As it is holiday time, consider a visit to Ballintubber Abbey, by leaving the main Castlebar-Galway road and add your whispered prayer to all the voiced and muffled prayers offered in this Abbey since 1216, that we may all continue in our time to 'Do this in memory'. JULY PARISH NEWSLETTER

2017.

The stones remember:

The entrance sign at Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, welcomes us to a place of

'enduring hope' and 'faithful love'. People have gathered there around the altar since

1216. The story is one of survival, courage and worship. Through fires, persecutions

and attacks from every side, against the orders of Kings and the ravages of famine,

the Abbey of the Holy Trinity refused to be silenced. The ancient Abbey in

Roscommon has its origins in St. Coman's monastic site in the sixth century and then

the Dominicans came there in the 12th century. Sligo and Boyle abbeys have a similar

history. All these unique ruins, remind us of ancient stories where druidic ritual and

Christian worship find their common sources in the lives of the people.

Ballintubber is 'the town of the well'. St. Patrick's well. It has never been known to

run dry and is remembered today as the place of welcome where St. Patrick baptised

people who longed for and believed in the living water that offered new life. Tochar

Phádraig has, over the centuries, merged into the identity of all who walk the miles

over stones and hills, through ditches and valleys, hoping for communion with God

and with one another. The Pilgrim Route is truly an experience of worship, marked by

moments of thanksgiving, inclusion, light and communion - which hallmark our

celebration of Mass. Windows from the thirteenth century and a doorway from the

fifteenth century, together with natural stone features, capture the wonder of a history,

where God visited his remembering people and set them free. As it is holiday time,

consider a visit to Ballintubber Abbey, by leaving the main Castlebar-Galway road

and add your whispered prayer to all the voiced and muffled prayers offered in this

Abbey since 1216, that we may all continue in our time to 'Do this in memory'.
