Heart Beat Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ; I want to share a little with you about the State of the Church address from the Bishop, the Lay Leader and the Transition Team. “Something critical about being Methodist has been lost over the last few decades. We have lost our disciple making skills. We need to redirect the flow of attention, energy, and resources to an intense concentration of fostering and sustaining an increase in the number of vital congregations effective in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world…We’ve got to be people who love Jesus, follow Jesus, and share Jesus with others, so they can know Jesus also…

We are to be people who are passionate about God, about making disciples, and about what God is doing in the world today… What would church look like if each local church became a disciple making center? ‘The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.’… It is not just another program or plan. It is a cultural change to become missionary outposts who make disciples, who make more disciples for the transformation of the world.” The Bishop, the Conference Lay Leader, and the Transition Team were calling us back to our Wesleyan roots and to the Great Commission. (Matthew 28: 19-20) I know the people at St. Andrews will step up to the plate in a big way. To God be the glory! Pastor Wayne

  • Saint Andrews, I received one of your prayer shawls as a gift. I want to thank you for making it for me. It certainly made my day. Sincerely, Michelle Reed Saint Andrews Family: Many thanks to our Saint Andrews family for the prayers, cards & support given during Bill’s recent hospitalization. You have been a blessing to our family during this difficult time. Bill, Rhonda & Emmaleigh Goodwin

    Blood Drive Results

Thank you all that came and offered to donate to the blood drive on June 18. 28 members and friends came. I have not received the

official count of the number of units that were actually collected, but from what I was told at

the end of the collection time, there were more than twenty (20) units collected. This means that at least sixty (60) people were helped by this one blood drive. The people that receive the blood will never know from

whom it came or that we were associated with Saint Andrews. But the donations can

possibly be life changing. You can give safely every eight weeks so

another blood drive will be scheduled for late August. Thank you all so very much.

    Yours in Christ, Gary Shook

JOY CLUB The JOY Club will not meet in July and wishes everyone a great summer! Information on the August meeting will be published in the next

    newsletter.

    JULY STAFF VACATIONS

vacation. There will be someone answering the phones July 2, 3, 5, and 6 from 9:00 a.m. to

12:00 noon. The church office is closed on July 4. Anything that needs to go on church chat

should be sent to Pastor Wayne’s email address: [email protected].

The week of July 23rd – July 29th, Pastor Wayne will be on vacation. Please contact the church

Sunday, June 17th, 25 men and 15 women made

their commitment before God to be Godly disciples, spouses and parents. They asked for the church’s prayers for them to become all God created them to become. We celebrate as they declared “As for me and my house, we will serve

    the Lord.”

TEACHER’S CORNER – by Paul Sims Last month, I wrote about the importance of Bible Study and Prayer – how it serves to help you mature as a Christian. I also said that mature Christians make disciples. But how do we go about this? “Evangelizing” is a big, scary word for us at St. Andrews. It should be. We’ve not done well at it. We tried telephoning everyone in Garner and we tried going door-to-door in communities and apartment complexes. We proved what George Barna, a church consultant, has found in his research: cold-calling doesn’t work. According to Barna, what does work is personal contact. Personal contact makes disciples. Put into context for St. Andrews, mature Christians make disciples by making personal contact with people in the community. St. Andrews is aiming to be more active in offering opportunities for its members to invite their neighbors and friends to our church. We have already presented two Old Time Gospel Hours (and a half), we have offered the Courageous Bible study, and we have softball and basketball teams. This fall, we will offer a Beginnings or an Alpha program, or perhaps some other “introduction to Christianity” program. These are all no-pressure ways for the community to get to know us and what we have to offer. We will continue to offer church-wide gatherings as well, such as the Camping trip and the mid-summer picnic. We will occasionally have a "bring a friend to Sunday Service" day. Watch for opportunities to invite people from the community to come and be with us. They don’t have to have a church; they don’t have to be religious or even have to be believers. After all, we are in the business of changing lives and saving souls – our hearts, our minds, and our doors are open to everyone. Be ready with your witness. Let people see what a difference Jesus makes in your life. You might begin a conversation with, “Let me tell you what I experienced in church (or Sunday School or Bible study)", or "Let me tell you what I discovered in my reading (praying, talking with…).” If you’re discussing the economy or world problems you might say, "With all that is going on in this world I could not make it through the day if it weren't for…" When the conversation turns to politics, you could point out "Everyone wants 'change', but let me tell you the only change that ever really mattered to me was when Jesus came into my life." All you have to do is witness; just tell the truth about your life as a Christian, and why it’s important for you to be one.

  • LOADS of LOVE will meet on Monday, July 2, at 10:00 a.m. to prepare and deliver meals for our shut-ins. If you know of someone who needs to be on our list for a meal and/or a card, please let us know. Since February of 2006, we have prepared and delivered 1,897 meals and prepared almost 3,000 cards, each one handmade! This is merely an indication of the impact that we have had on our brothers and sisters in Christ. If you would like to become involved in this very special ministry, just show up at 10:00 a.m. at the church or contact Gloria English at 919/772-4285 or [email protected]. The FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE will not be meeting in July, but we invite you to come join us at our regular meeting in the library on August 15th at 10:00 a.m. If you cannot join us that day, please come meet with us the third Wednesday in September and October or the second Wednesday in November and December. We are a small but busy group. We have adopted a family that is going through some difficult times; we support Garner Area Ministries through cash donations and your generous contributions to the Food-of-the-Month program. We appreciate the soap and shampoo that you bring for HOPE Ministries and the coupons you bring for the American Legion auxiliary. We have recently put cans in the narthex, near the door to the Fellowship Hall, to collect Betty Crocker BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION and UPC codes from Campbell Soup cans. The BOXTOPS will be given to Smith Elementary School and the UPC codes from Campbell Soups will be sent to Methodist University in Fayetteville to help support their library. In September we will be reading to the SAUMC Preschool children, something we did last year and thoroughly enjoyed! Then the Preschoolers will reciprocate in December by performing their Christmas program for us! We are planning some fun things between now and the end of the year, so stay tuned for more details! For more information, contact Gloria English at 919/772-4285 or [email protected]. If the night circle would better suit your schedule with their meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, contact Becky McNeill at [email protected] or 919/451-5302.

UMW Evening Circle News The evening circle of UMW will be hosting a summer pool party on Tuesday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Nancy Woodward's house. We invite ALL the women of the church to join us. Swimming is optional. There will be snacks, fellowship, and a time for devotion, but we will not have childcare this month. Please contact Becky

McNeill ([email protected] or 919-451-5302) with questions or if you need directions.

NEW Women's Faith-Based Book Club All the ladies of the church are invited to join a new book club focusing on fellowship and faith. Our first meeting will convene on Tuesday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the church library. If you are interested in joining us in this new

adventure please contact Becky McNeill ([email protected] or 919-451-5302) for our first reading selection or more information.

    UMM

Meet us for a pool party at the home of Dave Woodward in Colonial Heights. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19th. Bring a piece of meat to grill as well as your towel and swim suit. Details and directions

will come out in a July email to all men. Please join us for this fun event. Thanks,

It is summer and the mission trips are scheduled and planning is going on for the fall events and activities. This year the SAUMC VBS will be early August and we will have a mission project in line. Please keep you eyes open for the schedule and project -- I will be in El Salvador and will miss being a part of the VBS "staff"! But, we know that Mary will spearhead the mission project and the attendees will support it with a passion.

PLEASE SHOP SCHOOL SUPPLY SALES! It is that time of year when stores will have school supplies on sale - and other little fun kid gadgets. We need to have filler items for our Christmas shoeboxes -- and things can also be used for the Angel Tree presents. We would like to have an increase in the number of shoeboxes that we send to the collection facility this year. If you purchase things and have no storage space, I will be glad to take them until they are used to fill the boxes. Also, if you start now and get a few dollars worth of things each week at the dollar store (dolls, cars, clay, jump ropes, yoyos, etc.) we can have a good supply for the boxes.

When you get this newsletter the ASP team will be home -- please let them know how proud we are of them. There will be a slide show in the narthex and I am sure there will be pictures shared while they are there.

Keep an eye on the missions calendar and your church chat reminders -- there are always opportunities to share your talents and time to help others.

  • The Building Committee met on June 17. The utilization of the trees that will be removed in the process of making site improvements was discussed. Some of the trees are suitable for lumber and we definitely don’t want to discard them. We are currently considering the best use for them. The contractor who does our site improvement may be interested in taking the trees and giving us a credit for them. We could have them cut into lumber and give church members and/or others the opportunity to purchase some of the boards. We could use the lumber in the construction of the new building. In any event, the committee definitely does not want to see the trees go to waste. Plans are proceeding for the auction scheduled for September 28 and 29. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Building Fund. The auction on Friday the 29th will include a free dinner, auctioning of baked goods and small items, and a showing of the items to be auctioned on the afternoon of Saturday, the 29th. Auctioneer Randy Creech promises that this will be a fun event. Please help with the securing of items for the auction and invite your friends (outside St. Andrews) to attend. If you have any ideas about this event, contact the church office or Randy Creech. The area flagged with orange tape behind the sanctuary is the planned location of the new building. The flagged area includes the building site and a ten foot buffer around the perimeter. As of June 10, we have received $473,465 or 46.2% of the $1,025,310 pledged in May, 2010 for the new building. We have also received $39,948 in non-pledged gifts. Meetings of the Building Committee are held at 5:30 p.m. in the Bible Classroom, are open to all members of the congregation, and are announced in the church bulletin. Minutes of the Building Committee meetings are on file in the office of Kim Tingler and are available for review by Saint Andrews members. Thanks you for your support, patience, understanding and encouragement in working through the Building Plan Process. Please share your thoughts and concerns about the work of the building committee with Vince Revels, Chair of the Building Committee.

and as we usually do, we will meet from 6:00-8:15 pm. The curriculum for this year is Group Publishing’s Sonrise National Park where we will find the “True

Power of Jesus’ Promises”. VBS is a ministry for children age 4 (by the fall) through Grade 5 (just completed). We STILL will need LOTS of adult support and we will have another meeting for VBS volunteers on July 1 at 4:00 pm, so please pray about your involvement in VBS 2012 and look for details on Church Chat

and Guppies and Tweens emails. Thank you for your support as we look forward to a blessed 2012 as these young Christians seek to

grow in their walk with Christ. May God continue to bless each of you - the family of God worshipping as the family of St. Andrews.

    In Christian love, Sally

    What are Guppies and Tweens???

As part of our Children’s Ministry program, St. Andrews has two groups for fellowship. Guppies are children between the ages of 4 and First Grade and Tweens are in Second through Fifth Grade. In

addition, the 45s are our fourth and fifth graders who will meet for special events and extended Tweens sessions. We meet on Sunday evenings for fellowship and music, and supper is provided by

parent volunteers. We also have a children’s worship time during morning worship which we call W.O.W.

(Worship-Our Way) We look forward to welcoming new members to these groups and hope that children who are in this

age range will join us as we work together to Serve Praise And Grow In Christ!

We continue to covet the prayers of our church family, as these youngest Christians seek to grow in their relationship with Christ through

    fellowship, service and worship.

    Peace, in Christ, Sally

  • Counselor’s blahba …

Tweet me a text on my Facebook!

I’ve come to the realization that I am now old. I watch my children in fascination as they

“tweet” on Twitter and check “updates” on Facebook while texting a friend…every…minute… of

…the… day (except while driving or sleeping of course).

I’m not sure when or where I became old but the realization that my children read more words

in a day on their phone than they hear from me was quite sobering.

Don’t get me wrong, there are several advantages of social media. I can text Garrett at work

and ask him to bring home some milk. I can post a note on Joshua’s Facebook page to remind him

to get us tickets to the next home ECU football game. Abby can text me to tell me to hurry up

so she won’t be late for dance. Lisa had to get an iphone so she could increase the font size…now

she can text real fast, it’s the auto fill that slows her down.

I guess technology is like everything else that is addictive. Use it in moderation and it serves its

purpose but if you allow it to dictate your life then you’ve lost your purpose.

WWJD….There’s probably an app for that too!
