It’s almost Race Season! The Racing Team welcomes skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Team members of lower abilities might take some time to establish eligibility to race in the regular races, but that is not an obstacle to participation in our program. Competition is based on ability on the race course (as measured by the Crescent Ski Council’s handicapping system), without regard to age or gender. Within Crescent, racers as young as age 4 and as old as 74 have become newly qualified. The racing season comprises five regular races and the season-ending Crescent Cup: Dec 19-20 – Appalachian Mtn, Jan 9-10 – Sugar Mtn Jan 30-31 – Appalachian Mtn Feb 6-7 – Beech Mtn Feb 20-21 – Sugar Mtn Mar 5 – Silver Creek, WV In addition, we offer gate-running practices at Appalachian on Friday nights before the races at Appalachian, Sugar and Beech. Opportunities to “get qualified” (establish your Starting Crescent Handicap) are available at Crescent’s Development and Training on Sunday, Dec. 6 and as part of the qualifying flights in connection with the regular races. Lift tickets are discounted at all races. Racers at regular races com- pete for the esteem of their peers, small prizes for the top three finishers in all flights (handicap-based divisions), individual points and Team Points. The male and female Individual Point Champions win a trip to Steamboat, CO in connection with the Crescent Ski Council’s annual Steamboat Ski & Instruction Trip. Past winners from W-SSOC include Ja Davis and Caitlin Penry. So far, we know of the following racers who plan to participate in the 2015-2016 season: Dena, Kyle and Thomas Carroll, Jodi Dias, Emma Henry, Ken Lumsden, Grant McAllister, Grant McAl- lister III (“G3”), Cathie Mulgrew, Vance Parker, Caitlin Penry, Cary Popour, Mike Shipko, Wes Snyder, Will Stranch, George Wunker and our newest racer Tara Nelson. pleasant walk at Reynolda Village on Thursday, October 29. This walk was late enough – even though it was still Daylight Saving Time – that it was beginning to get a bit too dark! So, with the end of Daylight Saving Time on November 1, we’ll meet for our walk on the Muddy Creek Greenway on Thursday, November 12, at 4:00 PM. Meet at the parking lot that is off of Meadowlark Dr, less than ½ mile from Country Club Rd. If you don’t want to walk, bring your bike. Questions? Contact Pat at [email protected].

Christmas Lights WalkWednesday, December 16, 7:00 PM Leader: Pat LumsdenThis an easy stroll through Ardmore’s best of the Christmas light displays. Meet at 7 PM in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Hawthorne Rd. at Knollwood St. We’ll head up Hawthorne Rd. to Melrose St, then return to Magnolia St, with continuation what likely will be the best display of all, the offices of W-SSOC’s Tree Bright. Bring a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather!

Report from Club MeetingCookout at Tanglewood Park Thursday, September 17, 2015It was a pleasant late-summer evening at Tanglewood. George kept the burgers and hot dogs coming and we had a great selection of side dishes and desserts brought by attendees.

Our guest speaker, Will Scott, is the Yadkin Riverkeeper.

He reported on efforts to improve the water quality of the Yadkin River – Winston-Salem’s principal source of drinking water, not to mention the recreational oppor-tunities it offers for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and fishing. The 47 attendees included: Kevin Beach, Robyn Bilfelt, Tree Bright & Rick Brant, Barbara Braswell & Randy Reavis, Ken & Carolyn Carpenter, Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Helene Elbein, Kathy & Ken Furr, Ben Harris, Peggy High, Phyllis & Bob Hudspeth, Frances Mundy & Ronnie Jones, Pat & Ken Lumsden, Carol Mc-Cune, Martha Ann McDonald & guest Earl Barrow, Dennis & Kathy McNeil, Carol McCune, Pat Messick, Don & Lynn Miller, Cathie Mulgrew, Marc & Sam Pearce and Max Pearce, Milton & Sara Peddycord, Beverly & Brent Rockett, Jeannette Romaniello, Will Scott (guest speaker, Yadkin Riverkeeper), Mike Shipko and Leah Shipko, Kathy Smith & Ron Rumberger, Karen Vohs, Sharon Watson, Deborah Willard, George Wunker

Report from Bike Rides on Salem Creek Greenway & around Salem LakeWe rode on Wednesdays and some Thursdays through-out the summer. We only got rained out a couple of times. Riders throughout Spring and Summer included Robyn Bilfelt, Mike & Leanne and Wade Brendle, Leanne’s sister Mary Owens and nephews Alden and Landon Owens, Tree Bright & Rick Brant, Ken Carpenter, Ken & Kathy Furr, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Dennis McNeil, Randy Reavis, Brent Rockett and Karen Vohs. Evening rides are suspended upon the return to Eastern Standard Time in early November. We’ll resume when Daylight Savings time starts again in March 2016.

Report from Bike & Hike & Wine & DineFriday, June 19-Sunday, June 21, 2015We skipped this report in the June SKIER. The weather was tricky on Friday and Saturday. Early-riders on Friday, riding from Damascus to Green Cove, got caught in a short deluge at Green Cove; those who started an hour later did not get wet, including an extension to White-

top and the NC/TN border. Similarly on Saturday for the Damascus-Abingdon ride: Ron Rumberger’s Weather App showed severe storm cells approaching from the SW, but it missed us and we made it back before the afternoon downpour. Some sought refuge at either the Abingdon Winery or the Damascus Brewery. The weather cleared out and we enjoyed a beautiful day hiking at Grayson Highlands on Sunday. The wild ponies and, new this year, Texas Longhorn steers, provided lots of photo opportunities. Participants included Barbara Braswell & Randy Reavis, Rick Brant & Tree Bright, Darla Goldfuss & Charles Reeves and Charles’ daughter Kristine, Cammie & Jonathan Hale, Ronnie Jones, Janet & Randy Leonard, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Don & Lynn Miller, Denise Norrell, Beverly & Brent Rockett, Kathy Smith & Ron Rumberger, Karen Vohs and Carol Westmoreland.

Report from Camping at Great Smoky MountainsFriday-Sunday, August 7-9, 2015We enjoyed camping at The Mile High Campground (5,400 ft. above sea level, to be exact) on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. The extra elevation made about 10 degrees of refreshing difference compared to the low-lands around Oconoluftee Visitor Center at Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We enjoyed beautiful sunsets with the high-altitude view and beautiful night skies (we saw some spectacular fireballs of the Perseid Me-teor Shower). Leanne cooked her famous pork chops on Saturday night. Two herds of elk are now established in Great Smoky Mountain National Park – one in the Cata-loochee area and one in the vicinity of the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. We saw about 30 elk of the latter herd near Oconaluftee – bulls, does and calves. Mike also saw a large elk as it sauntered through our campground in the fog on Sunday morning. On Saturday, we braved the crowded conditions at the parking area for the Andrews Bald Trail and Clingman’s Dome Observation Tower. The trail to Andrews Bald descended a surprising distance before coming out on a spectacular grassy viewpoint from which we could see Fontana Lake. After Andrew’s Bald, we connected to the Appalachian Trail for a short

distance along a narrow ridge before arriving at Cling-man’s Dome. Linda, Margo, Ken, and Pat stayed over until Monday and hiked on the Balsam Mountain Nature Trail. Campers included Mike, Leanne and Wade Brendle, Don & Deni Stewart, Don & Lynn Miller, Margo Cooper, Tammy Cooper, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Linda Neighbors, Karen Vohs and Sharon Watson.

Report from Hike on the Tanawha TrailSunday, October 11, 2015As you’ve heard, or seen, by now, it has been a strange year for Fall Foliage! Gorgeous fall colors were at their peak on the Tanawha Trail and Rough Ridge, but strangely un-turned a short distance at lower elevation below the Blue Ridge Parkway. In some sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Rough Ridge, the colors were muted – except for some of the reds, and, as seen in the Piedmont, lots of trees were losing their leaves without showing much color. This hike was also wetter than usual from the week of heavy rain that preceded our hike – numerous spots on the trail that are normally dry, were flowing creeklets. The north side from Rough Ridge down to the Boardwalk had muddy spots for the same reason. Hikers included Brad & Robyn Bilfelt, Karen Fion, Jonathan & Cammie Hale, Ken & Kathy Furr, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Linda Ortiz, Brent & Beverly Rockett, Karen Vohs and Sharon Watson. At the trailhead at Linn Cove Visitor Center, we also saw Becky Wheeler and her daughter, Sherri Sowers Cook and her family (husband Kenny and son Trey).

Report from Hike at Stone Mountain State ParkSaturday, October 17, 2015More of the same: strange foliage! There was very little color at Stone Mtn. It appeared as if the peak of what-ever color there will be, would peak maybe two or three weeks hence! Otherwise, it was beautiful day at one of our favorite hiking destinations. Hikers included Peggy Carter, Margo Cooper, Ronnie Jones & Frances Mundy, Ken & Pat Lumsden and Peggy’s friend Carol Thornton.

Report from Tuesday Night at the MoviesMarketplace CinemaMovie night is not seasonal—we’ve been going on $2 Tuesdays ($2 admission, $2 medium popcorn and $2 medium soft drink) and will continue.

Frequent attendees included Barbara Braswell, Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Margo Cooper, Karen Fion and daughter Ally, Ken & Kathy Furr, Bob & Phyllis Hudspeth, Ronnie Jones & Frances Mundy, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Linda Monciel, Vance Parker, Randy Reavis, Brent & Bev-erly Rockett, Jeannette Romaniello, Karen Vohs, Sharon Watson and George Wunker. The Brendles and Pearces brought their young sons Wade and Max, to the screen-ing of Minions.

Films we’ve enjoyed this simmer include: Age of Adeline, Aloha, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Cinderella, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Far From the Madding Crowd, Furi-ous 7, Hitmen: Agent 47, Mr. Holmes, I’ll See You in My Dreams, The Longest Ride, Mission Impossible, Infinitely Polar Bear, Jurassic World, Inside Out, Mad Max (the futurist apocalyptic film), Max (the German Shepherd), Minions, Picture Perfect 2, San Andreas, Southpaw, Spy, Terminator: Genisys, Tomorrowland, Trainwreck, Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet, The Water Diviner, Woman in Gold, and, most recently, Ant-Man.

Come join us! It’s fun, it’s always worth $2 and the pop-corn is tasty.
