SPANSPANWe have come to the end of our Interchurch Alpha course which was run by ateam from Carrigrohane together with ateam from Ballincollig Catholic Parish inthe Westgate Foundation Building. Wehad a small group of participants whichmeant everybody got to know eachother very quickly. Alpha provides awonderful environment for people tospeak their mind and ask questions. We don.t claim to have all the answers but it's a greatforum for discussion and we all learn from each other.Once again we saw the Lord move in people's lives,

meeting them at their point of need. The word"transformed" came up a lot because it accurately de-scribed what the most of the participants felt was actu-ally happening to them. That's the beauty of Alpha,People do the course expecting to learn more about

Christianity and they don't usually expect to meet theChrist at the centre of it. Many participants grow inknowledge and understanding week by week. Theyhunt out the old Bible at home and start reading andthen very often replace it with a more up-to-date trans-lation. Prayer becomes more personal and more real. After the talk on healing, we had a time of prayer min-istry and the following week, some of the participantscouldn't wait to tell us how they had seen God answerprayer not only in their own lives but also in the livesof family and friends. We also discussed subjectssuch as guidance and the Holy Spirit. If you feel yourwalk with God could use a refresher, come along tothe next Alpha and enjoy an adventure!

SPANSPANVISIONVISIONVISION ––– THE VAST ANDTHE VAST ANDTHE VAST ANDENDLESS SEAENDLESS SEAENDLESS SEA

Vision is a word that is banded around so much that itruns the danger of losing its impetus. So I keep comingback to the following picture which keeps vision freshand vital: If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up themen to gather wood, divide the work and give orders.Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endlesssea. (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry French writer and aviator).

So often ministry and mission is seen as drummingup support, conscripting individuals to be involved, especially when things are desperate. But when thereis vision, ministry and mission follow naturally. A visionfor the “vast and endless sea” that is God, sovereignand majestic whose glory is above the heavens. Yetwho gives humankind a unique place not to be gods(an age old illusion) but people crowned with glory andhonour to exercise the care of creation. (Psalm 8).And if this vision of the “sea” is too vast to inspire usand we need a face, then the incomparable Jesus ofNazareth, Son of Man and Son of God should inflameour passion.

Of course for mission and ministry to flow naturallythere is much graft – “the ship” needs to be built. But itis the common purpose from the vision that makes thework worthwhile and full of significance.

A Vision/Development Group? That is why the Select Vestry is exploring how we canform a group to consider the vision of CarrigrohaneUnion for 2012 onwards. It is humbling to see so manywith vision that has inspired many ministries; e.g.; themarriage course (the latest one has just concluded tomuch acclaim andwith a suggestionthat this should bemade available in thediocese); the Toddlergroups were borne ofVision, and so on. Buthow do we respond towhat God is doing to-day and the impetus ofnew ministries which have been ignited by the vision ofindividuals? For example, when some of our membersout of Christian compassion respond to the immediateneeds of their community by organising a youth cluband hosting an evening heightening the issues in andaround suicide, has our vision, been big enough toprovide support? These and related issues prompt theneed for a Vision group to reflect and guide the SelectVestry . A vision/development group is not to createmore work but be a vehicle to listen to God and oneanother to give a clearer purpose to what we do inBlarney, Carrigrohane and Inniscarra – ie; three par-ishes One Church.

Vision Realised- almost!Vision can of course take a long time to be realised.Over 10 years ago it was suggested building an exten-sion to Inniscarra church. At the end of May a hugestep was made in seeing the vision beginning to be areality, with the Gift Day raising €29,338 towards theproject. (Thanks to everyone who had the vision togive). With the money already set aside, we will haveenough to proceed once the planning process iscompleted.

A Month of Feasting, Fun and FaithThis last month has been very full, so thanks go to somany for all the feasting, fun and faith shared:• The Backhouses for their generous hospitality incelebration of baby Sean.• the Inniscarra church community for treating us soroyally, capturing the truth of Psalm 8 and the people ofGod as a royal people, with their efforts to welcome us

for the picnic.• Ivan McMahonand the Youth teamfor the celebrationof the GrowingLeaders course andstirring us withquestions aboutwhat it means to bean IntergenerationalChurch.

• Marg Everettfor preparing theyouth band liftingus in worship atthe United Cele-bration.• Patsy andRobert and Billand Janet forh o s t i n g t h eMarriage Course.• T h e l a t e s tAlpha team forgiving up so muchtime to run the recent course.• Lucia O’Donovan and the Toddler teams for organis-ing and running the Big Toddle in aid of Barnardos.• The Rea family—for a lovely June Seniors’ Lunch!

With this being the last edition of Span for the summer, Ihope most of us can enjoy a different pace and bethoroughly refreshed.

Every prayer and blessing,

Ian

PS- A WhisperThe recent Diocesan Synod raised the issue of civil part-nerships for gay couples and the dilemma of clergy beingasked to bless these relationships. I am always reluctantto speak on this subject and especially on the scale of aDiocesan Synod. But to provide a balance I felt compelledto put another view along with others, including our ownDoug Venn, that I personally would feel that dilemmaacutely. The issue is not easily discussed in large arenasbut to be silent seems simply to acquiesce, even if tospeak only seems like a whisper. I suspect like many I amnot drawn to either end of the argument, but am split be-tween principle and personal knowledge of individuals Iknow who are gay and my desire not to judge. Ultimately,we need as in Psalm 8, to accept God’s sovereignty, andfrom that flows the acceptance that no one has a monop-oly of love, and respects freedom of conscience and freespeech.

Carrigrohane Youth WorkCarrigrohane Youth WorkCarrigrohane Youth Work

We are now firmly in the summer mode with the Youth Cafe running through the summer (Tue and Fri 2-4 pm, foreveryone in secondary school, including those just about to go into secondary). There are also a few young peopleand Matthew W, Heather and Matt joining the diocesan group heading up to Summer Madness (Christian festival inBelfast) in the first week of July, always a good time.

It has been an amazing time in the youth work this last term, the Easter trip was a highlight as always, as well as theGrowing Leaders graduation and the usual program highs. This term we also experimented with ‘Experimental’ (anevening service for young people and the not-so-young people). This service is embryonic, but was a blending of‘Sunday PM’ and ‘Open to God’ and was an encouraging time of worship, discussion, prayer and food. We plan torun another ‘Experimental’ on 31st July -Sunday after the Holiday club - all welcome.

On the back of the United Celebration where we were thinking about ‘intergenerational church’ it might be useful tohave a reminder of some of the language we are using to describe what this might look like;

‘Lifelong Discipleship’: a commitment to follow Jesus that doesn’t end at any particular life stage, but runs throughthem all.

‘A sense of belonging’: Feeling we are valued by the wider community to which we belong, in this case the churchcommunity.

‘Intergenerational church’: A church community that nurtures lifelong discipleship and a sense of belonging in allits members, irrespective of age.

‘Mixed Economy church’: To help intergenerational church become a reality, we need to respect diversity and therich variation amongst the church community. No ‘one’ service will help everyone, but you need a range ofstyles/approaches to help people from a variety of ages, backgrounds, temperaments etc
