Although memory problems can be due to illness, dehydration, poor diet, lack of sleep, medications, depression and many other causes, not remembering may simply be due to: Not paying attention. TIP: Focus on what you want to remember. Use as many of your senses as possible to help you remember. Trying to rush yourself. TIP: Allow yourself time. Older people definitely do take longer to remember or to learn new information. Being disorganized. TIP: Take time to get and stay organized. Being anxious (especially about the fact that you can’t remember. TIP: Be positive and tell yourself that you will be able to remember the fact that you are trying to remember. Relax, go for a walk, laugh and be proud of what you do remember and it is likely that the thought that you were afraid that you could not remember will pop into your head. Steps you can take to Help you Remember Things If you don’t remember what was said, don’t be afraid to ask the person who said it to repeat it. Repeat information that you want to remember out loud. By hearing yourself say something out loud you have a better chance of remembering it. Write down information you want to remember. Keep a notepad in your pocket or purse, or keep track on your phone. Use a calendar to keep track of important dates and appointments. Create a routine if the task is something that you need to remember on a continual basis. Create a schedule and do the task at the exact same time in the exact same way every time you need to do it. Place post-it-notes in visible places as reminders. Place items by the door or with your keys to help you remember to take them with you. Use a watch with an alarm, or your phone’s clock which will have an alarm, or your oven timer to remind you when the time is up for something that you want to remember to do. Use a daily pill box to keep track of medication and keep it on the table where it is visible. Use word associations to help remember facts. For example: ‘My sister lives on Spruce Avenue because she has a big spruce tree in her yard.’ Write down clues to help you remember people’s names. If you're worried about memory loss — especially if memory loss affects your ability to complete your usual daily activities — consult your doctor. He or she will likely do a physical exam, as well as check your memory and problem-solving skills. In addition, review your medications with your doctor regularly. Various medications can impact memory. Manage your chronic conditions by following your doctor’s orders. The better you take care of yourself, the better your memory is likely to be. Does that really work?” I replied. “Oh yes,” he said proudly. “66 years and so far, I have not had to make one big decision. A BIG THANKS to the staff of Planeview Place in Leduc , for preparing those delicious breakfast sausages that were cooked to perfecon. A BIG THANKS to the Leduc Lions Club for their contribuon of their me, their experse and their griddle to make those delicious, fluffy pancakes that had everyone asking for more. A BIG THANKS to Diane Sims and the LDSC Board of Directors for providing both the venue for the Event and all their assistance. Last, but definitely not least, A BIG THANK YOU to all the Seniors who came out to the event. Without you there would be no reason for the Pancake Breakfast. Your parcipaon and input are greatly valued. It is not happy people who are thankful, it is Thankful people who are happy.
