Bernard AllisonLet It Go

Ruf Records 2018

I have nothing but the highest of praise for Bernard Allison’s latest album Let it Go. It’s a delightful blend of blues, funk and soul. With this release, Bernard returns to Ruf Records, the label Thomas Ruf created for his father, the late great bluesman Luther Allison in 1994. Bernard’s band is wonderfully tight and consists of rhythm guitarist John T. McGhee, bassist George Moye, and drummer Mario Dawson. Recorded by the legendary music producer, Jim Gaines, the album was recorded at Bessie Blue Studio in Stantonville, Tennessee.

From the beginning, I’m hooked by the spir-ited rhythm and bouncy groove on “Cruisin for a Bluesin”. It wonderfully ignites into a smoking guitar performance. His soulful vocals on title track “Let it Go” are suave and soulful. This is such a terrific song. There’s a definitely a bit of the P-Funk influence on the front end of “Night Train”. I love the bassline Moye throws down as Bernard takes this fresh, funky track to the next level with his guitar mastery. Covered and topped with Dawson’s dynamic drumming, this is one phenomenal listen.

Bernard charmingly takes on Brook Benton’s 1960 hit single “Kiddio”, enlisting the magnifi-cent Jose Ned James on sax. For a fabulous finale, the listener is treated to two wonderful covers originally recorded by his father, Luther. First served is the delicious slow-cooked blues of “You’re Gonna Need Me”, from the 1982 al-bum South Side Safari. Then for a captivating closer, Bernard beautifully performs “Castle”, from Luther’s 1994 album Hand Me Down My Moonshine.

Over the years, Bernard Allison has continued to push the envelope in his songwriting and art-istry, and that certainly shows in Let it Go.

Formed in late 1997, Blue Train was Shane Johnson on guitars, Tony Carton on drums, “Detroit” Larry Davison on harmonica,

and John Resch on vocals and electric bass.Shane Johnson’s Blue Train first came on the

local scene by winning the Quad Cities segment of the Iowa Blues Challenge, and just missing 1st place at the state level in Des Moines. The lo-cal win earned them their first appearance at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, where they released and all original eight song cassette that sold out before they left the stage.

The following year they released their first full length CD, which was voted best locally produced CD, and they were also voted best local blues band. Blue Train went on to win both the local and state blues competition, earning a spot at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennes-see.

Then just over a year old, the band chartered a bus to Memphis and took over 70 of their fans with them to the international competition, where they made it into the finals, and placed in the top 8 out of over 80 bands from around the world.

On the heels of these successes, they were invited to play many regional shows and festivals, sharing the stage with such blues luminaries as Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Son Seals, and Lonnie Brooks.

Having sold over 2500 copies of their original CD, Blue Train released their second CD in 2000, and again, was voted best locally produced CD.

After some personnel changes, Shane Johnson’s Blue Train continued on into the mid 2000s before disbanding. After several years apart, Blue Train reunited with Shane Johnson, now based in Austin, Texas, to play the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival and the Des Moines Winter Blues Festival. The band has added Kansas City based harmonica player, Chris Ryan, for their appearance at Czech Village Blues.

Music fans are in for a real treat when the Ruf Records Blues Caravan

2018 arrives at the second annual Czech Village Blues festival Satur-day, August 11. The lineup for this year’s installment of the Blues Cara-van features blues music heavy hit-ters Mike Zito, Bernard Allison and a little stick of dynamite guitar sling-er named Vanja Sky. Quad Cities blues rockers Shane Johnson’s Blue Train make a rare return to Cedar Rapids for the event, which opens with Waterloo’s Tim&TheTrutones.

Each year since 2005 German based Ruf Records has sent three of their talented performers out on a world tour called Blues Caravan. The label, whose motto is “Where Blues Crosses Over” received the prestigious Keepin’ the Blues Alive Award from the Memphis based Blues Foundation in 2007. Ruf Re-cords was created in 1994 by blues great Luther Allison’s then manager Thomas Ruf, to promote Allison’s career.

It’s a very good time to be blues musician Mike Zito. The Nederland Texas bandleader, guitarist and singer songwriter received the Blues Foundation’s award for Rock Blues Artist of the Year at their 39th An-nual Blues Music Awards on May 10. The following day Zito’s new record First Class Life debuted at number one in Billboard’s Top Blues Album category. The cofounder of the supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood has truly hit his stride as a solo artist.

Bernard Allison earned his chops playing early on with Chicago’s “Queen of the Blues” Koko Taylor and his legendary father Luther Al-lison. Allison is a Bluesblast award

nominee for Contemporary Blues Album 2018 for his new release Let It Go. The recording’s party grooves and funky blues reached number two on the Billboard Music Blues charts and hit number one on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Blues Rock Album Charts. Allison’s music subtly moves between blues music styles and is genre bending, proving his status as blues funk master.

Ruf Records newest discovery Vanja Sky is from the Croatia capital of Zagreb. A pastry chef turned blues singer and guitarist, Sky picked up the guitar just six years ago. Her debut album Bad Penny is modern electric blues with a straightforward style, named after a Rory Gallagher song that she covers on the record. Sky’s guitar influences include Stevie Ray Vaughn and Albert King, with her style compared to Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Low Down and Dirty from the new record is one of the recordings highlights, a triple threat featuring Mike Zito and Bernard Al-lison. The rollicking Hard Working Woman is guaranteed to get everyone up on their feet.

Czech Village Blues features a re-turn of the Quad Cities popular blues rock band Shane Johnson’s Blue Train. Johnson spends the majority of his time touring the world supporting the rock band Imagine Dragons. Shane still finds the time to get together with his longtime friends and bandmates, John Resch and Tony Carton. The Czech Village Blues performance will feature a new harmonica player from Kansas City, Chris Ryan. The festival’s opener is the Waterloo power trio blues band Tim&TheTrutones, with Tim Wagoner’s guitar and vocals, Paul Ferguson’s bass and vocals, with Corey Clark on the drums.

The Linn County Blues Society teams up again with the Friends of Czech Village for the second an-nual Czech Village Blues. Friends of Czech Village is dedicated to raising funds for and reconstructing the Riverside Roundhouse building in Czech Village. Once rebuilt, the facility will be a venue for farmer’s markets, recreational activities, festi-vals, social occasions and more. The Linn County Blues Society is dedi-cated to the preservation, promotion and perpetuation of blues music in Eastern Iowa, providing charitable contributions to other community organizations.

Tickets are only $15 in advance, $20 at the gate. 100 VIP tickets will be available for $80, featuring a ca-tered meal, two beverages of choice and reserved seating in front of the stage. The gate opens at 4pm, with the music starting at 5pm. The main entrance will be located at the inter-section of 16th Avenue SW and A Street. Additional details are avail-able at czechvillagefriends.com.

So, with the release of Buddy Guy’s new CD titled “The Blues Is Alive And Well”, I’m guess-

ing that the rest of the genre’s artists are pretty much thinking “Oh God, there go five or six categories in any upcom-ing blues awards programs right out the window”. And from what I just heard, that should be a very legitimate concern. With all of the great music Buddy has put out over the last six or so decades, you might think it would be going out on a limb by saying that this could be some of his best work ever, but you can go ahead and put me on that limb.

On “The Blues Is Alive And Well”, Buddy Guy - on guitar and vocals - is joined by: Tom Hambridge, the albums’ producer, on drums, percussion and background vocals; Rob McNelley on rhythm and slide guitar; Kevin McK-endree on keyboards; Willie Weeks and Tommy MacDonald on bass; Emil Jus-tian on harmonica; The Muscle Shoals Horns which include: Charles Rose on trombone and horn arrangements, Steve Herrman on trumpet, Doug Moffet on tenor sax and Jim Hoke on baritone sax; and Regina McCrary, Ann McCrary and Rachel Hambridge on background vocals. Special guests on the album include a few names you may just be familiar with: Keith Richards and Jeff Beck on guitar; James Bay on guitar and vocals; and Mick Jagger on harmonica. With Buddy and Tom having penned and/or collaborated on them, fourteen of the disc’s tracks are originals with the fifteenth being a Sonny Boy Williamson cover.

The disc opens with a slow, soulful ballad that could actually be consid-ered a prayer. Unlike Robert Johnson, who made that infamous deal with the Devil, Buddy is trying to make his own deal with the Lord. Realizing he’s in the twilight of his life, Buddy appears to be pleading with the Lord to just send him down “A Few Good Years” (Hambridge/Fleming). Good luck with that Buddy! With the emotional and sincere way in which you asked, I think the Lord may

send them to ya.....especially if He’s a fan of the blues.

Close your ears, Lord. Here we are on the very next song and as he refers to the devil being in him, Buddy’s claiming to be “Guilty As Charged” (Hambridge/Fleming). Alrighty then! Musically and vocally, Buddy’s on top of his game right here. With Tom, Rob and Kevin lighting up the rhythm behind him Buddy’s just kill-ing it on the guitar and vocals, especially with those patented, escalating, falsetto screeches of his.....

“I’m GUILTY! I’m GUILTY as charged. This is classic Buddy Guy right here.

Those of you who subscribe to SiriusXM radio have already had a taste of - no pun intended - “Cognac” (Guy/Hambridge/Fleming). Since it features Keith Richards and Jeff Beck joining Buddy in on some back and forth monster guitar licks, this one will surely be on most of the other sta-tions playlists as well.

On the title track, as Buddy hears the back door slam while coming in the front, he’s quickly faced with the reality that “The Blues Is Alive And Well” (Ham-bridge/Nicholson). It’s not as if anything Buddy does needs much help, but with that said, the masterful job of the Muscle Shoals horns, added to the always amazing keyboard work from Kevin, this one does rise to the next level.

Whether he gets those extra few good years or not, once Buddy reaches heaven’s gate the joy on his face will show that he’s “Blue No More” (Hambridge/Johnson). This is a wonderfully soft and slow duet featuring Buddy and James Bay doing an absolutely beautiful job of sharing the very soulful and emotional vocals and the soothing blues guitar leads.

The first two minutes of “You Did The Crime” (Hambridge/Fleming) start off with a very slow and deep bass line by Wil-lie, light and timely cymbal taps by Tom, and a trance inducing piano and harmonica performance by Kevin and Mick, that I’d have been fine with this being an instru-mental. Then Buddy joins in and softly, yet strongly, starts belting out some slow blues and something good suddenly got better.

For those of you who like full throttle, smokin’ blues rockers, this one will have you saying “Ooh Daddy” (Hambridge/Fleming). With Tom and Willie leading the frantic rhythm pace, Kevin wailing away on those keys and Buddy and Rob slugging it out on guitar, this one’s three plus minutes of all hell breaking loose.

With all that’s going on here; the fabu-lously soulful horns; the outstanding and profound rhythm; and some of Buddy’s most scorching guitar work; the lyr-ics somehow dominate on “End Of The Line” (Hambridge/Fleming)

The message Buddy’s delivering came through these ears very loud and clear. He knows he’s reaching the end of his line and he knows he’s the end of the line of the legendary blues greats. Hang in there Buddy, the Lord’s gonna answer that prayer and give you a few good years.

If you haven’t yet received a copy of “The Blues Is Alive And Well” for air-play, please contact Betsie Brown at www.blindraccoon.com and to find out more about Buddy Guy, just go to www.buddyguy.net. Whomever you contact, please tell them their friend the Blew-zzman sent you.
