HomeschoolCurrently offered in DSUSD under the Horizon School. Independent study is an alternative to classroom instruction consistent with a school district’s course of study and is not an alternative curriculum. Independent study programs are voluntary and use alternative instructional strategies that respond to individual student needs and learning styles. The flexibility of independent study programs makes it possible to serve a wide variety of students, enabling some students who otherwise might not graduate to stay in school. Students who enroll in independent study include students who have health problems, are parents, need to work, and are child actors or aspiring Olympic athletes. Independent studies programs are required to follow the district-adopted curriculum, and work is governed by a written agreement signed by the student, teacher, parent, and other relevant adults. This program is A-G Compliant and allows students to go from Horizon to a four year university upon graduation.
Horizon (K-8) Home School is a fully accredited K-8 Alternative Education Program. Horizon K-8 students are taught at home by the parent/guardian using detailed, California Common Core State Standards-based lesson plans. The Home School Academic Program is rigorous and not designed for “catching-up” on a student’s studies. Unlike traditional educational programs, students and parents have flexibility. Without adhering to a time clock, parents/guardians are expected to work at least 5 hours each day with their students. Each parent/guardian will have continuous support. An experienced, fully credentialed supervising teacher will assure accountability with all state and district requirements during weekly meetings. The supervising teachers will also provide one-on-one support for the student and parent/guardian during the weekly meetings.
