WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING a fore-

cast on the fly, you can’t beat

transiting Saturn. It’s the No. 1

best indicator of possible trouble ahead,

and people always appreciate the heads

up, even when the news isn’t good.

When Saturn is in the 1st house we tend

to feel depressed, unloved, tired, mis-

understood, and old. If it hits a planet or

two in there it often indicates illness or a

situation you will be personally involved

in. If it conjoins the ruler of the 12th, for

instance, it’s time for a home burglary

system and one should always double

check one’s hospitalization forms to make

sure they’re up to date.

If Saturn hits the ruler of the 10th there

will be some stress at work. If it hits the

ruler of the 6th, it’s a confirmation of the

health problems. At the very least a good

cold with a hefty bout of fever and a sore

throat could be headed your way.

Psychologists tell us colds are a way we

“mourn” for something in our lives and

it’s a good one to keep in mind. We get

down in the dumps about all kinds of

things in life. Especially with Saturn going

through House One.

Along about the time it heads for House

Two we think it will be a relief. Sorry.

That’s when you feel poor, broke, and

headed for bag lady status. Actually, it’s a

good time to organize your finances, start

a family budget system and figure out

how much more you can put away for

retirement.

Saturn’s work is surprisingly reliable. If all

you know is a man’s sun sign, a

conjunction by transiting Saturn will have

to do with his career, his love life, and his

income. Love, money, and health are the

three biggies most of us want to know

about and any Saturn transit will tell us as

it circles the zodiac.

Pope Francis IArgentine astrologer Claudia Rizzi has

obtained a copy of the birth certificate of

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis I,

which quotes a birth time of 9:00 pm. This

puts his Ascendant at 10º Cancer. His

birth date is December 17, 1936 (see right).

Pope Frances I has been moving to reform

the inner workings of the Vatican, and

Saturn will make a station opposite his

Uranus in November. This will be a

challenge to his authority, but Jupiter,

transiting his 1st house, will be protective

and give him the edge in any difficulties.

Jupiter’s passage through the 1st is

extremely helpful at this time for his

dealings with the public. Forces behind

the scene (Mercury, ruling 12 in his 7th)

are being undercut as Uranus in Aries

squares that position.

That Saturn station will also square his

Venus, and the funds of the Vatican bank,

which have been under severe scrutiny,

may prove to be much less than reported,

or there will be some serious irregularity

found about them.

Jupiter TransitsBut if we are looking for a good event, use

transiting Jupiter. It is always casting its

happy thoughts on whatever house it is

transiting, too. Back in the old days

before modern medicine got so efficient at

keeping us healthy, Jupiter was called

“The Preserver,” and it’s been saving us

for years from bigger troubles than we’ve

had. When it crosses the Ascendant it’s a

great indication of recovery from a health

problem, depression, or lack of

opportunity in life.

QUICK FORECASTING TOOLS cont’d from p. 1

please turn to p. 3

Jupiter is like a big fat

Santa with all kinds of

goodies to bestow. It

brings parties, new

friends, interest in new

sports or outdoor activity

and weight gain,

probably from the parties.

A 10th house transit is

almost always promotion

on the job unless your

natal Jupiter is in real

trouble. A 2nd house

transit will bring more

money for you and a

chance to help somebody

out. True, you may have

bigger bills, but the

wherewithal will be there

to deal with them.

Jupiter’s ability to be of

help in your life

depends a lot on how

well it was placed in

your natal chart. An

angular Jupiter with a

couple good aspects in

a good sign will

bring you a whole

range of things that are

helpful. In Cancer or

one of its own signs

such as Sagittarius or

Pisces, it blossoms.

But if Jupiter is

transiting one of

Saturn’s signs, such as

Aquarius, or Virgo,

where it’s debilitated, it

can’t do its best work.

And if it’s not in good

shape in your chart, it’s

like he’s wearing a suit too tight and can’t

get the opportunities out of his pocket. A

lot of opportunities pass you by and you

will have to scramble to get there on your

own.

Johnny DeppJohnny Depp (see above) is in the news

for his recent separation from the mother

of his children and transiting Neptune at

3º Pisces is opposite his Mars at 3º Virgo

(ruling his house of partners). His latest

movie The Lone Ranger is earning him

some of his most critical comments in a

long time, with Saturn

transiting his 1st house. There will be

more as it moves further into Scorpio and

crosses his Neptune later this year and

next. Helping him will be the transit of

Jupiter as it moves into late Cancer and

Leo next year in his 10th house of career.

He will likely escape any problems with

his career.

Planetary StationsThe next best thing in forecasting is a

good planetary station. In fact, all the

planetary stations are aids to forecasting.

QUICK FORECASTING TOOLS cont’d from p. 2

I once did a lecture and asked for a chart out

of the audience and forecast a whole year’s

events just from Mercury stations as they

struck the chart. And, since I did it blind, for

the previous year, the woman whose chart it

was could confirm everything I said. The

stations were the only aspect I used. Tran-

sits by themselves are not nearly so helpful.

It takes a station to focus the energies in a

particular area in the zodiac and if you have

planets there, you can see quickly what’s

likely to happen. The woman’s Mercury

made stations on some of her key

placements as well as an angle. It was an

important year and included job change.

Anyone can do this with a little practice.

Forecasting means to combine the

aspect—the Mercury station square Mars

ruling the 5th house, for instance—with

the degree. Aspects are just like romance,

closer is better. A tight square such as I’ve

described could bring an accident to an

athlete, a romance to a young person,

trouble with one of the children to a

parent or difficulty getting one’s vacation

set, for the older person with a busy job.

That’s what I mean about combining what

you know. The age of the person whose

chart it is, their situation in life, and their

desires are all apt to be part of a successful

forecast. After all, it’s silly to predict

marriage to somebody who’s already

married. It helps to know something about

the person you’re forecasting for. If it’s

you, you still need to remember what you

know about yourself—your age, whether

you have children and so on.

Three planets in the chart are involved in

change: the Moon, Mercury and Uranus.

The Moon’s changes as it moves around

the chart on a monthly basis are apt to be

small ones. In a solar return or a secondary

progress, the importance can be con-

siderable. Mercury stations and positions are

equally likely to be important, especially if

Mercury rules one of your natal angles.

But far and away the most dynamic change

can be brought about by Uranus. This is a

once-in-a-lifetime biggie when it hits a planet.

Unless you live past 84 (and a lot of us

don’t) you’re not likely to see it go over one

of your placements again. That’s how long it

takes to circle the zodiac and some planets

won’t ever be hit twice unless you live to be

150. Not likely.

So treasure your Uranus transit. For good

or bad, it will bring excitement, change and

a new development in your life and can

alter your whole path for the next 50 years.

Many people first start astrology lessons

with a Uranus transit and end up in the

astrology business, much to their

surprise. Others put their toes in the

political waters and they’re off and

running.

And the kind of men and women who pop

into your life under Uranus transits of

your Sun and Moon can turn out to be

the most important people you ever meet.

Uranus will affect an entire decanate—

that’s 10 degrees—of a sign at once so be

sure to keep your eye on it when it gets

near a significant spot. Mercury stations

need to be pretty close and the Moon

should be exact.

International Space StationTransiting Saturn is sitting on the Sun of

Expedition I of the International Space

Station’s Sun but Jupiter is trine from the

9th house, suggesting support of the

project by other nations which want to

see it succeed. However, there are

problems and delays (Saturn) with getting

it underway. The Saturn station in

November at 5º Scorpio will prompt

Congress (ruler of 11th house) to protest

expenditures for a project which seems to

have one delay after another. NASA (Sun

ruling manager of project) will be on the

hot seat.

QUICK FORECASTING TOOLS cont’d from p. 3

So there you have it—a quick outline of

how to do some forecasting and be

surprisingly accurate. Take a few charts of

well-known people and try them out. With

a little practice you’ll get comfortable

before you know it and you’ll find

yourself forecasting nearly all the time

when you look at a chart.

Have a friend heading off to college and

you see Uranus heading for their 9th

house Jupiter? Sounds like a change of

venue, doesn’t it? Watch and when

Uranus passes over that 9th house

Jupiter, your friend may end up at a

different institution altogether.

And you saw it coming.

All charts are drawn for Geocentric,

Tropical, Placidus, and True Nodes.

PAT GEISLER of Grafton, OH began work

as a professional astrologer in 1969 and

taught and lectured extensively in the

years since then. She had an active

consulting career before retiring in 2011.

Pat is a member of AFAN, NCGR, and

ISAR and served on the AFAN Steering

Committee. Many of her articles have

appeared online as well as in the public

media and astrological publications.

Pat’s books “The Plain Vanilla Astrolo-

ger” and “Chocolate Sauce: The Plain

Vanilla Astrologer’s Guide to the Art of

Practicing Astrology” were just pub-

lished by ACS Publications. She is also a

retired journalist with both state and

national awards for writing, editing and

photography. Pat is a widow with four

children and five superior grandchildren.

LAST YEAR ASTROLOGER CHRIS BRENNAN

garnered quite a bit of publicity for

his coverage of the presidential

election through his website, The Political

Astrology Blog. His successful prediction

about the outcome of the election was

cited by ABC News, Fox News, and

Reuters. Given the important political role

of Philadelphia, which is the site of this

year’s NCGR Conference, and that Chris is

one of the speakers lecturing at the

conference, we wanted to talk to him about

his work with political astrology.

Stephanie Gailing: Congratulations on

the success of the Political Astrology Blog

last year. Could you talk a little bit about

how you started the blog?

Chris Brennan: Sure. After the excite-

ment of the 2008 presidential election, my

friend Patrick Watson and I realized that

there was a need for a centralized source

for news and information related to

political astrology. In particular, some of

the issues with the birth data of thecandidates during the 2008 election caused

us to want to have a place to publicly

compile different reports, in order to keep

track of which candidates we had good

birth times for and which we didn’t. So, we

picked out a reasonably auspicious

election and then launched the blog

shortly before Inauguration Day in 2009.

SG: You seem to put an emphasis on

collecting birth data as part of your focus

with the blog.

CB: Definitely. Patrick put a lot of effort

into collecting candidates’ birth times in

the lead up to the election and kept a

running tally of whom we did and did not

have data for. At one point these efforts

really paid off, as we were able to obtain

and publish the birth certificate of Paul

Ryan on our blog two months before he

was announced as Mitt Romney’s running

mate.

SG: In April of 2012 you issued a predic-

tion that Obama would win the presidential

election later that year. Could you talk a

little bit about what techniques you used

to make that prediction?

CB: Since we had birth times for both of

the candidates, we focused on the natal

charts of Obama and Romney. We primarily

used a Hellenistic timing technique known

Interview with Chris Brennan by Stephanie Gailing

as Zodiacal Releasing, which was only

recently recovered about 10 or 15 years

ago from a 2nd century Greek text. The

technique works surprisingly well at

timing peak periods in a person’s career,

which is particularly useful when you are

trying to determine, say, whether someone

will become president of a country on a

specific date.

The technique also provides other useful

information, which led us to predict that

Romney’s campaign would start to falter

around October 13 and that there was

something about the election that

wouldn’t be settled for Romney until a few

weeks after Electional Day, specifically

between November 26-29. The first

prediction was validated by the work of

the New York Times columnist and

statistician Nate Silver, who said that

according to his model Romney’s chances

of winning were at their highest on

October 12 and then sharply declined after

that date.

The second prediction was validated

when Romney took the unusual step of

visiting the White House on November 29

for a private meeting with Obama. Of

course, the main prediction itself—that

Obama would win the election—also

turned out to be true, although we felt that

these two additional facets of our election

prediction helped to set us apart from

what some of the other astrologers were

saying. They also helped validate the

usefulness of the technique that we

used.

SG: Could you talk a little bit about how

the technique works?

CB: It is a little bit too complicated to get

into specifics, but I can talk about it a little

bit. The two main things that the tech-

nique is based on are planetary periods

and the so-called Arabic parts. In Zodiacal

Releasing, the Part of Fortune and the Part

of Spirit are used in order to determine the

starting point for the timing sequence. If

you want to study a person’s career, as we

did for the presidential election, then you

start from the sign that contains the Part

of Spirit. You then attribute a certain

number of years to that sign based on the

planetary period of its ruler. Here are the

please turn to p. 5

page 5

CHRIS BRENNAN INTERVIEW cont’d from p. 4

years for each of the signs: Aries and

Scorpio: 15 years; Taurus and Libra: eight

years; Gemini and Virgo: 20 years; Cancer:

25 years; Leo: 19 years; Sagittarius and

Pisces: 12 years; Capricorn: 27 years;

Aquarius: 30 years.

Whatever sign the Part of Spirit falls in,

the ruler of that sign is activated for the

number of years associated with that sign.

Once those years have elapsed, the timing

sequence moves to the next sign in

zodiacal order, and then that sign and its

ruler become activated for the number of

years associated with it. After those years

are up, you move to the next sign, and so

on. Once you know what sign is activated

during a specific part of a person’s life,

you want to pay attention to what planets

are aspecting both the sign and its ruler,

since that will tell you about the quality of

the period. The really interesting point

though is that people tend to hit periods

of heightened activity and importance

when the signs that are angular from the

Part of Fortune are activated. In some

presidential elections that is really the key

to figuring out who will win.

SG: Will you be teaching the technique

that you used to predict the outcome of

the election at the NCGR conference?

CB: Yes, I’m actually going to be giving

a post-conference workshop in which I

teach attendees how to use Zodiacal

Releasing. Our primary focus will be on

how to use a variation of the technique

that I developed in order to determine

when the most important romantic

relationships will occur in a person’s life.

During the process I will also explain how

you can use the technique to time peak

periods in a person’s career as well, as we

did with Obama and Romney for the

presidential election.

During my main lecture at the conference

I’m going to present a recent discovery

about a set of the original seven condi-

tions of “affliction,” which are very

specific planetary placements that indicate

major problems in the part of the chart

signified by the planet. One of these

specific conditions actually showed up in

the inception chart for when Romney

accepted the nomination at the Republi-

can National Convention last fall, which

helped us to confirm our earlier prediction

based on his natal chart that he would not

win the election in November.

I will also cover a corresponding set of

seven positive “bonification” conditions,

one of which showed up in Obama’s

nomination chart at the Democratic

National Convention. It turns out that

there really are some valuable techniques

from the older astrological traditions that

have been lost over the course of the past

2000 years of Western astrology. Now,

certainly I don’t think that that means that

we have to forget all of the new develop-

ments and advancements that have taken

place in modern astrology over the past

century, but there are certainly some

techniques from the ancient traditions that

are worth recovering. I look forward to

sharing some of them at the conference.

education program beginning September 5, 2013. This course is geared for NCGR-

PAA’s Level II Certification, but you do not have to be on track for the exams to

participate in this class. It is for all students of astrology!

The class is offered in two parts: the math and non-math. Studies include a review of

Level I, then on to transits, secondary progressions, eclipses and more! For a full

description of the course, registration, and details, please go to our website,

www.geocosmic.org.

Let me vouch for Meira’s skill, expertise, and generosity as a teacher. As head of faculty

in the New York City Chapter, I have worked with Meira for many years in our local

education program and I can promise you she’s tops! Our on-line study program will

continue later in the fall with a class from Jackie Slevin, another terrific teacher who I’m

glad to vouch for too. We’ll have more details from Jackie next time.

FYI, our current journal is entitled

Everything under the Sun: The Best of

Memberletter and More! (Catchy title,

huh?) We hoped to assure its delivery by

snail mail to you by the conference in

August. However, we’re not sure we can

trust the USPS with that schedule, even

though it has already been mailed to our

membership. So we will be providing a link

for the journal. But don’t worry! It

doesn’t mean the journal is going digital.

It just means we want you to have it

sooner rather than later as well as later

and not just sooner. So, look for it in your

e-inbox this month, and in your mailbox

over the next few weeks.

It contains some of the best articles that

appeared in earlier versions of

memberletter as well as some brand new

(and terrific) articles by Gene Shaw and

Alex Walker.

Lastly, there is some good news and bad

news about our former Publications

Director, Loretta Lopez. She recently

resigned from the Board to move on with

her work. That’s the bad news. The good

news is she agreed to stay on as the

graphic designer of upcoming journals,

and very good news that is, indeed,

because she always does a smashing job!

Further good news is our new Director of

Publications is Trish Buckley, whose day

job has been in printing and publishing

for many years, and we’re looking forward

to her contributions on the Board.

And remember, “Everything under the

Sun,” Philadelphia, August 2013,

square!

THE NCGR BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL HOLD ELECTIONS THIS FALL. Three positions are

open, and the NCGR Membership is encouraged to nominate candidates to

office. The Election Committee invites nominees for Chair, and for two General

Directors.

Serving on the NCGR Board of Directors is the kind of experience that enriches astrolo-

gers with the knowledge of doing great things for their community. If you, or someone

you know, would be interested in running for office, please make sure you get your

nomination in by October 1, 2013.

The duties for Chair are stated as follows in NCGR’s bylaws:

“The Chairman of the Board shall also be and function as the President of NCGR, and

shall have authority to appoint standing and ad-hoc committees of the Board in

accordance with the provisions of these by-laws.”

General Directors, according to NCGR’s bylaws, must be capable of performing these

duties:

a. Active participation in at least two annual National Board Meetings, as well as

essential business which may be conducted between meetings via either email or

conference call.

b. Demonstration of continuing interest in and promotion of the purposes of NCGR as

given in Article II of the by-laws.

c. Willingness to assume responsibility for a particular Board position.

d. Submission of anticipated budgetary needs for self and for department (if a depart-

ment head), to the Treasurer by a date which shall be announced prior to Executive

Committee’s preparation of annual budget.

Serving on the National Board of NCGR is a big responsibility, but it is an opportunity

to serve the community in ways that will make a lasting impact. Meeting other astrolo-

gers for whom being of service is of utmost importance is another reward you can reap

from becoming a Board member. If you have talents to offer and the desire to share your

ideas, then don’t delay! The best leaders step forward when they are called to serve,

and this is the moment to do so.

To submit your nomination:

Tell the President of your local chapter you would like to run. You will be immediately

nominated! Or produce a petition with the signatures of 10 NCGR members supporting

your nomination, and submit it. You will also be asked to provide a short biographical

sketch stating why you want to be a Board Member or the Chair, and what qualifies you

to do so. This statement will be published to the entire membership prior to the

weekend.

Submit your nominations, or any questions you might have, to the Election Committee

through:

IN TV LAND BC (BEFORE CABLE), it’s hard

to believe, but late night television

was only a test pattern and an endless

droning tone.

In 1954, NBC revolutionized the midnight

airwaves with an entertainment program

called the The Tonight Show. Back then,

the host was Jack Paar, a New York

intellectual with a dry sense of humor,

and his guests were not Hollywood movie

stars plugging hit movies, but rather the

literati, politicos, theatre people, and the

comedians of the time.

Steve Allen came next in 1956, and he

emphasized comedy, sometimes broad, but

always smart, intelligent, and really witty.

However, it was, of course, Johnny

Carson who slowly, but surely, through

the 1960s, made late night television what

it is today. His chair began in 1962, and

largely through the time of the conjunc-

tion of Uranus-Pluto, Corporate America

(Pluto) paid closer attention to television

(Uranus). Late night TV became big

bucks, and eventually it turned into a war

between the stations. Interesting that he

left the chair in 1992 after a full Saturn

cycle.

So powerful did Mr. Carson become that

he took over ownership of the show, and

NBC renamed it The Tonight Show

Starring Johnny Carson.

In May 1972, he moved the show from its

origins in New York to Los Angeles,

where it attracted more glamorous, trendy,

and popular guests. In the December

2004-January 2005 issue of memberletter,

I wrote an article about the astrology of

The Tonight Show, and its publication

sadly and eerily coincided that week with

Mr. Carson’s death.

What prompted that

article, though, was

NBC’s announcement of

Jay Leno’s eventual

retirement in 2009 and

next in line was Conan

O’Brien. Of course, most

of us know the debacle

that turned out to be!

(For reference, the

article, “Heeeere’s

Conan!,” is on my

website, www.astrojohn.com.)

On April 3, 2013, NBC announced Leno’s

retirement for the second time, and this

time the heir apparent is Jimmy Fallon. This

was not much of a surprise, but the real

shake-up is that The Tonight Show is

moving back to New York where it all

started! That is expected to take place in

February 2014, after the winter Olympics,

to which the television rights are also

owned by NBC. So, imagine the blitzkrieg

of promotion that will be then!

The Chart of The Tonight ShowUsing the first broadcast as the birth data

(see above) the natal chart of The Tonight

Show reveals some uncanny

characteristics.

The MC at the end of Pisces is on the

Cardinal Axis, indicating an appeal to the

world. Interesting, too, it marks the end of

Pisces and approaches Aries, just as every

show ended each day and crossed over

midnight to the next day.

The MC forms a Yod with Pluto in Leo and

Neptune and Mercury in Libra, an apt

astrological description of an undying

interview show that seems to have a life of

its own. (By the way, Mr. Carson’s Sun in

late Libra lights up this Yod too.) All of the

planets (not counting Chiron as a planet)

are below the horizon, the “late night” part

of the horoscope, so to speak. The

prominence of the influence of the Moon,

ruler of the night, is seen in the Cancer

Ascendant, four planets in the 4th house,

and the natal New Moon. All of these also

indicate the importance of the public’s

feeling of familiarity with the show as well

as its tenacity to remain at #1.

Its stamina is also seen in its Mars in

Capricorn on the North Node, and its

longevity comes from the Venus and

Saturn in Scorpio. (We’ll soon see how

this Saturn is especially significant in the

synastry with Mr. Carson’s chart as well as

in the current trends.)

The show began on the New Moon phase

in Libra, offering promise and potential for

future growth.

Jupiter, god of grace, good fortune and a

strong constitution, sits in its exalted sign,

Cancer, conjoined to Uranus (television), in

the all-important 1st house, and trine to the

MC. This also promises a long and healthy

life, growth and popularity. (Its square to

Mercury and Neptune in Libra suggests

“interviews with movie stars and other

forms of fluffy communications.” It did not

start out that way, but became its signature

in the development and please turn to p. 11

survivability of the show). The collective

configuration of Jupiter, Uranus and

Neptune, by the way, also saw the start of

The Wonderful World of Disney as well as

the rise of I Love Lucy, two other shows

that did not begin as classics, of course,

but wound up that way, i.e., the good luck

and idolization of television.

The Astrology of Current EventsBetween the announcement on April 3,

2013, about the new reign from Leno to

Fallon, and the actual change in February

2014, and shortly thereafter, there are

some very obvious astrological indica-

tions of transition. Since the show is al-

most 60 years old, the progressed MC is

sextile to the natal MC, indicating the maj-

or change in sign from Taurus to Gemini.

This implies the progressed IC is chang-

ing signs from Scorpio to Sagittarius,

making for a change in home for the show

too. Similarly, the progressed Sun is

sextile to the natal Sun, making for a

smooth transition from one host to

another host (unlike the hostile shift from

Leno to O’Brien in 2009).

Also in a similar pattern, the progressed

Moon is in a new phase, as it was at that

start of the show, representing a new

beginning, a fresh start, a clean slate.

(When O’Brien took the chair, the lunar

phase was closing, not an indication of a

propitious start to things).

Progressed Mercury is already conjoined

to natal Venus. These are the two rulers of

the 4th house, symbolizing a joining with

the roots of the show in New York.

Furthermore, these planets are in trine to

the natal Ascendant, making for an easy

transition in the identity of the show to its

past (Cancer). Something to note is, in

2016, early in Fallon’s run, Pluto will turn

retrograde by progression. That’s a big

deal! Coming from the 2nd and ruling the

5th, let’s see if there’s a reversal of

fortunes for the show, or maybe a change

in what entertainment (5th) is appreciated

(2nd), or perhaps a new spin-off, i.e., “a

new baby” (5th house).

Lorne Michael, famed producer of

Saturday Night Live and Fallon’s current

late night show, and one of the more

powerful people affiliated with NBC, not

to mention, a Scorpio, is not a producer of

the old or new Tonight Show. But perhaps

the progressed Pluto SR will make for an

opportunity for him to come on board as

producer by then. For some mundane

matters, astrologers can only wait and see.

The Relocation of The Tonight ShowThe most interesting thing about the

relocation chart of The Tonight Show to

Los Angeles is the emphasis of Mars as

the only planet above the horizon in the

8th house. Not only is it a singleton of

sorts there, but it is also strengthened by

the exaltation in Capricorn and its

conjunction to the North Node. And once

the show moved to LA, the joke became

how Johnny Carson was getting in bed

with all couples in America!

The Ascendant moved into Gemini and the

term, “talk show” was popularized. With

the Moon no longer the ruler of the chart,

the move to LA was seen by many as a

betrayal of its New York origins and

identity.

The timing factors, however, were very

clear in May 1972. The progressed MC

opposed the natal Moon. Talk about a

new home for new career opportunities!

The Ascendant had just passed into

“showbizzy” Leo too.

Progressed Mars at 25° Capricorn formed

a t-square with Jupiter-Uranus and Nep-

tune. That does not necessarily imply a

move, but it certainly indicates a new

direction in career. A solar eclipse at the

time of the move activated this t-square to

boot!

The transits of the relocation are even

more obvious. Pluto was stationing at 29°

Virgo, on the IC of the natal chart of The

Tonight Show, clearly indicating the end

of an era where the home is concerned,

and of course, the beginning of a new era.

Transiting Uranus was heading for a con-

junction to the natal Moon, suggesting a

surprising shift of focus in the home.

Interestingly, transiting Neptune was at 4°

Sagittarius at the time of the relocation.

And of course, transiting Neptune at the

time of the relocation back to New York is

in the square position at 4° Pisces! Fur-

thermore, Fallon, who was born in 1974,

has his natal Neptune at 7° Sagittarius.

So, again, let’s see how written-in-stone

the new show with Fallon really is. The

most important feature of the relocated

chart for The Tonight Show is the connec-

tion of its angles with those of Mr. Car-

son’s natal angles. The MC and IC re-

verse! Within a few minutes of 13°

Aquarius (television) and Leo (enter-

tainment), the MC and IC reverse

positions. Such synastry connections

represent a deep “knowing,” merging,

attachment, a “soul” connection, given

the nature of the IC, and a transcendence

through time.

The Everlasting Power

of the HoroscopeEven though Johnny Carson is long gone

from this earth, and he has not been a

host of The Tonight Show for a generation

or two, he is legendary, an icon in his field,

and the one against whom all others will

be measured (at least, for another

generation or two).

Celebrities and political figures who have

a prominence in Scorpio, in the 8th house,

or from the planet, Pluto, may die

physically, but they keep coming back

from the grave, not to mention, often

making millions for their estates. Some

examples are JFK, Marilyn Monroe, James

Dean, and Elvis. Johnny Carson is in

these ranks too, and his chart is still alive!

His progressions for 2013-14 include the

Sun at 29° Capricorn, in square to his natal

Sun, ruler of his natal MC, indicating a

major change in his career direction, but

the shift into a new sign, Aquarius, is an

even bigger change, i.e., the end of a era

in career and the start of new era!

Following through, the progressed MC is

also square the natal MC, also indicating a

significant change in work and home

(progressed IC square natal IC).

Mr. Carson’s progressed Ascendant is

already conjoined with his natal Jupiter,

making for growth, opportunity, expansion

and risk. Between this and the

aforementioned transit of Neptune, we

think NBC said, “Why not move back to

New York with Jimmy?”

His progressed Moon next February will

be 15° Aries, which will turn his natal

HEEEEERE’S JIMMY cont’d from p. 10

please turn to p. 12

page 12

HEEEEERE’S JIMMY cont’d from p. 11

t-square into a Grand Square, often a

trigger of great change.

Transiting Jupiter is also passing over this

t-square, providing some vision, confid-

ence and Divine Intervention, which,

again, perhaps is not what Conan O’Brien

had.

Mr. Carson’s transits for 2013-14 include

the all-important Saturn in Scorpio over

his Ascendant, Mercury and his eventual

Saturn Return. Transiting Saturn also

squares his MC and IC. This could

represent a new identity for the show that

he might not have created, but “branded,”

as well as a new home for career purposes.

Interesting, too, given The Tonight Show

rose to power during the conjunction of

Uranus and Pluto, the square between

Uranus and Pluto is going to activate Mr.

Carson’s t-square with natal Pluto, Moon-

Jupiter and Mars in the initial years of

Fallon’s run. So, let’s see how long the

smooth transition lasts.

In the little picture of time, in April 2013,

when the announcement about Fallon was

made, there was a Lunar Eclipse at 5°

Scorpio, right on Mr. Carson’s Ascendant,

bringing him back to life, and the Solar

Eclipse opposite his Saturn makes for the

new phase of growth ahead of “him” a/k/a

The Tonight Show.

Just a last word about Mr. Carson’s natal

chart. In a word or two, he was known for

his class and power. Were truer words

ever spoken about a Libra man with so

many prominent Scorpio planets before?

The Later HostsThere is no accurate birth data for any of

the ensuing hosts after Mr. Carson. Nev-

ertheless, just working with Sun signs,

there does seem to be justice to their

potential. Jay Leno, a natal Taurus, got a

hand in the “who, what, when, where,

why” of his replacement. Evidently, that’s

what he wanted, but didn’t have, during

the O’Brien incident. Conan O’Brien, an

Aries, got to pioneer a late night TV talk

show on cable in an attempt to re-invent

the genre, and he is having a good deal of

success in his attempt there. Jimmy Fallon,

with the Sun at 26° Virgo, stated he

surrendered the decision of his future on

NBC late night TV to

Leno and NBC, and he

wound up with the new

reign. Fortunately, his

synastry is far better

than O’Brien’s.

Fallon’s Sun sits at the

bottom of the chart for

The Tonight Show. His

Mars conjoins

The Tonight Show’s natal

Sun, representing his

youthful and energizing

kick in the butt of the

show, delicate though it

might be in Libra. And

Fallon’s natal Saturn at

17° Cancer conjoins the

Ascendant of the chart

of The Tonight Show

should offer some

direction and staying

power.

Closing RemarksThere will never be

another Carson, but

let’s see what happens

when Fallon is given a

chance in the chair. The

transition looks promis-

ing and smooth, despite

some bumps later down

in the run of the show,

but he seems to have the

ability to endure with it.

And now I have to try to

get some sleep!

Postcript: After the submission of this

article, but before its publication, on the

station of Saturn at 4° Scorpio, iTunes

announced the availability of selected

segments of “The Tonight Show Starring

Johnny Carson” for sale on an app for

$1.99, and TCM is launching a special

TV series of Mr. Carson’s most well-

known interviews with his guests includ-

ing his animal segments. So, once again,

Johnny Carson rises from the grave.

The 12th House: The Great Escape by Joni Patry

THE 12TH HOUSE RULES WAYS WE LEAVE

or escape the world. There are many

ways we temporarily leave our

everyday routine. The unconscious ways

we create an escape are hospitals and

prisons. Sometimes we need a break from

life and films, movies, daydreaming, sleep,

and vacations give relief. An escape from

the past and confines of the environment

may take one to foreign countries.

There are conscious and unconscious

ways we leave this world. Conscious

ways are escape through films, movies,

vacations, ashrams, convents, and

religious cults that exclude the world.

Generally ways that we leave the world

based on not facing our problems can

only push the problems to a deeper level.

The problems will fester into resentments

that control our behavior on an uncon-

scious level. The 12th house rules the

unconscious, which inhabits the mecha-

nisms in our mind that motivate our

behavior. Clues of deep-rooted fears are

symbolically revealed through our dreams

when we sleep. The 12th house rules

dreams and sleep.

Because the 12th house is the past and

pertains to emotions, difficult planets here

can lock someone into being controlled by

their past. They must work on detach-

ment. Another means of escape that can

change our perspective are vacations,

which get us away from our routine. We

are more objective when we break the

monotony and see things from a different

vantage point. Brief escapes from our

world can be in the form of movies, which

are a reflection of our world through

illusionary images projected in photogra-

phy ruled by Neptune. Many famous

movie stars have a powerful 12th house

for they can cast themselves into imagi-

nary roles and become the roles that they

are playing.

The 12th house is the end of the chart and

zodiac (Pisces), therefore it is the edge

beyond this world. This is the final

frontier as in space for it is beyond this

world. Astronauts and astronomers have

a strong 12th house for they think outside

the limits of this world, which is the 12th

house. As the final frontier, it takes in the

vast horizons of space travel and discov-

eries beyond this world. This is a journey

into the other dimensions, space, or

higher consciousness. Many astronauts

and astronomers have powerful 12th

house planets.

Professors who spend much of their life in

study and research have planets in the

12th house because when the 12th house

is strong you feel the need to isolate

yourself in a world of research and study.

This is a very individual act to explore the

realms of deep study. This requires

isolation, solitude and inner reflection.

Drugs, alcohol and sleep are ways to

repress emotions and feelings. Neptune is

the great dissolver, which means the very

thing that prevents us from knowing our

truth will be stripped from our lives in

order to see the truth. Neptune and the

12th house rule the unconscious. When

the unconscious is made conscious we

will heal our lives through our emotional

body.

The 12th house is higher consciousness

and our quest for altered consciousness.

When we let go of ourselves to unite with

another we feel euphoric as in the sexual

union. This is a part of the co-creation

process ruled by Jupiter and the ability to

create. Jupiter rules reproduction and the

2nd chakra, the reproductive area. It is in

the process of sexual energy that we

release ourselves to a wave of feeling and

emotion.

The 12th house indicates behind the

scenes or the areas that are hidden from

the world, a place of solitude, behind

closed doors. It is our private selves. It is

our past and remembering past experi-

ences that relate to us through emotions

and feelings, nostalgia, reminiscing, and

remembering are represented by the 12th

At the end of each day we surrender and

retire through sleep. When we fall asleep

it is much like a death process we let go of

each day, similarly when we die we pass

into a resting phase from life before rebirth

represented by the 1st house.

This is the house of endings as in

retirement from a career or moving to a

retirement home.

As in the process of finally falling to

sleep, the same can be understood as we

surrender to death. In this process we

surrender all our fears and our attach-

ments that kept us in the chains we self-

created in our lives. Our fears and resent-

ments keep us attached to the conditions

we experience in our life. But it is within

this house that we come to terms with our

life’s lessons, surrender and let go which

can be thought of as a form of forgive-

ness.

The12th house rules the unknown such as

our fears, secrets or apparent karmas that

come out of seeming nowhere. These are

outer experiences of our darkest fears.

Thieves, robbers, and hidden enemies are

people who secretly attack. This can be

people talking secretly behind your back

or blackmail. This is the house of secret

enemies, meaning you don’t know where

an attack is coming from.

The 12th house rules places of the night

meaning bars, strip clubs, backstage or

any places behind the scenes, hidden or

secret places of escape from the daylight

and awareness. This house is before the

dawn of day and these are the places

people go at late night before the dawn.

The sixth house pertains to health and

healing professions such as doctors,

nurses and healers. The twelfth house as

the opposing house indicates healing

professions too, but on a public level as in

hospitals or large institutions.

The 12th house rules the feet. The feet

enable us to stand and give balance in the

world. The feet give us the ability to

please turn to p. 14

page 14

move, both walking and running. But a

very specific rulership of the 12th house is

the left eye. Whereas the 2nd house rules

eyesight and is specifically the right eye,

the 12th house is the left eye. The left side

of our body is controlled by the right side

of the brain indicating our intuitive and

creative center. The eyes give us sight;

therefore this is the house of intuitive

sight hidden from conscious or the

physical. This is the psychic sense to

know what is not seen.

Giving is an act of generosity and the 12th

house and Pisces rule charities. Loss and

expenditure are related to giving which

can be conscious or unconscious. If we

give to a charity, we are giving con-

sciously but loss incurred by gambling is

an unconscious loss. Orphanages are

charitable organizations ruled by the 12th

house as it is the 8th house from the 5th

house.

It is the place we come to as we come to

terms with the part of us that contains our

deepest fears, but this is the last phase

that brings us to the light or rebirth. It is

the darkest night before the dawn, so in

essence it can be the dark night of the

soul.

Our unconscious behavior creates results

that we believe are randomly happening to

us, calling it fate. Never believing we are

responsible for the conditions being

manifested. Essentially it is the violation

of the natural laws that will lead us to time

out, or time away from the world to

contemplate our actions. In reality, our

mind is creating our own prison.

In our understanding of the word forgive-

ness we believe it is to grant a gift to

circumstances or people who are unfor-

givable. The question is; how can this be

done with the need for justice? This sense

of unfairness magnifies more injustice per-

petuating a victim. The victim becomes so

magnified that more and more loss ensues.

I believe this is why the 12th house is the

house of loss. As the victim scenario con-

tinues, the victim becomes so overtly

righteous they actually are the perpetu-

ator of crimes and so called evil acts. The

victim attracts the perpetrator by its weak-

ness from continually dwelling on the past

hurts and cannot let go of the injustices.

This mindset develops within it deep

resentments which control and attract

seemingly unprovoked events. Most of

the time these resentments are hidden and

buried from the observer. But the true act

of forgiveness is to actually understand

the deep core issues behind resentments.

This realization comes from the wisdom of

why we feel injustice in our lives.

It all begins when others get something

we feel should be ours. As we sulk and

stew, bigger events occur impacting and

justifying our case as a victim and we

never come realize we are unable to

receive the good of life because we are

focalized on the injustices. Many resort to

religions as a means of escape from these

feelings since religions condone this

victim behavior (we are the sinner, original

sin, we cannot help ourselves) and we

cannot fathom we are the cause of our

own suffering. It is our reactions to the

stimulus in the environment that magnifies

the experiences and circumstances. We

have to come to a place of understanding

that it is our reactions to life’s situations

that determines our results in life. So, to

forgive is actually to understand our-

selves.

Why do people want to be a victim? In

their righteousness they need to be right.

Moral judgments are based on belief

systems taught in childhood. As children

we have no ability to discriminate and

what is taught becomes truth or law.

These are opinions of the personality and

earthly human laws. The 12th house is the

house of spiritual law, not manmade law.

As children we go through a phase where

we look at everything in terms of being

fair. You can hear the children saying,

“that’s not fair.” But clearly the situations

of unfairness come to those who focus on

being a victim. This grows into problems

in later life. This is what builds the

consciousness of the victim.

Victims never achieve their greatest

desires because on some level they feel it

isn’t fair, and never get anywhere in life.

They are always complaining, whining,

never coming up with any solutions.

Victims don’t take responsibility for their

actions because they are always blaming

others for their failures. When they cast

blame on others, the power to look at their

meaning the results of this house come to

us as a result of our actions. We will

receive exactly what we think we deserve.

We reap as we sow. This seems to imply

karma or the law of nature, which is cause

and effect. Our actions give the same re-

sults back. This is the time of give back,

for good or bad. But self-undoing can im-

ply self-destructive sabotage. A deep, ho-

nest look at our beliefs can help transform

our sense of self. Are we consumed with

our judgments based on beliefs formed at

an early age through religious or cultural

conditioning? Conscious awareness will

heal the unconscious cause and effect.

Jupiter Rules Sagittarius

and PiscesPisces is the 12th sign ruled by Jupiter. As

Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces

both signs relate to spirituality. As the 9th

sign and Sagittarius represent teachers,

learning, truth and laws. The negative side

of Sagittarius pertains to man-made laws

and justice, and the Pisces counterpart

relates to laws of spirituality or nature.

12TH HOUSE cont’d from p. 13part in the situation is given away, and no

change is possible. It is always the

parents, teachers, siblings, and spouse’s

fault. But it is when we are able to

understand our part in the problems that

the miracles happen.

Victims can be very controlling in a

passive aggressive way. They try to get

others to do what they want through guilt.

They are master manipulators, and when

people don’t fall for their ploys they go

deeper into their victimization consumed

with resentments, and anger based on

their feelings of personal injustice.

In the 12th house we come to realize past-

embedded resentments are the cause of

our life’s problems and it is time to release

the story of the victim. Our attachment to

our injustices must be released for the

process of forgiveness to occur. Forgive-

ness involves understanding the mecha-

nisms behind our behavior. Connection to

the Universal mind and not the individual

self gives this wisdom. The Universal God

is where we connect when we free our-

selves from all worldly attachments. These

attachments come from our personal

beliefs taught at an early age.

This is the house of our own self-undoing

Neptune and PiscesNeptune is the ruler of Pisces with Jupiter.

Jupiter, called Guru, is the teacher and

truth, while Neptune is an ethereal force of

beyond this world. Neptune as the god of

the seas and oceans is a force beyond our

control and will take us on emotional

journeys into the unconscious. Neptune

is a powerful force and shakes the world

with his trident.

Neptune was discovered around 1846. At

this time photography was beginning,

symbolic of Neptune’s creation of

illusions that seem real, as in photos or

films. This was the onset of screen movies

that would connect the world with collec-

tive trends and messages. Neptune is

about ecstasy, either the “high” received

through spiritual revelations or the “high”

received through drugs and alcohol. It is

connected with intoxication, art, music,

and dancing. It rules the illusions of the

world, spirituality, and psychic powers.

Neptune is the higher octave of Venus.

To realize the illusions of this world we

have to go through the emotional body or

feelings to understand reality. Everything

is an illusion and the only way out is to

connect with the Divine which is accessed

through the emotional body. This is why

the water houses are part of liberation.

We are all asleep as Neptune can indicate

the ways we stay asleep, stay in denial,

escape reality. The only reality comes with

awakening from the sleep of this world,

and this is where we retire when we die.

As we go to sleep at night, we retire from

the world of our lives here but we go into

another level of consciousness. Dreams

give impressions of our inner and true

reality in the same way we rest in peace

from our lives when we die in another

dimension or consciousness.

The keywords of Neptune are: Illusions,

deception, confusion, denial, drugs,

alcohol, fantasies, fog, dreams, romance,

glamour, spirituality, higher conscious-

ness, devotion, cults, the ocean, liquids,

oil and gas, sensitivity, psychic. Neptune

(Poseidon) was the stormy god of the

seas and ocean. The Greek myths connect

Neptune’s meanings to those of

Dionysus, the god of drunken ecstasy.

Pisces and the last nakshatra Revati

exemplify the urge to unite with the

ecstasy of the collective unconscious, as

the twelfth sign and twelfth house mark

the end of life in the material world.

Neptune is associated with Pisces.

This house is the evolution of the end of

life where the worldly attachments are

shed. It represents the aging process where

the world has lost its glamour, been there

and done that, letting go of the dream or

illusion and merging with the collective

unconscious. The ocean is a symbol of the

collective unconscious. It is through our

emotions and feelings that we are all

connected on this level. It is the final

frontier of letting go and dissolving the

resentments and fears of a lifetime. This is

the final and ultimate liberation of life.

From House to House The 12th House. It is the 12th from the

1st. It is the 1st from the 12th. The core

essence of this house is letting go of this

world. It is termed the house of loss, but it

is actually the escape from the attach-

ments and resentments of this world. It

rules any form of escape from this world.

There are many ways we detach or escape

from this world. To name a few; life in an

ashram, a prison, hospital, retreat, vaca-

tion, movies, imagination, meditation,

sleep and ultimately death.

The 12th house rules all these things. It

also rules the vast frontiers beyond this

world dealing with the vastness of space.

The 12th house has no boundaries. It is

related to the number 12 signifying

completion. When resentments are

released, forgiveness frees our soul and

love and compassion is realized, this is the

essence of God. These are the gifts of the

12th house. The 12th house is the

merging with the oneness, not the separ-

ation felt in the earthly world. This can be

seen as the sexual experience (bed pleas-

ures) as merging with another as one. The

higher side of this house relates to

connecting to the collective unconscious.

It is our involvement with charitable

organizations. It also rules foreign things

and countries, which are things and

people beyond our boundaries, aliens.

It is the 11th from the 2nd house. This

indicates large sums of money or our

desire for wealth and money. It is the 2nd

from the 11th house. It indicates the

wealth of our oldest sibling. Money

gained from friends. Large sums of money

given, as in charities.

It is the 10th from the 3rd house. This is

a career in the arts or travel. It is the career

of our siblings (especially the youngest).

It is the 3rd from the 10th house. This

represents the arms of the government,

therefore it has to do with governmental

agencies. It can indicate travel for your

career.

It is the 9th from the 4th house. This

house indicates our maternal grandfather

since it is our mother’s father. It is our

mother’s beliefs and spiritual views.

It is the 4th from the 9th house. It is our

father’s mother, therefore our paternal

grandmother. It can indicate the fixed

assets of our father. It is our father’s

homeland.

It is the 8th from the 5th house. This is

the house of the death or disgrace of

children (particularly the first born). It

could indicate problems with children, or

inability to have children, orphanages. It

is the 5th from the 8th house. This is the

house that reveals the depth of our mind.

It is our imagination.

It is the 7th from the 6th house. This is

the house of partnerships in the work

place. It is the 6th from the 7th house.

This is the house of the health of our

spouse. It may be indicative of our

spouse’s enemies.

Predictive Power of Eclipses by Ronnie Gale Dreyer

What is an Eclipse?

An Eclipse, or occultation, is

formed when the Sun or Moon

is obstructed from view. An eclipse of the

Moon, or lunar eclipse, can only occur on

the Full Moon (Sun opposite Moon),

when the Earth comes between the Sun

and the Moon and the Moon passes

through some portion of Earth’s shadow,

blocking some or all direct sunlight from

reaching the Moon.

An eclipse of the Sun, or solar eclipse,

can only occur on the New Moon (Sun

Moon conjunction) when the Moon

comes between the Sun and the Earth,

thereby blocking the Sun. When the

Moon’s shadow falls upon the Earth's

surface at that time, a portion of the Sun's

disk will be covered or 'eclipsed' by the

Moon.

A pair of eclipses, Solar and Lunar, which

occur within two weeks of each other,

takes place every six months. Sometimes

the lunar eclipse occurs first, followed by

the solar eclipse two weeks later, and

sometimes the solar occurs first, followed

by the lunar two weeks later. Sometimes

(like Summer 2009, Summer 2011, and

Spring 2013) they come in a set of three

eclipses that are each 14 days apart.

In 2013 there was a lunar eclipse on April

25, a solar eclipse on May 9, and a lunar

eclipse on May 25. Some astrologers have

said that the eclipses are more auspicious

when going from New Moon to Full Moon

because it is a waxing period of increase,

whereas going from Full Moon to New

Moon is a waning period of decrease. In

practice, I have not necessarily found that

to be the case.

What are the Lunar Nodes? What distinguishes a lunation (New or

Full Moon) from an eclipse is the place-

ment of the North and South Nodes close

to the Sun and Moon. Rather than planets

with shape or mass, the Nodes are simply

the places where the orbit of the Moon

intersects with the “orbit” of the Sun.

The point formed after the Moon has

traveled from South to North is called the

Ascending or North Node. It is more please turn to p. 17

page 17

commonly known in many cultures as the

Dragon’s Head. In India, where the nodes

are mythologically thought of as forming

a serpent, the North Node, or Rahu, is

aastrologically akin to a disembodied

head that devours and never digests,

thereby always wanting more. With Rahu

strong in the chart, the appetite is

insatiable, and the symbol is one of

uncontrollable eating, drinking, drugging,

sexual appetite, or simply ruthlessness,

and unrequited ambition. Rahu intensifies

any planet with which it comes into

contact, for better or worse. In Indian

astrology, Rahu is said to have the

qualities of Saturn. They are both material,

disciplined, and calculating.

The point formed after the Moon has

moved from North to South is called the

Descending or South Node, and is more

commonly known in many cultures as the

Dragon’s Tail. In India, the South Node is

called Ketu and is the tail, or body

without a head. There is heart but no

head, so it is inspirational and artistic, but

also wasteful, since it represents the tail

end, where excrement or waste material

goes. In the same way that Rahu intensi-

fies a planet with which it comes into con-

tact, Ketu wastes or obliterates whatever

it touches. In Indian astrology Ketu acts

like Mars. It is action-oriented, but also

obliterative and potentially violent.

As portrayed in Indian mythology,

eclipses are formed when Rahu and Ketu,

the head and tail of the demon, who was

cut in two by Lord Vishnu’s discus, are

fated to forever chase the Sun and Moon,

whose exposure of them to the Gods

caused their thirst for revenge; when they

reach the luminaries, and swallow them,

an eclipse is formed.

Because of the fact that the Nodes form

eclipses, which rob the heavens of the

Sun and Moon, they were considered in

Indian astrology to be malefic forces.

They rule foreigners, the unconventional,

the technical, drugs, excess, and that

which is most tempting and dangerous.

Eclipse and Nodal CyclesThe Nodal cycle is 18.6 years. That is the

time it takes each Node to go through the

zodiac, or for you to have a nodal

return—the Node returning to its natal

position. In half that time, the Nodes

return to their opposite place meaning that

the transiting South Node will reach the

place of the natal North Node, and the

transiting North Node will reach the place

of the natal South Node. It takes approxi-

mately 18 months for each Node to go

through one zodiacal sign whether it be

tropical or sidereal.

In Indian astrology, the Rahu Dasa

(planetary period) is 18 years as well. The

Nodes always move retrograde through

the zodiac. The Mean Nodes always move

in a retrograde fashion, whereas the True

Nodes station and go direct for short

periods of time as well. For this reason the

Mean and True Nodes can at times be

almost a degree apart.

Effects of an EclipseThe period of time in between two or three

eclipses (also called eclipse season) is

often a time when a series of intense

events occur, oftentimes more than would

normally occur within a short period of

time. Sometimes very catastrophic events

occur, like earthquakes and other natural

disasters, plane and train crashes,

revolutions, and other events that are

noteworthy and that affect masses of

people.

The Nodes are called “Chaya Grahas,”

(Sanskrit for “Shadow Bodies”) since they

are always lurking in the background, and

when you have an eclipse suddenly

things that were lurking in the back-

ground, or kept under wraps come out in

the open. Things come out of the wood-

work, and you have to deal with them,

transform, or be destroyed, that is, literally

sink or swim. I have always said that

eclipses reveal secrets or bring things out

in the open that may have been kept

under wraps for some time. In other

words, expect scandals around the time of

eclipses. If the eclipse point transits a

personal planet or angle in your chart, then

secrets may be revealed in your own life.

Eclipses create energy and intensity esp-

ecially when they are within days of

retrograde or direct stations of malefic

planets, sometimes resulting in natural

disasters. Two examples are as follows.

• The 2005 Kashmir earthquake oc-

curred in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan on

October 8, 2005 with a magnitude of 7.6.

Mars stationed retrograde on October 2,

2005, the solar eclipse occurred on

October 3, 2005, and the lunar eclipse

occurred on October 15, 2005. Not that far

away were Hurricane Katrina, which made

landfall in New Orleans on August 29,

2005, and Hurricane Wilma, which made

landfall in Florida on October 24.

• The Haiti earthquake occurred on

January 12, 2010 with a magnitude of 7.0.

Mars stationed retrograde on December

21, 2009 and Saturn stationed retrograde

on January 14, 2010. The lunar eclipse

occurred on December 31, 2009 and the

Solar Eclipse occurred on January 15,

2010, the day after the Saturn station.

If an eclipse that occurs near a retrograde

occurs on a personal planet or angle in

your chart, the effects would be even

more intense than if you only had contact

with an eclipse that did not occur near a

planetary station.

The span of an eclipse can be said to take

place from the moment the North Node

(Rahu) or South Node (Ketu) hits the

eclipse point until the moment of the

eclipse. In reverse, the span may start with

the eclipse and end when the Nodes hit

the eclipse point. If the Node hits the

eclipse point prior to the eclipse, then the

Node will awaken what the eclipse will

finish. If the eclipse occurs before the

Node hits the eclipse point, then the Node

will activate what the eclipse has started

to awaken.

It does not mean, however, that the effects

of that particular eclipse will necessarily

disappear when the span is over. The

eclipse degree also gets activated when

another planet, especially a malefic one,

hits the eclipse point, thereby creating a

noteworthy, intense, or dramatic event. If

that degree coincides with a personal

planet or angle in your chart, then you will

be sensitized and challenged each time the

eclipse, the node, and then a planet

passes through a particular planet or

angle in your chart. This process can be

likened to a retrograde planet which will

transit a point three times when it is direct,

retrograde, and then direct again.

Eclipse degrees just like the degrees of

planetary stations are powerful positions,

and can remain “hot” for at least six months,

ECLIPSES cont’d from p. 16

page 18

later, the degree was still

activated by this conjunction

(see right.)

Another violent

event occurred a few

days later, according

to Wikipedia, “on

April 17, 2013, an

ammonium nitrate

explosion

occurred at the

West Fertilizer

Company storage

and distribution

facility in West, Texas...

At least 15 people

were killed, more than

160 were injured and

more than 150

buildings were

damaged or destroyed.”

On the day of the first

eclipse itself, on April 24, 2013 in

Bangladesh, one of the worst garment

factory tragedies occurred when a

building collapsed killing at least 1129

people and injuring around 2500 people

(according to Wikipedia). In viewing the

eclipse chart, we can see that by this date,

Mars and Saturn were opposing each

other, and were straddling the lunar

eclipse, giving that eclipse the nature of

Mars and Saturn.

The following lists the span of the

eclipses in 2013 followed by the charts of

the eclipses. When the Node conjoins the

eclipse point prior to the eclipse, I have

listed it first. When the Node hits the

eclipse degree after the eclipse, it is listed

afterwards. I have listed the degree of the

eclipse according to both tropical and real

(Krishnamurti ayanamsa) zodiacs, and

have listed the nakshatra in which it

appears.

• Lunar Partial Eclipse. April 25, 2013.

4:07 PM EDT. Tropical. 05° Scorpio 51’.

Sidereal. 11° Libra 48’. Svati Nakshatra.

North Node. December 30, 2013.

• South Node. February 26, 2013.

Solar Annular Eclipse. May 9, 2013.

8:24 PM EDT. Tropical. 19° Taurus 31'.

Sidereal. 25°Ar ies 34'. Bharani Nakshatra.

ECLIPSES cont’d from p. 17

sometimes even a year or two, depending on

the length of the particular eclipse. Since

that degree is an actively volatile point

during the year, the dates of all planetary

contact with that degree is important for

world events as well as a personal chart.

This is especially true when one or even

two malefic planets hits a total eclipse

point. On that day, it is almost guaranteed

that something will happen that gets the

world’s notice. Malefic planets include

Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto,

Nodes, and a Morning Star Venus. Events

that occurred during the above circum-

stance include the attacks of September

11, 2001, the Indonesian Tsunami, and the

Virginia Tech murders.

A series of dramatic events and secrets

getting revealed around an eclipse

occurred this past spring, around the time

of the three eclipses, which occurred on

April 25, May 9, and May 25, 2013. (April

25th is the date of the eclipse in the

Eastern time zone. In other parts of the

world it took place on April 24.)

In terms of secrets getting revealed,

perhaps the most literal event was Edward

Snowden’s leaking of government,

confidential documents, which became

major news around May 20, 2013, when

Snowden left the United States for Hong

Kong. This situation is still ongoing, and

as we go to press, Snowden was finally

admitted into Russia after camping out at

the Moscow airport for the last month.

Another case in point was the Boston

Marathon bombing, which occurred on

April 15, 2013, a week prior to the first

eclipse. The Nodes were situated at 16°

Taurus-Scorpio 56’ (South in Scorpio,

North in Taurus), on the same degree as

they would be on April 25, the date of the

first eclipse. In fact, because it was so close

to an eclipse the Nodes were moving very

slowly, which meant that the Nodes were

within a one degree orb of that degree for

April, May, and June. (See p. 19 for the

charts of the five 2013 eclipses.)

What really set off the violence of the day,

however, was the fact that the Sun and

Mars conjunction (already a violent

signature) conjoined the eclipse point of

Education News. Why Fly? We could

quite easily stay on the ground. Why

certify? We could continue going to astro-

logy conferences, taking classes, reading

books, surfing the Internet, chatting with

friends about astrology. Certifying

through NCGR-PAA is much like getting

pilot’s wings. The process of certifying

gives us perspective on the field of astro-

logy—we’ll see what we know and what

we don’t yet know. We gain confidence to

handle the material we’ll see on the test

and use with clients. We get a measure of

respect—the certification levels give the

measure and our progress brings the

respect. We find community, especially

with colleagues who are going through

the certification process with us. And we

have the sense of accomplishment that

goes with hard-won achievement. please turn to p. 21

Annapolis Chapter. The Greatest Ast-

rological Picnic in the Known

Universe. On Sunday, August 4, at 1:55

PM, the Annapolis NCGR will host an

annual picnic in downtown Silver Spring,

Maryland. The date and time are always

selected astrologically. In over 30 years of

hosting these picnics, it has never been

canceled due to the weather. In August

2012, there were clouds over the entire

eastern seaboard (Rose, our Celtic

Weather Wizard, warned that this was

hurricane season). There was no hope for

some patch of blue sky. Regardless of the

posted time for the picnic, people started

arriving around 12 pm to sign up for read-

ings. Yes, there were two short periods of

drizzle but attendees simply pulled out

umbrellas from under their chairs and

continued with their conversations. No

one left because of the weather and the

last of the attendees left around 9pm.

The next day the rain poured! In the past,

astrologers and friends have come from

many States along the east coast, even

from Vienna, Austria. This picnic is known

for its excellent readers who come from

Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania,

southern Maryland—and one year

Priscilla Costello came from Canada. In

2012, astrologers from the Ukraine visited

and brought me a bottle of “Stalin’s

favorite wine” from the Republic of

Georgia. Yes, he may have been a brut

and a tyrant but he had good taste in

wine! My father and international film star

(www.cornerplotmovie.com) of a

documentary based upon his gardening

skills and our urban farm is available in the

afternoon to answer any gardening

questions. Many people buy produce

straight from the garden.

Book Reviews by Donna Van Toen

please turn to p. 24

Using Astrology to Create a Vocational

Profile: Finding the Right Career Direc-

tion, by Faye Cossar, Flare Publications,

www.flareuk.com, 2012. Paper. 257 pp.

$24.99 US. £14.99 Br.

People often consult astrologers when

they hit a career crisis or a career

crossroads. And astrology can definitely

offer them insight into their vocational

potentials and prospects. However, the

literature on vocational astrology is scant

at best, and additionally some of it is

pretty dated. So a book offering fresh

insights is definitely welcome, especially

when the insights are practical and based

on 25 years of experience.

The book is divided into several main

sections, starting with the introduction

and moving on to sections entitled Who

Am I? What Can I Do? What Do I Want?

and Now What? Each section covers

important chart factors, including Chiron

and Ceres. The author takes a whole-chart

approach to vocational astrology, so

don’t look for a lot of emphasis on houses

two, six, and ten; in fact the 6th house is

scarcely mentioned.

And don’t look for a cookbook approach

either, because while there is some

cookbook material, mostly this is a how-to

manual of another stripe.

And be forewarned, this is one of those

books where you need to read the

introduction. Cossar uses a biography to

begin her vocational profile, and you will

see how she does this in the introduction.

In the Who Am I? section, she discusses

how to find vocation and motivation

using the Sun, the role of the Sun, Asc.,

and MC, in expressing an authentic image,

and how to recognize style and drive

using Mars and the elements. I was

frankly more than a little skeptical of

putting emphasis on the Sun in vocational

astrology, because in the first place,

studies correlating vocation with

Traditional Medical Astrology, by J. Lee

Lehman, Ph.D., Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.,

[email protected], 2011. Paper. 332

pp. $34.99.

Medical astrology, in my opinion, is a

specialty and as is the case with

other specialties like financial astrology, it

is probably best practiced by those with

an appropriate academic background and

training.

That said, there are times when knowledge

of medical astrology certainly doesn’t

hurt. Clients often ask for dates to start

diets, stop drinking, or have cosmetic

surgery. Sometimes they will ask for dates

for necessary corrective surgery.

Occasionally they will ask you to

comment on the prognosis of a disease.

And once in a while there are questions

about getting the dog neutered or similar

things.

Mostly, you don’t need a medical degree

to deal with these questions, but you are

certainly going to need information you

probably won’t find in your garden-

variety class or textbook. That’s where

this book comes in. You will find natal,

horary, and electional techniques here, all

geared to medical considerations and all

based on traditional astrology.

One thing I like about Lee Lehman’s

books is the fact that she usually starts

out with an overview that puts things in a

clear perspective. This book is no

exception. It begins with a history of both

medicine and astro-medicine from pre-

history to modern times, in Egypt, Greece,

Rome, China, and Europe. There is an

excellent survey of relevant literature here.

There are also extensive endnotes.

Subsequent chapters cover Hippocratic-

Galenic medicine, the humors, the

temperament, and several different ways

to calculate it, and the system of virtue, as

Sun sign have not come up with much

validation, and secondly because I see the

Sun as what you are in the process of

becoming rather than what you are.

Cossar’s approach, while covering the

usual positive and negative Sun sign

traits, also focuses on questions you

might ask the client in relation to the Sun

sign. She also has a thorough section on

the Sun through the houses, giving brief

vocationally-based interpretations as well

as examples—not only of famous people

but of clients and other people that she

knows. This information, once I played

with it, was an eye-opener and I will

definitely refer to it in future.

The chapter on style and drive has some

good information about Mars aspects as

well as a bit of information on synthesis.

The elements are mentioned more briefly

and in relation to Myers-Briggs, among

other things. There are also some exercises

you can do with your clients. In fact, most

chapters offer exercises, as well as books

should you want further information. Other

chapters cover aspects to the MC, the

generational planets, the Huber Age Point,

and more.

The book has no index. I would have liked

one. There is a good bibliography and an

extensive data listing. One case study—a

client called Jackie—is used throughout

the book to tie the material together. The

author uses tropical Koch.

Because the author uses a multi-session

approach in her vocational work, this

system may not be a good fit for you. And

if you want to know what vocations are

“good” for Moon square Pluto or what-

ever, you won’t find your answer here.

Nevertheless, for experienced vocational

astrologers, there’s some good information

to be had in this book.

page 24

BOOK REVIEWS cont’d from p. 23

well as traditional disease markers in the

natal chart and more.

There is a very interesting chapter on

determining longevity, showing the

numerous variations in calculating it as

well as the variations on determining the

Hyleg, which to me at least left me feeling

that determining longevity was at best a

hit-and-miss affair that I would prefer to

leave alone. There are good chapters on

medical horaries and electional astrology

for surgeries and the like as well.

And last but not least there are lots and

lots of charts—both case studies from

private files, and case studies of public

figures like Hank Williams, Sr., Scott

Hamilton, Mary Martin, and more. All

charts are Tropical Regiomontanus and

Rodden-rated.

The book winds up with some thoughts

on how modern medicine might change,

how astrology could be correlated to and

used with various systems of

complementary medicine, and how future

research could improve and enhance

medical astrology.

An excellent glossary, several appendices,

and a thorough index rounds out the

book.

This is not a cookbook and definitely not

a beginners’ book. It is clear and readable

but best-suited to intermediate or ad-

vanced astrologers with a bit of basic

knowledge of traditional astrology.

Knowledge of horary wouldn’t hurt either.

If this sounds like you, and you have an

interest in medical astrology, this is

definitely a book to consider adding to

your library.systems of complementary

medicine, and have time. Maybe you will.

When Worlds Collide, by Kathy Allan, Pol-

lux Press, Fort Pierce, Florida 34981,

2012. Paper. 369 pp. Price not marked.

The premise of this intriguing book is

that when it scomes to the Moon’s

Nodes, we’ve got it wrong and it’s Dane

Rudhyar’s fault. Why? Because in The

Astrology of Personality he reversed the

meanings of the North and South Nodes,

saying that the North Node was destiny at

work and the South Node human will. He

later corrected himself in Person Centered

Astrology saying that the North Node

refers to whatever builds the personality

and the South Node is Destiny. And she

feels the original and inaccurate interpreta-

tion is the prevalent one in existing

literature.

Allan therefore begins this work with a

somewhat hit-and-miss study of existing

literature. While she quotes Judith Hill,

Celeste Teal, Martin Schulman, Zipporah

Dobyns, and others, off the top of my

head I can think of at least eight books not

mentioned in her survey, notes, and

references—there is no bibliography—

including those authored by Jan Spiller,

Agneta Borstein, Bernice Grebner,

Elizabeth Spring, and my own book, plus

several more that offer cookbook delinea-

tions of the Nodes while not focusing on

them exclusively.

Since Allan doesn’t agree that the Nodes

give information about reincarnation (she

believes the whole chart is fated), there is

no mention of evolutionary astrology, but

given this statement, it is odd that she

would include Schulman in her survey. It’s

also somewhat odd that she opens with a

quote from Dane Rudhyar. If you’re

puzzled already, well so was I. Never mind;

let’s move on.

Chapter Two presents a very thorough

look at the astronomy of the Nodes. She

very rightly says that an angle has no

inherent ability to act. Rather, she sug-

gests that the rulers of the Nodes channel

the energy of the Nodes. Additionally, a

planet conjunct either Node will be

energized by that Node, which in turn

impacts the house where the Node is

posited.

As for signs, she pays little or no atten-

tion to them, claiming that the North Node

relates to Aries and the South Node

relates to Libra. The North Node is related

to the ego (in the non-judgmental sense of

the term) and is helpful in the outer world.

The South Node is related to the

otherworld or spiritual realm and is an

intuitive sort of energy, whereas the North

Node might be considered more the realm

of concrete experiential knowledge.

The ruler of the North Node, according to

her is often emphasized or “strong” in the

chart. Meanwhile, there is “always” some

weakness or loss connected with the

South Node ruler and planets aspecting

the South Node ruler are negatively

affected by its energy at least in terms of

material world expression. She goes on to

look at planets at the bendings, other

aspects to the nodes, and aspects by

declination.

Conclusion? Her keywords for the Nodes

are not terribly different than any found in

most other books. However, the way she

works with the Nodes is distinctly

different.

The remainder of the book consists of

extremely well-done, well-documented

case studies of both people and events.

Charts are all tropical Placidus; data is all

good. And her forecasting system works

extremely well. Will it work as well for

you? The jury’s out on that one. I would

have liked to play with her system using a

large number of charts from my own files. I

simply didn’t have time. Maybe you will.

geocosmic nature and to pursue educational pro-

grams in various interdisciplinary fields related

to geocosmic studies with a view to granting

certification recognizing individual achievement

in such fields. The term "geocosmic" is defined

dences and cycles involving earthly phenomena

and cosmic (celestial) events." This purpose is

implemented by

of a course of study leading to competency in

geocosmic studies, sponsoring appropriate

educational programs;

ous levels of competency, chartering regional,

semi-autonomous chapters of NCGR having

the same goals and purposes;

fessional standard and ethical behavior among
