. Another prayer! Soon people began to appear and the first to greet him was the schoolmaster who said “Please wait. He will come. He will come!” Next the village leader said “Thank you for coming you have saved this boy’s life. Bless you.” The boy was 18 years old and had fallen into a fire two days ago – breaking his fall with both hands and also burning his leg terribly on the flames and hot coals. Without immediate help such injuries often lead to disfigurement or even death because open wounds are in constant danger of infection especially in the jungle. After a further 30 minutes 4 men appeared carrying a stretcher. They were bathed in sweat but they didn’t break pace. The pain on the boy’s face was beyond words as was the look in his mother’s eyes. As the boy was settled into the plane the pilot noticed the 4 stretcher-bearers laid on the grass their chests heaving. They had collapsed from sheer physical exhaustion. The rest of the day was relatively uneventful. On take-off the valley wall was cleared and they eventually reached Telefomin where the MAF ground staff were waiting to get the boy to hospital. The pilot thought of that initial decision to make an extra effort to save a life and he thanked God for His amazing grace. MAF supporters mean that such rescues can be carried out without any cost to these needy patients. Pray for the work of the MAF in 27 countries, saving lives by transporting people and goods where necessary in remote and dangerous areas. Winnie

Eco Matters

All the recent concerns and protests about “climate change” and plastics started a ball which is gathering speed. Manufacturers are working to reduce, reimagine packaging. The flat wine company are using flat wine bottles! These could be seen on supermarket shelves before long as they take up less space, so more in a case, transport costs are reduced. Is this a way forward........customers will have to change their perceptions. As mentioned last month the bug world is in dire straits and we are being urged to provide better conditions in our gardens for insects of all kinds to thrive. It is suggested that lawns are allowed to grow long and let the daisies, dandelions lions etc. grow. To grow veg in a specific “plot” is not always needed, they can be grown amongst the flowers. Runner beans were originally grown for their flowers. People plant marigolds in the veg garden toward off various predatory insects. Personally I am trying to be more relaxed about certain “weeds” that proliferate in our garden and self- seeding annuals such as forget me knots, just removing those which impinge on the growth of “garden plants”. So what else can we do to help??? buy fair trade goods

• Buy locally, support the high street

• Take a reusable cup when going for a coffee from places that only use disposable ones

• Buy seasonal fruit and vegetables

• Consider air miles if buying produce from over seas

• Look out for the red tractor mark.

• Select the least packaged items

PS - As I write there is growing concern about the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium which has decimated the olive trees in Italy, France and Spain and has been discovered near Oporto in Portugal. European Authorities have branded it as “one of the most harmful pathogenic bacteria worldwide”. It can affect 563 species of plants. Scientists want all sightings of cuckoo spit to be reported to build up a distribution map to make contingency plans should the bacterium appear in the UK. “The 12 Faces of Hope”

Following on from the above article an exhibition on “The 12 Faces of Hope” will hosted by the church of Saturday 27th July (10am to 4pm) and Sunday 28th July (12.30pm- 3pm).

The URC has invited its congregations to display a series of photographs and stories expressing hope for peace and justice in Israel and Palestine.

Further details to follow from Winnie.

The Six-Day War – A Personal Experience – Winnie Tawil

Susan was born in December 1966 and I was planning to visit my

parents in Port Glasgow at the end of June 1967 to let them meet

their first grandchild. I had several friends who worked in the British

Consulate and in early May 1967 there were rumours of trouble

looming.

By about the 20th May the wives and children were being advised to

plan to leave and I was advised to do likewise so I decided to travel

sooner than I had planned. On the evening of the 24th May Ibrahim

came in and said he was going to come with me as there was so

much uncertainty about how things were progressing and he worried

about me travelling with a 5-month-old baby with so much army build

up on the roads. He had managed to get a Visa in 2 hours instead of

2 weeks as the British Consul was one of our social friends.

So, early on the morning of the 25th May 1967 we set off in a hired

car driven by one of his many friends, an ancient VW beetle instead

of the usual American limousine we were used to, with one suitcase!

This was in order to make us look less conspicuous on the road to

Amman. We passed many army trucks on the road heading to

Jerusalem. At Amman Airport a chartered plane was situated on a

remote part of the airport for us British and Americans leaving. We

flew to Beirut where we got on scheduled flights to various

destinations.

I do not recall anything of that journey as I seem to have blocked out

that and other traumatic events from my mind. I must have managed

to get a flight to Glasgow in London when we arrived as the next

thing I remember is sitting in the back of my father's car beside my

mother with Susan on my knee and after that is blank, vaguely being

aware of the news about the War and wondering what had happened

to our home and all the things I had left behind. I do remember

Ibrahim being very upset and barely talking.

In October I got a passport for Israel only and went back to

Jerusalem to pack up the house as by that time it was obvious that

no males of military age who had left were going to be allowed back

into Jerusalem. Whether Ibrahim regretted his decision to come with

me to Scotland I never ever found out. I just know he eventually

decided not to go back illegally over the border from Jordan with one

of his friends who did just that leaving his wife and children in

England.

I packed up what I could and sold the furniture to anyone who would

pay. Some family members got things for nothing. I made just

enough money from the sale to pay for my possessions to go by sea

from Beirut. I got on the plane to return to Scotland literally without a

halfpenny to my name and no means to pay for anything on route. I

never ever want to be in that situation again. We had no money so if

we had not had my parents, we would have been like so many of

today's refugees, so in a way I understand their plight.

I could tell you more of our trials but that is another story. I only want

to add that the difference in Ibrahim's situation and mine could not be

different. I was totally accepted as a foreign Christian in a Muslim

country by Muslim neighbours, shopkeepers etc., yet in England in

the 1970s and in a great deal of Scotland then people ignored

Ibrahim or were decidedly hostile to him even if he was a Christian in

a so-called Christian country. The only church which made him feel

welcome was Abbey Hill and he entered into some of the social

events quite willingly and happily.

8th Kenilworth Guides 40th Birthday

Our Guide Company, 8th Kenilworth, recently celebrated their 40th birthday. The company was started in 1979 by Carolyn Sims, a member of our church for many years until she moved away. I joined her in 1982, took over as leader in 1989 and continued to lead the Company until 2004. We had many wonderful camps, youth hostel trips, swimming galas, sleepovers (or no sleep!) in the church hall, trips, camp fires and just lots of fun! Tracey McNamara took over from me in 2004 and the Company is still thriving due to her hard work. Being the Guide Leader takes a lot of time apart from the Friday evening meeting, with planning activities, training and trips/camps. Tracey is supported by a group of enthusiastic leaders, some of whom have just carried on helping after leaving guides as they enjoy it so much. They all obviously give a lot of their time and the guides are lucky to have them as leaders. The celebratory evening was well planned with guides manning stalls to raise money for Guide Dogs. We then took part in activities and found out how they are working towards the new badge syllabus. Some former guides, now parents of guides themselves attended and the evening brought back happy memories for all. It was quite a nostalgic evening and lovely to see all these young people having fun and working together. Let’s hope they have another party in another 40 years! Alison Pointon
