VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2

By Sharon Buck, LHCP Treasurer

Fall is the time of year that government agencies are asking employees to dig deep into their pockets to contribute to the Combined Federal Campaign, better known as the CFC. By participating in the CFC, employees can make donations from their paychecks to the CFC fund. Those donations are distributed to the designated CFC organizations.

Landstuhl Hospital Care Project is one of those designated CFC organizations. Remember CFC #12282. LHCP first became a member of the CFC in 2008. Last fall, individuals pledged to the LHCP mission by marking CFC #12282 on their CFC donation form. LHCP started receiving those pledged donations in March 2009. So far LHCP has received $16,225.29 from the 2008 donations. Additional donations from the 2008 pledged campaign should continue until the last quarter of 2009. These funds have been instrumental in our support of troops who have been hospitalized overseas.

The Fall 2009 Campaign drive is underway. Donations pledged in 2009

will be received by LHCP beginning in March 2010 and will continue to be received until the last quarter of 2010.

If you have the opportunity to make a CFC pledge, please consider marking down CFC #12282. Your pledge will be used to provide comfort and relief items to military service members who become injured, sick, or wounded while serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. LHCP supports patients hospitalized at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, combat support hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan, and VA hospitals in the United States. Your contribution will bring a little bit of home to a military service member serving our country in a place far from home.

For a list of CFC donor organizations from which LHCP received donations, go to: www.landstuhlhospitalcareproject.org and click on SPONSORS.

Thank you for your support of LHCP and our military troops!

LHCP Update

LHCP’s CFC designation

Page 2: July VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2 September, 2009 LHCP …...Thank you again for all your support. I wish you and your family the best and hope all the happiness you brought over here is returned

The wonderful email and “snail” mail that we receive is posted on our website. Click on the “Troop Thanks” button to read more of the thank you notes that come to LHCP. Here is a sampling from this quarter:

June 2009

My time has come to go back home. I will be headed home next week. I wanted to thank you again for your outstanding support. You have touched many lives and brought a smile to even the toughest of soldiers and Airmen. You have reminded hundreds and literally thousands that they are not forgotten and inspired them to carry on.

I hope you know how much everyone over here appreciates all you do. On behalf of all the military coming through here “the gateway to Afghanistan”: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts… You are a real difference maker.

Capt xxxx is my replacement, and you can continue to send things this way and they will continue to get distributed to all the military serving over here....

It has been a true pleasure to meet you (on-line) and you can bet that I will make my voice known (come CFC time) about all the wonderful things LHCP has done for us….

Thank you again for all your support. I wish you and your family the best and hope all the happiness you brought over here is returned to you.

Proud to Serve, SWM, Capt, USAF, MSC Administrator, xxth Expeditionary Medical Group Manas AB, Kyrgyz Republic

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the wonderful coupons you sent us. And truly this

will help the American soldiers in Europe.

Thank you again, Sincerely, JH, Store Director Grafenwoehr Commissary

Wow, thank you so much for the sanitizer and we just got our box of pillow cases, hehe even got Spider Man in there too. Those all were a big hit!! (Parts of email removed for OPSEC). I appreciate all that you are doing back there and think the real warriors are the ones waiting at home.

JOP

Hello my supply angels,

You are such a blessing to all of us. We have large tents where lots of fellow military who are going downrange stay while they are passing through. I take the boxes you send me to them and hand it out. I tell everyone I give stuff to about the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project. I hope to make a huge difference for you come the next CFC!

I will be here for another month but will pass on your information to him so this can continue. I would love to thank you in person one day. You are so wonderful.

Have a wonderful day.

SWM, Capt, USAF, MSC Administrator, EMED Clinic

July 2009

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all that you have done here for the 115th. All of us and the soldiers have benefited greatly from your program. I am leaving this week finally to go back home to BAMC. I

have a wonderful new replacement and I am supplying you with her email.

I told her that I would be giving her email to you. She is a wonderful nurse and shares the same passion for taking care of the soldiers as myself. It makes it a bit easier leaving knowing that I am leaving them in good hands.

Again, thank you for everything!!! You are a rock star!!!

CPT APL EMT, Task Force xxxth Med

August 2009

Thank you so much for your generosity. Our ER was so short on sheets. They came at the perfect time. We really appreciate the socks and other linens. Socks always find a way of disappearing in the laundry and getting destroyed from the dirt. It is refreshing to put on a new pair.

We appreciate everything.

BAE Systems Luau for LHCP By Denise German, BAE Systems, and Rachel Hause

The Charity Challenge Committee of BAE Systems in Mojave, CA held a unique fundraiser for LHCP on June 9—a corporate lunch luau for employees.

The committee raised over $1000 by selling lunch and tickets for a raffle basket filled with beach items. They also held an Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt Contest. Proceeds went towards the purchase of flip-flops.

The delicious lunch consisted of teriyaki chicken, rice, vegetables,

Troop Thanks (continued) Ma'am,

Today we got the women's underwear, bras and CDs and purple heart backpacks. Thank you so much.

I just wanted to let you know that the DVD players arrived today. I am going to try to get them out to the Hospital in the next day or so. I would like to have some photos taken when we give them out to the wards and, if it can be arranged, I will be sure to send you the photos.

Thanks for all you do.

happy patients here in Kuwait!!

I'm going to be doing an inventory but for right now I think we are doing good once those shorts get here!

Hope things are well with you.

Very Respectfully, TM LT NC USN

Thanks for what you do. It is really appreciated! I've been able to share with some units here, so everything is okay.

You guys are awesome!

V/R, Capt T

We received the shipment of dvd's, shorts and shirts and BOY were we surprised! Special thanks to your staff. We hung the red, white, and

Gathering of the Guard Welcomes LHCP

VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2 PAGE 4

By James Spliedt, LHCP Vice President

The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) held their annual Gathering of the Guard in Ogden, Utah July 30 through August 2. The PGR provided LHCP with free vendor space for the weekend. Activities for the PGR included the traveling Vietnam Memorial wall, a concert, and the Field of Flags. The Field of Flags was approximately 5,000 American flags representing all our fallen heroes during the Global War on Terror.

LHCP used the free vendor space to raise our visibility to a nation-wide membership of the Patriot Guard Riders. During the weekend, I had the chance to meet many veterans and several Gold Star families. A number of the LHCP contact cards, brochures, and pins were given out throughout the Gathering. Our September Honoree is SPC Jordan Thibeault, the son of John and Celeste Thibeault, a Utah PGR Gold Star family.

It was a good experience overall and we hoped to get LHCP’s name out to other parts of United States. I guess this was successful because our newsletter editor was attending a monthly breakfast gathering of Minnesota Marine Moms a couple weeks later and met a mom that had traveled to Utah and had one of our contact cards and pins from this event!

Meet Cindy Donohoe – LHCP’s New Policy Director Karen Grimord’s presentation in December 2008, describing the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project during a BAE Systems Charity event, hit a chord with Cindy Donohoe. As an Air Force Brat, Cindy truly appreciates the sacrifices that those in the military and their families make every day. She lived on several military bases while growing up and graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School, right down the road from Landstuhl.

Cindy’s day job is Vice President of Benefits for BAE Systems, Inc., a global defense, security and aerospace company with approximately 105,000 employees worldwide. BAE Systems' sales exceeded £18.5 billion (US $34.4 billion) in 2008. She joined the company in 2003 and currently manages all US benefit plans. Her responsibilities include strategy, design, operations, M&A integration and communications for retirement and health and welfare plans, serving over 45,000 employees. In addition she is the HR lead for mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, she is a strategic partner with the M&A function.

Cindy earned her MBA International Business from George Washington University and is a Senior Human Resource Member. She is married with two teenage children and enjoys traveling, reading, skiing and golfing.

As we welcome Cindy, we thank Peg Seljeskog for her volunteerism and dedicated term as Policy Director.

Honorees for 3rd Quarter 2009 Shipments

By Maria Waddell, LHCP Secretary/ SoL Coordinator

Stitches of Love (SoL) is a special group of ladies within the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project (LHCP) who sew, quilt, knit, and/or crochet items for wounded troops. These items vary from medicine bags, to quilts, blankets, pillows, sleep masks, scrub caps, and even Christmas stockings. LHCP works with Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and combat support hos-pitals in the field to find out exactly what is needed (size, shape, exact measurements) and to develop specific patterns for each item.

What are these items for, and how do they help? The medicine bag is just the right size to hold patient

in their 80’s all the way through high school contributing. Some don’t actually sew, but they organize a local church or com-munity group which donates to LHCP. These volunteers donate their time and expertise to provide comforts to our men and women that have given so much to our country. You won’t find a better, more caring group anywhere!

We are always looking for new members to help us out with ongoing needs! If you are interested, please email SoL Coordinator, Maria Waddell at [email protected].

records, medicines, and any other small items. Then it is tied to the gurney/bed as the patient is trans-ported between hospitals—an easy way to keep from losing important things! Pillows, quilts, and blankets are used for transporting the patient; pillows can be used to prop wounded limbs, and the quilts and blankets are great for those cold MEDVAC flights. SoL makes these items to fit the gurneys, so there is no excess fabric to catch on medical equipment. Sleep masks help patients rest better, and scrub caps keep the medical personnel outfitted and add a bright touch with our cheery fabrics. Our SoL members come from all walks of life. We have young ladies
