July & August Meetings By Michelle Maltais

This year’s Rho-Cod Cup Tournament (our joint meet-ing with GCSA of Cape Cod) was held on July 17th at Allendale Country Club in Dartmouth, MA. Our host Dan McDermott and his staff had the golf course in great shape. Playing conditions were perfect and Mother Nature cooperated with some enjoyable weather. Despite favorable conditions, Cape Cod retained the cup again this year. We’ll bring it home next time.

During the meeting, our guest speakers Dr. Leslie Robinson-Bostom from Lifespan and George Andosica from the RI Department of Health discussed skin cancer risks and sun pro-tection. Their presentations included handouts with photos of some common skin conditions as well as discussions on preven-tion and when to seek medical attention for questionable skin blemishes.

The RI Department of Health has posters available to any facility that would like one regardless of location (instate/out of state). The posters summarize several ways to protect against prolonged sun exposure and also offer visual photos on what to look for. Vigilant sunscreen use and UV protective clothing are recommended for everyday use. For more information on free literature, please contact George Andoscia at the RI Department of Health [email protected]. You can also find some information on our website by clicking here https://rigcsa.wildapricot.org/links .

The August 15th Stress Buster Day was held at Swansea Country Club in Swansea, MA. Our host Bill Coulter CGCS and his assistant Frank Vollaro, along with the entire Swansea staff, had the course in impeccable condition. The stress buster tournament is a perfect time of year to forget about the pressures of your own course for an afternoon and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow superintendents. It’s a great way to lift your spirits and gain that final push necessary to finish the season.

The afternoon barbecue was absolutely mouthwatering. Lou from Perella’s Ristorante in Warren RI, had a wonderful selec-tion and put on a grand feast of grilled chicken, barbecue ribs, baked beans, corn bread, coleslaw, potato salad and watermelon.

    President’s Message

The Dog Days are behind us and aeration season is upon us! Every season has its challenges and it is nice to be through the majority of the summer stress with-out too many challenges. After last season, we all deserve the break.

We had a great day at Allendale Country Club for the annual RHO-COD Cup with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Cape Cod. Thanks to our host Dan McDermott for providing a great course. Unfortunately we were unable to win back the Cup.

The night time temperatures seemed to break in mid-August giving the turf a much needed break from the stress of summer heat. Anyone who played in the Stress Buster at

Swansea Country Club was treated to great conditions on both courses and barbeque at the turn from Perella’s. Thank you to our hosts – Superintendent Bill Coulter and Owner Larry Doyle.

Please be sure to sign up for the September meeting at Kirkbrae Country Club, Individual Championship / New England Team Championship qualifier.

This year’s Scholarship and Research Tournament will be held on October 3 at Carnegie Abbey Club. This is always a great day so don’t miss it!
