THE CARILLON Page 1 JULY/AUGUST 2014 COMING HOME to Hampton Roads From our new Pastor - Luis "Ned" Alderman The morning after I got the call about coming to Epworth, I woke up at 3:54 a.m. and could not get back to sleep. I was that happy to know that I was coming back home, to Hampton Roads, where I’ve spent most of my life. I was born in Cumberland, Md., May 9, 1962, right after my dad went active-duty as a Navy signalman. His career brought us to Norfolk in 1964, and kept him here for most of the rest of his life, minus three years of recruiting duty in Steubenville, Ohio. I went to kindergarten and public schools in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, to Virginia Wesleyan College, and worked at Port Folio Magazine for 10 years before leaving for seminary in 1996. I also lived in Virginia Beach 2007-2012, while stationed at the Surface Force Ministry Center in Norfolk, and completing an internship and residency in clinical pastoral education at the VA Medical Center in Hampton after leaving active duty. I served the Cheriton Charge on the Eastern Shore for four years before going on active duty as a chaplain, and briefly served Oak Grove UMC in Melfa before being appointed to Central UMC in Clifton Forge, where I’ve served for the last 18 months. I didn’t think I’d be leaving Clifton Forge so soon, but my DS and the cabinet think I am a good match for Epworth. I’m excited to be back at a church that has a day school, as does New World UMC in Garland, Tx., where I did my internship the last year of seminary at Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas. My mentor at New World said that the congregation appreciated my gifts for education and pastoral care, and I guess that that’s true of my ministry, although I’ve gotten a lot out of worship every place from Marine Corps Base Camp Fuji, Japan, to Camp Bucca, Iraq, and Clifton Forge. All right, that’s enough about me – except for one more thing, I go by Ned. I look forward to our getting to know each other, and to being part of the mission, vision, and service to Jesus Christ at Epworth. Grace and peace, Ned Alderman P.S. I wanted to address visitation here: I'm all for it, and do so by appointment, unless it's in case of an emergency. If you'd like for me to visit you at home, please let me know, and we'll set a time and date. COMING HOME to Hampton Roads

From our new Pastor - Luis "Ned" Alderman

The morning after I got the call about coming to Epworth, I woke up at

3:54 a.m. and could not get back to sleep. I was that happy to know that I

was coming back home, to Hampton Roads, where I’ve spent most of my

life. I was born in Cumberland, Md., May 9, 1962, right after my dad went

active-duty as a Navy signalman. His career brought us to Norfolk in 1964,

and kept him here for most of the rest of his life, minus three years of

recruiting duty in Steubenville, Ohio. I went to kindergarten and public

schools in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, to Virginia Wesleyan College, and

worked at Port Folio Magazine for 10 years before leaving for seminary in

1996. I also lived in Virginia Beach 2007-2012, while stationed at the

Surface Force Ministry Center in Norfolk, and completing an internship and

residency in clinical pastoral education at the VA Medical Center in

Hampton after leaving active duty. I served the Cheriton Charge on the

Eastern Shore for four years before going on active duty as a chaplain, and

briefly served Oak Grove UMC in Melfa before being appointed to Central

UMC in Clifton Forge, where I’ve served for the last 18 months. I didn’t

think I’d be leaving Clifton Forge so soon, but my DS and the cabinet think I

am a good match for Epworth.

I’m excited to be back at a church that has a day school, as does New

World UMC in Garland, Tx., where I did my internship the last year of

seminary at Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas. My mentor at

New World said that the congregation appreciated my gifts for education and

pastoral care, and I guess that that’s true of my ministry, although I’ve gotten

a lot out of worship every place from Marine Corps Base Camp Fuji, Japan,

to Camp Bucca, Iraq, and Clifton Forge.

All right, that’s enough about me – except for one more thing, I go by

Ned. I look forward to our getting to know each other, and to being part of

the mission, vision, and service to Jesus Christ at Epworth.

Grace and peace,

Ned Alderman

P.S. I wanted to address visitation here: I'm all for it, and do so by appointment, unless

it's in case of an emergency. If you'd like for me to visit you at home, please let me

know, and we'll set a time and date.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC MINISTER

PRAYER AND POETRY Hymn #529 is a great statement of faith in the “Strength in Tribulation” section of the 1989 edition of The United Methodist Hymnal. Theologian-poets have suggested it is a new experience to see the text apart from the music for a different ‘flow’ of meaning. “How Firm a Foundation” (#529) is a powerful hymn to be read aloud, standing in a large space to hear the thoughts resound as they unfold in continuity, speaking to your soul. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he has said, To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie, My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no never forsake.”

Inspiration for this hymn comes from 2 Timothy 2:19, Hebrews 13:5, Isaiah 43:1-2, if you wish to connect with its source. Reading the hymn will enrich your next experience singing it within the congregation in worship.

Read your hymnal today. Jean Thiel

We have continued to work on projects that we feel serve our God.

God told us in the first commandment that we were to love Him. How does

that fit in with what we are doing at Epworth? If we love God, He expects us to

love others. You know that piece about loving others...your neighbor as yourself. From Jesus'

teaching, we know our neighbors are everyone...even our enemies. From reading Rev. Wayne

Lavender’s book, “Counting the Ants While the Elephants March By” you clearly get his message

to us about how we spend so much time arguing about the little things ie...the color we are going to

paint a room, music selections, etc. that we miss out on what is truly important...loving others.

Projects we did in May and June:

• Looking for a ride to church for Ann Gatling. With 4 volunteers, it would be one Sunday a month.

Please pray about this and see if you might be one of the 4.

• Gave each woman and man a carnation for Mother’s/Father’s Day

• Updated the Bulletin Board in the Social Hall...will be doing the one outside of the Crusader Room

soon. Please check out the bulletin boards to see what is going on.

• Lenten collection - We collected a total of $232.00 for the Society of St. Andrews.

• Collected 20 sewing kits for UMCOR and 30 cans 4 Conference, which were delivered at the Virginia

Annual Conference in Hampton.

• A group of 10 went to visit the Botanical Gardens April 26th, and had lunch at the Azalea Inn.

Our ongoing projects:

• Recycling labels, cans, and ink cartridges-a total of $100 has been collected for office supplies. More

importantly, it is a way to help keep God’s World healthier.

•Mobile Meals...Jeanne Tomlinson volunteered to serve as a substitute when needed. Thanks for that,

Jeanne. This will help when one of our current drivers cannot make it. Right now we have 4 cars going

for Mobile Meals. In May we were able to hold our own and deliver all our routes.

•Missing Angels...Our children are making Happy Summer cards for our Shut ins right now. We will

ask our congregation to take a card and deliver it to the missing angel they would like to visit. Every

time we visit or send a card/plant our missing angels call to thank us. It takes such a short time and it

means so much to them...another way to serve. Thanks for doing these.

Projects that you will soon hear about:

• This July we will provide an opportunity for our church and Day School to give to a children’s camp

called All God’s Children. This is a special camp in that it is for the children of incarcerated parents.

Stay tuned for further information how you can help children truly in need.

• We will be doing a Change the World Day in the Fall. It will be led by Karen Ward and we will need

volunteers. This is a project where one can experience truly being the hands of God.

Our committee is always open to suggestions regarding how to serve.

The Day School of Epworth UMC is such a great place to be.

The director, staff, and children are great spirit lifters. Children truly can teach us many lessons if we

just spend a little time chatting with them and listening. Have you done that lately? If you haven’t, I would

encourage you to call Kathy Huntley and see if there is a way you can visit or volunteer.

Now that it is summer EDS has a wonderful agenda for the children. Please consider going over and

visiting. You will be welcomed...the main thing to do is to call so they will know you are coming and what

you are interested in seeing or doing. Below is what is coming up this summer:
