From the Principal’s Desk I can’t believe we are already in week 8 of term 2. This year is going by very quickly and it’s wonderful to see students all settled back into school routines and learning. We understand during Winter children can be more prone to sickness and when they are sick, they should remain at home. However, when children are healthy the school really is the best place for them. Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to achieve their potential. Schools, in partnerships with parents, are responsible for promoting regular attendance of students. Please remember that parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence. If the school can support you in any way to ensure students get to school daily, please contact us. We are a partnership and are here to help and support our families. I hope you all enjoy your weekend. Take care Mrs Kristy Haggett Principal Meet the Teacher.. Hello everyone. My name is Helena Suess. I am the Learning and Support teacher at Toongabbie East two days per week. I have been at Toongabbie East since last year and I really like working here as the staff and the students are great to work with. I help the children with their learning and I have been very happy with their progress over the years. My interests are swimming, bush walking and yoga. My best time of the day is when I'm on playground duty and watching the students play together. The school has such a lot of land to spread out on and soccer is popular. My last school didn't have a blade of grass so we are very lucky here. I love to travel and I go over to Greece once a year to visit family and I live in a little house on a Greek island. I do this in Winter as it is Summer over there then. I couldn't go this year because of Covid 19 so I'm looking forward to my trip next year. Meet the Teacher.. Hi Toongabbie East Public School Community! If I haven’t had the opportunity to meet you in person and introduce myself I apologise – we have experienced a very interrupted and unusual year. My name is Mrs Nerida Duncum and I am new to Toongabbie East PS this year. I am the Assistant Principal for the Support Unit and am thoroughly enjoying working with the wonderful staff and children at TEPS. So, a bit about myself, well if I’m not at school I’m usually found on the sidelines of a sporting field. With three high school aged, sport loving boys, my time is dominated by sport (and washing!). Their activities include cricket, athletics – particularly the throws (discus and javelin), basketball, soccer, rugby league, touch footy and oz tag. You can imagine over the last couple of months, while sporting activities have been on hold, how much excess energy my boys have had. I enjoy supporting them as they develop their skills and resilience through sport, and often find myself fulfilling manager or coaching roles for their teams or sports. When sport doesn’t dominate our weekends and school holidays, we like

to get away. As a family we have travelled around Australia, camping in many remote locations whilst enjoying the varied and beautiful landscapes our country has to offer. After nearly three decades of supporting people with a disability and working in a variety of education settings and roles I feel I have found a home at TEPS. My work history includes teaching in a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley WA, educating adults at TAFE and developing training packages. As an educator I am particularly interested in supporting student wellbeing. If I find time for myself I like to flick through design and decorator magazines, draw and read. To cover my favourites: food – chocolate and Thai; colour – (well depends on purpose) to wear – black (it’s very practical!), to look at – burgundy & blue, to decorate – grey; music – any (depends on my mood); books – autobiographies and sci fi-fantasy; favourite NRL team – Tigers; favourite BBL/WBBL team – Thunder. Please say hi and introduce yourself if you see me in the playground!

News from Support Unit News from the Support Unit..!

This term in the Support Unit we have been learning about the weather! We recently learnt about what makes the wind, we made our own Wind Socks to measure how much wind there was! It was really fun! 😊😊

News from 5-6 R

"This term, 5/6R have been focussing on persuasive writing. We have been using persuasive language devices such as rhetorical questions, repetition, emotive language and high modality words to help convince our readers. In class last week we researched meditation and wrote persuasive arguments for why meditation should be used with all school aged children. We looked at the benefits of being mindful and studies which complimented our arguments. Here is Yar's persuasive text on meditation."

News from 1-2 F

This term 1/2F said farewell to our year 3 classmates who joined their new class, and said hello to each other as we started at school learning again. We have been exploring the school history and looking at what has changed in the last 40 years - including what the library was like before there was a netball court and tree in front of it! This week we say farewell to our student teacher Mrs McCann and wish her well in her teaching career. She has become a valuable member of the class. Special mention must go to Jemima and Nathaniel for extra effort in their reading over the last few weeks. Special mention also goes to Clarke and Joseph, who have been putting a lot of effort into their writing.

Well done! Cameron Fisher School Security

Unfortunately, the school had some damage done last weekend. Toongabbie East PS is a wonderful school and we want to ensure that it looks the part and students feel proud of their surroundings at school. If you see any unlawful acts on the school premises, we ask that you contact the police or school security. School Security : 1300 88 00 21 Toongabbie East Behaviour Code for Students:

Meditation has been around for a long time, since mankind began. It's very popular nowadays to help reduce stress and worry. Meditation is very helpful and has great benefits so it should be taught in schools and here are some reasons why. Firstly, meditation helps improve students intelligence, their mental wellbeing and academic skills. Meditation helps students concentrate and shows more of their social skills. Studies have shown that Meditation helps relieve their mind calming it and also their mental function with that they have a better chance of doing more work and their grades will be higher. To continue, it's important that kids are focused to do well in all subjects and just work in general. Kids (that are students) are always wandering around and very fidgety looking for something to play with. Meditation allows students to calm down and helps their mental function have more control of themselves. This means the students sustain their attention while doing their learning and they do it better for a long period of time. Think about why some kids in your class are always so sad or gloomy! Well they're probably dealing with personal stuff in their life. That gives them a stressful mind because theyre always thinking about what they're dealing with. Meditating allows them to concentrate and relieve tensions mind and body. Meditation is also for all ages and does the same health effects when you do it! Students sometimes feel down and have a bad outlook on themselves but with meditation they feel better, have more self confidence and have a good outlook on life. They have so much self confidence that they've never felt before!
