Potentate's Message: Good day to all Nobles and Ladies! As the old saying goes, time flies when you’re having FUN! Here we are, already into Summer! We have had many great events and there is still more to come. Our Italian night had a very big turn-out of guests. The food was great, the service by the Divan members and their Ladies superb and the Tango dancers were the hit of the night. As one of the dancers was explaining what type of dancing they were doing we had a big surprise when he started to tell us a story about their niece. She is one of our Shrine Children and as he spoke more about her journey through Shriners Hospital you could hear his voice start to quiver with appreciation that the Shriners were there for her. WOW ! This is why I'm proud to be Shriner! A big thanks to all that supported Italian Night. We "Rocked Around the Clock" 50’s style as the penny loafers were dusted off and the poodle skirts and letter sweaters were worn. Great job to all the guys and gals that came out in their "50's" get-ups. The food was straight out of the 50's - sliders, cheeseburgers, fries and even root beer floats! A spe-cial thank you to our Chief Aide Bob Bailey and his Lady Nancy and to all the Aides that were there to help out. Once again we were able to hold our 2nd annual Sphinx Shriners Carnival in Manchester. I wish that Mother Nature could have been a little kinder to us but we made the best of it. I would like to thank all the Units & Clubs that came out to support the event it was deeply appreciated. Even with a few rain outs we were raised over $6,000 this year. A big thank you to Coleman Brothers Carnivals!
As I'm finishing this letter we are all getting ready for our trip to To-ronto, Canada for the 136th Impe-rial Council session. I know we will all have a great time. The bus traveling to Toronto will have about 50 Nobles and Ladies from Sphinx, Melha and Pyramid. That is sure to be a great time! Lady Heidi and I wish to thank the bus captain volunteers from Sphinx, Lew and Nancy Bither and Ed & Joanne Schilke. We look forward to greeting all of you at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.
There are many good times still to be enjoyed as we travel to Hanover, New Hampshire and Virginia Beach, march in parades throughout the Summer and gather for our Family Picnic in August. I hope to see many of the Nobles and Ladies attend these great Summertime events. Please check here in the Booster for details. I would like to leave you with this saying I was told by our niece Haley "HAVE A HAPPY DAY"

Illustrious Sir David McDonough, Sr. and some of the Sphinx Shrine Funsters, Ladies and families spent Friday evening, June 18th raising funds in support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Boston. The United in Rock Tour featuring Foreigner, Styx and special guest Kansas performed at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the Foreigner CD/DVD sets and the Styx programs were being donated to the Boston Hospital. The "helpers" met Foreigner contact, Brett Alverson, outside the arena a little after 5pm. Foreigner wristbands were is‐sued and then the Sphinx group was escorted into the con‐course where the intensive training began. “The pricing on either item is $20. This isn’t rocket science, folks.” Next Brett shared the secrets to packing the team's vend boxes – 10 programs & 30 CD’s fit nicely when properly packed. A string of door prize tickets were issued as well. One ticket per each item sold got the buyer a chance at winning an Epiphone guitar that had been autographed by Foreigner. The Sphinx team had a table along the wall at one entrance and the rest paired up to sell around the arena. With fezzes in place, the Sphinx contingent was ready to greet the crowd as the doors opened at 6pm. While some CD’s and programs were sold before the concert began, most people entering were busy getting pre‐concert goodies and finding their seats. Kansas opened the concert with a 40‐minute set that in‐cluded their hit, “Dust in the Wind”. After their set was complete, an announcement was made that both Foreigner and Styx were donating a portion of their proceeds to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. After that, things got very busy, very fast. It would be nice to think it was because of
the fans' avid support of Shriners Hospitals, but a chance at the guitar may have added to the madness! Foreigner took the stage and played non‐stop for two hours. Great hits such as “Cold as Ice” and “Hot Blooded” brought the fans to their feet. When their set was done, and the stage was being set up for Styx, a reminder announcement was made about the donation to the Shriners Hospitals and the autographed guitar. This time the Shrine helpers were better prepared for another huge buying frenzy. When Styx took the stage – the groups gathered back at table to meet with Brett and cash out for the evening. When the remaining CD’s and programs were counted and boxed and the money counted, almost $1600 had been made for the Shriners Hospitals in Boston. At the drawing for the guitar after the event, the first ticket drawn had no owner. A loud cheer rose from those gath‐ered – realizing they were “back in the hunt”. The second ticket drawn did have an owner. A very excited young lady worked her way through the crowd to the front to present her ticket for verification. Once confirmed, she received a huge round of applause ‐ and the guitar! Classic rock music and a chance to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals ‐ it doesn’t get much better than that!

Sphinx takes FIRST PLACE Dromedary Award!
Don't forget your 2010 Sphinx Tie! Support First Lady Heidi's special project for the kids! Seen here "modeled" by Noble Anton "Tony" Petras, the 2010 official Sphinx Shrine neckties help to support First Lady Heidi's project for the year ‐ improving the atmosphere at the Springfield Hospital's COAL Lab, where she plans on making the surroundings more "family friendly." The ties are specially designed, with the "Editorial Without Words" in a deep, rich blue background.
Every year, the Imperial Shrine recognizes the efforts of each individual Shrine center to effectively communicate with their membership. This includes their membership publications and their websites. A panel of experts reviews each, offers feed‐back to each Shrine on their submissions, and then recognizes the best efforts among ALL Shrines with a First Place Award in each category. This year, a new category / award was added ‐ for Email communications. These would include the email "blasts" you periodically see in your email inbox.
We're happy to report that Sphinx Shrine took FIRST PLACE in this new category!
Imperial's feedback was that the use of graphics and color, along with how the emails were organized, was a great atten‐tion‐getter. Additionally, we use an email program called "Constant Contact" and they were impressed with the statistics that the company could provide on how many were opened, how many read each article, and much more. Pictured left, is Illustrious Sir David McDonough presenting our Communications Director, Noble Bruce Fairclough, with the First Place certificate and crystal trophy from Imperial at the recent June meeting. Bruce is the official Sphinx Photogra‐pher, Webmaster and Editor of the "Booster." Included in these duties are the writing and implementation of the Email blasts that resulted in this recognition for Sphinx. The trophy will be proudly on display at the Shrine Center. Philae Shriners would like to invite you to the historic city of Halifax for the Northeast Shrine Association 2010 Fall Field Days. The Marriott Waterfront, will be the headquarters hotel and the center of the weekend's activities with all hotels within walking dis‐tance and connected by pedways.
You will find excellent food and entertainment in Halifax along with various tours throughout the city. Halifax is a very friendly city where you can feel safe walking the streets and waterfront at any time of the day. There is a full schedule of fun events for the Nobles and ladies to include meet and greets, various competitions, market place, breakfasts and luncheons, ladies tours and evening entertain‐ment to include the infamous Kitchen Party and a Lobster Dinner inside the National Historical Site Citadel Hill.

OMAR Paper Crusade Totals $985.58 At our last gathering on June 4th, 18 Nobles met at the BPOE Elks Lodge #1893 in Manchester for a delicious BBQ dinner. Menu items included a choice of ribs, steak or chicken. Those present en‐joyed good food and great fellowship before the summer break. Past President Ron Schlank (our Paper Crusade Chairman), has already completed the first (2) of (4) scheduled Paper Crusades in the Manchester area. Both Paper Crusades were conducted at Highland Park Markets and a total of $985.58 has been collected to date. Thanks to all the volun‐teers assisting with this GREAT effort. Past President E. Thomas McKinney (our Parade Chairman), has also been busy. Our oversized FEZ has been in both the Shad Derby Parade in Windsor and the Tolland Memorial Day Parade. Tom and his 1948 Jeepster convertible will also provide an Omar Shrine Club presence in the Independence Day Parade in Columbia scheduled for July 5th this year. Members please mark your calendars – our next meeting: Friday, September 17th ‐ 5:30pm Elks Lodge, 30 Bissell St., Manchester
OASIS/ALHAMBRA Shrine Clubs At our Spring gathering on May 4th, 20 Nobles met at Angelico’s Restaurant in New Britain. We welcomed 3 new members to our club; Tony Gesnaldo and Sokol Selimaj, who were both in attendance and Paige Howarth who was absent due to a prior commitment. We held the first of (2) planned Paper Crusades for the year on May 22nd at Geisslers Supermarket in South Windsor and a total of $453.80 was collected. Our next Paper Crusade is planned for September .
Directors Cruise a Hit! On June 19th, the Directors Staff sponsored a CT River Sunset Cruise on the "Hartford Belle." Departing the dock at Hartford's Charter Oak Landing , under the direction of the Captain Brad Fenn, the guests enjoyed a leisurely view of the Hartford skyline and enjoyed a delicious dinner onboard. Fraternal good cheer was enjoyed by all and attitudes were definitely "adjusted" by the time the entirely relaxing evening came to a conclusion as the sun went behind the skyline.

DRIVERS WANTED Volunteers ‐ Mindful of others ‐ we need you to drive Sphinx’s Hospital Vans transporting patients to Shriners’ Hospitals in Springfield and/or Boston. C.D.L. license is not required YOU PROVIDE an essential service, one that is truly appreciated. Occasionally you might have to be available on short notice. The trips can require any where from 4, to over 8, hours. If the opportunity to give thoughtful ser‐vice to those who need help sounds like something you would like to do … Call the Sphinx Shrine Office at 860‐666‐5449 and have them forward your name to the Director of Hospital Transportation. Not interested in driving? We also use ‘ride‐a‐longs’ to accompany the drivers and we are looking for them as well... Please call if you are interested.

SPHINX SHRINERS MOTOR PATROL
June 2010
The Motor Patrol, under the able com‐mand of Captain Charlie Weiss and his two Lieutenants, Nick Daniolos and John Taylor have successfully completed eight of their yearly parades with only eleven left to go. We have successfully picked up two new parades this year, The Plain‐ville Fireman’s 125th Anniversary Parade on June 12th and Groton’s Fourth of July Parade on July 4th. We are happy to accept our new member, David Rancourt into the group. Dace has attended our practices and has performed with us in several parades, and is learning maneuvers at a very fast pace. There is also a standing invitation for any other Shriners who would like to perform with us to attend a meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month to see what we are all about. The soda can redemption group headed to by the Blonsteins, West on Bedore, Jack Markowski, Bill Augar and Bob Burns and the rest of the hard workers have had a very successful season collect‐ing empty beverage cans and bottles at several local swap meets. With the proceeds helping to support the yearly expenses of the Motor Patrol; the detached tabs going to the hospitals. Jack Markowski has successfully completed the installation of the new gasoline pump on the trailer. This new addition to the trailer has much simplified the gassing up of the little cars at the parades. Also, many thanks to Jack for his dedication in keeping up to date with preventative maintenance on the truck and trailer. A reminder to the members, the Tuesday practices are still in effect and we need as many of you as can attend. The better we look in the parades the more they will want us. Submitted by Truman E. Springfield Hospital News The Shriners Hospitals for Children will soon start ac‐cepting insurance reimbursements. The implementa‐tion over the 22 Hospitals will be staggered starting at the beginning of July 2010 in select Hospitals. The Springfield Hospital is scheduled to start in April 2011. Getting ready for this process is very involved cover‐ing many aspects of treating our children. This will not change the mission of our Hospitals, but will allow another form of revenue to help fund the operation of the hospitals. Children will still receive care regardless of their ability to pay. The research and teaching that currently goes on will continue. After the earthquake in Haiti, eight children were treated in our Massachusetts Hospitals, six in Spring‐field and two in Boston. Of the six in Springfield, four have returned to Haiti. The staff of the Springfield Hospital purchased tents for the families since they were living in make‐shift shelters using cardboard and other available material. Follow‐up treatment will be available in clinics which are held annually. There is the possibility of more Haitians coming to Springfield Hospital. In order to make donations specific to the Springfield Hospital it is necessary to designate them for a spe‐cific purpose. Some of the areas are: Wheel Chairs, housing, transportation, spinal implants. Please call the Sphinx Office if you would like to make a designated donation. Aisha Temple #83 held their Installation of Officers on March 14, 2010. Queen Betty Thompson was installed with her officers. Queen Betty has Music for her theme this year, the Supreme Queen who will be visiting us in August is a musician and has chosen Music as her theme as well.

TEMPLE GUARD NEWS Captain Dan Luft announced the ap‐pointment of Noble Arthur Hirtle to Lieutenant. Noble Hirtle will be in‐volved assisting Quartermaster Terry Worster in obtaining new Unit uni‐forms. The Unit sends get well wishes to Past President Willis Schroeder Jr. Furthermore, the Unit would like to thank our Divan Rep., 1st Ceremonial Master Vincent Matozzo, for all his timely advice and attendance at all Unit Meetings this Spring. Freddy said, "He sure doesn't look like much!" Satan's whole team relaxed when they saw Grace... Thinking he had won the game, Satan wound up and fired his first pitch. To the shock of everyone, Grace hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen! But Satan was not worr ied; his center fielder let very few get by. He went up for the ball, but it went right through his glove, hit him on the head and sent him crashing on the ground; the crowd went wild as the ball continued over the fence, for a home run! The Lord's team won! The Lord then asked Freddy if he knew why Love, Faith and Wisdom could get on base but couldn't win the game. Freddy answered that he didn't know why. The Lord explained, "If your love, faith and wisdom had won the game, you would think you had done it by yourself. Love, Faith and Wisdom will get you on base but only My Grace can get you Home: 'For Grace, is a gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast." Psalm 84:11, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly." Be Blessed, Grace is everything. Thank God for what you have, TRUST GOD for what you need. If you fill your heart with regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow, you have no today to be thankful for. Love, Faith, Wisdom and Grace are the only things that can be divided and shared without being diminished. Do what you can, for who you can, with what you have, and where you are. I enjoyed these and thought you would, too.
THE LORD'S BASEBALL GAME Freddy and the Lord stood by to observe a baseball game. The Lord's team was playing Satan's team. The Lord's team was at bat, the score was tied zero to zero, and it was the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs. They continued to watch as a batter stepped up to the plate named 'Love.' Love swung at the first pitch and hit a single, because "Love never fails." The next batter was named Faith, who also got single because Faith works with Love. The next batter up was named Wisdom. Satan wound up and threw the first pitch. Wisdom looked it over and let it pass: Ball one. Three more pitches and Wisdom walked because he never swings at what Satan throws. The bases were now loaded. The Lord then turned to Freddy and told him, He was now going to bring in His star player. Up to the plate stepped Grace.
Sphinx Attorney Gets Award The Hartford Country Bar Association presented its 2010 Pro Bono Award to Noble Morton N. Katz, Sphinx Shriners Attorney and Parliamentarian. The award plaque was given to Noble Mort at Law Day ceremonies April 30, 2010 in Hartford Superior Court. Mort works with Statewide Legal Services, which provides legal counsel without fee for parties in civil actions who can not afford private counsel. He is at the Law Clinic in Hartford, preparing court documents in Family Relations cases and represents claim‐ants in Unemployment Compensation hearings and appeals.
Noble Mort is certified to represent veterans making disability claims before the Veterans Administration. He is among a group of lawyers trained at a Connecticut Bar Association seminar to guide veterans through this complex bureaucratic process of claims. His other public services include serving as Superior Court Magis‐trate in eight G.A. courts about the state, hearing Small Claims and infractions cases. He is a Special Public Defender in Hartford G.A. 14, representing indigent defendants in criminal cases. Mort has been a member of the Connecticut Public Transportation Commission since 1984

Motor Patrol Acquisition (Left) On Monday, May 10th, the Potentate and Lieutenant John Taylor of the Motor Patrol, accept the "keys" to the Motor Pa‐trol's new "scaled down" version of a Burris tractor trailer. Burris Logistics of Rocky Hill donated the truck to Sphinx Shrine. Other members of the Motor Patrol were on hand to accept this impressive gift. The "big rig" made its debut in the Newing‐ton Memorial Day Parade.
